The Official Fallout 3 thread of post-apocalyptic proportions!

Good lord I think I've totally chumpetized my playthrough by going somewhere I wasn't supposed to. I decided to do some random exploring in the southwestern area of the map for kicks and sidequests when I...

MAJOR MASSIVE SPOILER

Stumbled across my dad. Then he leads me to the Jefferson Memorial and we're fighting super mutants together. I just wanted to leisurely explore around and take the game really slow and now I feel like I've been thrust into the freaking end game already. I only just met Three Dog! I could reload my save and avoid finding him, but I can't play the game pretending I don't already know where he is. :\

Curse you, non-linearity!!

Wait I thought the only way would be for you to find
Vault 112
unless you went thru all that trouble and went into the place and go through that simulation too

Just got my rail gun. Holy shit this thing is awesome, best gun by far so far.
Took me awhile to find a pressure cooker, but there's one in the super duper mart and 2 in the tunnels where you find find roy the ghoul, can't remember his last name. Only place I've seen a crutch is at pinkertons workstation in the broken bow section of rivet city.

Also got the wired reflexes perk by
turning in the replicated man to zimmer..lol.. much better than the reward for being good and warning him on that quest.

It looks like all of gaf escaped the bug after leaving Rivet City that freezes the game.

Looks like a lot of people have the same problem on Bethesda forums though so i'm hoping they patch it soon so I can continue with the story.

What bug is that?

I assume that's what he did since it's in the area he vaguely indicated. Same thing happened to me.:lol

Speaking of radroaches, those damn thing freak the fuck out because I'm deathly afraid of roaches in real life and they LOOK so god damned the same as real roaches. Man, this post is even making my skin crawl.

After seeing pages and pages of complaining about the sidequest THOSE! I was fearing the worst, but I made it through pretty much no problem. Maybe because I did things a little out of order, so I had some pretty badass equipment when I finally got around to it. With the chienese assault rifle, VATS head-head-head killed or almost killed all the ants until the final
queen room.
In the final room, I just frenzied one, and then the ~3 guardians that were in there all fucked each other up.

where is the ant lair? I walked all around grayditch and couldn't find it.

I don't remember specifically.

I don't know what's up with so many people not being able to find things, though o.0 With the exception of Blood Ties, if you just follow the quest as designed, the game holds your hand and always gives you compass markers telling you exactly where to go. And in Blood Ties' case, the vague directions were intentional.

- Couple people couldn't find the building for the
declaration of independence
quest, but if you speak to the quest-giver, he marks it on your map.

- LOTS of people can't figure out how to get to the GNR building. But if you follow the compass, you see that it leads you into the subway. And in the subway, you can bring up the map and see where the exit is.

- You're not the first person to get confused/lost on this stage of the ant quest.

I think a lot of people are just rushing through the game, whereas I'm taking my sweet time. This would also explain why many people have complained about having low ammo & no stimpaks. When they rush, they miss/don't notice things that would update their compass, and miss lots of ammo and health that could be scavanged.

Anyway Brash, I think you need to enter the kid's house, where you'll find his dead dad. On the body will be a key in the shack next door. If I remember right, exploring the shack should update you on where to go. I'm not accusing you of rushing or anything; it's just a general observation I've noticed after reading every page of this topic.

After making this diatribe I just KNOW I'm gonna get stuck soon and need directions to a quest location, and be forced to eat a bunch of crow :lol :lol

Just got the game today, got out of the vault and made it to the first town... I noticed that you could possibly unlock a hidden compartment behind the bible passage thing in your dad's office. The rating was just low enough to think that you could do it if you stacked the lockpicking skill from the beginning, I didn't. Am I missing out on something? Is it even possible to unlock from the start?

Ran into kind of a weird glitch tonight. When I asked the robot in your house in Megaton for a haircut my character's face flashed once and then disappeared. Couldn't see the different hairstyles or anything. strange.

I'm surprised about the people not being able to find things too. Usually it's marked clearly or you can deduce it from what has been said about the quest.
Also, speaking of the compass. I think it's much improved over Oblivion's. It is far easier to ignore as things aren't indicated as clearly and I feel it's smaller or at least its icons are and they don't show what they're pointing at.

I don't get a compass marker for the ant quest. it just tells me to eliminate the source. :(

I did the part with the kid's dad days ago. I'll go back and double-check to make sure I didn't miss anything.

I think my first character is close to being finished in the game. Paused the last part of the main quest to do some exploring and missions I might had missed(which was a lot) but now it feels like I've done the bulk of the game at least(could be loads of stuff left).

I'm not sure how different it would be in another play through. Most of the skills while not 100% necessary are too convenient to pass up. Same with perks. Something tells me that the ranged combat focus is the cookie cutter build in this game. No other builds really get as good or are just a chore to play.

Any thoughts?

Check the science terminal in the shack. Reading the entries there, and/or picking up an audio log should update you. You'll find out that a scientist was doing ant experiments that caused them to mutate, and it also tells you where. I think.

It's in the subway tunnels nearby.

Two questions:

Where can I find the schematic for the Railgun? I know there is a computer in Rivet City in one of the residents rooms that says he has an idea how to build it, but I didn't find a schematic there.

Does the Brotherhood of Steel have a base somewhere? If so, where is it? I've soon explored 3/4 of the map and still haven't found anything. :|

Brotherhood of Steel's base is the Citadel (Formerly known as the Pentagon)

It's in Virginia Southeast of Grayditch. Follow the river and you'll run right into it.

When I play Fallout 3, when I experience the world and feel they've managed to create with their trademark TES styled RPG, I can't help but find it a damn shame that Bethesda couldn't have their way with the Shadowrun IP.

I've been putting this quest off for ages, but how do I finish Blood Ties? There seems to be three separate spots that the person I'm looking for could be after dark, but not once have I run across them yet. One thing I did was go into the Hideout and killed all the raiders and scorpions that were in there. Any help?

Go to the station that should be marked NW of the Hamilton's HIdeout (where the raiders and scorpions were). Explore that area and you will find it (there's LOTS of traps on the path there--so you'll know your near when you start encountering traps-so be sure to watch your step)

thanks man.

On an unrelated note, when you think about it, you could almost write a short book based off your own unique adventures in this game. There are so many different ways to do things and explore that each story would be different.

I think I've played too much fallout, I'm looking around the shelves at work and thinking about how many caps the stuff is worth.

Also I'm pretty sure I just need a cherry bomb to build a bottlecap mine.

How are cigarettes so abundant in this post-apocalyptic world? Those shits woulda been all smoked up so fast.

there's tons of stuff that doesn't make sense if you really think about it. It's best to just turn your brain off and enjoy, or you'll drive yourself nuts.

(Would you even smoke 200-year-old cigarrettes?)

I wonder how fast radioactive tobacco facilitates the development of lung cancer?

Drastic decline in human population makes for a lot of unexplored areas and unsmoked ciggies. Oh and it seems that ghouls don't like to smoke or something.

I like this game better than Oblivion by far. Especially the V.A.T.S system.

Although the world and characters have even less personality... I get so bored. Like discussing with boring people in real life. ;(

I'm about 12 hours in now, rolling through super mutants, and I've gotta say that Bethesda has outdone themselves. The way everything comes together is amazing. I literally feel like I'm scavenging for supplies. I'm usually too poor to buy or repair anything, so I just use weapons until their condition degrades and then just discard them.

Basically, what I'm saying is that FO3's need for you to conserve ammo/supplies actually adds to the immersion.

I hope all of the insecure haters have eaten their share of crow, because FO3 is quickly becoming my favourite WRPG ever.

Exact same problem in my game; the dude just completely disappeared early on, he's absolutely nowhere to be found, and I have like 80 scrap metals :(

I think NPCs either disappear or die randomly by error though, my friend had the same problem and he found Walter dead in the radiation pool where the bomb was for absolutely no reason. To top that, my one friend, the very first time he goes into Megaton at the beginning of the game for the first time, Lucy West is just dead on the ground, so he never got that whole quest from her. He says that the Sheriff and Walter have also completely disappeared for him as well, and in other places he's found people randomly dead for no reason as well.

This is all on 360, but it's kinda annoying :/

Well, I've encountered NPC walking out of a door that I just lockpicked and it's not even his/her place. There are some weird glitches in Fallout 3.

I gotta say I hate the three voice-actors that keep getting recycled only cause they're so noticeable. Referring to the guy that sounds like Chef, movie voice-over guy and Colonel Sanders.

Blew up Megaton to shut Simms up every time I stepped into town then it turns out Gustavo stole his voice box.

Btw how do u get the quest to go back to 101? Completed the game never got it, or dogmeat for that matter.

I was in Megaton one time, I think before Vault 87 quest or around that time, and I got a message about an emergency radio signal.

Went to the pipboy listened to the broadcast and it was from vault 101.

Almost upp to 30 hours now and still love it but I have just gotten a bugged quest. :(

After saving red and other kid in Big town. They asked me to stay and help them against mutants. Picked a choice where I was supposed to fix some robots to fight for them. Only problem is that there are no robots in big town to fix! Everyone is just standing around and going "Aren't you going to show us how fix the robots?", "The robots are in the junkjard you know" and "are you going to show us or just standing around looking stupid?" . I am playing a good character but I am so tempted to just waste everyone in town! Little bastards.

I saw a robot in Big Town, he was beside a house near a fence. I could highlight but couldnt click on him, probably because I hadn't done the quest yet.

I only have one quest left and its the shitty "find 30 nuka cola quantum bottles" and i only have 10. Think this one may get the better of me.

Hmm, ok. I searched the whole town pretty good but I guess I will take another look just in case.

damn! I was short on money and sold 7 of them!

anyway, a true masterpiece, the customization of the main charachter is hugely deep, and the combat! some of the V.A.T.S. finishing moves just look and feel amazing, no less.

I need to do this because I keep getting disc errors but how are the loading times affected? Haven't seen any dvd vs hd comparisons for fallout yet.

My coworker just told me about an infinite EXP exploit in FO3. :P

Really easy to do too. I'm going to avoid it.
Well, there's been one in the previous Fallouts so it makes sense there's one in this one as well :lol

So you decided to take revenge?

Where the Hell do I find Ian West?

There's a metro station, just off the bridge and across the water from Arefu. The name escapes me but that's the start point.

Interesting sidequest btw.

I think they are near Red's House, on the other side (the one not facing the "town square"), near the fence.
