The Official Fallout 3 thread of post-apocalyptic proportions!

Just gotta do the final mission of Broken Steel and I'm done with the DLC... I really enjoyed The Pitt, the Refinery was one of the most impressive dungeons in the game (even though finding the ingots w/o the aid of a guide was a bit of a P.I.T.A.). Broken Steel is OK so far, worth it to raise the level cap, but anything beats Anchorage, which was painfully boring. Gonna wait till the other 2 DLC packs come out before leveling up to 30, I'm at 24 now.

is anyone else having freezing problems with windows 7? the game worked great for me in vista 64, but now in the windows 7 rc, it freezes after about 15 minutes or so of play (upon entering vats)

You know, I actually found them all pretty easy to find. I wasn't even trying to look for them tbh...just ran into them while I was walking around. It was pretty cool when I got back and the guy just gave me all the shit at once.

Hey Fallout 3 PC players....help me out here.

I just grabbed a copy of this for pc and I'm trying to get it to run and everytime I start the game I just get a "fallout3 has stopped working" dialog box. I have to ctrl-alt-delete out to the desktop and close it out. I'm running Vista 64 and have an 8800gt. I've tried basically all the other fixes I can find so far. I'm wondering if anyone has any suggestions?

I bought the original PS3 version from Amazon a month ago or so when it was a "Today's Deal" for like $32 or something like that. I started playing it, but then I moved, and then my PS3 died and I lost my save game. So, I was going to restart it soon, but since Bethesda is still apparently game-design handicapped and still releasing BS last I see no reason to start the game again - nor spend any money on any of the other PS3 DLC - until BS is released.

I swear, why is this company so incompetent, and what happened to that guy on the forum that used to work for them? Shouldn't he be answering for this moronic release schedule?

If you lost your save game, then you've got many hours of gameplay before you would even begin to encounter the Broken Steel content.

in windows 7 the desktop goes to some low colour mode or something as the game starts, does vista do that? if it isn't try turning aero down/off whatever.

the only thing I can think of that is the equivalent of this in Vista is the Aero theme.....which I have turned off.

Does this game run well in Windows 7? Maybe I should d/l the newest RC of it...

Your loss.

You could suck it up and have an awesome game experience.

Or you could stomp off with a furrowed brow.

Not trying to be an ass, Ive stopped off on many a time myself in different situations. But I speak the truth

I'm merely doing what Patrick (I think, maybe it was someone else) and Garnett discussed on ListenUp maybe two or three weeks ago, where they seemed to think it would be better to not play the game until you have BS so that the level-cap is already removed and actually makes the added levels useful.

I didn't say I wasn't going to play it, I said I wasn't going to buy any of the DLC until BS was released.

Grayman said:
I've had some crashes but it is playable. Something aside from just vista may be at fault though.

yeah, I've tried installing/uninstalling different codec packs. Changing ffdshow configuration settings. Enabling UAC to run as administrator. I just wanted to play the game on my PC :( I know it will look a lot better than when I went through it on 360....

I got fairly frustrated by the glitchy ghouls in the metro area and put BS down for a while, but finally went back today and finished up. It was fairly enjoyable and the raise of the level cap alone probably makes it worth the money.

However, even playing through on Hard difficulty I finished up BS at only 25. Anyone have any suggestions on the best way to grind XP to hit 30? I did virtually all the side quests already before BS hit, so that is pretty much out of the picture.

If you didn't blow up megaton you can search for scrap metal and sell it to that guy. I think you get XP everytime.

I've played through the beginning to the end using Windows 7 RC. No problems at all.

ARGH! I have to replay about 2 hours or so, I was at the last mission but
project liberty
kept getting stuck!

Whew, got through the glitch finally and now I am onto Broken Steel! This game forces me to neglect all the other games I own.

Just played through The Pitt. It was kind of disappointing for me, just seemed like you didn't have to do much to progress through the main quest line. It was cool being in a new city for a little while though.

I guess I'm just burnt out of the game in general. Played for 60 hours, reached level 30 and had a ton of fun while doing so. The game just wasn't doing it for me once I reached the level cap. I'm sure I'll make a new character eventually, but I'm taking a break for now.

I finished up Broken Steel yesterday. Ended up being level 27 by the end (was 20 going into it), mainly due to how many Enclave you kill. I loved Broken Steel from start to finish! The sidequests were great, and the main plot had an awesome conclusion.

I'm not gonna bother trying to get to 30 anytime soon, I'll just wait on Point Lookout.

Did any of you choose the Explorer perk at level 20? I know that there's more fun in finding all of the locations on your own, but it does sound tempting.

I didn't end picking it up until mid 20's. Wasn't really worth it imo. I thought you'd be able to fast travel everywhere once you had the perk, but you can't. Just having it marked on your map isn't enough, you still have to physically discover the location too.

So guys, I just double dipped and order Fallout 3 on PC. This is by no means a late to the party game though, 'cause I've put over 100 hours into the 360 version.

The main reason I've ordered the PC version is for mods though, so what mods are worth downloading?

... alright well I started playing this for the first time today... I'm starting to think that maybe this isn't my kind of game. I'm already feeling VERY overwhelmed with everything. I got out of the vault and headed towards the radio station so far.

Just wandering around I don't like how I can pretty much be killed at anytime. Since I have no real clue as to where I am going, I am stumbling up on places - then getting my ass kicked and getting killed or losing all of my damn health so fast. It's pretty frustrating considering I am just starting the damn game and I'm getting my ass handed to me so fast when I barley know the mechanics of the game! I feel like I need to constantly have a game guide opened while playing this game as well - which kinda hampers my enjoyment because apparently there are things you can "miss" or make "easier" by doing the "smarter" choice.

This is my first real WRPG and "choice based" type of game playing like this. I liked it at first, but now I am feeling very overwhelmed by all the choices that I can make and I don't really know what I am doing. I don't know if this is the right kind of game for me, there's almost TOO much freedom and I never really feel like I am doing the right thing or know where I am supposed to be going other than "head in this direction" and then I get assualted by all these crazy assholes along the way that I feel very unprepared to be fighting in the first place.

So I think I am going to ride this game out for a few more hours and see if I enjoy it more. But so far it has just been a very stressful beginning of the game of not really knowing where I am supposed to be, who I am strong enough to be fighting. Is it too much to ask that all enemies early in the game are near my level and that I not stumble upon these enemies that I am apparently unable to kill, and how am I supposed to even know that before losing half my health when we start fighting?

Convince me to start on board with this GAF. :-/

You should head to Megaton immediately after exiting Vault 101. Do some of the starter quests there (like Moira's). You should be finding better weapons and getting more familiar with the wasteland after a couple of her quests. You can also get a home in Megaton to setup as your base of operations.

Although I want to see your reaction when you reach the radio station :lol

... Here's my beef with the game so far, I go off wandering around and I run into enemies and I have no idea if I am capable of killing them before I actually pick a fight with them, if they are super strong they bleed my HP down to half almost immediately, so I decide to retreat and while retreating I'm still getting attacked and by the time I make my escape I am back to almost zero health, where I warp back to Megaton and heal again for another 100 caps! UGH. This happened to me four times after leaving Megaton.

So another beef with this game so far, how the hell am I supposed to know "don't go here, do this instead" unless I am playing the game with a freaking game guide sitting in front of my face? That's no fun at all. Yeah I figured out that I am underpowered to be roaming around the streets, but where exactly am I supposed to go/do in the meantime to level up? Just kill cockroaches all day? How was I supposed to know that it is more/less vital to do some of the starter quests to get weapons/armour that is necessary to be able to roam the streets safely?

This game makes me feel like a complete incompetent gamer. I am not new to RPGs by any means, but still this game gives me so much "freedom" then slaps my hand when I try to reach out for something by saying "you're not ready for that yet!". I get how important it is to talk to NPCs and stuff like that in a game like this, but yet... I dunno. Maybe this game isn't for me. I turned the game off in frustration tonight because I thought I was doing good and heading towards the radio station (I really don't know, the game just points me in a general direction on my pipboy map, yet there are buildings and rubble everywhere so it's not as easy as just traveling in a direction) then I got assulated by a super mutant and a terminator like machine with a freaking mini-gun. By the time I escaped from these assholes my health was super low, and I had ran into yet another enemy with an assault riffle who finished me off.

It seems to me like I need to play this game with a startegy guide in front of my face in order to know what I should be doing without getting frustrated... and that doesn't sound like a fun game to me at all.

Scorn me GAF, for I feel that I do not understand Fallout 3. :(

your experience sounds harder than mine playing on very hard. What are your stats and what skills did you tag? What weapons do you have? In megaton there may be an open bed somewhere, and there is a way to get a permanent house there(or somewhere else!) for little work.

Do you know that you can fire from the hip while running away?

Umm I got the repair, melee weapons, and I think Science skills or something. I am Lv 3 right now leaving Megaton. I am aware how to get your own house for resting, but I don't have enough Science skill to disarm the bomb at the moment, so I can't do that right now.

I know you can fire from the hip, but I guess I suck ass at aiming and I can't really do much damage and I take in way too much damage. Maybe I just need to switch up my armor or something, I dunno.

I just feel like this is one of those "play with a guide in your hands" type of games and I'm not really feeling that. I feel like if I don't have something guiding me through this game it's going to be a lot harder than it has to be, or I am going to miss out on some time saving stuff or just quests that I had no idea about. Again, maybe I am just BAD at this game and it isn't for me, but it has been a rough experience thus far for me.

I had a lot of trouble with Fallout at first, but eventually it just clicked. I also didn't use a guide at all aside from getting the bobbleheads, so it definitely isn't that kind of game.

You can get mentats in Megaton by talking around and meeting with someone at night, so I'd do that first. Use the mentats to disarm the bomb and get a house since that'll help, then go to Craterside Supply and start on the quest you get there. It's really long so you shouldn't do every part of it already, but it's a really good way to ease into the game and helped me out a lot.

I didn't use a guide until I'd played for about 50 hours. You absolutely DO NOT need a guide, just some general advice.

1) Start in megaton and do all the quests there.
2) Raise your small weapons and repair skills. Use repair to repair broken enemy equipment and sell them for big moneyz.
3) Get the Scrounger perk if you want tons of ammo
4) STOP USING THE GUIDE! Explore on your own. I don't really understand why you're finding it so hard, I'm playing on Very Hard and I don't die that much. You just have to be careful. Of course you can't go attacking Super Mutants at lvl 3, if you see one, RUN! Kill Raiders, Dogs, Bugs and other low-level enemies. Meeting enemies that kick your ass are a big part of what makes wrpgs fun, you're supposed to think "wow, guess I can't do that yet, but I'll be back!" and then come back at later levels for some satisfying revenge!

Thats because it is...kinda. The most fun I had was screwing up (for example my tag skills) but working with it and persevering. Follow the main quest until you feel comfortable/compelled to explore something else. If 10-15 hours in you're still not feeling it id advise giving it up. The first 12 hours of Fallout and Oblivion felt the same to me. I felt overwhelmed, unfocused, and i couldn't get into it. Oblivion i gave up after that 12th hour, fallout 3 im on hour 80 and counting.

Alright guys thanks for the advice. I'm going to give it another shot today and see if I can't get into it... I'll report my frustrations joy today.

Is there a maximum level in this game? I'm confused over the whole "maxing out your character" thing.

I mean, is there any way to have every perk or to bring up every skill to 100?

I've been doing the Moria quests all morning, everything seems to be at about my level so it's going well. Are these the quests when you guys said do the "megaton" quests? I also disarmed the bomb and got the house, so healing is a lot more manageable now.

The maximum level is 30 with Broken Steel, 20 without. I am only at 29 but most of my skills are maxed out. You get skill points each time you level up, and you can also add them to your skills through books and perks. It's quite easy to max out everything.

Yeah, the Moria quests and getting the house are good way to get started before you venture out to the radio station. You definitely need to give it a little time though, it will take awhile before the kills and the caps come easy, and for the first few levels you may find yourself running out of ammo a lot. (I know I did). So keep a good variety of weapons on you and don't pass up a chance to buy stimpacks/ammo. It's best to focus on one vendor, like Moria, the more you trade with her the more caps/inventory she gets.

In terms of levels, if you don't download broken steal, the level cap is 20, with broken steal, it's 30. On the 20 level cap you'll be hard pressed to max out everything, though you may be able to max out a good amount of skills if you play your cards right when leveling up (right perks, proper allocation of points, get bobbleheads etc.)

I'm not at level 30 yet, but at level 25 I'm already maxed on all but a few skills, I should be able to get the rest up to 100 by 30.

Another tip for maxing skills. Don't use XP points to get any skill above 90 before you find the bobblehead for that skill. Skill bobbleheads give you 10 points, so if you're above 90 you'll be wasting points. When books are taken into account, you could drop that even lower, say don't raise a skill up past 85-87 with XP points, and use bobblehead/books to fill the rest.

The only skill I really care to be at max is Lockpick.

Seriously, when it comes to these kind of games, I HATE not being allowed to open certain doors and containers.

Well, last night I finished Broken Steel. Now THAT'S how you end a game
Infiltrating Adams Air Force base, fighting to the top of the mobile platform and dropping the bombs was pretty epic
. I couldn't believe it when I had the option to
blow up Megaton/Rivet City/Citadel/etc. I chose not to of course!
I think I'm going to give the game a rest for a while. I still have yet to buy The Pitt.

I can confidently say that Fallout 3 is my game of the generation so far. In fact, it's one of my favorite games of all time. I felt like the survival of the entire wastes rested on my shoulders. Along the way I met some great people, some delusional people, and just plain not so nice people. I killed raiders, super mutants and slavers with extreme prejudice. I liberated towns. gave water to thirsty, homeless wastelanders. I preserved a bit of pre-war history, facilitated commerce among the towns and caravans, and exterminated the nasty Mirelurk infestation haunting downtown DC. After my handy work the innocent no longer have to live in fear. People are free to use the subway system without worrying about feral ghouls. And most importantly, free and clean water is available to all.

I think im kinda like you .. in a way, but i have that with most RPGS from the West, like Kotor, Oblivion and Mass Effect. I play them for a good 10 hours, im not really enjoying it because i suck at the combat, i suck at placing my stats and i suck at getting gear and i dont get it in general.

I give up, let it go for a month/months, pick it up again.. but now i kinda know what im doing and i choose other feats and stats, and i love it.

Right now im playing and loving Mass Effect and having tons of fun.

how many hours of gameplay will I have with the 3 DLCs together?

And I suppouse that with the 3 DLCs I can get my character to level 30 right?

Point Lookout achievements have been updated into the official listing now on XBL:

(guess I'll spoiler them)
The Local Flavor
"Completed 'The Local Flavor'" - 20 points

Walking With Spirits
"Completed 'Walking With Spirits'" - 20 points

A Meeting of the Minds
"Completed 'A Meeting of the Minds'" - 20 points

Bog Walker
"Discovered all locations within Point Lookout" - 40 points

So, as usual, 3 quest related and 1 extra. I guess the swamp is huge given that last one.
