The Official Fallout 3 thread of post-apocalyptic proportions!

Quick question, couple of people said they messed up their main quest by entering some vaults too early, which ones should I avoid until they show up in the main quest?

This is the first time in 2 days I've been online. Fallout 3 is rocking my world. I take back what I said about the world feeling cluttered. It took a little while to get used to, but it's just great now. I've played for 40 hours in the last 4 days and I've just started doing the main quest.

I'm almost level 16 now and sometimes I just spend 15 minutes leveling up, trying to decide on which perk to get.

It's amazing how many times I plan to do a certain quest only to get sidetracked by another location for a few hours. Just fantastic and a huge improvement over Oblivion in a lot of ways. Still the game feels about 50% Fallout and 50% Oblivion, but I don't really see that as a downside, they just did their own thing with it and as long as the quality is as high as it is, I welcome change.

I went back to Megaton Ruins and she was in front of the place

All I saw was the robot partially buried under the earth, still speaking. That was a really nice touch.

I'll have to go back and look for the girl.

Did you see that robot? Perhaps where the girl is relative to it?

do you have an active quest for her? If so try doing it and after completing it the marker should be where she is since you have to go back to her. I went to the ruins right after I blew it up and after that she starting walking around the world. So she might still not be there for you

Thanks for the tips! I'm level 7 and I seem to be doing some things right. I must think about getting the Comprehension Perk though, I haven't found enough books for it to really seem useful to me, but I guess I just haven't been looking hard enough?

There are hundreds of books in the game, so you're probably not looking hard enough. I've gotten at least 30-40 so far, so disregarding the few that I accidentally read before I got the perk, that's an extra 30 skill points right there, better than any single skill point perk (the closest is big guns at +15 skill points).

However, if you're not the type of player to look on every shelf and every locker, then it might not be for you...

you can do the Moira's Wasteland Survival Guide even if you blow up Megaton

wat

I've been delaying blowing it up almost solely because I'm not quite done with Moira's book (on the last chapter of it).

Nah, I walked around town for a bit, decided that shithole needed to go, and went off to nuke the town. All I did was talk to the bartender once and murder and steal from the guy with the mentats.

Couldn't wait to set the nuke off at first, but as I have gotten to know the places and people I am starting to get attached, lol. Megaton has become my adopted home so to speak. Still I have a reputation as an asshole to uphold so as soon as that survival guide is done (2 chapters left) the place has got to go.:D

If someone says "in the main story when..." or "It ruined the whole story". Don't click it because it might spoil it. It's not like you HAVE to read it.

It isn't like they say "OMG I found this really amazing weapon in
LOLZ END GAME SPOILERZ HERE
."

Actually, that's exactly what happened with Hootie. He simply said "in the main quest mission" and the following post said something about cool armor, and that's why I highlighted it - so I could see what this armor was and if I was at a point where I can get it.

Considering Hootie's spoiler holds probably the single biggest spoiler in the game, I think he could have given more indication of that. I know it's my fault for highlighting it in the first place, but people not giving any context to their spoilers is also an issue in this thread. If you're trying to help someone or find out something cool, how are you supposed to know if the spoiler is something you've already experienced? It shouldn't require waiting until you've beaten the game.

i have that damn molerat repellent in my inventory and can't get rid of it. it has a weight of 3 and i cant take it out of my inventory or sell it or anything. after getting the molerat quest from moira i convinced her to stop writing her book. the dream crusher perk is awesome, but i want those 3 weight points back!

How good is the Deathclaw Gauntlet? I don't know if I should bother tracking down the parts.

Not that great, it does about 16 damage. It looks pretty cool, but it's not really worth it imo. Then again I never really bother with melee weapons.

I guess you tried to drop it (x on xbox) or to put it in a locker ?
What is that dream crusher perk you are talking about ?

Whats the Dream Crusher perk? I did the whole quest so I got the Survivalist perk.

Moira moves into Underworld. I found her wandering around the Megaton Ruins, but she was walking towards Rivet City, too. I imagine she just leaves eventually.

Is it confirmed that Moira hangs around the ruins after you blow up Megaton, or could that be a glitch?

She's turned into a ghoul, so that would be one hell of a glitch :lol :lol

I was thinking about changing it up for my second play through, but I have a concern about plasma weapons or laser (whichever they are). I haven't seen hardly any around. I've come across a couple, but if you didn't have small arms, would you be screwed? I'm still in my first play, but all I see almost anyone carry is small arms weapons. Does that change if you pick a different skill?

No, but you should be able to find more than enough laser and plasma ammo. I have more laser ammo than I could ever use.

I wouldn't worry too much about it anyway. Even with only 20 points in small guns they are still incredibly effective so you can fall back on them if you can't find ammo. I have my big guns and melee nearly maxed out on my second character and small guns are still more effective even without any extra points added.

I've see lots of Laser weapons (Pistols and Rifles), but have yet to come across a Plasma weapon. I figure they'll come later on in the game.

What is
Vault 106
supposed to do with anything, it's fucking freaky. How do I get out of here and what am I supposed to do? Did I fuck up main story by going here?

So where on the map can I find dogmeat?

I know he's in the scrapyard, but where is that?
I know I found him really early on in the game when I got back from
a chapter 1 Wasteland Survival Guide quest. The one where you have to disarm mines in a supposed ghosttown, but when you get there a sniper is shooting at you. On my way back I saw the Scrapyard and Dogmeat doing unspeakable things to some Raiders. Basically it's to the north of Megaton if I remember correctly

I didn't do that quest, but I'll check north of Megaton :) thx

I missed Dogmeat fighting the raiders entirely. When I found him, he was sitting calmly next to a pile of dead raider bodies. :lol

They start showing up midway through the main quest. There's also a laser pistol in Super Duper Mart and some ammo for it, and plenty of laser ammo in Robco.

Otherwise, yeah once you're out of the vault no matter which way you play, as linear quests style or freeform kill every one you meet, most of the guns are of the small arms variety for roughly half the game. In 10+ hours of Fallout 3 I've only seen one Raider packing a missile launcher and one Super Mutant wielding a mini-gun.

Although if think you can handle
Brotherhood of the Steel Paladins, they are also using fanciful light based blasters. You can try to kill or pickpocket them for their equipment at Arlington Library.

Taken from ShadowDieAway's faq hosted at gamefaqs:

From Megaton, go north past the river and you'll find the Meresti Trainyard. From there go east and you'll find a Scrapyard guarded by Raiders. He'll be there mourning his previous master. Approach him and he'll join you.

Too bad Dogmeat joins you right away without you having to do anything except find him. I remember in Fallout 1, he'd only join you if you fed him an iguana-on-a-stick or wore a leather jacket (which would remind him of his previous owner). That's no big thing, but it was a fun little bit of character-building.

It must have taken me about 30 min to figure out how to enter Rivet City. I felt stupid when I found out. :D

It took me a while to find the armory. There are a shitload of stairs. :P

Aw man, in playing Moira's quests, I ended up skipping a portion of the main quest. This makes me a sad panda. But no worries, my next playthrough will be only the main quest.

I told Dogmeat to stay at the entrance of some place so he wouldn't get himself killed on one of the missions. When I went back for him, he was gone. Anybody know where he went?

I did that but I just forgot where I left him. Just go about your business and after a few weeks game time you'll get a message that he's waiting at Vault 101.

Anyone else had problems with missing NPCs? This might help you RyoHazuki. The ID for DogMeat is 0006A772

I saw my brother got a quest about Fixing the Pipes in Megaton, turned out that NPC didn't appear to me. After googling a bit I found out 3 awesome commands for the console

"prid <ReferenceID>" + "moveto player" and "player.moveto <ReferenceID>"

First two teleports the NPC to you, the other one teleports you to them.

With that I was able to find out where the NPCs went:

I guess you can say that they were teleported to... Oblivion?

So far I've found maybe 3-4 books, but I haven't gotten that far, played maybe 10-15 hours and haven't done a lot of quests. I have found about a million of those ruined books though, I hope the good books aren't tossed into the middle of a bunch of those?
Cause then I've probably missed a few.

Exact same thing happened to me. Very annoying to say the least. 3lb might not seem like much but when you're out there scavenging items and need to get rid of a few pounds so you can run again, it feels like a real burden.

I'll just say it: Fallout 3 is my personal GOTY. There is so much freedom and nuance to it all, that I just absolutely fucking enjoy every second playing it. And I will the next time I play it. And the time after that. And probably the time after that. There is so much to do.

Sorry if these have been asked a million times, but I have a couple questions about leveling and perks:

1) Is level 20 the last level you can get perks? Or a better phrasing would be; do you ever stop getting the option to pick a perk when you level, and if so what level?

2) What is the level cap?

Level 20 is the cap, and is the last level you get perks.

This game caps you because it doesn't want you to be overpowered at everything. It's about specializing to a specific way you intend to play, and the game is balanced for it.

Most western RPGs from the 1990s had a level cap around 20. I think a lot of it had to do with making attribute points like Strength meaningful, by making them relatively permanent, and not giving you too many perks.
