The Official Fallout 3 thread of post-apocalyptic proportions!

I just noticed that I started this game only using real time shooting and now 50 hours later I'm only using VATS. I didn't even notice the slight transition over time until just recently when I used VATS to kill a centaur enemy that I haven't seen in hours.

Hit level 20 and took the explorer perk so I can see where everything is. Still got loads to see and do but I'm gonna finish the main story tonight and have a break. Mainly because I have some other games I want to play and this has took up all my gaming time. I'll return and get all the achievements and stuff a little later on down the road.

Oh and I have a super mutant party member as well as dogmeat now and I plan on returning to Paradise Falls and cleansing it with fire.

Slight warning, beating the main quest ends the game. You can't just wander around afterwards, so keep a save before you embark on the final quest.

Is there any end game benefit to collecting the technology for the guys at Fort Independence? I really dont need any stimpaks/ammo/nades/RadX and if theres no ultimate prize Im not gonna bother.

Just got to the Citadel, slowly making my way through this game. Am I free to explore through the rest of the vaults or are there story or side missions associated with each that I should activate first(besides
101, 112 and the GECK one ofcourse
.

Also, am I ever gonna get a chance to break into Mr. Burke's house and his office at Tennpenny tower? I killed him and I don't see a way of me upgrading my lockpick skills to 100 to break in...
I've broken into Burke's house (my lockpick skill is 100). There was nothing special in there if I recall correctly.

The game gives you an autosave before the final confrontation in case you don't know when is the right time to save/forgot about it. At least on the 360 I had that. ^

Vault 112: omg this is amazingly great. Not to mention having a nice clean pristine environment to walk around in after hours of desolate wasteland.

Hi. So I have a question about this game.

I have absolutely, unrefutably, undeniably no idea about what this game is or how it plays or its lineage or anything. All I know is that it's a big popular Xbox 360 game. So please bear that in mind.

My mum has just finished playing Fable 2 and thought it was "bloody brilliant" in her own words. She's already gone and bought the first Fable, but at the rate she finishes these things I doubt it'll last her long. Therefore it is up to me to find her something to play for Christmas, and I saw this was being talked about a lot with very high praise.

Now according to IGN this and Fable 2 are in the same genre (action RPG), but I am worried about the potential differences. How is the fighting handled? Is it like an FPS in some respects or could it be played without so much of a twitch reaction response time? My mum doesn't like Halo and finds it too fast so this is a bit of a concern for me, though I guess my dad can help her play along a bit too. Is there anything else she might not like if she's into games like Fable? (I already explained to her the vastly different settings, so she is fine with that aspect.)

Preferrably - and I know this is going wayyyyy offtopic here - she'd like another Xbox 360 game like Fable to play. I couldn't find a lot of other games like it, so if there are any recommendations for anything like it that would be fantastic.

I think I have encountered another bug. I was doing the Tenpenny Tower quest and
had convinced Tenpenny and the other residents that they should let the ghouls live in the building too. So I went back to Roy to tell him the good news and when I got back from that and exited the metro station I suddenly get a message that Tenpenny is dead (for the You Gotta Shoot 'Em in The Head quest). I haven't even talked to Tenpenny about that Crowley quest.

You can play the game as an FPS, but you may end up spending more ammunition in doing so than in using the VATS system that freezes the action and allows you to queue up targets depending on how many action points are in reserve. The game calculates your hit percentage and effectiveness in the backdrop if you do the FPS route, IIRC, though, making actual shooting skill only part of the equation.

I suppose I would say that Fable 2 is as friendly an action RPG as it tries to be with whimsical humor and a gameplay system that loans itself out as a forgiving experience. It's the kind of game where I caught myself thinking "Oh look! Some bandits to kill!" or "I'll burp my way through this conversation and make everyone love me."

FO3 forces you to scavenge for ammunition, punishes you for going where you were warned not to go with death, all in an irradiated world where people will generally take advantage of you, try to kill you, or eat you alive. It's the kind of game where I had said "Fuck! DEATHCLAW!!!" or can finish conversations with "How about I just blow your head off and take what I want off of your dead body anyway?". Instead of asking for your autograph in Fable 2, the kids from Fallout 3 would likely be more apt to say "Fuck you, then, I don't need your shitty autograph anyway."

It's weird how quickly that played out, but it's not really a glitch. Visit Tenpenny Tower afterwards to see how the new tenants are doing.

Go to tenpenny tower and observe the... cohabitation :lol

Yeah I just got to that last night it blew me away. Felt like I was in pleasantville or some shit, and the good thing is since I did the 'good' quest I got back to neutral karma and I'm no longer evil

speaking of this,
did anyone ever find the bodies? They keep saying they're in the basement storage rooom, but I can't find the basement storage room. I went in a couple underground areas (one off a door in the main lobby, one behind tenpenny tower) but still didn't find these "piles of bodies" that were suddenly appearing in my dialogue options. What gives? I want in dashwood's safe dammit!

Fable and Fallout do not cater to the same RPG style at all. It's like going from grade school to grad school really. I played, and enjoyed Fable, and I have Fable II and have enjoyed what I've played so far there as well, but Fallout, and to an extent Oblivion, have a lot more depth to them, with wide-open game play, and more details to pay attention to.

Yeah, I'm looking at the upcoming releases and while some (particularly PoP) look mighty good, I simply don't see any title dethroning this bloody brilliant game.

Should be my GOTY, avatar changed accordingly. :bow Bethesda

So....how do you go to the Galaxy News Station? I explored for days (literally) but the road was always blocked by the ruins O.o

Yeah you have to follow the pointers on the compass through the metro system.

Getting around the ruins is an arse. I spent a few hours trying to find a way to Vault-tec HQ the other day. Needs a metro overlay or something.

Fable 2 and F3 are very different. In Fable 2 everything was easy and fun. F3 is more about survival and less direct storytelling. Art direction is completely different too.

I would suggest Tales of Vesperia. It's not a western rpg, but it's closer to what your mother might like from the description that you gave.
Similiar to Fable 2:

- Fun, beautiful, and bright environments
- Fast combat(you can join her co-op too)
- good characters and classes to play(fighter, mage, healer, etc..)

The only differences would be that Vesperia has a much longer story and is a bit less open ended on what you can do. You can't own anything or interact with npcs in any significant way.

But yeah, try Tales, it should be cheap to pickup a copy now.

Yes. You will gain some positive karma for it.

I'm on my forth character, an effort to min/max, and I'm still finding locations I've never seen before. The hugeness of the game is beyond belief.

Hey, thanks for the help guys. I guess she won't like the less optimistic tone of the game compared to Fable 2. I'll try Tales of Vesperia instead.

EDIT: Ugghh, that isn't out until next year in Europe. I'll look for some DS games instead. Thanks for your time anyway, everyone.

http://blog.wired.com/games/2008/11/japanese-fallou.html

Fallout 3 is coming to Japan on December 4, but with a few changes that aren't so surprising.

The biggest change involves the elimination of the "Power of the Atom" side-quest, about a nuclear bomb in the middle of a town, with players having the option to detonate the device or not. Also removed is Mr. Burke, an NPC who invites the player to detonate the town.

First the LBP music recall and now this? When did game publishers become the PC police?

Japan is a country that created Godzilla in response to Hiroshima and Nagasaki, made Neo-Tokyo E.X.P.L.O.D.E. in Akira, and used the nuclear or nuclear-like annihilation of Tokyo as the backstory for countless anime. Bethesda needs to treat its Japanese audience as adults who've been dealing with their nuclear experience in their own pop-culture for decades, instead of as little children who will cry at any mention of nukes.

I live in the Washington, DC suburbs and you don't see Bethesda worrying that I'll be upset over seeing my own neighborhood depicted in a post-nuclear holocaust, nor should it. Bethesda didn't remove all references to Washington and Washington landmarks after some offended guy wrote to the Post about it, so why is it worried about the few Japanese who will be upset that you can choose to detonate a nuke (as a blatantly evil action) in a world that's already been nuked to hell? Did the Japanese release of Terminator 3 have an alternate ending where the Terminator saves the day while yelling "Yosh!"?

Awesome. They are going down.

Maybe my priorities are all messed up but after finally playing gears 2 yesterday all I could think of while playing it is how I wanted to go back to F3 and finish that ant subway quest( I did).

I'm down to 3 bullets for my sniper rifle. is there a shop or person that sells ammo for this weapon?

That would have been the better ending, actually.

It's a difficult topic, though.

WJy are energy weapons so underpowered overall? I dont feel they pack enough oomph.

That said, there are too many side things to do, in a good way. I never do the main quests because I run into a building a sewer or some other side quest all the time... and they all seem relatively different.

I did find the coke lover guy. He was creepy.

REally, who cares? Is their lost. They should buy the superior asian version, but after all how much are they expecting it to sell on japan?

Bullshit!

Basically its me dream that one devs will do really random events in games. Top of my list is seeing a
flying disc/saucer fly down with some weird humanoids getting out and looking around then flying off
. In a game like Fallout 3 it would be fucking perfect.

So really saw a crashed saucer-shaped craft?
. Where? I must see this immediately!

Really man, I bullshit you not. Finding the antenna swtiching it and hearing some strange sounds was already awesome.
Following the strecgh of the signal until I saw the "thing" was priceless. Never thougth of seeing it in this game, but man it's so perfect...so awesome.

Moria usually has a few bullets, but the generally are found in small clumps at first, though I have about 160 now.

Ok, got a problem.

In the quest Big Trouble in Big Town, I started rescuing
Red
.. but then it said that he/she (can't remember) was fleeing, so I mezzed them and sent them packing to the
Slave Yard

Obvious problem, can't complete the first quest :( any ideas?

I'm thinking of killing all the ghouls in Tenpenny tower for what they did.
I'm not sure if I'll do it because it will mess up my good karma. I think I'll just kill them all and reload an older save.

Well lol, no you can't complete the quest I think. You might be able to lie to one of the people in Big Town though

Yeah i gotta agree I feel that the only energy weapon that packs a good punch is the plasma rifle which i do love probably one of my favorite guns

This happened to me. I
killed the female ghoul (or rather, Charon did) b/c she went to attack me after I opened up the safe in 'her' shop.
I did not lose Karma.

Good to hear that you didn't get penalized for killing her. I think I'll do that too.

Was it a random event like in the original? Fuzzy painting of elvis as well?

I'll have a go at finding it in my next play through.

I almost had a Witcher vibe there when that happened and felt like I wanted to do the same thing.
Especially if you go through the trouble of befriending everyone to get the ghouls in, like Dash, star of that radio adventure show with his ghoul manservant. I'm kind of surprised that Roy managed to take out local security after I had obliterated all of the ferals in the subway.

Not random like in the old FO2, it's a set location in the game that you can find.
It's somewhere in the center of the map, slightly to the north above the river. If you've found the Greenfields(sp?) Waste Site, just quick travel to it and go west from the fence entrance north of the garage building. You'll pick up the radio signal and see a blown up house where it smashed through, the ship, alien, and the most powerful handgun in the game. Enjoy!

No, they aren't messed up. I am having the same problem. The Gears 2 single player campaign is awesome, make no mistake, but after about an hour into it the other night I ended up saving and putting Fallout 3 back in because I kept thinking I needed to finish the android quest that I was in the middle of.

My GOTY as well, no doubt about it.

Looking at this thread makes me realize how little of this game I've seen.

Of course, I remember all the excitement in the Mass Effect thread about space monkeys, but I never saw them...

You didn't see the space monkeys in ME? Best part of the game IMO

Seems like just wandering into places in Fallout is useless. I just spent 15 minutes at RobCo company only to find a switch that I couldn't activate. I'm sure there's a small sidequest related to this but since I don't know where that is, it's useless.
