The Official Fallout 3 thread of post-apocalyptic proportions!

Damn this game is eating my time like mad. So awesome.

I've mostly been sidequesting, and I haven't even done the first main quest outside of the vault. :lol I just reached Rivet City, is there any chance I can fuck up there and miss certain steps in the main quest if I talk to the wrong person or something?

Probably not. There are several ways to get to the next part of the main quest but i dont think they will jump you several stages forward, just onto the next step.

Yes; in general, stay out of the
science lab area, or if you go in there, only talk to non-lab coat wearing types.

Thanks for the heads up, figured that Dr. Li chick could screw things up.

How many caps do you get when you turn in fingers of enemies?
It's a laughable way to make caps. 5caps a piece - although she will raise it to 10caps if you have great karma.

I would say use it only if you want the karma boost, but if you are trying to make caps, might as well just go out and loot and bring back goods to sell to vendors.

Right-o, but really, most people aren't going to hit anywhere near the numbers you just laid out.

In reality, most people probably won't touch 1/3 of that. It's possible to come close to a max-out character of sorts, but extremely unlikely a player will do so. IMO they're much more likely to make another run through the game, which is probably what the devs intended.

Oh, and I wasn't implying only JRPGs allows for the maxed out character, just that FO3 seems to be built in opposition to that.

Nice math BTW, we need more people like you around here. :)
Thank you. I would comment that the devs probably put in too many skillbooks and gave multiple ways to raise skill points in Fallout 3. It is hard to ensure balance in any game, but I think Beth probably did their best while walking the fine line on consequences and being player friendly. Personally I would have preferred lesser skillbooks (say around 130, 10 per skill will be my sweet spot), as I generally prefer specialization. In the same stroke, I also like to test the limits of a game's systems in a legit manner.

Yeah, don't talk to
Doctor Li until you've done GNR
, otherwise it completely cuts you off from an awesome fight.

edit: beaten.

Clover is boring. She uses a Sawed-off Shotgun and I have yet to see her mow down enemies like Fawkes.
Errr...why would you not give her an Assault Rifle if you aren't pleased with how she handles a Shotgun? She was deadly in my first run through. You do know about changing the party members armour and weapons right?

I have given her different kinds of weapons and she always uses the shotgun. She seems stubborn.

I want Fawkes to follow me around on my second character but my karma is too low :(

Because Jericho uses an AR as well, unless I can give either of them something else better than the AR? I'm comparing them to Fawkes, who comes with his own Gatling Laser. Fawkes can stand in the middle of 5~6 Super Mutants in DC on Hard (we're talking a mixture of Brutes and Masters being part of the fray) and solo them, Jericho dies when he's overwhelmed, he even died during my search for the Fisto! to Ghouls and he was wearing Outcast Armor at 36 DR. I haven't fully tested Clover's endurance and firepower yet, but comparing a Sawed-off Shotgun at 100% condition with maxed Small Guns, that's 52 against a Gatling Laser's 103 at 100% condition with maxed Big Guns. A Chinese AR is only slightly better at 53, cēterīs paribus.

I just let Star Paladin Cross die. Hope she isn't important.

I hated having someone following me around anyway. Ruins the atmosphere.

With the "Bloody Mess" talent, gibbing is such fun. This is almost as much fun as Soldier of Fortune 2...

You can give them anything you want. I had Jericho running around in Outcast Power Armour sporting a Laser Rifle after I stumbled across some dead Outcasts. Take the stuff you don't want them to use off them, then they can't use it.

Do you have to give them ammo?

A Laser Rifle is still out-classed by the Sawed-off Shotgun; even the A3-21 is outclassed by the Sawed-Off Shotgun. For evil characters Clover's and Jericho's default weapon are close on paper for firepower. And no, I've tried giving them the extra 10mm Submachine Gun, Pistols, Hunting Rifles, AR, Chinese ARs, Combat Shotguns, Mini-guns, Fatman, Missile Launchers and Flamers, and none of them (Fawkes, Jericho, Star and Clover) uses those since I've used my followers as mules. It isn't "anything", more likely, "certain" things.

Jericho is using a Chinese AR btw, which is 53, compared to a Laser Rifle's 23/A3-21's 50. If he's using a Laser Rifle or the A3-21, you just downgraded his damage output.

So I chose comprehension for my lvl 20 perk. Yeah I know I wasted alot of books without it, but Ive only found 50 and there is apparently 25 per skill, so still lots to find.

Someone spoke about the Grimm Reapers Sprint as the best choice for the final perk.... I dont really see the value in it. AP is never really an issue for me as I play real time + VATS and have enough drugs to last me a life time.

If they actually did include Lovecraft references in the Dunwich house, that's amazing. I must find it, once I start exploring...

They had an entire Cthulu village in Oblivion.

I've been playing for a few hours and enjoy it so far, but I don't quite get VATS. I just push v and aim for the head. There isn't any strategy involved. I thought it would be about aiming for various body parts, shootng weapons from hands or disabling limbs. And I know I can do that stuff, but I haven't been presented with any situation that requires me to do so. It's always just queue up a bunch of shots to the head. They die. Rinse repeat..

Get further in the game until a point where multiple headshots in VATS no longer give you an instant kill. If this situation never comes up, then yeah headshots are the way to go.

Just remember guys, you have to give them ammo as well when you give them the ammo.

I was wondering why Star Paladin Cross refused to wield any other ranged weapons than her laser pistol... but when she suddenly started using the flamer, I was wondering, what the hell happened there (I didn't give it to her... seems like she picked it up for herself... and the ammo for it! Clever girl :p).

There's a contradiction here. If Star picked up the Flamer and ammo by herself, what's the point of giving them to Star in the first place?

I've heard stuff about unique weapons and armor, but I've yet to run across any. I do have a named weapon that I got off the corpse of a merchant at the bottom of a slaver dungeon, but aside from the name and its high damage its otherwise unremarkable. Is that how uniques are in F3?

Uniques are normally 20% better than their counterparts. You can check the list here and see for yourself: http://fallout.wikia.com/wiki/Fallout_3_weapons

I mostly aim for the head, but at a prohibitive distance I'll generally aim for the torso and I've been thrust into situations where a 97% chance of shooting the minigun or missile launcher out of an opponent's hands has been more tempting than a 67% at a headshot.

Awesome, I picked up the gun with the highest damage among small guns.

There are quests which will require you to sneak into a facility and perform a function, while not killing any enemies. In those situations, you will be very glad to have VATS where you can cripple a hard hitting opponent.

And like others have mentioned, higher level beasties will laugh at your head shots, which is actually pissing me off at the moment.

Yeah but they aren't immune to weapon degradation either. I wondered why Jericho was using a nail board to fight with until I found out his AR was broken completely. In that case giving him a Laser Rifle was the best course of action because I didn't have a spare CAR to fix his with.

Anyone else breaking a shit-ton of lock picks or am I still just too low (35)?

You skill only determines what which locks you can attempt (I think). All you need to do is slowly rotate until you feel resistance. You should get the hang of it eventually.

Got my copy from Gamefly (PS3 version) and damn there's a lot of stuff to do. I'm in Megaton, but I've already got so many side quests to do.

I didn't like Oblivion but I'm really drawn into Fallout 3 so far.

Hurm, WTF.

So I'm doing a lot of sidequests and just general exploring when I suddenly stumble across Vault 112 and then it tells me that the "follow in his footsteps" quest is done and that I've already been to GNR Radio. :P

I can revert to a previous save. I want to know if I should continue down this path. Is this a legit way to play -- i.e., "stumble" into completing your goal for the main quest while doing exploration?

Also, if I skip all the GNR stuff, am I missing out on a lot?

Yeah its fine. You just skipped a couple of steps, you would have gotten there eventually.

I mean, it's kinda cool that the game IS so open ended that you can stumble into completion. When I got to vault 112, I was like, WHOA, creepy... another vault!

There really is a crazy epic sense of discovery. But then I don't want this game to end. So yeah, I'm going to revert to an older save. Kinda sucks now that I know where Vault 112 is though. :P

Oh the pitfalls of sandbox RPGs. I guarantee you'll never have this "problem" with a JRPG, for better or worse. And at this point, after like 30 hours in FO3, I'm thinking it's much much worse to lack freedom.

right now.

I'm simply amazed with this game. I previously thought that Bethesda would just copy Oblivion over on another disc and stamp "Fallout" on it. I had no intentions of getting this game, but then I fell into the hype after IGN's review. This is one of the few times that I'm happy I jumped on the bandwagon.
The game is similar to Oblivion, but the atmosphere is so much more intriguing to me. Now that I've played a significant chunk of the game (I'm right before the last mission on the main quest) I have to admire Bethesda's ability to add so much detail to the game story-wise. It's amazing how I can walk in the middle of nowhere and get a quest, etc. My only complaints about the game are the sub-par animations and the recurring objects...but those are only minor quibbles. I also wish that the game ran more smoothly on the PS3, but whatever. It still runs decently.

FOr some reason my evil level has been dropping, even though I haven't done anything good except kill tenpenny(along with the rest of the tower, I ate every body and sold the ears of all the good people, not to mention looting the whole place). I'm down to fiend, while I was up to Urban superstition, which I believe is just past Harbinger of War. Anyone know the whole list or how far it goes?

PC version maxxed all settings. GTX 280, may have to do with DX10?

I'm also running everything maxed on an ATI 4850 (except with like 8x AA etc. settings instead of 8/15 or whatever, I think?). I forced dx9 for Warhead, but I don't think I changed any settings for Fallout 3, and I definitely saw some sunrays through a crack in the wall at one point (isn't that a DX10 feature?). Of course, there may be blur in the VATS animations, and not otherwise. Do you have motion blur if you spin around or move?

I know its in vats, havent paid attention when normally playing. Some status effects have it too.

Replicated Man / Rivet City:
I'm back with the info and I can't find Harkness. I have wandered through the entire ship twice (aside from the lab because I don't want to run into Zimmer yet) and I don't see him. Where can he usually be found, aside from the entrance bridge?
Also, I want to get both the Plasma Rifle from Harkness and the Combat Perk from Zimmer, so I should go to Harkness first then to Zimmer, right?

Harkness is the guy who greeted you the first time you stepped foot on Rivert City aka, the guard standing on the other side of the bridge, before the entrances to Rivert City. Yes, if you want both bonuses, talk to Harkness first to make him recall his memories as an android, then tell him about Zimmer. He will give you permission to kill both Zimmer and his bodyguard. Next talk to Zimmer and tell him Harkness is the android he's looking for to get Wired Reflexes reward, and now you can kill Zimmer as he's no longer protected by his quest giver status.

According to this page...

Harbinger of War
Urban Superstition
Villian of the Wastes
Fiend

So you are getting more evil if that list is correct.

Holy shit dude :lol

Anyway, I reloaded and am now on my way to GNR building.

But first, I had to stop off at Bethesda ruins and wipe the floors with Raider blood. :D

This game is so amazing. I'm like level 14 now with 100 small arms and 100 sneak and 100 repair and like 80+ speech. If there's enemy leveling in this game, it is VERY subtle. I almost feel bad for Raiders now as I literally blow them to pieces with my hunting rifle and combat shotgun. Even the Yao-guai monsters are almost 1-hit kills for me now.

There was one scenario where I was fighting some raiders and suddenly a yao-guai jumped right in front of me and started attacking me. I quickly hit VATS where I had 2 shots. I put the first one into the monster's head, and the second one into the torso of a raider that was about 100 yards out. The first shot decapitated the yao-guai in mid-leap while the second shot disintegrated the raider.

SO BAD ASS.

Ahh. So many hours eaten away today. I got to level 8 and got some achievement for having high karma. (My picture is Jesus now)

Anyways, I got some key from the underground tunnel, Grady I believe, and I don't know where this package is.

I'm going to upgraded my gfx drivers, but my system seems to run fine EXCEPT when I'm recording HDTV or I use VATS and then it pauses for about 3-5 seconds.

GeForce 8800 GTS
2GB Ram
Core 2 Duo E6850
1280x1024 with all high settings except low AA and filtering because I don't give a shit.

I've been doing that with every town I visit..random traders walking around are like a gold mine..killing them and then stealing everything from their bodies, eatien their corpses, then stealing everything from their two-headed cows, then killing the cows, then find the town were you can use their supplies-key..such a blast!!!!!! :p

Went to Level 20 being evil.. :p

You don't need to go to evil to do that. Just donate to the church and scrap metal to the water facility when possible to even it out.
