The Official Fallout 3 thread of post-apocalyptic proportions!

I've bought this game a few days ago. I'm not too impressed so far. I loved the intro in Vault 101, and I enjoyed Megaton and its sidequests, but after that it all went downhill: A long series of boring metro tunnels, fights that require little or no strategy, and very few dialogue choices. I was excited to finally arrive in Rivet City, but it's a pretty awful place, all corridors and tiny rooms.

Anyway, I haven't played Oblivion, but Morrowind was definitely a better game than this, as were Fallout 1 and 2. Well, lots of people seem to love it, so I'll keep playing, but I'm not too hopeful.
Just go explore randomly for awhile. That's always the most fun for me.

I hit level 30 so I decided to start a new character so I wouldn't be grossly overpowered for when mothership zeta rolls in. This is my 4th one now and I'm still finding new stuff.

This is also the first time I'm trying to play as a good character. Both to get the achievements and just since all the last 3 were evil I figured it would be a good change.

Can anyone offer some advice about when to buy/play each DLC? I played a couple characters to about level 13 or so like six months ago, but put the game down to wait for the level cap increase and things. I've finally decided to start playing it again and was wondering if I should buy Broken Steel right away and if I should play Operation Anchorage/The Pitt at a certain level, etc.

I'm sure it's already been discussed but I couldn't find anything so perhaps someone can lend a hand. Thanks.

Hit my first known bug in Tenpenny today, wanted to see the residents murder each other using the love letter but the NPC was just parroting the same line. Had to laden her room with mines and give her a sledgehammer for an alarm clock. :lol

Are blood lines and the canterburry quests worth doing? I'm not sure I can be bothered.

It doesn't get too much better after you've explored some of the more interesting landmarks. The ending is particularly terrible; it left me with such a bad taste in my mouth I couldn't ever go back and play the game again.

I ran all the way to Rivet City. I hated breaking my normal flow of gameplay because I didn't explore any of the area between the Sewers and Rivet City. Cherry didn't even sleep with me afterwards for all I did once I took her there. Whore. :C

there are possibilities of unique rewards for blood lines.

It is one of the few quests in the game though where the green arrow won't help you. Well it might, but only if you have very high medical skill.

If you solve the quest peacefully,
You can learn a perk to get 20HP out of blood packs
One of the chat options might let you sell them for 15 or 20 caps, i haven't done that one.

don't talk to too many people in Rivet, you'll skip major storyline events.

Yeah, for some reason I didn't talk to Dr. Li, I was about to and glanced at her bio. When I finished reading it I had left my chara outside her lab and imagined the door opening and getting sucking into an auto-conversation. I nearly pulled a muscle grabbing the controller and hauling ass outta there.

Do you know some mods to reccomend me for another pc playthrough?
So far i have re- animated and FOOK.
Thanks in advance

Fellout for lighting and atmosphere, MMM for spawn variety and creatures and whatnot, Robco Certified for screwing around with robots, the DX armor retextures are okay, Classic Fallout Weapons gives enemies a bit more bite, the NMC terrain packs up the texture quality, can't really think of my others at the moment.

Fallout 3 is probably one of the weirdest games for me. I mean the writing sucks, the characters suck, the ending sucks, the AI sucks, the stats and progression systems are broken beyond belief, yet for some reason I still think of it as a decent to good game. I guess it must be the atmosphere. The level designers actually got off their asses for this one it seems like.

And I grew a new appreciation for the voice acting in this game when I played Oblivion...now there's a game that has no redeeming qualities. Utter trash from one end to the other. Almost frightened to try Morrowind for any length of time.

I still haven't finshed the Pitt, but I'd wait till your small guns or melee skill is high. Around lvl 10-12 is good for Operation Anchorage as you get Silent Running perk at lvl 12 to max out the Chinese Stealth suit.

Buy Broken Steel if you are finishing the main storyline or lvl capped at 20.

You can go in safe for a

an item I've gone for at level 1 a few times:
intelligent bobblehead
a quest that is more interesting than the typical shoot and loot:
from zimmerman, but then you may get lured into talking to Li for that quest.

They will both be waiting for you when you are eventually back in that room on family business as well.

Not the ones who did anything underground or inside. I am hoping that the new vegas game has no sewers or factories.

I think the graphics and particularly the detail of destruction in the environment are terrific but the animations (namely, the character's 3rd person animations) are horrendous.

Regarding my freezing problem...after completing the three dog quest it hasn't happened since...guess it was just one of those things.
You know it's really surprising it's still so bad. I think Bethesda is extremely talented. But there are just portions of the team not up to scratch where they need to trim the fat. Mainly the bug-testing, QA and the character modelers/animators. Rehire please for whatever your next project is Bethesda.

Grayman said:

Oh no I know that they reuse crap like crazy. But even the shitty sewers have their own little touches like the ghoul with his pet rad roaches, the skeletons in precarious positions, the weapons and notes, things like that, something that was sorely missing in Oblivion. I couldn't even play that game modded, the dungeons were so boring and talking to "people" was an exercise in masochism. If I want to go into a dungeon I should at least have SOME hope or expectation that it might actually be worth it.

But yeah Bethesda is...something special. They're obviously incompetent but it's some sort of incompetence that turns in on itself or something. I still can't understand how they broke Dogmeat as an NPC and made him as broken as Fawkes immediately after doling out a perk that was specifically for him dying. That's...definitely something special.

I'm itching to play this again. I don't feel like playing through on 360 again, so I could either buy it for PC now and get all the DLC separately (this is primarily what I want to play), or wait for the GotY version and buy it for either PC or PS3.

Get Broken Steel first for cap increase and new high level enemies, if you have finished the game already you don't have to start it yet, but will allow you roam freely though the wasteland and to do the other DLC's

Operation: Anchorage and The Pitt you can play at "lower levels"

Point Lookout and, I think Mothership Zeta, are for "higher level" characters (around level 17 if I remember correctly)

that's been the way I have been doing them

Pretty much. The only crucial part is getting Broken Steel first to increase the level cap. The rest is up to preference mostly.

Wtf..are you serious? Thats the most awesome part about it. Finding a random out in the middle of nowhere building or creepy underground lair and raping it from the inside out...it dosnt get better than that. Thats part of the exploration aspect of the game...

EDIT: I actually hope they have more inside structures, (like 50 story skyscrapers) underground passageways, and railway systems

Thanks guys.

Yeah, I bought Broken Steel first to increase the cap. Are Anchorage and The Pitt self contained enough that I could do them without having finished the main storyline? No spoilers or anything, right?

Yuo they are completely self contained. You can stumble upon them at anytime after you exit 101.

Skiptastic said:
Except skipping said storylines doesn't mean you can't ever go back and complete them. In fact, you can and I did.
Oh good. I don't know what Grayman was chatting about there but I spoke to Li immediately upon arrival of Rivet, I just played it as the game let me- I feel like I might have gotten more from reading the wiki or something. I occasionally browse a Wiki after I've explored a place fresh and find that I've missed like 5 items thinking fuck.

Will definitely check out Bloodlines next time I play.

I restarted my game awhile ago, and put the game down around lvl 9. Now I bought The Pitt, Broken Steel & Point Lookout.

The Pitt was normal difficulty, came out like lvl 11.
Then I started playing Point Lookout ( which is very cool ) at lvl 12, now I'm lvl 15. I finished most of the main quests here. It was a bitch sometimes but hey you're good with these kinds of games so no worries.

Yeah I'm pretty much in the same boat. Finished the game and got my Platinum Trophy, then traded it. I'll rebuy for ps3 GotY edition. I wonder if GotY version will set up as an entirely seperate trophy pool?

I need two more achievements to finish off the extras, Data Miner and Vault-Tech C.E.O. Unfortunately I'm fucked and can't get the Medicine bobblehead :( I've got a 107 hours logged in so far and have discovered all the locations on the map and I still haven't bought the DLC.

Dr Zhivago said:
I ended up going back to an old save to get all the bobbleheads (missed the one in Raven Rock).

That was one thing that really bugged me. Having only one shot to grab a couple bobbleheads. I don't keep a lot of saves so I was screwed for that one. I didn't really feel up to starting a whole new character after reaching the cap.

Beat the game a week ago (PC), went on the marketplace to check for the DLC prices... and I probably won't buy any.
Getting all the DLC would cost me more than what I paid for the game's LE. :(

Still have to do a lot of stuff though.

Just spent the weekend getting back into this game.

Played it when it first came out on my 360 until my TV shat itself. Then played it on PC until my video card blew up.

Third time lucky I guess, I'm now about 24 hours into it on a new TV and remembering why I loved playing it so much.

Also, I can't help but collect any Pre-War Money I see. Am I wasting my time?

Im pretty sure its weightless and you can sell it for a few caps. Definitely worth picking up.

Zeke said:
not sure but do collect pre-war books you can get a great return on them later in the game

Yeh I'm glad I kept all my Pre-War Books, got seriously rich when I cashed those in!

I tend to hoard stuff that I'm not sure about in the hope that one day it will be worth money...

Hopefully Pre-War Money becomes a collectors item in some future DLC or something :lol

like I said a few posts up, pre war money is worth caps (10 or so depending on your barter skill and such) and is weightless

Seriously?

Yes, unfortunately.

My 42-inch NEC plasma developed 3 massive white lines right down the middle (2 months out of warranty mind you).

And then my video card overheated and went pop. It was a fairly new 8800GT too.

But all good now, I have upgraded my TV, have all the DLC loaded and it's been worth the wait :D

Teknoman said:
Wow, thats a crazy string of bad luck.
Tell me about it.

And if it couldn't get worse, my harmon/kardon amp died only a few weeks ago. Just out of warranty, of course.

I'm starting to think I'm cursed.

Ok, just got this game on sat. Pretty good so far but the DLC is pretty expensive. Which ones are "don't miss"? Also, what is with everyone saying the game is really easy? I'm at lvl 6 and I feel like I am running out of ammo all the time, have yet to find any blueprints to make weapons and have yet to see alot of variety in the guns. At least I got a house near the start of the game.

Zeke said:
well just beat the game kind of let down by the ending :\

Yeah the original ending was terrible. I won't go into spoilers but I was let down by how nonsensical it was. I heard Broken Steel fixed it so I'll probably end up picking it up once I decide to go through the main quest again. For now I've just spent my 2nd playthrough doing any sidequests I missed before and wandering around the Capital Wasteland. I find it amazing how much more stuff there is and places to explore in the game world outside the main quest.

broken steel is definitely the one not to miss

operation anchorage is meh but gives you some cool stuff
the pitt is a bit better in gameplay over op anchorage and also gives pretty cool stuff

point lookout has some of the coolest content of the 4 and has the most fallout feel to it

Wait until you're near the end of the game. I hear some of the stronger Broken Steel enemies start spawning when you're around level 16 and can be quite challenging.

Started playing again this weekend. Amazing realizing just how much I missed last time. I've run into so much new content just exploring parts of the Wasteland I breezed through on my first playthrough.
