The Official Fallout 3 thread of post-apocalyptic proportions!

OK, is my 360 dying, or is this somehow a game glitch?

I was walking around near the old Bethesda Office yesterday, and I got to one portion of the landscape and started getting some awful, awful artifacting. It was the kind where a striped (in this case, black and grey) pattern fills nearly the entire screen. Yet it only happened when I turned south. I was just waiting for the 360 to RROD, but after I moved out of that area, all was well.

Anyone had a similar experience? I'm fully expecting the ring within the next few days...

I've run into it to when I was outside the washington monument, it looked like a spider web of black and green triangles and only happened when I looked back out at the mall.
Looks like its the game and not the 360. Thank god since I just got mine back.

I wouldn't say it's more user-friendly, no. And it's harder, too. Both games are among the best ever made, try the first one again and play more than a few minutes (?).

damn if I knew those quantum colas would be valuable quest objects I would've picked up all of them on the way. Now I have to go to the factory to track down places that have them

Oh sweet, that's good to know.

I knew the veritable junk warehouse that I've turned my
Megaton house
into was going to be good for something. :lol

On an interesting note, I *just* realized yesterday that the "caps" used for currency actually means bottle caps. That was a very big "duh" moment for me. :lol

I've been pondering the weapons and how they work, systems-wise.

There seems to be more going on than just the DMG number. I also seem to get criticals more often with certain weapons. The oh so lovely Railway Rifle, for example, lists damage in the high twenties, a good ten points lower than the Combat Shotgun. And yet the Railway Rifle brings down almost everything I see in two shots, with one of the two usually being a critical. It's become my go-to weapon though the stats don't explain why. The same goes with that Dart Gun. It rocks the leg criticals on a very regular basis but the other body parts, not so much.

Anyone got any insight?

Oh, I also finished my list of junk components worth collecting and the weapons they make. Helpful in separating the good junk and the junk junk.

Fallout 3 Weapon Components

10 Bottle Caps - Bottlecap Mine
Abraxo Cleaner - Nuka-Grenade
Cherry Bomb - Bottlecap Mine
Conductor - Rock-It Launcher
Crutch - Railway Rifle
Deathclaw Hand - Deathclaw Gauntlet
Firehose Nozzle - Rock-It Launcher
Fission Battery - Railway Rifle
Lawnmower Blade - Shishkebab
Leaf Blower - Rock-It Launcher
Leather Belt - Deathclaw Gauntlet
Lunch Box - Bottlecap Mine
Medical Brace - Deathclaw Gauntlet
Motorcycle Handbrake - Shishkebab
Motorcycle Tank - Shishkebab
Nuka-Cola Quantum - Nuka-Grenade
Paint Gun - Dart Gun
Pilot Light - Shishkebab
Pressure Cooker - Railway Rifle
Radscorpion Poison Gland - Dart Gun
Steam Gauge Assembly - Railway Rifle
Sensor Module - Bottlecap Mine
Surgical Tubing - Dart Gun
Tin Can - Nuka-Grenade
Turpentine - Nuka-Grenade
Toy Car - Dart Gun
Vacuum Cleaner - Rock-It Launcher
Wonderglue - Deathclaw Gauntlet

Ahh shit...:lol Shouldn't have sold some of this shit for money...

2 is ridiculously hard (so is 1, but at least you start with a gun). It's not uncommon for people to die in the tutorial dungeon.

:lol I realized that pretty late too, after being annoyed at all the ghouls I was killing dropping these apparently worthless 'bottle caps.' Major facepalm moment, I was about halfway through the main quest at the time.

I couldn't get out and I stopped playing :lol

does anyone know a place that is sure to sell plasma rifles? I want to stack up on them to repair my A3-21, but I they're pretty hard to come by. Haven't found a store yet that sells them. Enclave soldiers mostly use laser rifles.

It's a shame the level cap's 20... I still have 5 sidequests to do and combat feels pretty useless now.

That's it? I'd love to see a mod that raises the cap somehow.

And what do you mean useless, just too boring cause you're too powerful?

I always save after every individual encounter in the Temple of Trials. It takes a while to get through because the spear is so inaccurate. After that, though, the game opens up and it's amazing.

well experience's gone, so the main use for killing baddies is too, now it's just a matter of clearing buildings asap so you can go on exploring. And yeah it's too easy. Maybe I should switch to hard

btw did any of you guys play through vault 106? It was so weird, I kept thinking something was wrong with my 360 or tv. I wanted to know the backstory of that vault but couldn't find any logs.

That's what so amazing about this game, even seemingly insignifant locations can have an entire story attached to them, like vault 92 and its
music experiment

Yeah once you're level twenty the fun of battling people is about as much fun as random encounters.

What do you guys think about the Lawbringer/Contract Killer perks?
If those are the ones where you collect parts off baddies/goodies you kill for a reward, I believe the general consensus was that it wasn't worth it, though I never actually did it myself. Go for Mysterious Stranger instead!

Yeah, I'm reading that you get 10 Caps per finger for Lawbringer. Hmmmm. I'm not really money strapped anyways... I'm at a point where I'm wondering which perk I should grab. I was thinking about Robotics expert but I haven't run into that many robots yet.

This playthrough I've just been dicking around as an evildoer for the most part so I figured contract killer suited me well.

You get like 10 caps per ear you collect.. With the way I'm playing I would be killing these people either way so its a nifty bonus... buttttttt.... pretty much any other perk would have been more useful, if nothing else just using intense training to up one of my stats

Exactly. I think there's a mod that lowers the leveling rate. Besides that, don't get the perk that increases the amount of EXP you gain.

They have never been a problem for me, and I've finished the main quest and about half the named sidequests.

I made the mistake of getting that perk two times this playthrough. Won't happen again

I'm thinking about picking this up, because I hear it is very very similar to Oblivion. Now I did basically hate nearly everything about Oblivion in comparison to Morrowind, but I did enjoy playing as a ranged archer who would just creep around and snipe shit in the head. Can I play this type of character in Fallout? Also, how is the UI handled on the PC? Another console abomination like Oblivion? And if so, it can be modded ja?

http://fallout.wikia.com/wiki/Vault_106

Vault 106 is one of the Vault-Tec Vaults. It is located south-south-east of Arefu and directly south of Kaelyn's Bed & Breakfast. As part of the Vault Experiment, psychoactive drugs were released into the air filtration system 10 days after the door was sealed.

Honestly it's been giving me much more of a Morrowind vibe than Oblivion. It's got that same nitty gritty detail and "omg the worlds so big where do I go?" and depth and hard starting difficulty (notwithstanding the almost godlike state you can achieve in Morrowind).
Yes you can play a sneak character and gain critical hits when you strike someone undetected it's one thing that transferred from Oblivion really well.
I'm playing the 360 version so can't comment on the interface but it is very PC inspired. The Pipboy might seems constrained with a mouse however. But yes there are interface mods out there.

Yeah, I just raised my Luck up by 1. I'm getting ready to get the Cyborg perk so one more level to go.

Oh ok, that's cool then. I was thinking about getting it since there's one robot protecting the Armory in Rivet but I figure I could just use a Stealth boy and loot it without alarming it.

:lol That's awesome. That whole sequence freaked me out. It was done in such a way that it didn't feel like it was part of the game, as if it was glitching out.

yeah I figured as much, but I was disappointed it didn't get the log treatment like 92 did. Fallout Wiki kicks so much ass btw

I'm just going through this now. Holy shit, best reference guide ever.

Man I never appreciated how awesome the sound is in this game.

I'm playing with a decent set of circumaural headphones. Really creepy stuff when you're in ghoul-infested buildings.

Hi.

I've got a few questions regarding Fallout 3's performance on the xbox 360.
I have the game, just wondering if anyone else is having these issues.

I'm currently at revit city, inside the huge chip and I'm getting a fair ammount of screentearing.I'm running the game from the HDD, I've tried playing it streaming off the disc but there's no difference. Is anyone else getting screantearing?

About running the games off the hdd, is there's any benefit besides saving the drive and lowering the noise. eg load times are better? I havn't noticed any difference.

Great game, playing it in short bursts, enjoying it much more than Oblivion.

i like the Alaskan environment compared to the bleak wasteland

OMFG, I forgot that this is Bethesda we're talking about. Hopefully Oblivion set a precedent as far as how they'll be handling the bigger DLC in their games.

Yeah, the screentearing I get is pretty bad and it happen everywhere.

It took me one hour of constantly saving and reloading to get to San Fran.

It takes place before the bombs were dropped, but, really, it'll be a war torn battlefield and look similar. Just snowy.

My 360 seems to have a hard time reading this games disk, whats that about? I'm installing it to the HDD right now since dealing with an sometimes unreadable disk is annoying.

I prefer the vanilla Fallout 3 look, as opposed to the HD texture pack.

I'd rather they do it the Morrowind way, with two huge expansion packs.

That would actually be great too.

Oh man, I've done lots of questing and killing of Raiders and yet I haven't even touched the metro yet! Jesus, mang.

So I just started this game yesterday. Any tips for a player new to Fallout? Any skills/stats/perks to avoid? Any major items that are missable as I go through the game?

Is this game like Oblivion where the monsters level up with you? When I realized this about Oblivion after having trouble with monsters on the very first LVL I sent that thing right back to gamefly.

Oblivion has a difficulty option in the pause menu, which really gives you no excuse for dying.
