9 chapters in Moira's book? Damn, this quest is going to take me forever to finish!

yeah it takes a while, but if you actually do everything she's asking including the "optional" portions the rewards are WELL worth it IMO.

Wow, looks like this is all I'm doing until it's done. Forget the main quest! Who cares about Dad?

Is that a bad idea? Do they get really tough eventually?

Also, how does leveling work in this game - is it like Oblivion where the enemies are scaled to your level or is it like every other RPG where you can eventually become the ultimate badass?

No. The enemies don't scale. You could find a death claw at level 1 and be slaughtered in moments. But for the most part, you'll be feeling like a badass by level 10.

Why is VATS so laggy with AA on? I could never figure it out, I had to turn AA off.... turned it back on to 8x today and I forgot how much better it looks.

I'm pretty sure there is some scaling going on in the overworld at least, dungeons seem pretty static. I seem to see far less mole rats and rabid dogs at level 19, and just about every patrolling super mutant I run into has a mini-gun.

It's much better than oblivion but it still does that thing of making sure you're never more than a minute away from death when you're wandering around, even at level 20.

It is essentially a long tutorial (a good one!), easing your way through the basics of the game. Some optionals can be tough, but they are, still, optional. I'd say that it should be everyone's first priority starting out.

This. I barely see raiders anymore, it's pretty much all super mutants. And not just around DC.

Also, as large as it is, it doesn't force you into the real tough areas of DC or anything. So, yeah, definitely a great starting quest.

If there's more than 1 you can cripple their antennae and they'll attack each other, other than that head shots are the best option.

Tempting them on to mines works really well also when you get to the tougher variants.

I've checked everywhere for this stupid quest...im trying to get into vault 87, im in the lamplight caverns and Im supposed to find the mayor....where the fuck is he?

Holy fuck. Somebody with the guide of the game help me. I was walking toward the republic of dave (upper rigth part of the map) and found an antenna or power station.

Normally I don't check of them, but this one was locked so I entered it and there was a switch. That switch activated the power and amplified a radio (zulu I think) in which a guy is asking for help as he and his family are captive in a place "just outside the DC area".

Does somebody knows where are they?

Also, where he hell do you get the oasis quest?

Did it add a quest or a note? Check your map for places of interest you haven't traveled to yet, it's probably added.

Not at all. I have checked nearby but can't find anything :/

that poor family is trapped man, I gotta do something!

So that's what he said. The radio message was so noisy I couldn't make it out.
I've found probably 10 or so radio towers, most only send out beeps and boops though.. I really wonder what's the purpose of these towers..

This is one of those "undeclared" mini-quests so you won't get a marker. The drainage ditch you're looking for is slightly to the south southeast of the tower, IIRC. You don't have to go all the way to DC, the grate is literally only a few more steps away. The signal also gets stronger the closer to get to it.

itxaka said:

I'm not sure about how I got the marker, but Oasis is nearly all the way to the north center of the map. The door is hidden in a gully formed by the giant rock formation you run into there on the western side. Once you get in there or discover the place, the quest kicks in. It's a really good one, too, so be prepared to make some interesting choices.

Fuck you Dave. All I wanted to do was run for President.

I think I came across one of these "undeclared" mini-quests. I don't even remember where I was, I think I was in one of the metro stations, but I came across some note or recording (I forget which), but it said I needed to deliver some package and gave instructions on where to find the package. I believe the package is a piece of lingerie. I found it and then some guy came out of nowhere and asked me to give it to him. I killed him of course. Now I need to deliver this package somewhere.

Does this sound familiar to anyone? If so, is it worth completing? I didn't get any quest notes on it, so not really sure what I need to do.

Where did you find the room with the package?

I found the note and the key, but never found the package. It says it's on a room white a "circular light" but couldn't find it :(

Yes its a sidequest. I still have the package, at the moment not going to complete it. When I gave the guy the package I got +Karma, my guy is evil so I said fuck that and reloaded. From what it seems I may be able to run into some criminals later on to give it to instead, I dunno, for now I'm holding on to it.

Rep. of Dave:
Anyone else disappointed with the lack of interaction here, I was expecting to be able to run for President or fix the election (in my favor), but all you can do is fix it for Rosie or Bob. And if you clear the place out, and run off the kids, you can't even sleep in the house.

Was hoping for a little more, at least I got a nice named hunting rifle out of it.

I was disappointed in that as well, especially after the hype about the "200 endings" had come out. Even if it was in the form of a text report or a GRN broadcast to slides showing your changes, I'd be happy. Fortunately, getting there was where all of the fun was. I'm not sure, but I thought I saw a few changes in the Wasteland
such as more of those green, glowing mushrooms along with the shout out from GNR about trees if you went the "growth" route for Oasis. The only major ending change I saw was with the Lincoln Memorial, but I remember thinking to myself "Come on, I know I did more than THAT".

IIRC
the room is in the same location, in a tunnel with a train in it. It's not so easy to spot 'cause the train hides the door: you have to go to the other side of the train and you should see a door with an orange rotating light. Once you see it, you can't miss it.

I just finished Tranquility Lane and had a couple questions:

1) Are there any "epic" battles in the rest of the main quest? I'm talking as big or bigger then
fighting the behemoth in front of GNR
. One of my favorite aspects of Oblivion was the group battles. I know there is a sidequest that has you defending a town from super mutants, which I plan to do soon.

2) Do the Enclave come into the main storyline at all?

I'm also hoping to find a cool Brotherhood of Steel sidequest, if anyone knows of one.

Unfortunately, no. The most epic moment is towards the end, and even that is so corny the epicness sort of flies right by.

2)
Yep, they're a huge part of it later on.

Can I get into paradise falls without getting negative karma? I thought maybe that nutjob sniper being enslaved wouldn't give me any but it does. I haven't found a good way past that quest yet.

I don't think so, but only takes one
VIP enslaved to get in
, and that barely lowers your Karma at all. I did it and easily got up to the maximum Karma shortly afterward.

Lame. I'm going the hero guy so I don't want to enslave someone. Hell, I just saved one of them.

Yes! Thats exactly how i felt when i was doing it. I kept reverting back to saves to try different things but it always turns out the same.

Also, has anyone had trouble with the cannibalism perk on 360? When i eat people my health doesn't go up.

You can always bribe the guard, but he asks for something ridiculous like 500 caps.

Or you can do what I did and go in guns ablazin'. Just be prepared for a hell of a fight! Around 12 people will be gunning for you at once when you enter Paradise Falls proper.

You dont' get any negative Karma for killing any of the slavers, you actually get positive karma for killing a couple of them.

It isn't part of the main quest, but there are actually 5
SuperMutant Behemoths in the world for you to find. However, don't make the assumption that there will always be a Fatman lying around somewhere... It takes a couple of shots from the Alien Blaster to finish off one of those.

Egg Shen said:
I think that the reason is simple, if not explicitly made: Colonel Autumn's role as the protector of America and his personal ideology demanded that there also be a symbol to represent that change to the people. What better lightning rod to capture that than an actual President if only the idea of one? Autumn was certainly no George Washington. In much the same way that MacArthur's post-war needs in Japan pushed him to maintain Hirohito as the Emperor (albeit without divine status) as an element of cohesion, I would wager that Autumn's acceptance of Eden's role play into the same reasons. Autumn was using the President, in as much as Eden was using him as a blunt instrument, one that can easily be replaced...hence his logical betrayal when a better tool appeared on the scene. Another piece of Autumn's personality is revealed by Eden, showing that he may not subscribe to the genocide that Eden's logical mind apparently requires for America's rebirth.

I don't think Eden's intellectual maturity was as complex as Harkness', though, especially with the clinical way some of his dialogue was written. I gave me the impression that it was a pre-War relic playing off of recorded impressions and expectations without truly understanding any of it, making it easy to deceive since it lacked the conviction to hold onto what it perceived as its ideals. Eden's decision to purge the wasteland of aberrant mutants can be explained as an act as a conscious being, as you put it, but it can also be the result of a pre-programmed Enclave directive. Remember, the West Coast had attempted to do the same thing in FO2, something acknowledged by Eden. It can be argued that it may be a part of a core set of scenarios stored within it for Wasteland reclamation despite the veneer of independent intelligence it hid behind.

Still, I felt more could have been done with this sequence, but inferences can still be drawn to explain at least some of the gaps. But I agree that we shouldn't have to do the work that better exposition could have delivered.
Your explanations are sound, and it would have given FO3 that much more respect it needed for its ending. I didn't play FO2, so the references you cited are lost on me until I read your post. Indeed, your interpretation of FO3's main quest ending has much to do with "Stealing Independence", and it would have been a nice parallel to draw comparisons with. On Colonel Autumn,
if we accept that he rejects genocide, then we must similarly explain his ruthless disregard for human life as evidenced in 2 scenes: i.) when he callously killed a scientist at Project Purity to intimidate James into giving up Project Purity, and during the the player's capture at Raven Rock, if he should so choose to give up the password, Col. Autumn will thank him with a bullet in his head. If the script had given him a backstory to explain his misguided patriotism and his merciless efficiency in sacrificing the little lives for his ideals, he would have been a much better antagonist.

Another villain that poppped up during the main quest, specifically "Tranquility Lane's"
Stanislaus Braun is also lacking a motive for his psychopathic treatment of Vault 112's residents. While it is easy to stereotype him as a mad genius who decides to play god with the people whom he deemed to be in his debt, we're not given any insights on why he didn't use his proclivities to help humanity (I will contrast him with James in the next paragraph). I am however, rather impressed with the twisted manner in which Braun manipulates the player into doing his evil deeds, and the game's allowance for breaking free of Braun's system. The closure for a good character to kill everyone but keeping Braun alive to face solitude for eternity is poetic justice for his repeated torments of vault 112's residents. As it stands, from a literacy perspective Tranquility Lane will be prime in praises I sing of FO3 for Braun is a character who pursues his deadly intents in artful strides.

As mentioned previously, James was better portrayed as a character. Iit is easy to see that his desire to help humanity regain control of purified water - an essential of life, is tied deeply with Catherine's death and her devotion to Revelation 21:6. From James' actions, we can note his priority is always family first - 20 years ago he left Project Purity because Catherine was pregnant and needed a safe place to stay; he stayed with the player for 19 years to help attain maturity; and when he decided that the player is resourceful enough to gain independence he left to resume Project Purity for the sake of fulfilling his late wife's wishes. Although he did mention something about the noble goal of providing humanity with clean water, I believe this is a secondary priority in accordance to his actions. edit: made a mistake about James conversation with Dr. Li.
From these 2 examples, I can ascertain (I certainly hope I'm not alone in this!) that Beth has indeed improved the quality of writings in its games. That the ending provided a magnet for fan-fiction to explain away the gaps should serve as a warning for complacency. There is much room for improvement, and one can only hope that Beth will continue to strive for excellence by listening to criticism of its products from its fans.

Dogmeat bought it today. Entered downtown DC and stumbled across one hell of a fire fight. Super Mutants, Talon Company and Brotherhood of Steel just blasting the hell out of each other.
I decide to throw my lot in an aid the Brotherhood. While I'm sniping off some mercs Dogmeat decides to get up close and personal with the muties. He dodges two missile explosions and a car going nuclear. I see him drop into a trench with the muties while I'm popping merc heads. I can't see Dogmeat but I can see the muties from the waist up. One Mutie goes down, then another and by the time the third collapses my eyes are on stalks. Then comes the saddest moment in gaming history, Dogmeat leaps out of the trenches just as Mutie Master lets loose with his mini-gun. Dogmeat explodes mid air.

FUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUCK.

As much as it kills me inside I actually didn't reload a save from a minute or two earlier purely because that was one hell of a gaming moment and death.

I can't seem to find the route to Galaxy News Radio thing on the main quest, so I decided to help Moira finish the whole book first. I must've wandered a few hours on downtown only to find raiders and super mutants and nothing else O_o

I'm exploring the
Lincoln museum or whatever the fuck it was called
, the one "outside" of Underworld, and it was full of
Lincoln stuff, including his repeater rifle. What am I supposed to do with all the other stuff, like the Abe action figure
? Any help is appreciated.

You can sell it to a npc in the
head of state quest
. There are specific dialogue options for it.

Also be careful with that quest as it breaks easily and is bugged. Save often on different save files.

If you need some help with that, ShadowsDieAway's faq has 9 Fatman and 71 mini-nuke locations listed.

Where are the 5 Super Behemoths?

I've taken 2 of them out:

1)
At the GNR firefight
2)
At the Evergreen Mills

Where are the other 3?

Also, as a sidekick, I must say that Fawkes is insane after Raven Rock. Talk about walking death. He reminds me of the Terminator from T-1 - in Kyle's flashback inside the human compound - the one where the non-Arnie Terminator pulls out the big laser cannon and proceeds to decimate everything inside the compound.

Also, yes, the game does scale. From my understanding, there are various "areas" that scale different kinds of enemies. I'm still fighting mole rats around Megaton. Inside, and near DC, I'm fighting the same kinds of super mutants I did at level 10 as I am at level 20. Doing the Riley quest now, and mowing through dozens of mutants like nobody's business.

It's worth it as it leads to an achievement quest though you can get the quest without the package.
