The Official Fallout 3 thread of post-apocalyptic proportions!

A pic of me and Charon hanging out in the northern wasteland.
As you can see, we were very greatful to the brotherhood outcasts who gave us their armor.

Just wondering: if people are using Tenpenny as their pad, how the heck are you getting all the way across the map to D.C.? I thought a lot of folks found the idea of fast travel revolting. ???

Blue containers should be safe, just avoid the red ones. I've been using Springvale School's lockers for a good ten hours before moving my stuff into Tenpenny Tower.

Each theme is supposed to come with a skillbook as well.

Well, I did a little test to see. I'm not sure if by red you mean a box that belongs to someone. I used a metal box in Moira's shop. I put just the power fist in their and it hasn't disappeared yet!

Having to go through all those subways every time you wanted to drop something off would be way too tedious.

Kind of wondering where I am in the game. Can anyone give me a little help? Big spoilers in the black!
Dad just died. How much of the main storyline do I have left?

Thanks! Love the game so much, it's all I think about when I'm at work. Must go home and play.... I think I'm kind of close to being able to wear power armor, which I'm so pumped for.

Bump... it was at the end of the last page.

Since you're already doing it, can you test it further? Fast forward time by 24 hours for 7 days and see if it is still there. If you want more accurate results you can test up to a fortnight or a month if you're so inclined. Just get back to us on your findings. I haven't tested this myself and I'm curious too. I really won't use the Power Fist as well, it is quite rare and is material for repairing Fisto!. Try something worthless, like Police Batons, Lead Pipes or some junk that you're very sure isn't used for custom weapons (forks, cups, glasses etc.)

i'm at that point myself and you have
4 quests to go in the main quest storyline
Don't know how long each of them is though and how many sidequests you still have going. I'm taking a bit of a break now that I have my power armor and discover more of the wasteland.

Well, I haven't played any today! But I did this 2 days ago(real life time lol) and played about 6 hours yesterday(at least 10 in-game days went by!) while I played and I checked right before I quit. I'll try in a minute and wait for about 30 days and see!

So I am close to the power armor? Sweet.

Man thanks so much for the quick response! I think I'm going to do a butt-load of serious exploration myself, now. :D

Anyone else disappointed with the Bloody mess perk? Sometimes it's kind of cool, but it's a bit too over the top. I liked it best in FO2 where usually what would happen is the whole right side of your enemy would be taken out, or like if you had a submachine gun they would stand there as the bullets took off the limbs and the head one by one.

Just finished installing this on the 360. Takes about 6.5GB of space but already I've noticed faster loading and far less stuttering in places.

Damn disappeared, what kind of machine are you playing on to get those beautiful images?

Sadly what those screens don't show is the sub-45FPS I get running that at 1680x1050. The game automatically set everything to very high, but I'm getting a lot of stuttering and VATS slows down something terrible. I can't figure it out. 2GB of RAM is good, but I'd need 4GB if I want to get close to 60FPS up in this bitch.

Some results to share about Themes in Tenpenny Tower's safe house:

Raider - gives you a bunch of common weapons (AR, grenade, Hunting Rifle) but I can't find the skill book here. Neat looking, plenty of skulls and hanging corpses.
Science - A couple of components (Motorcycle Gas Tank, Turpentine), but more importantly, a Science skill book.
Pre-War - exactly as it says. Items are just cheap food, although there's a lot of them. Can't locate a skill book here.
Wasteland Explorer - mixed bag of AR, pistol, Hunting Rifle, loose ammo and food. Again, can't find skill book.
Love Machine- Speech skillbook. Room is decorated like Eulogy's house, and there really isn't any useful items here.
Vault - no skill book, or I can't find it anyway. Items are just food.

At Barter 31, I was paying 1440+ for each Theme; at Barter 41 I was still paying 1400, just saved 40 caps. >.< I don't if know Lydia's Barter skill is keeping my Barter in check, but 10 points sure didn't make a whole lot of difference. The themes are just that, skins to give your safe house some color. I don't even think that + 2 to Speech/Science is worth 1400 caps each.

I don't know how anybody could dislike the fast travel, if it wasn't available I doubt I would even still be playing after 30hours, would have gotten old really fast.

I'm kinda disappointed we don't get any kind of mount or vehicle, I would love to be able to drive around on those bikes you see laying around everywhere, and mostly in good shape too.

Nice, I just found
a talking Power Armor beneath Old Olney. Every time an enemy is near it says "time to kick some ass" or something similar

Personally I was hoping for one of those robo-horses you see adverts for.

My gripe with fast travel was with Oblivion. You should have to discover a place before you can fast travel to it (yes, I know that was partly the case, but some of the towns were immediately available, which irked me).

That's a bit past halfway through, and if I remember correctly if you just push through the main quest you should have about 2-3 hours to go. Not something I'd recommend doing unless you just want to get it over with; the main quest is not of very high quality at all.

That's a shame, since the side quests aren't of particularly high quality either. The leveling system and VATS are really the only good things about this game. It's a good game overall, far better than Oblivion, but highly overrated.

The hell?!:lol
I just arrived at Paradise Falls (is it?) and everyone is ..very welcome to my character..like talking about how they were expecting me...excusing themselves for walking in my line..giving me bottlecaps, ammo and items just by talking to them... :lol :lol

Yeah, I've been killing everyone with a store and a medkit..and then some more.. :p

Heh, the guy at the gate wanted me to pay 500 caps to get in to town, to hell with that. Bunch of damn slavers, so I massacred the entire town, even got good points for doing it.

Hehehe..the guy said they were expecting me and gave me a gun with ammo , to capture people to become slaves and get extra caps from each one...then everyone inside is like like talking about wanting a drink with me and stuff..and the leader sold me one of his slaves as a bodyguard..wanted 1000 caps but got him to sell her for 500.. :p

Then went to the clinic and kill the doctor there and stole the stimpacks.... and saved/quit there. :p

That's an alignment based easter egg from Beth. Good characters have random settlers in Megaton running up to you and handing out items and ammo to you; for evil characters Paradise Falls' residents will give you plenty of ego and items as well.

The Alien Blaster is turning out to be more powerful than any of my Big Guns, possibly sans Fatman. Its critical rate is insane (100%?) and it often OHKOs most things. Can't wait to try this on SuperMutant Masters, Yao Guais and Deathclaws.

I still think it was a mistake calling this game fallout 3.

For all intents and purposes. this is a reboot of the franchise. Should have started with just calling it Fallout.

Yeah it is a shame I've been reading about how the ending is garbage, but Fallout has always been about the journey.

And closure. There was no mention of half the quests i did at the end of the game. And the ones that were mentioned it was just a telling me what i already knew, as if i'd gone senile or something. :lol

Fully agree with the first guy, though I did really enjoy it for what it was.

It's not without a few hiccups, but Fallout 3 has easily moved to the top of my favorite games ever.

edit: updated OP a little bit.

Tenpenny Tower shennanigans:

So, on my visit to the tower I learn that one Roy Williams is trying to get his ghoul friends to live in there. Naturally, the snobs that currently live in said tower don't agree with the idea, save for a few liberal-minded individuals. Feeling that it would be a good way to get back at Tenpenny's attempt to nuke Megaton, I decide to help the ghouls. However, I realize that bloodshed wasn't necessary, so I seek a peaceful solution. After a few days of playing the mediator, Tenpenny & co. agrees to receive the new ghoul tenants. Feeling quite upbeat about settling the potentially explosive situation peacefully, I set out to mind other business.

So... days later I come back to re-supply and sell some loot. Curiously... all the human tenants are gone. Upon inquiring Roy about their whereabouts, I receive a "they met with unfortunate accidents" response. The nerve! After all the trouble to help these decaying douchenozzles, they betray our trust, our goodwill and willingness to adapt!

So I gave in to my darkest moment, and blood now covers the walls of Tenpenny Tower. Once a thriving commune, it is now a grim reminder of the reality of Wasteland.

This was really awesome, this game keeps delivering. I really felt betrayed by those bastards as I put a sincere effort to get them to live peacefully with the humans.

Just beat the game.

That ending sucked.

Ya, I beat it just now and agree with you.

Me three.

I had planned on not finishing the game for a long long time, but it was a slippery slope and I got pulled right in by accident. Ending spoilers:
To anyone who also finished Oblivion, wasn't it basically the same ending? From what I remember the King got all giant just like Liberty and you followed him to final victory. Strange. And the choice seemed arbitrary at the end, and even though I was loaded up with anti-radiation I sacrificed myself for the grater good...then even the images they showed at the end had no correlation to things I had done in the game! No mention of disarming Megaton, saving the slaves or anything! Just random shots of me talking to NPC's!
Anyway, I immediately started over all pissed off. Now, screw dad, his project and the main quest completely, I'm going to become an uber-rich badass!

Oh yeah it's a great game, just not that good of a Fallout game, IMO of course. I'd buy and play Fallout 4 as well if Bethesda made it.

yeah fallout 3, doesnt make me weary of fallout 4, like I was before I played 3, just work a bit on the world reaction to players doing unexpected stuff, HIRE NEW ANIMATORS, and pay some intern and ron pearlman to sit down one afternoon and make good/neutral/bad powerpoint slides for every quest/town for the endings. Everything else to me was great.

I can't believe people don't like the humor in this game. Yes the humor is different than the previous entries and far mor subtile but it is still pretty good. I mean everything played on GNR has some sort of second meaning.

The more reading I do about Fallout 3, the more the game sound like my sort of thing.

Found a more detailed description of how Level Scaling works:

"Fortunately, Fallout 3 will not use Oblivion’s level-scaling, but contrary to what you may have read elsewhere, scaling isn’t completely discarded.

The first important change is that creatures never scale up in abilities to match your level, so each Deathclaw in F3 will always have the same attributes, regardless of your character’s level when you have the misfortune of encountering it.

Second, each territory in the game is now assigned an encounter level that determines the level and equipment of critters when you discover that area, so a first-level character that wanders into an area designated as 'encounter level 5' will be badly outmatched by the inhabitants. Loot is also generally scaled to the area's encounter level, but some items will be hand-placed, which is similar to how Morrowind handled loot.

An area’s level doesn’t remain static, but it gets locked as soon as you enter it. If you enter a city block designated as a level 5 area, it will remain a level 5 area and never scale up in difficulty. Areas you haven’t yet encountered do “tether up” in difficulty level, but the tethering level doesn’t linearly scale with your level, so there’s still an advantage to gaining experience levels.

The city block that’s initially designated as a level 5 area will tether up and be designated as a level 8 area if you don’t wander into it until you’re a level 15 character. But since an area’s level is locked once you enter it, you’ll still get the satisfaction of returning to a previously difficult area and annihilating it's residents once you have a more powerful character.

This is from PlanetFallout, there is more

I've pretty much finished everything "important" in Fallout 3...

I don't know what to think. On one hand, it wasn't bad. I'd say its the best game Bethesda's ever made.

But on the other hand, why did they go through the trouble of getting the fallout license if they weren't going to make a fallout game? Aside from the fact that the storyline is PATHETICALLY weak, they've screwed with the formula so much that it's barely recognizable.

I don't want to be lumped in with the people who have been damning this game for the past 3 years. For the most part while I was playing it I had a positive reaction to this game. But it also drove me to go back and play through Fallout 1 again. And the further I get into that, and the more I get into the area of reflection, the more I realize that this 11 year old game did everything about twenty times better.

And bethesda has a lot of nerve for what they did to harold.

Please explain this, because I personally don't see it.
