The Official Fallout 3 thread of post-apocalyptic proportions!

Yeah VAST is sweet. But right now I'd rather skip all the combat out in the wastelands until I get better weapons or something. I really dont like how you have to be dancing around the enemy 1 meter away in order to hit anything, I understand this will probably get way better when I level up.
Also the controls (mouse aiming) feels really weird somehow. I'm having trouble killing enemies without wasting a lot of ammo and not using VAST.

I wish more devs would study the controls of Half-Life 2, which to me feels spot on.

The game is not a shooter.

Your ability to aim with a mouse is overridden by the die roll for accuracy.

It's not emulating a joystick acceleration curve like bioshock or far cry 2. There isn't really anything wrong with the mouse movement, it just feels like you've always got vsync on. It feels the same to me with or without, and I usually play with vsync anyway, so I don't have a problem with it. It's probably just mouse smoothing. In most games it's an option so hopefully they add it in a patch.

Understand that you probably do have Vsync on!

You see, even if you turn it off in Fallout3, it's still defaulted on. You have to force it off via your Display Driver's control panel...

Huh.

Well there you go.

Well right now it plays like a shooter, thats what I'm doing most the the time when running around in the wastelands.

The only part I have really enjoyed - combat wise, was exploring the hangout of "the family", I was using the sword from a chinese officer.. :D

Uhm alright guys I got the game yesterday. It's AWESOME! But I don't know where "the Family" is. I have checked the 3 places with no luck, and almost all the monster around are way too strong for me (the super mutants blow the hell out of me so fast!!!), any tips for leveling up / getting stronger equipment earlier, and also where is "the Family"? Or it's random?

Haha that's a side quest/..just do the main quest a bit or do the quest called Power of the Atom which you can activate in Megaton.

Talk to the ghoul in the subway station nearby. He tells you exactly where they are.

being rich in the capital wasteland isn't so bad

Such a good game. Just wiped out a slaver camp. My status is now "Paladin" at level 12.

This is my current wallpaper. :lol

Uhm I think he only told me about getting him some sugar... something, and he would give me money for them, but other than that, nothing...? I will have to check again.

I know it's a side quest, I just don't want to get too much through the main quest, I want it to last as long as possible :D
And yeah I already did the Power of the Atom quest (I fixed the bomb), and I have another 3 quests (look for "the Family", look for some kid's dad, and help the girl from Megaton who is writing a book) besides the main quest. I just want to get done with this one quest...

There is a passageway under some radioactive barrels near that ghoul. Have a look there.

There's another camp at the Lincoln Memorial. Wiping them out with Lincoln's gun while wearing his trademark hat is a lot of fun.

One of his topics is specifically about the Family.

I can't wait to play this. It sits there, already purchased and taunting me. But I must finish Dead Space first (and that's coming off the back of Fable 2, what an incredible three games to play after the other), and to get stuck into dead space I need to finish up my university stuff. And to finish up me university stuff I need motivation and energy. My life is like a rpg quest it seems.

But I guess I'll be investing a hundred plus hours ala Oblivion right?

Yeah. Seriously, if you have important things to do, do not get started on this game. Expect to lose sleep, ignoring friends and loved ones.

how do you view yourself from the front in 3rd person?

is this a PC only thing?

On consoles hold down the third-person button and move the analog sticks to adjust the camera, the camera always resets to behind the character when releasing the button though.

lol you speak the truth. I've been dating this girl for a while now, but she hasn't really been privy to my hardcore gamer ways... until Fallout 3. I've put 30+ hours into it in just over a week, which for ME (full time+ job, little chance to game) is a fuck ton of time. She is being really patient with me tho :lol :lol

Can anyone point me in the general direction of
the Lab? I want to use the Brotherhood Power armor, but the guys at GNR are telling me to find some Elder at the Lab. He is the one who can train me to use it. But I have no idea where that is. I can't get directions from any Brotherhood NPC.

He's at the Citadel, but you can't enter until you go there in the story.

There's an option in the display menu.

Mine's amber at the moment.

I play this "online" with a friend sort of. We basically get on skype run the game and share info on quests and interesting locations. This one time we went hunting for behemoths and communicated spawn spots to each other. Hella fun.
Sometimes this got awkward cause we'd be telling each other about our locations and I would get an urge to look around if my friend was close to see if I could spot him :lol
Conclusion: I'm going to buy left4dead soon.

no its not. If you are not using vats the bullet goes where you are aiming. It doesn't magically deviate based on your stats.

Pretty sure it does. Now my small arms is up to 95 they go where I'm aiming but when it was down in the 50s I'd regularly miss shots with the rifle when I had the cross hair over the enemy.

Ugh, just got the 1 RROD. Unplugged the 360/plugged it back in and its working right now, but we'll see how far I can get in the game before it dies for good.

Ok,. is this a bug? If i try to take the G.O.A.T. exam normally (without cheating) i sit on my desk and nothing happens :S

I have to take the easy way (ask the teacher for the answers) to get trough that part.

The small guns skill incrases damage, and it decreases the amount your cursors bounces around while trying to aim, thus making it harder to line up your shot.

But with a small guns skill of 35%, I can make head shots with rifles 99% of the time even if vats is waaay out of range tells me I have like a 5% chance to hit the head. Probably you are missing because you are shooting on the run and your cursor is 'bouncing' while trying to aim.

In 30 hours of playing I have not had a single instance where I was positive I nailed the shot in real time and it missed.

Nope, there is certain level of auto aim involved, yes the shots do not always go where you aim. It gets pretty obvious when i am aiming at the body of a raider and for some reason my laser rifle fires at an incredibly obvious angle hitting his hand multiple times in a row.

Its possible repair factors in as well. Maybe when you guys are missing your weapon is low on condition and in need of repair, thus affecting its accuracy? I try to keep all my guns above 80% and I never, ever have problems with aiming.

So I fixed my problem; I had to change sound settings outside of the game, since there really aren't many in-game settings for sound configuration.

1) With regards to graphics, the game is just so much more competently designed than Oblivion. On lowest settings, Oblivion looked like a load of ass with walls popping up 6 feet away. That is not true at all for this game.

2) Finally, a good hacking system! It's like Mastermind with words.

Stacking certain perks makes VATS so much more fun. I just got the Sniper perk last night, and now have that, Commando, and the one you get from "The Replicated Man". I am a critical headshot machine.

slayn said:

I wasn't missing, i was unintentionally hitting a target, and now the weapon was probably above 90% condition. Although the reload animation does get longer if the weapon is in an extremely poor condition.

So I was wandering around down in the southwest corner of the map, seeing what locations I could unlock. I happened upon a campground and found the Deathclaw plans. Ok, cool, now all I need is the hand of the mythical Deathclaw. Shrugging my shoulders, I walked out and traveled further up into the mountains. I see a red blip on my compass. Thinking it's just a Mole Rat or some such, I lazily pull my Chinese Assault Rifle out and wait.

Closer it comes, up over the ridge I see a blurred, earthen-brown shape. The shape of SATAN! A fanged, taloned beast from the pits of Hell roars up over a rock, its elongated neck supporting a head resembling that of a Triceratops, only one twisted by some mad god from beyond time. Its long, articulated legs carried it over the ground in giant, ground-eating strides. Before I had time to pull the trigger, it was upon me.

In a great, doubled-handed swipe, it ripped my head from my shoulders, which tumbled end over end in a spray of blood, to fall at the foot of a twisted tree, its bare branches seeming to withdraw from the savagery on display before it. The devil beast sniffed at my oozing corpse as I awaited the loading screen... creating a Deathclaw weapon would have to wait for another day.

I don't know what to tell you then, unless it differs per weapon. With hunting rifle, sniper rifle, scoped magnum, and silenced 10mm, the bullet goes exactly where I'm aiming. I'll have to play around with the other weapons and see if its any different.

You dont have to say anything, people already told you what is happening. The game does fudge the accuracy of your shots based on die rolls depending on your skill with the weapon and the fact that small arms have recoil. Now if you are using any of the laser weapons they will usually hit exactly where you are aiming because they dont have recoil and the shots will go straight almost always unless for some weird reason the game will direct your shots in some impossible direction on a whim of a random number generator.

I'm around 11 or 12 hours in and it's utterly fantastic. So much atmosphere, so dreary and depressing. I love the feeling of the setting, this apocalyptic setting is like a realized fantasy for me after watching similar movies.

It's grabbing me even more than Oblivion, which I loved and put around 160-170 hours in.

Minor Spoilers relating to followers
Well I thought you could only have 1 follower and dogmeat with you. I found out if you kill or dogmeat gets killed you can get another follower. Right now I have Charon and Jericho and its amazing :D

In another note... I'm starting to come across a lot of graphical glitches :(

my point being I don't believe you, because I easily have 99% accuracy with the sniper rifle even though my small guns skill is somewhere around 35%. I don't know what the devs did or didn't do, but my own experience seems grossly different from what a few others are saying. And I've heard just as many people agree with me on different boards as disagree.

I also recall a bethesda interview where they said originally your skill affected your aim but they got rid of it because players found it too frustrating to miss when they thought they should hit and it was better balancing to make your skill affect damage, not accuracy.

So I'm in Megaton early in the game, and I just noticed that
the NPC Nathan is dead, lying in the pool of water around the bomb.
Am I going to miss out on a quest because of this?
