The Official Fallout 3 thread of post-apocalyptic proportions!

I'm enjoying Anchorage so far, just like I thought I would. I'm looking forward to finishing it and taking the loot out into the main game. How anyone can beat this in 2 hours is beyond me, by the way. I played it for at least 2 hours today, and I'm no where near the end of it.

Yeah, you would have to burn rubber to finish it in two hours and not really enjoy the scenery. I've put maybe 6 hours into it so far and am currently trying to figure out how to bring down the
force field

Finished the DLC last night. I really liked it, it was a welcome change to how the rest of the game goes (i.e. - more shooting, less exploring). The locations looked good, and the rewards are pretty bad ass, especially for my melee/stealth-based character.

For those that have finished it, question:
After entering the armory vault at the end, did all of the Outcast soldiers go batshit insane and start shooting at you and the lady who goes into the vault with you? I have no idea what triggered that, I just walked into the armory and started grabbing my rewards, next thing I know they are shooting up the place, killing the Sibley lady who goes in with ya. I even reloaded my last save to see if it happened again, and sure enough it did. Just wondering if that happened to anyone else.

If you
open the armory door, but stand around the other Outcasts, you'll hear a discussion between their leader and that angry sidekick. The sidekick + all the other unnamed Outcasts will become traitors, and will try to get you, the lil' lady and the Outcast leader killed.
It's scripted to happen like that.

Ahh, that explains it. I just opened the door and ran in and started grabbing shit like an idiot :lol . Thanks.

When your choices are "Listen to Kojima" or "Listen to anybody else on the planet," you should generally go with option B.

Just finally got around to being able to spend some time on this and play it...

This would have been my GOTY if I had played it last year. Darn engrossing.

They are both right. War, as in warfare, HAS changed, but war as a whole remains unchanged. People still die.

Okay I'm doing the mission where you had to take a package to somebody and you found out "The Family" has killed them and taken the boy. So now I'm looking for them but I've gone to all the places they mentioned and haven't run across them. The Outdoor Cinema, A train station, and a hideout. In the hideout there is a prison gate that requires a key that I can't seem to find so I'm not sure if that is just some bonus thing or where they are hiding although I doubt it.

So what obvious thing am I missing on where to find the family? I'd be happy with a clue just to set me on the right track.

In the train station, there are two ghouls who are making drugs. Off to the side of their lab area is a room that has high radiation and a trap door on the floor, that should get you on the way.

At one of the locations did you meet some Ghouls that asked for Sugar Bombs? Entrance is nearby.

That's what I thought but I went down there and I went through the whole tunnel but nobody was down there except for some traps. I came out on the other end to meet another group of ghouls. Did I somehow just miss them? There were a bunch of traps down there but I never saw anybody. I guess I'll just backtrack and see if I missed them.

Got it to work and finished it last night. I enjoyed the ride, got a lot of experience(not level 20 yet, but I can see why L20 players are disappointed, because there's a lot of exp. to be gained) and some cool stuff at the end. And when I raided the vault, the Outcast started shooting at me for some strange reason:p

Keep working at it, you were on the right path but there's more before you get there.

So I'm stuck inside Vault 92

Press on the mechanism on the actual door.

OXM's podcast recently uncovered a priceless gem of information for all Fallout 3 and achievement fans worldwide. Todd Howard, Fallout 3's Executive Producer stated that Fallout 3 will hit the 1350 mark after the March DLC pack titled "Broken Steel".

Howard states "the second one is going to have 4 more achievements worth 100 points, and the third one, right now, is going to have 6, worth 150 points." Howard continues to mention that it might not stop there, "350 points ... assuming these are the only ones we do."

Oooohh Bethesda, you do love to tease us. Not only does the DLC have plenty of points, but there may be more to come? It makes me smile inside ... and outside actually.

Oh, and if you do listen to the podcast ... good listen by the way, ignore OXM's Ryan when he states that Fallout 3 will be the biggest points haul on Live for any one title. Pah, has he heard of Halo 3? *jaw drops*

http://www.xbox360achievements.org/news/news-2153-

Looks like Fallout 3 will be the next game to break the 1250 achievement mark with 1350 in total with the 3 announced DLCs so far. Hints at the possibility of additional DLC beyond that.

Just realized I missed a bobblehead in Raven Rock and of course you can't get back in. I'm really digging the Gauss Rifle the knockdown rate on it is insane. I was knocking behemoths off their feet and destroying them while they were down. Really nice weapon.

Played Operation Anchorage for a little last night. I'm not a fan of the gameplay style they went for with the stationary health/ammo and squads. Half the time you can just tag the enemies and let your immortal sidekick take care of them.

Alaska looks cool though along with the new enemies and such, but it really just feel like a bad fps for the most part, with cocks replacing your eyes when it comes to aiming.

Regarding Operation Anchorage on PC version of Fallout 3: It only works on one profile. Despite paying the full 10 space bux for the dlc, the kosher/shitty way through GFWL, my wife seems unable to access the content with her Live profile. Anybody else having this problem and/or have a solution?

This game has by far the creepiest looking glitches i have ever seen. When i exited a building, Dogmeat looked like he had this black lined object stuck in his eye. I've sorta came across this glitch before, so i tried ignoring it. When i came into other building, the object got bigger. A few buildings later, the object covered my ENTIRE screen. The weird this is that this thing only comes up if Dogmeat is facing me. When he isn't looking, it disappears. I'm guessing it has something to do with the code for Dogmeat's vision.

Just thinking about it creeps me out.

*shudder*

try just bypassing GFWL altogether and dump the files into the main install of the game

also if you guys are looking for mods but want the good ones, fallout3nexus uses some voodoo magic algorithm (aka true bayesian estimate: weighted rating (WR) = (v ÷ (v+m)) × R + (m ÷ (v+m)) × C) to rate "Popular/Good" mods for their Top 50 files, there still may be hidden gems but its a good place to start looking for mods Most of the ones im using are there surprisingly enough.

I'm going motherfucking mad. It crashes EVERY TIME IT SAVES! What the chicken fuck? I had this same problem before and I've completely forgotten how to solve it.

Anyway, while I was in that subway area I found some key, opened a safe with naughty nightwear in it, and a guy named "Lugnut" came running into the room and demanded it. :lol I've got a good speech skill so I convinced him to let me keep it. It's amazing the amount of random shit that pops up in the game, and the amount of stuff you can encounter even beyond the side missions. Is the holotape that talks about delivering a "package" referring to the nightwear or something else?

Yepp, the "package" is the nightwear.

Holy shit.

So I had a quick look online to see where I was missing one of the Super Mutant Behemoths for the achievement and it turns out I had missed Takoma Park.

Which brings me to my point. OMG Takoma Park!! Its this whole area with houses and shit to explore and whatever that you can only access through a particular subway.

I would totally never have found this place. You have to go through Vernon Square East and its the only way.

I want to know if there is any other places like this? Anyone know? I know theres a few subways I havent explored yet as I got bored with them and just ignored a lot as I found them.

edit, in other news I just found my 30th Nuka Cola Quantum for the NKCChallenge! (I didnt get the quest until I have played over 100hrs drinking every Quantum I came across, so they were pretty short in my world:lol )

Hey guys, I have some problems with downloading the DLC. The download always chrashes on 96%....

I alreday deleted the incomplete file and restarted the cownload a couple of times but always have the same outcome. Deleting the installed Fallout 3 from my hard drive has also no effect.

Someone of you maybe know what else I can do??

I'd really appreciate some help here.

Congrats! I'm doing the NCChallenge too, any recomendations where I can find lots of Nukas Quantum?? I need them! :D

btw I'm 50 hours in the game and I'm only about to finish Scientific Pursuits :lol

There are quite a few Nuka Cola Quantum bottles at Paradise Falls. If you go into the leader dude's house you can steal quite a few. Same goes for Super Duper Mart

There is also a broken down Nuka Cola van in the North East of the map that has shit loads of regular and Quantum. It doesn't show up on the map, but I found it whilst travelling between Republic of Dave and Old Olney. If I remember correctly its under a bridge, by a scavenger's hideout.

Damn the DLC was sweet. I took all the loot they didnt say anything. Man the armor looks bad ass with the us flag on the back and DAMN the gauss rifle is gangsta.

It is the deathclaw killer; shoot 'em once in the leg...that knocks them down, then I finish 'em off with the flamer.

Stoked to hear about more dlc in the future

So, just listened to a Todd Howard thing on the OXM podcast and it's pretty much confirmed that they're rewriting the ending.

Also, the level 30 cap appears to be extremely difficult to reach. I almost hope that there is some retroactive way to level up because I hit the level 20 cap fairly early on in the game, but I kind of doubt it. Oh well.

Question:

I'm about 35 hours into the game. I just finished the "Waters of Life" mission (or whatever it is called). I am lvl 19, and I'm very close to hitting lvl 20.

What should I do? Should I stop playing until the expansion pack comes out which ups the cap to 30?

Considering how much of the main quest you still have to complete, it's either a) just keep playing past level 20 b) hit level 20, stop and start a new character and keep exploring or c) wait until (likely the end) of March when the level cap hits 30.

I chose b, but I could understand why you'd want to do c. I did do a bit of a, just because some sidestuff is easier at a higher level.

At this point it might be worth it to wait, if you want to hit level 30. I'm only worried because there might be a level 30 achievement and I'm at a point where there's nothing left for me to kill except random enemies.

Oh yeah, another news drop was that Fallout 3 would potentially raise the achievement cap again.

That's for the confirmation of my thoughts.

Man, that fucking blows. It really does.

So, if I were to continue playing my current character for the next couple of months, is there anything I could do to either (i) continue improving the character without further leveling, and/or (ii) "save" the XP I earn so that it can be put toward the 20-30 leveling, when the patch goes live?

Re (i), I know that I can read books and collect bobbleheads (both of which I have done fairly little of). Anything else?

Man, I feel so conflicted. I'm so sad. Haha.

Has anyone explored the option that the xp you "gain" will carry on once the level cap is raised? So there isn't any lost xp or anything.

You could find some rare armors/weapons. That's what I did after I leveled up to 20. I have almost all of them.

That would make my day. Christ. Hearing that would make me smile.

I guess that between bobbleheads, books and rare armor, I have a fair amount of room to 'grow' without leveling past 20. Still, though, it seems like such a fucking waste to waste so much fucking XP that could be put toward the 20-30 grind.

Why in the fuck is the level cap so low in Fallout 3? I don't fucking understand. In Oblivion, I think I played the game for about 60 hours and never stopped improving/leveling. Fuck.

I've put about 4 1/2 hours into Anchorage, and I'm not finished yet. It is such bullshit that anyone can claim to finish this in 2 hours.

They made a miscalculation on how it would effect the audience. They've already admitted as much and stated they'll never do it again.

It's a question if whether or not there is an internal counter because at least in the UI, once you hit 20 it stops showing XP game. On the PC version, you can use a console command to increase the level cap, so there might be.

Oh, interesting. I've not been "keeping up" on the game, post-release. Is there a particular interview I should read?

So, did they think that people would enjoy playing through the game in 25-30 hours, and then starting again, basically?

There was a thread about it. Todd Howard stated that the biggest mistakes they made in the game was having it end, and having a level cap, and that they'd never do it again.

My presumption is that yeah, they expected multiple playthroughs, which honestly, I am going to do at some point anyway. Picking completely different perks and trying the game a different way is part of Fallout.

My current character has been level 20 for awhile and I've done tons of quests after.. so I wouldn't mind to get all that experience once the cap is raised.

But I'm also sure I wouldn't mind when it comes out down the road along with the pitt to start the game all over with a new character so either way I'm sure I'll be ok with it.

I think I'm going to go small guns as always but grab melee next time instead of worrying about stuff like speech/science. If I go through the op. anchorage dlc early in the game and grab the chinese stealth suit I can see it being a lot of fun to play through a lot of the missions with that as opposed to the guns blazing way I have before.

Just finished Anchorage. You really do get a nice haul afterwards. And I just read on the fallout wiki that
You can wear the winterized T-51B power armor before the Citadel training
. Nice tip for starting a second character.

Basically what I'm doing is starting a new character for the first two DLC, and then for the 3rd I'm gonna decide which I want to carry forward past level 20.

First playthrough: Small Arms/Hacking/Lockpicking focused character
2nd (current one) for Anchorage: Stealth/Melee Weapons/Explosives
3rd for The Pitt: Not sure yet, probably Big Guns/Energy Weapons

I'm about to get 1100/1100 achievements with my 2nd, also.
