The Official Fallout 3 thread of post-apocalyptic proportions!

is it just me or is this game really hard? I die all the time, my weapons do almost no damage and there's so many super mutant's around. I feel so underpowered, about 3-4 hours in, level 4 or 5

Not really.
(A) What difficulty you set on?
(B) stay the hell outa DC for awhile.
(C) VATS is your friend.
(D) loot - sell - repeat
(E) repair skill is another good friend

Holy crap, I've been avoiding this thread because I like discovering things on my own but...

I had no idea you could get multiple companions! On my second playthrough I'm going to try and get all six.

The game is actually quite easy on Normal difficulty. Don't try playing it as an FPS or TPS, VATS is a must, especially early in the game. And like Anton said, stay off the right side of the map for a while.

You can only get 2 without mods and only Dogmeat and a another companion if you dont use a glitch.

Unless they found a new glitch

Is it true that there are 80 endings or whatever?

There is a collage of pictures shown at the end taken from your play through. The different combination's thereof have been called different "endings."

I still didn't have many problems with the ending. Was it a little weak? Yeah, but the whole full circle aspect
with regards to your father
was pretty cool.

Is there any possible way of sending someone else in, or simply refusing to enter?
I've only beat it once.

Yes the beginning is a bitch. But after I went to Galaxy News Radio I collected so much ammo that from then on I was always stocked.

Try investing in the sneak skill and either avoid patrols you don't want to tangle with (travel at night until you level it higher), or approach close to get high percentage head shots.

So when I first played the game I thought it was super hard and quite challenging. After restarting and understanding how the game works and whatnot the game is quite easy. What took me forever to do on my first play through seemed like a breeze on my second. I you also have lots more ammo then you ever had before.

Anyone else kinda feeling the same way?

so, if i wanna start this now, what are the essential mods i need? i assume theres a few ui ones

If you want a slower experience, I would recommend this mod that slows down exp gain. Personally, by the time I hit 20, I still had 1/2 the world unexplored, so.

http://www.fallout3nexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=97

The slower exp gain is noticeable, and better for the game imo.

Here's another one- Personally haven't tried it out, but the description says it slows down the experience gain, as well as a few other balance changes.

I personally like the UI change that was done in this mod as well.

Hm, GAF, I need some advice!

I'm thinking about asking for this as a gift for Christmas, but I have two options: the PS3 version or the PC version.

My PC stats are:
-Windows Vista
-NVIDIA 8600 GTS 256 MB
-2 GB RAM
-Core 2 Duo 2.4 GHz
-Monitor res 1440x900

For reference, mods are not a huge factor in deciding purchases for me (I barely have time to finish all my games at least once). I heard the PS3 version got patched recently, but I'm not sure how much things changed.

Thanks for any advice!

I am also considering buying the PS3 version of this game as a gift for myself for christmas, but I have a couple of questions:

1) Would I have to play prior Fallout games to understand this one?
2) How is the PS3 version? Do I have to install the 5GB the game requests (says so on the back cover) up front? or do I have to install it in parts, like MGS4?

No, cant answer the install question and the PS3 isnt getting the DLC, which might be a big deal to you

i havent played any of the previous fallout games and i enjoyed this one jsut fine. its its own game,no need to play the other games to understand anything that happens

There's no install, but the game will cache data to the HDD as you play.

I came across a scavenger sleeping in the middle of the road and he even had a pet Yao Guai. :lol Game never ceases to make me laugh. And I just realized the ghouls sound like Krusty the clown.

If you kill him, does the radio station change in any way? besides him not giving updates on your progress?

Okay this is a very specific query relating to book finding.

I'm in Vault 108 and I can see a book underneath a set of step ladders. Unfortunately the ladders are boxed in by several large crates. Now no matter what I can't get low enough for it to let me pick up the book, the collision detection of the ladders gets in the way. Has anyone else picked this one up? How did you do it?

What's the most effiecient way to kill a murluk, beating them with a baseball bat is a definate no-no and I'm doing the locate family member quest which requires me to jump in a place filled to the brim with them. :/

If you have the PC version, turn clipping off to access it. If not, you can't get it.

I'm going through Fallout 2 right now and it would be interesting if Bethesda tailored what they've done with the series to be more restrictive when it comes to manipulating the SPECIAL attributes after the preliminary character creation. There's something interesting about creating a certain character (Agile and Intelligent, or Strong and Perceptive, or Average across the board) that'll have larger implications down the line (that you have to deal with). These stats lose their importance knowing that you could manipulate them (you dont' have to, obviously but still).

I love the perks they created though but make it so perks are way more meaningful but come at less frequency.

Steroyd said:
Isn't there a bullet-lite way? :/

Bullets are probably the safe way to go. On a sneak attack, you can kill them with 1 or two rifle shots, or a shotgun shot to the head/legs/arms in close range.

If you want to save ammo, always go for the sneak attack for the criticals. If you melee them you'll just use the caps you saved on ammo for stimpaks and armor repair. kind of your choice on this one. What lvl are you and what's your ammo situation?

With all the mods out for Fallout 3 on the PC, is there any chance of anyone making a co-op mod? Is that possible?

I would give anything for 2-4 player co-op.

Right now I'm on level 7, holding out for the scrounger perk.

My ammo situation is... not very good I have lots of bullets for guns I don't have and when I go into the underground, I'm praying that there aren't many non human enemies because I run out of bullets just before I get to my destination.

I'm just too cheap ass on everything when it comes to RPG's.

Are you playing on hard? If not, by level 7, you should be able to take out just about everything with the exception of sniper encampments and mirelurks with melee weapons. Just keep lots of food with you and take advantage of water sources for health, you don't really even need stimpacks.

I'm a big advocate of going the melee only route for the first 7-8 levels or so. Up to then, snipers and mirelurks should be the only things giving you a problem. Even regular super mutants can be beaten down like a rag doll. By the time you hit 9-10, you should have a ridiculous ammo stash.

I didn't encounter many Super Mutants at 4 or 5... and if I did see them, I got the fuck out of dodge. I saw some at like level 6 when I mistakenly went through some subway tunnels into the DC area, but that didn't last long especially when I realized they could follow through doors. :lol

Once you start to encounter them on a regular basis, they're pretty killable. Having a companion is absolutely crucial as well. Charon and Fawkes made things so much easier as I progressed.

I was in the same position when I took on the fire ants in greyditch. Ran out of everything. Had to run around some ants because I had no ammo left.

If you need ammo, make a quick run to the Super Duper Mart(sp?) near megaton. It's very close to the main town. There are usually 2 raiders at the front, take them out and get ammo. Inside you'll find raiders and tons of ammo. consider this your resupply store. Don't come out until you loot everything worthwhile. At least for me, the enemies respawned inside, so be careful on your way out. The store is only 1 floor too, so it's easy to manage and it doesn't take a long time to clear out. You should have enough ammunition for a while after that.

Also, I would suggest doing Moria's Survival Guide first. Great way to lvl up and stock up on things.

I asked whether I should get the PS3/PC version earlier and got a couple responses, but I'm still wondering about PS3 owners post-patching. Any issues you've run into?

I think the Bethseda ruins are one of the best places to farm equipment. The Raider with the Flamer in the east building respawns with a Big Guns book. A sniper also respawns as well. Fully repaired Raider armor can get you some decent scratch as well.

If you can get the PC version and don't, you don't deserve the awesomess of Fallout 3! Mods always make Bethesda games a hundred times better :)

I've been pissing around in this game for roughly 40 hours...just noodling about and exploring, knocking off quests as they come but aiming to walk over every last square inch if it (or my wife) kills me.

Today, I made it to
Tranquility Lane.

What.
The.
Fuck.

Well, I'm back from my ban, during this "vacations from GAF" I wasted my time with Fifa and Fallout 3, and I have a couple of questions related to two sidequests:

Trouble on the Homefront

I helped Amata to become the new overseer, didn't kill his father and only using dialogue, I know that there is some unique item called "Father's books" it's useful? Where it is? And also, can I go back to the vault when i finally leave again?

Tenpenny Tower

I managed to convince all the residents that the ghouls could live in the tower, now everyone (well, almost) is happy in the tower now, but Tenpenny is nowhere to be found, and Roy Philips the ghoul seems to know something when I ask him about Tenpenny. Is he dead? Is he important or related to any other quest?

If you're running low on caps then use some of the ammo you don't need. I was poor until i realised i'd never use a Flamer in my current character build so i now use Flamer Fuel when i barter. I still forget now and then though and pay with caps when i should have used ammo :)

Teehee guess I didn't need any bullets, I had the option to stealth into a Mirelurk lair and plant an observer on an egg (which I ran past a billion times. ~_~ ).

Finally getting the hang of the game now, getting EXP all over the place and made it to half way through level 9 quite quickly.

This game is damn mean though, getting to Rivet City from Grayditch was a pain in the ass.

The start is very mean at the start but it does force you to learn how to survive. Once you've learnt some tactics and how to conserve resources it puts you in good stead for the rest of the game and by the end you'll probably be swimming in ammo and caps :)

They had a little "disagreement" and Tenpenny happened to slip off the tower...
