The Official Fallout 3 thread of post-apocalyptic proportions!

With speech and repair jacked up, you can get around 1000 caps really easily by convincing Simms to pay you more for the defusing, as well as fixing the leaky pipes.

Money is all but useless in the game, but if you guys are having trouble I would suggest you do the Rielly's Rangers side quest.

1. it's a fun quest
2. there's a ton of ammo and stimpaks along the way. 300-500 ammo of every caliber.
3. depending on how many hours into the game you are when you complete the quest, you can get about 1000 caps extra and a choice of the best non powered armor in the game or a special minigun.

So, I finally got around to beating the game, and wow was the end worse than I was expecting. Crappy from both a lack-of-choice standpoint and a stupid execution standpoint.
I had enough RadX and RadAway on me to cure half the Capital Wasteland; there is no reason I couldn't have been popping that stuff to survive. Also, Fawkes is kind of a dick. Wouldn't go in to the radiation area for me, but more than happy to follow me in and then just stand there as I died.

Also lame: Railway Rifle + VATS = Bugged for me. Twice I tried using the Railway Rifle, and both times the second time I took it in to VATS it stuttered, then froze my console.

Still, I did get like a good sixty hours out of the game, and will eventually go back for a pure evil run-through, so it was totally worth it.

Have you tried to enter Vault 87 overland? All the Rad-X and Radaway in the world won't save you from a massive dose of radiation.

I really enjoyed Fallout 3 but I wonder what the chances are of Bethesda attempting to create a classic Fallout when 4 rolls around. Probably pretty low since it won't be PC exclusive I guess :(

Yeah holy crap. I though I'd get like 5 caps a place, but she gave me 1500 out of nowhere :lol

Yeah when I first got the Geomapper Module she gave me 2510 caps, putting me over the 10000 cap mark :D

Then I blew 7100 caps on my Megaton house because I couldn't think of anything else to spend it on :lol

Hmm, I guess I should. Nothing else to do with 9k caps, hopefully she isn't dead.
Use my 70 nuka colas as well :lol

72 hours now. I think maybe I'm 60% of the way done the main quest and have no desire to finish it anytime soon. I'm still finding new things and places wherever I may roam (WHEREVER I MAY WANDEEEEEERRRRR), so if I happen to be in the right place, I'll do that task.

Ugh, a few days ago I was on the final mission of the game but the game froze during vats right as I was
climbing the ramp to enter the building, while fighting the enclave soldiers
. =(

Oooooh, so THAT'S what it was... I saw a warning sign, ignored it, and my radiation meter started to rise... "+1... +4... +10... +80... +300... +480"

"OH SHI-"

Why would they want to? Fallout 3 has sold many millions of copies, it's a huge success. The next one will be exactly the same kind of game.

well there is one thing better than 70 nuka colas. 70
ice cold
nuka colas. :D

55 hours in, I'm starting to get bored. I'm going to just run through the main quest now to get my achievements and see the end.

That's exactly what I'm worried about. I had fun with Fallout 3 but I'd have enjoyed a classic Fallout much more. Maybe they'll make a DS game... :(

Yeah, I'm getting Morrowing syndrom again. Spent so much time on just exploring and doing other stuff that I'm done with the game before even being halfway into the main story

I didn't need it. Was sort of annoyed because my skill was at 100. :( But it was the first and only one I found :P
Yeah, I haven't bothered putting any points into energy weapons, but after I saw the gatlin laser for the first time, I instantly regretted that decision. Unfortunately, I missed out on that bobblehead so I guess it'll have to wait for my next play through the game.

I finished the main quest tonight and was extremely disappointed. While the
giant robot battle
leading up to the final room was pure eyecandy, the ending itself was almost comically abrupt and felt incredibly cheap. I'd have to say that Bethesda put much more effort into Oblivion's main quest than in this one, which is a real shame.

Still, I have almost an entire world left to explore, and those random quests and chance encounters are what make Fallout such an excellent experience.

Yeah I just completed this quest and i was wondering if I did something wrong. Basically I managed to get all 3 rangers out of the hotel safely however when I returned to their headquarters, butch was no where to be seen. Is he dead?

Its not a huge problem though as like others have said, the amount loot you get here is awesome.

My little fellow friend Dogmeat had died ;_;..it used to follow me everywhere but when i fast travel to somewhere else it didn't arrive with me then i got a screen msg saying DOGMEAD DIED!!! :( i miss him..

Fucking buggy POS game, Dogmeat has disappeared. I had him waiting in my Megaton crib, and after doing one of the main quests, when I returned I noticed he has vanished! For fuck sake.

You'll get a note in a couple of hours telling you he's back at his waiting point (Dogmeat's is outside Vault 101 on the little ridge with the tree and 'scenic overlook' sign). At a couple of points in the main quest, whatever companion you had goes walkabout and after a couple of hours will turn up at their waiting point.

Eh, Dogmeat sucked anyway. He died after like 5 minutes for me, and those 5 minutes were a horrible experience of having to constantly look behind me to see that he wasn't stuck on some pebble.

Ah okay, great to know. Thanks.

I just beat the game. I did get bored about half way through and decided I needed to do the main missions or else I wouldn't finish the game. At the half way point I had already leveled up to level 20 so it was kind of pointless to do any other side missions.

And why the hell wouldn't Fawkes go into the chamber at the end of the game? He could obviously handle the level of radiation. He did get the GECK thing for me and the radiation was pretty high in there. What a scumbag!

So lets say all reviewers score this game a 10 (most of them do anyway), just like GTA4, will i like it?

Note: I did not like GTA4!

I'm 37 hours into the game. I've finished the main quest line and I've explored quite a bit... Fallout 3 is starting to bore me, I'm getting brown/grey/weapon/shooting fatigue :(

I need to buy a game with more colors to cleanse my pallet.

Where do I need to go on my PIP to repair weapons?

Hover over the weapon you want to repair in the Items menu, and press R (on PC) or, I dunno (on PS3). The upper right corner of the Pip-Boy screen should tell you what button you have to press to open the repair menu.

The original devs are working on a Fallout MMORPG, maybe it'll return to the old formula.

Can someone plz tell me whee the Defender City is? I got 8 fingers for nothing. I used to be evil but now Im good, could that be an issue? I used to kill defenders.

Is there a way to get both a Megaton house and a Tenpenny tower apartment?
no for console, but yes for pc (it's a "cheat" though ) , what version do you have?

pc "cheat" http://www.bethsoft.com/bgsforums/index.php?showtopic=907040

So you want both houses, well thanks to the cheat / debug console you can.

Stated aim of this is to get both houses and by this keep megaton's nuke unexploded. This is by the way the most rewarding way to do it, it's possible to be more efficiant and cut corners but then you get (much) less.

0) Talk to the sherif/mayor (Simms) of Megaton and offer to disarm the the nuke.
1) Talk to Burke and accept his offer to rig the nuke.
2) Disarm the nuke
4) Talk to Simms (Get House Key + discount etc)
5) Open the console (key on the left side of '1' key on the main keyboard (not numpad)) and type

CODE
player.SetStage 14E9E 200

Press enter some stuff will display on screen then enter:

CODE
player.StartQuest 7B234
and close the console by pressing the key left to '1'

Now you will have the house in megaton and it will not dissepear AND a suit / appartment in Tenpenny Tower

Enjoy

Important note: any upgrade / theme you buy for one house is automatcally applied to both houses, so you can't have one whit a "Raider" theme and an other whit a "Vault" theme Both will always use the same theme.
Also please note this only works for PC games and unless Bethesda patches the game will never work for XBox 360 or Playstation 3 so don't ask.

If I were to buy this game off Steam, would I be able to use it the same way I can use all my Steam games? Meaning, if I transfer computers/got a new computer, would it "follow" me like the games usually do? Valve is really good about that.

I'm wondering if the situation is different because it's a Games for Windows title...

Just finished the game.

It's better than Oblivion certainly, and I did enjoy it on some level, but at the same time it's a piss-poor Fallout sequel. The plot is terrible, with lots of massive holes and logical problems. For example,
why the fuck doesn't Fawkes, who is immune to radiation, just input the Project Purity code at the end of the game? And how the hell did the survivors of that vault flooded with hallucinogenic drugs survive and reproduce for 200 years?
The ending is a joke. Fallout 3 had its moments, like Tranqulity Lane and meeting President Eden, but most of it is drivel.

The leveling system is busted. Because skills cap so quickly and there's such an overabundance of stat-boosting bobbleheads, books, and apparel, no matter what kind of character build you started out with, by end game, the only meaningful difference between one character and the next is their karma. Whereas before, whether you chose to play as a thief, smooth talker, gunslinger, or scientist would dramatically affect the play experience from start to finish, here it doesn't affect much at all.

Beyond that, Bethesda neglected other aspects of role playing besides dungeon crawling and combat. I remember the multitude of quests you could do in previous Fallout games using skills like speech, science, repair, etc. Megaton gave me hope that Fallout 3 would be like that, with quests like helping a guy kick his addiction to jet, but once you leave Megaton every quest is go to a dungeon and kill shit. You can forget about using skills like Speech and Science to get through the game here.

There's a non-cheating way too, but it might depend on how you solve the Ghoul situation. I helped the ghouls overrun the tower, and after Mr. Tenpenny was dead and the smoke had cleared, I went back to Tenpenny Tower to the empty suite, and although it was still locked on the front, you can go out on the balcony from Mr. Tenpenny's old suite and walk around the outside of the tower and enter the empty suite from the back. The back down is unlocked, and you get all the benefits of owning the room, like the "Well Rested" bonus, your themes, your robot butler, and your bobblehead storage.

I ran across a wastelander last night while I was out exploring and he brought up the Wasteland survival guide.. :D Apparently I'm the reason his family is up to two meals a day!

All the wastelanders that bought my survival guide seem to be corpses. :lol

Anyone else have Rivet city citizens just wandering around outside? I've seen like 4-5 now just wandering around in the general area. One was fighting some super mutants and surely would have died had I not intervened. I know the megaton people will sometimes wander off but this is the first i've heard of Rivet City people doing it.....

I ran into a bug a while ago where no matter what I would do, if I tried to load from a certain save, the game would just hang. I had to go back and lose a ton of progress because of this shitty bug. I sure hope it gets fixed.

ok, I'm about 70 hours in now, and I know I'm getting near the "story" ending. I just started the quest "american dream" or whatever where I have been
taken to the enclave headquarters or whatever after retrieving the GECK
. Now.... I know I am close to the "point of no return" so to speak, but I need some clarification...

can I
get out of this building without going to see the president, or is that necessary?

and is it already too late for me to continue my exploration? I still haven't seen the entire NW corner of the map and I don't want this to end yet. Please help...

You've still got a bit left to play and you aren't at the "point of no return room". You do have to
speak to the president
. But after that you can go on exploring. The real point of no return is a LITTLE more obvious. You should know it when you see at this point.
