The Official Fallout 3 thread of post-apocalyptic proportions!

The game's designed for the levelcap. If you want to level more and are a PC gamer, downgrade your character (posted a brief howto here).

If the levelcap wouldn't be in place, your character would just get crazily overpowered. The monsters would have to level along (not actually happening for already discovered areas), and at some point, the weapons wouldn't suffice for such strong monsters, so they'd have to level as well, which isn't part of the whole plan, leads to inflation, levelling would become pointless etc

Uggh...

Is it so difficult to add more difficult eneimies/areas, once you reach a certain level? It's pretty much in the ABC of game design. For instance Im currently playing Castlevania on DS, as I level up, I also enter into new areas and the game has harder enemies. It's pretty simple. Im at level 40, and just got to the last boss, never had to grind once.

I understand they wanted to make the game non-linear as possible, but its okay to have certan areas with much harder enemies, that prevent you from surviving.

Also making energy weapons so expensive without a significant benifit, and large weapons too heavy and hard to find doesn't do much to help the variety of combat customazation.

don't get me wrong, I love the game, but the few of you that are denfending it for stupid reasons are really silly.

Old Olney

I've found energy weapons to be more durable and cost less AP in VATS. Big guns can be bought from shops and are far from too heavy. My Big Guns character walks around with Eugene, a Fatman, and a Missile Launcher in addition to the Wazer Wifle, the Lincoln's Repeater, and the Reservist's Rifle. This is with 250 carrying capacity and I always have enough left for looting.

I've just started and I'm in Megaton, how can I sleep if all the beds have owners even if no one is in them? Without sleep I do not know how to pass the time of day, I need it to be day to get into the supply store.

I also picked Repair, Small weapons and energy weapons as my three main skill. I guessing two weapon skills is overkill, can I just dump points into something else or do I have to start back at the exit to the vault? What is a useful non-combat skill to have in general?

Hit the back (or select) button and you can wait as long as their's no enemies nearby.

Should I just store all my ammo for later in the game? I find that i'm running out of 10mm very fast but i'm always careful on what I shoot and use close combat where possible but it's tough, still love the game :D

I'm only about 2 hours in mind you, not rushing this game and only playing when I know I can sit there and play it for long periods of time.

I also went for strength and heavy weapons as main skills, might have chosen a bad mix up there but it fits well with my bald space marine look!

Thanks, that was driving me crazy. Why is there a common house in town with a bunch of beds I can't use? Can I not rent one then? 120 caps for the whore seems like a lot if you just want to get to full health.

You can use the bed in the nearby school if you don't have access to your Megaton house/Tenpenny suite yet.

I'm not defending it at all. I don't think it breaks the game, but yes, it sucks if you end up at the cap early, obviously..

I shudder every time I see those two words.

I had a great time when I stumbled out of
Vault 92
and just "happened" upon Old Olney.

*Sees big ol' upright thing in the distance*

*sneaks in closer to see what it is*

VATS says: "Deathclaw"

"First Deathclaw sighting! Excited. Let's take it out and see how tough it is."

*firefight, melee*

"Whew, that was a little hard, but not too bad. I can take out that other one right there."

*shoots with hunting rifle, dead on and took out a good chunk of health*

"Awesome!"

*Three more Deathclaws rounds the corner and all four starts rushing my position.*

*runs away screaming*

Scared me the first time I wandered in there too. I later returned wearing power armor and the alien blaster. Die, fuckers!!

It wasnt too bad for me since I got to it after I hit level 20. Plus I had the Tesla armor and fawkes with me.

Fawkes even took on a super mutant behemoth head on, even survived the mininuke I shot at it.

Damn where do yall get all the mininukes? I havnt even fired my MIRV

I found one in that one crazy dude's rigged alley.

Is there a point to that by the way? I ended up having to reload and just send that Wanderer in to blow up.

When I played through the game, I had much more trouble with the Giant Radscorpions and the ProtectBots, due to their extremely high defense, than I did with Deathclaws... if I just stayed back and picked the 'Claws off I was fine (a few of my perks went into increasing my accuracy, stuff like "Sniper" or the perk you get from Dr Zimmer in "The Replicated Man")

According to the guide it's an isolated instance so you can do what you want. There is no way to reach the crazy guy on the 2nd floor. I sniped him and looted the brain chunk that fell on the floor. Then I sneaked a grenade on the wanderer I saved and got that achievement.

Using mods is addictive, just using a few basic mods at the moment.

Slower levelling, Fallout weather overhaul(gets rid of that yellow/green filter)
Color Hi-Detailed map and Free play after main quest.

Am still amazed at the sheer amount of mods that are already out.

They come in fast, it was the same with Morrowind and especially Oblivion. The bigger ones can take a while to come out, but the modding community cooks up fixes and tweaks very quickly when they're given the tools (and even without them).

Why are you guys arguing about the level cap? It's not like the level is relevant at all. ;) From the start to the beginning I always did the same - hit RB and aim on the head. And I always won. Imo combat in this game is broken, the only fair review without hype I read was the Giant Bomb one.

hoping someone can answer this, the guy I sell Scrap Metal to in Megaton has completely left my game, I have waited forever in the water facility and he never shows up; only the guy who is addicted to drugs. What has happened?

Same thing happened to me and a couple other GAFfers. Apparently we killed him in a warp.

My errors went away, yay! Just a bug with the game and not a hardware issue.

I'm level 11 and only have 7% of the Trophies. :lol
Definitely going to need more playthroughs. I'm actually trying to limit myself and not do EVERYTHING with this character, otherwise I think it would be boring playing through it multiple times.

EDIT: And I dislike some of you for not using spoiler tags.

It'd be awesome if they could mod in rain.. radioactive rain maybe, so you have to take cover?

Forget that guy, go to Fort Independence and trade x2 Scrap Metal for Frag Grenade or Stimpacks.

Yeah, Deathclaws aren't that bad to me ever since I got a dart gun. The biggest issue they pose for me is killing Charon in seconds flat before I can cripple them. =(

I have the most trouble with Sentry bots, luckily I haven't seen all that many.

The combat sucks on normal, I don't understand why people play on normal :(
Change it to hard or better yet, very hard. You'll be forced to target arms, legs etc.

Finished last night after 130 hours and a lot of wandering the wilderness.
Loved it to pieces even if the ending was a bit of an anti-climax. Off to finish Mass Effect next and then go back for my second Fallout 3 playthrough and hopefully some DLC.

Bloody hell, it sure was fun :)

That's bad game design right there then.

It is, but it doesn't affect you if you know about it (and thus raise the difficulty).

I didn't know about that before. By now I put over 30 hours into it. Bad luck I guess. Won't buy a Beteshda game again, they always kinda suck in the gameplay departement. At first I loved it but after a while I really felt the Oblivion behind it. In the end I was glad that it was finally over. Imo even the story sucked (or at leat the storytelling) and that should be the most important thing for an RPG? I don't get why this game got GOTY nominations etc.

from eurogamer http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/fallout-3-operation-anchorage-interview?page=2

Broken Steel not only extends the game to level 30, it alters the core ending. It allows the player to continue exploring the ashen Wasteland and see the fruits that are born, or that die, from their decisions. It will reprise several main characters, and conclude some of the story threads left dangling.

So I am wondering how this affects the
good ending because you die. maybe you wake up with cool new mutant abilities :lol

anyone make a decent unarmed/melee build?

I hope Im not at the point of no return yet....I really want to finish more sidequests. Here's where I am....

I just woke up after getting knocked out by those two guards, and John Henry Eden wants to meet me face to face

Do i still have an opportunity to finish more sidequests, or am i stuck now?

You can do more sidequests after that. However, not after the subsequent story mission.

Edit: So when does the Lvl 30 DLC come out? After I beat the game, I just loaded up a save and started wandering around. I never have an urge to replay these types of games (already put 40+ hours in and don't care about rerolling), so should I just stop and wait for the DLC so there are still things to do?

You are fine to do more sidequests once you complete that bit of the story

is sawed off shotgun considered a small gun (I'm guessing) but is it a handgun? I'm wondering if my gunslinger perk will make it more accurate.

Do yourself a favor and:
Get the Bobblehead in Raven Rock, in Col Autumn's room, you won't be able to go back to that area after the mission is over

Gunslinger should apply. It applies to the 10mm SMG as well.

Okay guys how the hell do I get caps early in the game. I just left Vault 101 and spent like 5 maybe 6 hours exploring, but how do I get more caps. I sell all my loot, but it seems like I get just enough to buy some stimpacks. I also have very little ammo. It seems like every 5 min I die.

The beginning of the game was definitely the most challenging. You really have to make with what you got. I would use melee weapons as often as I could and save all of my ammunition. Don't waste caps on Stimpacks. Just keep exploring and loot everything you can find. Cigarettes are the best pound per cap item to find usually. I was picking up almost anything and selling it. It's tough, but after awhile you'll be on your feet and have more caps, ammo, and stimpacks than you know what to do with.
