The Official Fallout 3 thread of post-apocalyptic proportions!

72 hours now. I think maybe I'm 60% of the way done the main quest and have no desire to finish it anytime soon. I'm still finding new things and places wherever I may roam (WHEREVER I MAY WANDEEEEEERRRRR), so if I happen to be in the right place, I'll do that task.

I suppose to each his own. I put 45 hours in doing the main quest and just about all of the side quests, and have explored what I feel is most of the wasteland. Occasionally I pop it in for half an hour or so and find a new side area, but it's getting to "you see one dilapidated shack, you see 'em all". Not a bad game by any stretch of the means, but I don't really feel the urge to wander and explore. Tried to jump in the other day and replay it, but the charm sort of wore off when I got to Megaton and out into the real game. Maybe I'm just more in the mood for a linear experience after having put so much time into Fallout 3.

Well I finally caved and ordered the game. I'm really not sure whether I'll like it, but sometimes you just have to just take a leap of faith.

So can anyone tell me what happens if you
let the Family live in truce with Arefu in the Blood Ties quest? I decided to kill every single member in their "coven" after setting up the truce since I couldn't just let freaks like that live. Plus I wanted Vance's shiskebob sword.
:D

Yup, me and
Charon
are having fun being almost all-out evil.

I am looking to buy fallout 3 but would really appreciate some impartial advice to which version is the best.
I have seen the PS3 beetle, hair and rock textures looking better pictures. But I feel these may come at a price.
I am not interested in the exclusive 360 DL but would just like to own the better version.
Sorry for this question as I know these type of questions usually start a fanboy war but £40 is alot of money these days and I just want it to be spent on the better version.
Thanks again to all help and replies and please be honest.

What did you guys do with Gallus, the ghoul living in the sewage tunnels
near grayditch?

He has the coolest looking room, a really extensive coca cola collection,
and even has two pet roaches!! When I approached him he killed me.
Is there any way to be civil with him? I'd hate to kill him, he has such a nice place!

That's exactly what I'm worried about. I had fun with Fallout 3 but I'd have enjoyed a classic Fallout much more. Maybe they'll make a DS game... :(
I don't know I think people are looking at the old Fallouts with rose tinted glasses, sure they were great game, but I feel like Fallout 3 does a lot better than those games except for maybe humor, character balance, and the moral consequences. The biggest flaw of Fallout 3 was the ending, I remember Bethesda promising that there would be hundreds of different endings, but after seeing it for myself and finding out just how generic it was I don't see how thats possible.

For most games I would just say they are about even, but most reviewers have pointed out that the 360 version loads slightly faster and has a more consistent framerate...I'd get the 360 version if I had both, but hey I'm not going to lie to you I'd get the 360 version regardless unless the game required constant use of the dpad.

I'd like to know this as well. When I ran into him he was wearing a party hat and was celebrating his birthday. I hated killing him.

There are several possible outcomes. I'm playing a mega goodie-two-shoes, so the one that happened to me was:

I convinced Lucy's brother to leave the Family and live at home while at the same time I persuaded the leader using my Speech skill to offer a deal. The Family will now protect the citizens of Arefu in exchange for blood donations from them. Everyone wins.

Yeah I heard the 360 version is a bit sharper all the way around. I'm also quite suprised at how quickly it loads. Oblivion on the 360 was rather slow.

Plus
if Vance likes you he gives you Shiskabob schematics!

Nothing major happens.
You can convince them to stop killing the people of Arefu, release that West guy and that's it. I think Vance will give you the shishkebab schematic if you end the quest this way.

Out of the 360/PS3 versions, the 360 gets the slight nod. Both games have the same bugs, but the 360 loads a little faster. I dont think you will be disappointed no matter which one you get, unless you dont like the game in general.

Ah, perfect then. I ended up doing exactly that but offed them all anyway and got his weapon the easy way. Guess my evil nature kept him from offering it to me even after making life good for both sides.

Shit man, those are basically all the reasons people loved the first two so much.

I picked this up for 360 a this weekend, its not bad. It definitely feels like Oblivion - level scaling + post-apocalyptic setting + better character progression = Fallout 3. But I can live with that, since there is such a huge lack of any good western style RPGs. I probably would've passed if it wasn't for the fact that my girlfriend absolutely loved the open ended experience of Fable II and wants to get into the more free form RPGs more.

I think Bethesda could've done a lot of things better. For starters, just because its a post-apocalyptic wasteland doesn't mean everything needs to be drab. I'm not talking about the color palette as much as the effects on the materials themselves. If cars are old and rusty give the rust some real gritty detail. If there is a pool of strongly radioactive water or residue make it really look like it. Stuff like that. I know its mostly an engine problem, but that is a design problem because they went with an engine that worked pretty well for a bright, forested world like in Oblivion and didn't add enough to it to make Fallout 3 visually impressive.

Two, the world should've been spaced out more with a vehicle of some sort added in. I know, rather ambitious, but it'd serve with the aesthetic much better if you ask me.

Overall I give it a C+ to a B-. Not bad, definitely not on par with Fallout 1 and 2, but since no one really makes games like that anymore I'll take what I can get. I'll be sitting the gf down in a day or two and watching Mad Max and The Road Warrior though to get her fired up for the game. If she really likes it then I'll set up Fallout 1 & 2 on her mac as well.

It's really amazing at how many different kinds of outcomes and completely random shit that happens in the game's world. I was talking to my boss and a few guys at work the other day, and they were talking about totally different things that happened in their game than what happened in mine in regards to quests and characters. Simply incredible.

Holy crap...Vault 106 spoilers:
I'm playing through a second time evil. I'm not sure if this had an effect, but while I was in Vault 101 I killed Butch. While going through Vault 106, the screen would go blue and I'd see people temporarily then they'd disappear. In one room when I was fighting one of the survivors, the screen went blue, then Butch and his gang started attack me. When I shot at him the screen turned back to normal. Creepy and awesome.

Nah your alignment doesn't affect what happens there.

Anyone here happen to have any good pics of the Collector's Edition Strategy Guide? I have absolutely no use for it but it looks really awesome :lol

Pics of the inside would be good.

I already have 40hrs into the game, I fucking love this game. Right now in the story I am at
The Enclave attacks the Water Facility plant and your dad dies. Basically in the brother hood of steel. Crazy thing is I am lvl 19 already shit, Now I can finally use the fucking Power Armor! I was always wondering when I would get to use it.
My favorite mission so far has to be retrieving the Declaration of Independence for the Dude in Rivet city.
Love the robot at the end and his wig, especially all the stuff he was saying in the loudspeaker. I let him live and made a forgery but hey I got his wig from the dresser!
:D :D

The collector's edition is well worth the twenty bucks. The map of the wasteland that comes with the guide is poster-board sized. Good luck getting lost with that baby plastered across your wall. :lol

when can I wear that cool looking armor like in the cover? I got one from looting the brotherhood of steel after fighting a super big supermutant but it said I need perks before I can wear them

How can you repair power armor?
Collect more power armor. Loot Brotherhood of Steel or Enclave corpses.

Later in the main quest, after gaining entrance into
the Citadel.

It's a special/unique perk that you have to train in.

There's a non-cheating way too, but it might depend on how you solve the Ghoul situation. I helped the ghouls overrun the tower, and after Mr. Tenpenny was dead and the smoke had cleared, I went back to Tenpenny Tower to the empty suite, and although it was still locked on the front, you can go out on the balcony from Mr. Tenpenny's old suite and walk around the outside of the tower and enter the empty suite from the back. The back down is unlocked, and you get all the benefits of owning the room, like the "Well Rested" bonus, your themes, your robot butler, and your bobblehead storage.
:O I didn't know that was possible, that's cool, thanks!

I got it and love it but i do have one small gripe. The words begin deep inside the binding so you really have to pry it open if you want to read some parts.

started the game today and i can tell i will love it. coming across money early in the game is very hard though. im
trying to blow up megaton
and i dont even have any money to buy medicine for my trip to penny tower or whatever and the bitch at the supply store has run out of bullets:lol .

should i go ahead with
blowing up megaton
so early in the game or should i jus leave it alone?

Pretty much ruined my opinion of the game, that did. Absolutely no need to restrict it.

I mean if the game continued after you beat it the wasteland would be completely different. The game creates a save once you beat it so you can go back and not beat it, works fine.

Question:

Are there any stats that, if increased, will make you run faster? It's soooooooooo slow running around the map and stuff.

Yes, I know you can quickjump to different areas...

I don't think there is any, but if you holster your handgun and put on light clothes you will move faster.

My character is 14th Level now and fully in charge of her own shit. Gamma Judy has got lots of special weapons, ammo, and good armour. She's been playing a very good person but the time has come to wipe out a whole encampment.
Paradise Falls.

She's done recon, evacuated those who shouldn't be in there, and is poised to execute every single slaver inside. Can't wait for my next session!

Editor and DLC dated:

G.E.C.K. Software Development Kit arrives next month, with three pieces of substantial downloadable content following between January and March 2009:

Bethesda Softworks, a ZeniMax Media company, today announced plans to make both its editor and downloadable content available for its award-winning game, Fallout 3 in the coming weeks. The official editor for Fallout 3, called the G.E.C.K. (Garden of Eden Creation Kit), will be available for free download in December and will allow Games for Windows users to create and add their own content to the game. In addition, the first official downloadable content, Operation: Anchorage, will be available exclusively for the Xbox 360 video game and entertainment system from Microsoft and Games for Windows in January, and more downloadable content coming in February and March.
“We’ve always seen the original world of Fallout 3 as a foundation for even more content. Some created by us, and a lot more created by users,” said Todd Howard, game director for Fallout 3. “It’s fun to create your own character, but it can be equally fun to create your own adventures. We can’t wait to see what the community does with the G.E.C.K.”

The release of the G.E.C.K. provides the community with tools that will allow players to expand the game any way they wish. Users can create, modify, and edit any data for use with Fallout 3, from building landscapes, towns, and locations to writing dialogue, creating characters, weapons, creatures, and more.

Three downloadable content packs will be coming to Xbox 360 and Games for Windows Live starting in January that will add new quests, items, and content to Fallout 3.

Operation: Anchorage: Enter a military simulation and fight in one of the greatest battles of the Fallout universe – the liberation of Anchorage, Alaska from its Chinese Communist invaders. An action-packed battle scheduled for release in January.

The Pitt: Journey to the industrial raider town called The Pitt, located in the remains of Pittsburgh. Choose your side. Scheduled for release in February.

Broken Steel: Join the ranks of the Brotherhood of Steel and rid the Capital Wasteland of the Enclave remnants once and for all. Continues the adventure past the main quest. Scheduled for release in March.

Hmmm interesting...seems like with the DLC they are also selling (End game spoilers)
the ability to play after the end of the game

Definitely want. Wonder how big Anchorage and Pittsburgh will be.

So the DLC will be scenarios rather than added content to the gameworld? Im slightly confused I wonder if I can import my character would seem a bit odd if I did lol.

Edit: Sorry didn't really read it properly looks like the first one will be a simulation the other two are more added content. Nice!

Suuweeet. Can't wait, need to finish out my game. 52 hours in, but I got lots to do.

But yeah I only use the Enclave power armor now, I got my DR up to 31 just by repairing it when I loot Enclave soldiers. The gatling laser always tears them up.

i'm going to be very, very upset if this DLC doesn't make it to the PS3 eventually. Very, very upset indeed.

I have it on PC so it doesnt effect me, but I have friends who have it on PS3. I think its pretty crappy they dont get DLC just because they bought the game on PS3, its pretty shitty to exclude your fans/customers because they only own one system. Restricting content on a multiplatform game is just messed up.

Tell them to complain about it then, I have it for the PS3 and wouldn't buy DLC anyways (I refuse to buy DLC, if it should be in the game put it in the fucking game don't charge later >.<)
