The Official Fallout 3 thread of post-apocalyptic proportions!

You don't need to go to evil to do that. Just donate to the church and scrap metal to the water facility when possible to even it out.

Really? Wow, I'm good, but maybe I'll still kill some traders if that's the case.
Are there any drawbacks to killing the traders?

BOOM -- HEADSHOT!

I love the sky and ambience of this shot.

Oops, punched this Raider a little too hard!

Looking for quick help.

I thought every vault had a bobble head? Im in vault 92 now and cant find it... anyone know where it is?

On an unrelated note, I think it was Matt on LAN Party that said how cool it is having the radio playing. Well I gotta emphatically agree, as you walk around and 3Dog talks about you and your dad and plays music from the era, it really adds to the atmosphere.

Brilliant game.

I freaking love hearing 3dog give updates to the Wastland on what I've been doing. The first time I heard him say what I did to the slavers was kick ass. Not only that he calls me a
Vault Legend
now or some other cool shit like that.

For Che and others who stumble upon vault 112 or other later parts of the main quest, you can still do the GNR radio stuff, so there's no reason to reload. It'll just offer a different reward than news of your father. They pretty much covered all the bases.

Don't you miss out on a special fight or something?

Che's last save was just 1 minute before entering, so no worries.

No, the big fight still happens. Yeah, it was no loss in his case. I was just saying it so people don't feel restricted in what they do.

I already feel like the game was spoiled a little but maybe that's by design.

So if I'd have continued exploring Vault 112, does it shorten the game a great deal?

This is excellent news! Thanks for the headsup.

So what exactly changes?

Do you miss out on some important dialogue or facts you were have supposed to have known? Or is that rather for Rivet City?

Freaking game. I get absorbed in the landscape and scouring for junk, and then somebody starts shooting me out of a building. :lol I've jumped at least twice so far...if someone ever comes up and is friendly, I'll probably shoot them out of reflex.

Performance question: I'm running 4GB e8400 3.0 GHz with an ATI 4850, but outside I still get a bit jumpy performance running 4xAA and 4x filtering, everything else max. I'm doing vsync lock. Is there anything that someone can suggest turning down a tiny bit that might have a decent effect on the outside framerate without losing much graphical quality? Even with the max quality, I still see objects appear suddenly in the distance, but it doesn't really look bad.

I'd just turn down the 4xAA and increase the resolution.

I'm already at 1680x1050 fullscreen (my max resolution). I could go down to 2xAA I suppose...also, 3Dog and his station rocks. The problem is that smooth jazz is too SOOTHING for post-apocalyptia! Someone trying to blow my head off becomes that much more jarring. :(

*edit again* CRIPES. I decide to go exploring at night, and wander into the
Springdale School or whatever it's called. Ravenholm flashbacks...I was relieved to only find an ordinary raider so far. ;_;

So I'm suppose to hand Sydney the tape I found at the hotel, except I can't find her in the Ghoul city. Any ideas?

No. You won't have had to do the GNR radio quest in order to find your father, but the quest could still be done. It basically shifts that portion into a side quest. All you would have missed is a boring conversation in Rivet City, and you'd still have to go there anyway. No events past vault 112 can be skipped, far as I know. Unless you can
break into Raven Rock early.

Your father and Doctor Li will explain everything, plus there are recordings, so there really isn't any information that's missed by hitting 112 early.

I just killed Moriarty (sp?) because he is just a jerk and the whole Megaton city is against me! I killed Jericho and another 'npc' on the way, and a few settlers too, lol..

At least I spent some time checking Moriarty's computer and all that, so it's all good...

I also killed this guy with the two girls on the way to DC..

I think I should stop killing NPC's, lol..

As far as stumbling on story elements earlier than youre supposed to, a similar thing happened to me. When I was meant to go to GNR to continue the quest, I went and questioned the Doc at Rivet just coincidentally which superseded the GNR stuff. I reloaded and am glad I did because I wouldnt want to miss that GNR section.

Just finished the Nukacola Challenge yesterday which was the last side quest I had to complete. Doing all of the side quests basically doubles the length of the game.

A few questions:

01. Why is there no XP gained after 20 if it shows 21 as next? Saving later levels for DLC expansions?

02. Even after having played all the main quest missions, all the side missions, and hitting some places just for nuka cola bottles, I've got 69 locations discovered. I can get to 100 easily since everything is plotted on the map after hitting level 20. Will I come across the rest of the super mutant behemoths just walking around to the other places on the map? The last one I came across was inside the capitol building and I went there thinking it was a route to the ranger compound.

03. One of the funniest things that happened in the game:
Way, way after completing the Tenpenny Tower side quest the "peaceful" way I go back only to see that the ghouls murdered all the humans and piled the bodies in the basement. :lol Is there a way to find Tenpenny's body to get his clothing and room key? He wasn't in the body pile.

04. Can another dozen opportunities for speech successes be found? I've got 38. Whenever I play this down the line I'm going to focus on different skills than I have now (my speech success chance is usually pretty high)

And even then I never got started with making weapons. It's crazy how much you can do in this game.

Spoiler tagged, I didn't know that :(

Still I'm off to GNR anyway :D

Just got to GNR... wow, fucking epic!

Dropped a couple nukes on the bohemoth. Second one tore his leg right off. :D

Can't find her anywhere. Don't tell me there was a glitch and she got lost somewhere between rivet city and ghoul city... :/

I hope those aren't spoilers...

Regarding the game, where can I learn all I need to know about drugs? :D I'm planning a mostly drug-free run, at least the first time...i.e. only using healthy things like stim-paks and not Jet or Psycho. My questions:

* Which ones are "addictive"? What happens if you're addicted?
* Specifically, is the buff one bad? Do they all just last a short time period?
* Is there any harm in never sleeping? I can't remember if I heard this mentioned.

Thanks!

I'm pretty sure all drugs are addictive. Buffout, psycho, jet, mentats.
You don't need to sleep, but if you get enough sleep in decent conditions you get the 'well rested' status for half a day and earn an additional 1/2 of normal experience. (I think) Sleeping for an hour or two is a great and cheap way to heal yourself too.

I know, I'm just a wimp with creepy situations or surprises in games, and I thought it was funny. :P

Thanks for the other stuff. I need to find if there's a better place to sleep than paying 100 caps for the bed in the saloon (how long does that last...just one day I'd assume?).

I meant if you're out in the field or a dungeon and you run across a matress or something just catch a quick nap for insta-heal.

Also, you can get your own bed/house in megaton or tenpenny tower by finishing the 'power of the atom' quest.

wow finding and discovering all the valuts out there in the wasteland is fucking awesome. Iam curently in valut 106 and the charackters brain is messing with you
somethimes everything goes blue and you see "old" thinks..once in a "blue" mode i had to fight butch again :D"

LOOOOL
i had started to game and Vault 106 was my first random dungeon i had entered.. I got those blue screen too and i thought it was a BUG!.. i was cursing all the time cuz characters were keep disappearing, textures are changing in a second. There is not proper transition between two things, it feels like a glitch :(

:lol Funniest thing ever

I was in the subway under Dupoint Circle and low on health, so I activated a Protectron to help clean out the tunnels. When two Super Mutants saw it, they actually laughed and said HAHA SILLY ROBOT! WALK LIKE MR. POTATO HEAD!

The Protectron asked for their tickets, and one of them replied SURE HERE'S MY TICKET, and blew its head off with a shotgun while the other giggled like a hyena.

If you complete Power of the Atom quest, it gives you a safe house depending on your alignment. If you haven't made up your mind to go evil or good yet, head for Springvale School, north of Megaton. Clear out the Raiders in there and make it your temporary base. I think it is safe to use containers that are blue even if you don't own them, just avoid those that are red. Don't waste your caps on renting beds. ^

Your robot in your safe house dispenses Purified Water on a regular basis, although I'm not sure what the criteria is. I've tried waiting 5 days in game, but no dice, yet after clearing out a Raider camp I'm given more Purified Water. I hope you haven't killed the 2 Wastelanders outside Megaton and Rivert City, as giving them Purified Water is an easy way to get good Karma - 50 points per Purified Water to be exact. I'm not sure if there are other Wastelanders in dire need of water though...

Springvale School creeps me out. :lol Also yikes, my 4850 was up to 76C while playing in the open. :( I guess I'd better keep the fan at 60%...

Exploration is fun. Nothing like jogging across a bridge and meeting a guy with a
flamethrower
.

Serious question about a follower!!

If you have the
Sargeant follower and you store some of your stuff in there, what happens to your stuff if he dies or leaves you due to karma change
?

:lol

Also "Well Rested" gives you a 10% Exp bonus from what I remember.

I know this is a wierd question, but how do I turn the camera so I can see my own character? :P

Only just started. Entered the first town called Megaton. I appreciate what the game is trying to do by combining open ended WRPG's and FPS games, but it feels a bit dissapointing in both area's. We'll see though. :)

If I may ask, what specifically is disappointing you? (the game is definitely NOT a FPS, by the way...you can try aiming and shooting manually but the general impression is that it's not an effective way to do things, as far as I know)

Regarding the camera, pressing F toggles the two camera views. You can also use the mouse scroll wheel to adjust the view closer to you and further away, and if you click the scroll wheel down and move the mouse, you can rotate around your character for taking screenshots and such.

I don't know if I'm going to be able to play this game much at night...either real-life night or (especially) game night. :P My lame experiences so far in early traveling:
Springvale school with all the bodies was CREEPY. Augh. That it was "just" raiders was a relief, but I still didn't feel like trying to loot that place further. Augh underground areas.

Then Big Town...which hints at the Lamplight Village story or whatever (I haven't gotten there so I know nothing except the hints). It's so sad, and then I blew a pile of ammo on two rocket launching super mutants, and another one with a sniper rifle. I need to head back there and pick up the missile launcher if it's still there...the seemingly unlimited ammo the rocket launcher mutant had was pretty lame, though. I don't think anyone in the village died before I left...

Then the "town" on the bridge. Yay creepy building with murdered people. "Activate Mr. West" o_O

I just flamed him a bit, but for the most part I just watched the brotherhood guys take him down. It got me some good armor cause two were killed in the fight. If I can I always lure my enemies into either a brotherhood squad, outcast brotherhoods or traders in hope that one of them gets killed and I can loot their armor and the supermutant's guns. If nothing else it's cool to watch. Best chance of a kill is a supermutant with a mini-gun.

It's a laughable way to make caps. 5caps a piece - although she will raise it to 10caps if you have great karma.

I would say use it only if you want the karma boost, but if you are trying to make caps, might as well just go out and loot and bring back goods to sell to vendors.

Yeah, 5/10 caps is nothing and I already had great Karma. I just got Finesse instead.

Question about the Head of State questline:
Do you have to escort Hannibal and the others all the way to the Lincoln Memorial or can they get there safely by themselves?
