The Official Fallout 3 thread of post-apocalyptic proportions!

Why do you want that instead of the
Alien Blaster
?
Woooooooh, the wha? I'll have that too :)
Is that another random encounter, at an unmarked location or part of a quest?

I don't want the
firelance
in preference to anything. It's just that it's around here somewhere and i'd like it. It's mine, the game gave it to me then cruelly put it out of my reach but it's here *somewhere*.

Oh! Will Dogmeat be able to get it for me or show me where it is and can he Fast Travel with me? I leave him in Megaton most of the time.

WOW that was one of the worst endings ever.
Aside from just being abrupt and anticlimatic the entire thing falls apart when you're friend, a giant intelligent super mutant who can walk through deadly radiation levels no problem is standing right next to you. I was ready for a choice to come up like "Hey Fawkes you do it", but nope.

The ending was garbage, I finished this morning. So abrupt, no feeling of payoff at all.

There was a choice, but
he refused to do it just so that we can become a hero
:lol

My biggest gripe about the final battle before ending was
our side is overpowered. I have Liberty Prime, a squad of brotherhood, Fawkes and his gatling laser, plus me at max level with lethal weapons and an Alien Blaster. It was a breeze, Enclaves can't even do anything.

Yep, you can use Dogmeat around
the crash site
and he'll bring it back to you if he finds it.

Regarding the other weapon, it's probably the most powerful weapon in the game. To find it,
just head north from the MDPL-13 Power Station until you pick up a radio signal. Tune into that signal and just follow it to its origin. You'll find the Alien Blaster + a lot of Alien Power Cells.

Ah, guess I forgot to talk to him before I sent what's her face in to die. The Enclave were incredibly weak. I kept killing guys with the plasma rifle in one or two shots and my energy weapon level isn't even all that high. :/

Just finished the game, couldn't find what the playing time is but I'm assuming it's linked to Windows game live somehow so not going to bother with it but I'm estimating clocking in at around 70-80 hours.

The ending isn't great, but it isn't as horrible as people make it out to be, imo. I feel like they should have dragged out the march a bit more and paced it all a lot better. The Enclave
ought to have had a more considerable resistance force
but I have a hunch that it might have been performance issues that prevented a more "epic" showdown as I noticed some considerable performance drags as the fireworks started flying.

Overall, it was a slightly tamer-than-expected ending to a great game. Major compliments to Bethesda for stealing a cool month of my gaming life.

So how will the DLC work if you complete the game? Should I wait to finish it till after the DLC releases?
The game makes a hard save for you right before the ending. I think as long as you keep that save, you should be able to continue fine when the DLC hits.

Oh ok cool thanks, but there is a no turning point part in the story that you should save at so you can continue questing right?

Where it creates the save is that point. It's just before the point of no return.

I want to keep my Karma positive, but I've just accidentally started a side quest that could affect it, and the story.

I stumbled upon Paradise Falls, and now a slaver wants me to capture 3 people. I really don't want to do this. Is it possible to free them later?

I ended up shooting all the slavers for + karma. The quest is still in my log though.

I don’t want to set the world on fire

Yes, you can free them later. I'd advise you to just slaughter everyone in PF instead though. You get good karma for killing slavers.

Not if you want the achievement for the quest. What I did is make a seperate save and just finish the quest, got the achievement and got on with my regular game (where I murdered everyone in Paradise Falls).

If you don't care about that then by all means kill the son of a bitch.

I went in there guns blazing, killed every single slaver and freed the slaves and I got the achievement.

I've found both alien weapons.

Are you picking up power cells near Meresti Station? If so then you have to jump onto the large trash bins and then up to the roof of the tunnel. You'll find a blaster on the roof.

I'm trying to skim through the last few pages to see if anyone else is having a similar problem to a buddy of mine. I had very few technical issues with the game, but for whatever reason the game freezes every single time he travels to either Rivet City or the Jefferson Memorial, making it impossible to finish the main story. Are there any workarounds out there that anyone knows of?

360 version BTW, and the cache has been cleared and the game has been installed and uninstalled with the same problem.

Looks lovely. I'm going to dive back in this afternoon and have a hunt around for any decent mods in the last couple of weeks.

I really want to do something with an abandoned SatCom tower, but those things are so tightly built that trying to dump an extra doorway or sunken staircase in at ground level is proving difficult whilst still keeping the feel of a fairly tight tower environment.

Both? I thought there was only one =O

No, I wish it was that easy. It happened out by
Alexandria Arms
. I'm going to take Dogmeat there in a minute to see if he can sniff out anything.

Wish me luck!

Please god... How much longer do these subways last? I've done Those!, Bloodlines, and am now working on the initial GNR quest. I can't take much more of this shit... It's gotten so much worse since heading towards GNR too, now the above ground sections are just linear pieces of shit connecting one goddamn subway to another... Why can't I jump above you mister pile of rubble? I want to be free. I don't wanna go into that fucking subway station anymore. Please make it stop...

Has anyone found Arlington Cemetery? I've looked all over the area near the Arlington Library, constantly doing sweeps of the radar for undiscovered locations.

I've tried googlin and gamefaqs and all that, but for some reason nobody seems to have bothered sharing this piece of info.

Get used to it. 80% of the game is subway trudging. Although..

The inner city of Washington consists of ~10 walled-off zones connected by subway. Once you've been in a zone you can of course fast-travel to it, so you really only have to enter the subways once.
That is what I did as well. I just opened up everything as soon as possible (Explorer perk ftw) and used fast travel to whatever location was needed in upcoming Quests.

If I were you, I'd bookmark the site for future use. It's extremely useful.

err.... maybe if your sense of direction is worse than that of a demagnetized compass.

Yeah, I exaggerated, but it's certainly far FAR too much. I'd defintiely say over 10%, considering the main Quest and quite a few side ones are more or less centered around the area.

Still, since it's obviously concentrated just on the southeast of the map, I'd reveal them all as soon as possible and stick to the fast trouble route

Got all achievements. Like people said, ending was blah. Even the event before the ending was blah and very unsatisfying. It didn't help that it didn't make sense. But, the game is ace. I loved nearly every minute of it. It's unfortunate the actual main game is very short but the amount of things you can do is overwhelming overall.

Ok, finally got a chance to crack this open, since picking it up in November. Couldn't get to it then, because I was buried nee deep in other games. Anyway, I am enjoying it so far. I've left Vault 101 and arrived Megaton. Will have questions a little later if I get stuck, but so far I got the hang of it.

never played a fallout game and didnt really play much of oblivion (sooo not into the whole medieval kind of thing) but i decided to buy this today with my christmas gift card. haven't popped it in yet but IT BETTTEERRR BE GOOOOD lol.

I really didn't think I was going to enjoy this game as I hated Oblivion and couldn't stomach it after 2 hours but I'm halfway through the game (probably clocking in at 20 hours played so far) at the part shortly after
your dad dies
and enjoying it despite it's glaring technical flaws (clunky interface, horrible animation, glitches galore). I seriously hope Bethesda pays more attention to character animation on their next project. But props for making a great game nonetheless.

question: is there a resource that explains the armor values? I'd like to know exactly how the damage mitigation works so that I know when to take extra armor over stat bonuses and vice versa.

1UP did an interview with Emil Pagliarulo recently. Not too much meat, but one of the bigger questions was answered, which I'll post here in spoiler tags. Needless to say, the interview itself is pretty full of spoilers.

1UP Somewhat related to that: Why are companions not an option for inputting the Project Purity code? You already have the option to have Sentinel Lyons input the code in your place. There are three viable options for an alternate to input the code: Fawkes, Sergeant RL-3N, and Charon. The player has already experienced a situation where Fawkes can enter an irradiated room and perform a task, RL-3N should follow his programming to obey you, and Charon would not only become healthier due to the radiation, but he's established as essentially a slave who will do whatever his contract-holder orders him to do. To the player, the inability for either to input the code seems really contradictory.

EP: That's a great question, and one that's obviously come up quite a bit in different forums. Let me try to shed some light on why the game is like that -- it's a pretty interesting look inside the development process.

All of the followers were implemented into the game fairly late in development, after the main story had already been nailed down. So, you know, we had the scene at the end of the game, with deadly radiation, and never really compensated for the fact that you could have a Supermutant, or Ghoul, or robot, who could possibly turn the purifier on for you. We'd only ever planned for you sending Sarah Lyons into the purifier, because we knew, from a story standpoint, that she'd definitely be in there with you.

What we could do -- and what we did ultimately do -- is cover that stuff in dialogue. You can ask those followers to go into the purifier, and they'll tell you why they won't. We felt that fit with their personalities, but really, they didn't "sell" that to the player in a single line of dialogue. So, in the end, the player's left with a, "Huh, why the hell can't they do it?!" sort of feeling.

So the story does kind of break down. But you know what? We knew that, and were OK with it, because the trade-off is, well, you get these cool followers to join you. You meet up with Fawkes near the end of the game, and it's true you can go right with him to the purifier. So we could've not had him there as a follower, and that would've solved the problem of him not going into the purifier -- because, at that point in development, that was the only fix we had time for. But we kept it, and players got him as a follower, and they seem to love adventuring him with. Gameplay trumped story, in that example -- as I believe it should have.

So if we'd planned better, we could've addressed that more satisfactorily. But considering how it all went down, I feel good about the decision we made there.

Reading that, I get the feeling that a good portion of the team wasn't too happy with the ending as well. Unfortunately, by the time they got to that point the rest of the game and story was so far gone that it would take too much time to rework the story around an improved ending.

yeah, seems like they just ran out of time, of course the "ending" has gotten eaten alive by nma and most of gaf, mebbe they can elaborate on it with dlc, or an expansion. a 6 month delay woulda been better for the ending, but financial suicide for the game.

But with each of these, even if the player character doesn't die,
the game ends. We'd discussed this, and were like, "You know what? Fallout and Fallout 2 ended. We should end our game, too." What we didn't realize is that, largely because of Oblivion, people really expected Fallout 3 not to end! It's something they've come to expect of us, and we underestimated that. You can be sure it's a mistake we won't repeat in the future.

might wanna re(play) fallout 2....... :lol

is there storasge in the game where I can put all my stuff in a locker or something and find it in any other similar locker anywhere in the world? or do I only get what I can carry?

you get a house in megaton or ten penny depending on the bomb choice, plenty of lockers

You can stow all your stuff in lockers or containers or whatever.Just be careful because you might lose your items.I think most containers respawn their loot or something(someone else explain:P)

Also you can use
Charon ,Fawkes or any other companion or your house in Megaton/Tenpenny Tower

Ok just got this game and I must say I'm OVERWHELMED at the amount of things you can do as soon as you step out of Vault. I don't know where to start.
