The Official Fallout 3 thread of post-apocalyptic proportions!

Ok...I'm like 10 hours in and I have yet to find a bobblehead...are they even useful?
It's not like I've been looking for them, are they well hidden?

Yes, they are immensely useful (permamently gives you stat bonuses, pretty big ones), and they are pretty damn hidden at remote locations.

Just finished the main quest, and started the game over again.
First time replaying a game doesn't feel like work. going to explore a whole lot more.
Also, I have no idea how to build weapons. halp?

You can buy/find/receive "schematics" for custom weapons. For instance, Railway Rifle from a certain quest. Also, if you find multiple schematics, they improve the weapons' damage and condition. Your repair skill also effects this. They stay with you as notes that show you what you have to collect in order to create one. Then, find a work bench (Moira's shop or your own, also scattered around) and build it.

Pretty decent ones, Bottlecap Mines are disgustingly awesome.

Yep. I cringe every time I have to go through most RPG intros, but Fallout 3 does it so damned well that within fifteen minutes you can be out of Vault 101 and on your way.

The game also creates a named save just before you exit the vault. You can load that & then change aspects of your character just before you exit, instead of going through the entire chargen process again (bearing in mind that the save will only include whatever inventory items you happened to pick up leading up to that point previously).

So far I'm around 43 hours in. Level 11, haven't touched the main quest.
Finally finished Moria's Survival guide a couple of days ago too.

I'd have to say that the best quest is little trouble in big town, so far. Stumbled in to Big Town on my way to another town for the Blood Ties quest, and started to help them. Well first I stole everything they had, and then I helped them. The Cop facility where you needed to go was small compared to other buildings, but the best part was making sure everyone made the trip back to town safely. It was nighttime in my game and we snuck all the way back, around enemies, and it felt so satisfying. It really felt like we were fleeing in the middle of the night. Later that night I read in the guide that I could have just ported over to the town and saved myself the trouble lol.

Oh and the sniper rifle breaks down too fast and enemies don't carry it enough for me to do a self repair.

Got my final bobblehead today. The achievements I don't think I'll get are the neutral/evil ones and the data miner. Hats off the Bethesda, they really nailed this game. The DLC sounds exciting but I hope they raise that level cap. 20 is fine and all but you gain xp far too quickly. I'm rather attatched to my character but miss all the levelling.

Oh and I hope Bethesda remain true to form and do a full on proper expansion.

I'm level 13 at 20 hours in. Just different strokes for different folks. Amazing game though. Sad I let it sit for so long since release.

I purposely started slowing down on leveling around lvl 16 or so. Just didn't want it to end!

I do agree you earn XP a little to quickly, but maybe they felt it was better to error on the side of to much XP rather than take a chance of making it a long grind and backlash in the reviews. That lvl 21 bar on the load screen really is a cock tease though. They'd better raise it up eventually!

I'm getting so fucking sick and tired of developers not fucking fixing bugs from their previous games.

Fallout 3 is locking up all the fucking time just like Oblivion did. Now I remember why I never finished that game. It bored the fuck out of me and crashed so much it wasn't worth finishing.

Fallout 3 is a much better game but it locks up constantly on me. I have to save all the fucking time and it totally ruins the experience. Instead of enjoying the last half of the game, I'm just paranoid saving every 10 minutes.

I've tried the HDD system maintenance thing (XX LB RB XX) many many many fucking times, even deleted the HDD install of Fallout 3 and reinstalled. I tried even deleting a lot of save games. Made absolutely no difference.

Bottom, line Fallout 3 is another buggy piece of shit Beta Test I've paid for. (yeah, fuck you too, Epic.)

You get a 10% experience bonus if you are well rested. If you finished the game, are just exploring, getting the level 40 cap can be worth it, just to have a goal

I felt like a pussy but I fast travelled. I started off really evil and nuked megaton, but now I'm good again. It's been a great ride so far, main reason I stay good now is to keep
star paladin cross, the brotherhood of steel chick...to stay with me. went back to neutral and she started telling me that my actions were disturbing or something

For some reason Cross died on me. she was going fine for about an hours worth of play, then all of a sudden she wasn't healing anymore. Was sneaking around in the metro tunnels with her while she had one bar of life left, then she got hit by a bear trap and that was that.

doesn't matter though because now I have Fawkes, who is fantastic.

Maybe I play it slow but I'm at 70 hours and I've not done much of the main quest. My current main quest chapter is called
Scientific Pursuits
. Only yesterday did I discover the Citidel but I didn't go inside. I have other side-quests and locations to search before I go into a place that big.

Where do you get him?

She died on me in that same area, she was killed by 3 mirelurks. 2 king and 1 regular.

For some reason they all attacked her and not me, but I loaded the save. When Dogmeat died I didnt care but she's been a big help so far.

I'm pretty wealthy now, anyone got those themes for their crib?

Maybe time for a new Xbox? That doesn't seem to be the general experience with either Fallout or Gears.

What I miss from Oblivion is the backpedaling of dialogue boxes. You now always have to choose the correct exit line to exit a conversation.
Plus, not even all the available answer options are in the box so you have to scroll around for a clear overview.

I've done a full trip of the wasteland last night, and it finally feels like I've beaten the game... even though I haven't touched the main quest yet. Got to level 15 just doing that.
If I finish the main quest now I might hit 20 at the end... it's like the game was meant to be played like that.
On the other hand, if I cracked more computers than I slaughtered deathclaws I'd probably have hit level 20 ages ago.

is there any way to get into the citadel without doing the main quest?
They wouldn't let me in the first time I passed by there.

As for themes, The science and love themes have a skill book, so it's worth getting those if you're collecting them. Science theme is really bulky but I kept the love theme. Just a bunch of christmas lights but you get some sexy time lamps on the ceiling that are worth keeping. The coca cola machine looks nice too.

main quest spoilers
save him in Vault 87, have him get the GECK for you, then he'll be outside killing everything in his path when you leave Raven Rock

i've tried both the science and love machine themes. love machine is the better of the two.

Cross died on me almost immediately in the National Archives, bitch got freakin' dusted to ash. Got her kickass gun though.

Fawkes is the best partner ever.

Yeah, that's probably your Xbox. I did have about 5 lockups in my 85 hours of playing, but I can live with that. Two were Railway Gun related and that's a known glitch. Oblivion only locked up about 3 times in my 150 hours of playing so that's pretty good.

Time to get a new Xbox dude.

Gears doesn't lock up, the Matchmaking system is a steaming pile of shit.
Horde and the awesome co-op campaign save it.

So far, only Fallout 3 locks up all the time.

No RROD so far. I'd be on my 5th 360 then. <sigh>

I just made a new character, and the FIRST thing I did after leaving the Vault was getting 1000 caps in Megaton (took like 15 minutes), made sure I had evil karma, and hired Jericho. I figured with him by my side, I will level up much slower because he will be splitting kills with me. It'd be even better if I manage to trek into downtown DC to get
Charon

I've logged about 19 hours so far and I'm currently a few dead raiders away from hitting level 9. I've also yet to do a single main quest since leaving the vault. Bethesda fixed my only complaint with Oblivion, which was with exploration. Not very long into Oblivion exploration ceased to be necessary or really all that fun--and that had to with several things: The diversity of the world, scaled items, the low number of rare items to search for, etc etc. There wasn't one fuckin Ayleid Ruin that after spending 45 minutes working my way through it and backtracking my way out of it, that I emerged with anything of value or the feeling that I hadn't just wasted my time. Fallout 3 doesn't suffer from this, but even if it did I would still be inclined to explore simply due to how well the world is crafted and how every location sort of tells it's own story(the elementary school is a perfect example of this). Visual narrative aside, there's just tons cool shit out there to find. It also helps that the combat is far more fun than combat should be in a western RPG.

The amount of random happenings is the icing. From the impromptu Brotherhood vs Super Mutant shootout which saw one of the brotherhood soldiers accidently killi himself and one comrade with a poorly placed mini nuke blast, to the unlucky Raider who got ripped apart by a pack of Feral Ghouls I've seen plenty of crazy unscripted things happening wandering through the wasteland.

It's insane how friggin great this game is. I've only completed 7 sidequest and explored about a fourth of the map, but truth be told I'm already having a hard time not hailing Fallout my GOTY.

I beat the game along with all quests except for Agatha's Song and the Coke Challenge in 40 hours. Got like 4 bobbleheads, but didn't explore the map completely (didn't get the Explorer achievement).
I'm going to start a new file soon to make up for everything I missed on my first, because it's impossible for me to get all bobbleheads, and I drank way too many quantum cokes :P

Regarding the Agatha's Song quest...
I was wandering around and found myself at the Vault were the instrument was. Took some hard battling to get there, too. I had the damn Soil Stradivarius in my inventory for so long and had no idea what it was for. Eventually, I was having a conversation with Azrukhal in the Underworld and he offered 200 caps for it. I decided there was no other use for it and gave it to him. Few game days later I come across this place curiously named "Agatha's House". I was just like...oh shit :lol Well I walked in and talked to her. She told me about the instrument and I told her I'd find it for her. Since I already completed the quest, I had the option to tell her I sold it to Azrukhal. Up until this point she was the sweetest damn NPC in the wasteland, but after telling her she became and epic bitch. I tried to console her, and after that didn't work I blew her head off with my trusty .44 Magnum. One clean shot to the head shut her mouth, permanently. I guess you won't need that shitty instrument any longer, you damn whore!

After I finished the quest, I did the same thing with the weapon she had just given me. :lol

Coming back to this game after the slew of the holiday games I've been playing, I realise that as a level 20 character exploring the wasteland is no where near as fun as it should be. You don't feel powerful, everything still takes a lot of shells to kill. Fuck level scaling. Leave that shit to the story quests Bethesda.

It doesn't have anywhere near the level scaling of Oblivion. I'm Level 20 and kicking ass easily. (well, when the game is not locking up on me.)

Although I don't have it on insane difficulty and I have three Followers, one of which is Dog Meat, but I usually leave him behind as he gets himself killed so easily.

Use spoilers.

Easiest way I did that:
Lay down frag or stronger mines and walk backwards having them walk into mines and blow themselves up. They are big and cumbersome and walk awkwardly and slowly in the narrow corridors. Didn't use one stimpack the whole time.

its not they were hard to kill...I killed them fine, its just a really long quest inside these tight dark corridors...floor after floor after floor of it.

Did anyone else
after rescuing Dad walk all the way from Vault 112 to Rivet City with him? I did, it took us all night and half of the next day, but damn it was some of the most fun I'd had in the game yet! He's invincible so once he runs out of ammo for his 10mm (he only has one clip) he starts punching.... everything. And, he pulls aggro so you can stand off to the side and watch and laugh if you like.

He'll also pick up any weapons he comes across. We ran afoul of raiders and he looted them for their guns. I really liked it because he ran all the way, so I never felt it was a tedious trip.

Cool! Where is that?

I was level 17 when I came to what I'm pretty sure is the last big scene of the main quest. You're given the option to start a battle or 'take a couple minutes' to get ready. I left the quest there and have been doing whatever I want to get to level 20.

Head of State is a cool quest because you meet what is probably the last true remannts of the United States, people with the last spark of the American spirit. It also takes you to the Museum of History so that you may find some genuine American artifacts. That's what my last few levels have been; a tour of Washington D.C. in search of the heart of America. To that end I worked my way to the Capitol Building from the Washington Monument and that is something worth doing if you're high level. Crazy fight and the building within is a decent dungeon.

I love the game so far. I love that you have 20 levels to make your story and see what you can see. I don't have any incentive to play my current character forever. I'm eager to make a new one and take off in a different direction.

I'm maybe 6-10hrs in the game I think(I just got to Galazy Radio Station) and I was wondering about something.
I killed Jericho in the first town, I wanted him to follow me but he thought I was too good for him. I stole some stuff and killed some random peeps than I had the whole city after me :( Jericho took me forever to kill.

Is there a way to get people to forget what you did or something? I kill like 2 ppl and the whole city wants my blood.

Is there a way to use your misc items? I have a bobblehead but didnt know I could use it :\ What do mini-nukes do? Real weapons? Or for sell?

Can you sell your items? Havent found anyone to sell things too. The game looks so fucken better after I came out of that underground railroad area. Wow I couldbt believe the difference. And that mutant behemoth got plowed by my rocket launcher thing. Game is so much fun. I wanna use that bad ass armor those guys @ the Radio station have :(

Wait 3 in game days and everyone will forgive you.

??Question??

Im about 16 hours into the game and it seems like for the past 2hours the game loads really really slow. everything takes an extra 10 secs to load and I have the game preloaded on to my 120gig HD. Is this normal or due to the fact that I have a lot of saves.

Thanks in advance

Doing the Blood Quest mission...

I went to Arefu and talked to the old dude who made me go in the houses looking for the other people. I found the dead ones.

Im now supposed to look for someone named Ian, or the rest of the family, and I cant find them!!!!

Can someone point me in the right direction?

Okay, I knew the PS3 version was buggy, but I think this is too much.

I loaded my last saved game, wanted to fast travel somewhere north, so I can go to Oasis. I fast traveled to the power station, the game hanged at the loading screen. So I loaded and tried again, no dice, still doesn't work.

I loaded and fast traveled to Germatown - the game hangs.

I loaded an older save file and tried to fast travel - the game hangs.

I got pissed and started a new game. Played an hour, got to Megaton, tried to fast travel back to the Vault - the game hangs.

I decided to go to Oasis on foot from Megaton - the game hanged around Big Town. Tried it again, same thing.

WHAT THE HELL, GAF, help me, is there anything else I can do!?

I've had that happen to me, on the 360 version. What I did was travel around on foot for a bit, changing screens and loading other rooms, and by the time I fast traveled again it worked. Annoying as hell, but it's fixable.

I'm at Level 14 and just made it to Rivet City and spoke to Doctor Li. How far am I in the main quest?

Also, before that I finished the quest for Mister Crowley and got the Power Armor (after unlocking the doors first then giving him the keys). It says I don't have the proper training to wear it so I placed it in Charon's inventory and he wore it. I love wearing the Ranger Armor I got from the Reilly's Rangers quest, so I'm hoping the Power Armor will help Charon stay alive longer. Anyone else notice that the condition of whatever armor Charon is wearing does not get damaged? He also seems to have unlimited carrying weight, but I'm not sure. I've placed every weapon I found (and need) including missile launchers and fat mans into Charon's inventory and so far he's carried them all for me. Pretty useful too when you come across a Behemoth or Deathclaw and need the extra firepower without having to carry them yourself! I almost don't need to worry about carrying weight with Charon around.
In other words, Charon is frickin' awesome. :D We're nearly unstoppable!

Fallout 3 is most definitely GOTY in my book.
