The Official Fallout 3 thread of post-apocalyptic proportions!

Need a suggestion:

Should I kill Roy Phillips or should I convince Tenpenny to let the ghouls live in the tower? The Ghoul Mask sounds like a really useful item, but will anything negative happen if I let the ghouls come in (besides eventually all residents being murdered by Roy and his gang)? Is the mask worth it?

iirc, I
killed Tenpenny and dropped his body off the tower, then went back later and let the ghouls in anyway.

Anyone know an easy way to get to Citadel? I need Power Armor training...

That's the brotherhood's place, right? There's a jumping glitch you can use to "stand" in the sky and clear the wall right after you start the game, dunno if it gets you the training though.

Look for the 30-minute speedrun, the guy does it in that.

It's been awhile since I played, but I don't think I used the power armor once I had the training. I want to say I had some kind of sneaking suit, but I don't remember.

Quick question:

Anyone know what gun the character is holding on the cover of Fallout 3?

Looks like a standard laser rifle. And to answer your previous question, if you have the Operation Anchorage DLC, you get the power armor training after completing the simulation and picking up the T-51b armor. That's the earliest way to get it without the glitch as far as I know.

So what are the good DLC's? I see some raise the level cap so those are no brainers.

I'm getting Anchorage for sure because I miss the gauss guns. And the Bozar but I don't know if they have that.

Broken steel extends the game so it never ends, get it first, and raises the level cap.

Anchorage is basically only good for the Gauss Gun.

Broken Steel is the first one to get, then it's a toss up between The Pitt or Point Lookout. I liked Point Lookout because the map was huge and you could just explore.

I finally got the T-51b Power Armor from Fort Constantine. Words cannot describe how good this armor looks. :D

By the way, around the area where Tara's body is, what is behind those 2 Very Hard locked doors? They require a Lockpick skill of 100 and I can't open them right now. :(

Finished now all the addons (GOTY version was cheap enough) and I'm back to 100% trophies for this game.

PS3 GOTY didn't receiveda patch yet... oh my god... this was the most buggy experience I ever had with a console game. The main game was ok in this regard (I finished it after the trophy patch though), but after the addons were installed it got pretty shitty, especially in the addon areas.
I think it's due to too much stuff being activated after all the addons are installed at once, because after I finished 3 addons the mothership and even the infamous Pit played better than the other 3.

I experienced freezes, lockups, really bad slow-mow framerate, buggy (main) quests (which are documented on fallout-wiki but not fixed yet...) I had to reload savegames and diverse little bugs.
I had to force restart the console at least once each time I played for a couple of hours.

The only bug I found entertaining was fast-traveling in the middle part of Point Lookouts map which caused lots of exploding and flying cars in the distance with a following rain of fragments and items (though every time it felt like the game would freeze).

had my fun with all the scenarios, especially as I could level again (though the new perks are mostly useless), on normal all 5 were enough to easily get me to level 30.
Though I'm really glad I didn't pay the price of the download versions, if only because they are very different in value which is not reflected in the price.

Is there anyway to repair the Gauss Gun? Or is it like the Winterized armor which is basically indestructible?

The Winterized Armor isn't indestructible unless you put it on a follower to wear.

I believe only Merchants can repair it (since you do not need another similar weapon).

Any must have mods I should download? Also, how do I change the default resolution?

As far as mods go, I'd recommend:
Project Beauty HD
DC Interiors Project
Level Cap Workaround & Level Cap Increaser Skill Workaround
Slower Item Degradation
Pre-War Book Titles
More Map Markers
Lucy West Companion
Classic Advanced Power Armor
Better Companions and Caravans

And, of course, the holy grail of Fallout 3 mods:
Dogmeat Leather Armor!!!

Also, I would warn you that some of these may break the balance of the game, but the game isn't very balanced to begin with. And I trust you're capable of making your own decisions.

Need someone to clear this up for me. I just got the
G.E.C.K. and I know the Enclave will take me away and any NPC companions will leave and will not be able to be re-hired until after The American Dream.
I gave my T-51b Power Armor to Star Paladin Cross some time ago (so that it doesn't take any damage) and I'm thinking about giving her some other stuff right now so I can make some room. Once I re-hire her, she will still have ALL of my stuff right?

People sure know how to ruin videogames!

Jesus, this game is a buggy piece of shit on PS3.

1st time playing: glitch at the G.O.A.T. exam where he never gives me my test. I just sit there.

reload save, everything is good. Play for awhile then quit.

Today, I try to reload my save and it stops at the loading screen. Can't even get into the XMB so I have to reboot the system.

I think I should have gotten Dragon Age... if only you could exchange open software for a different title.

There's also a pretty bag bug in the PS3 Oblivion GOTY. You become a vampire and have to stay a vampire for the rest of the game (the bug rears its head when you try to do the vampire cure quest). Unless the PS3 is part of the main base development, I would always buy the 360/PC version of a Bethesda game.

Though the 360/PC versions don't seem to be really better in this regard. If you look e.g. at the fallout wiki site, the list of bugs covers all systems and sometimes the bugs are the same for all 3 versions.
Though I think the PS3 version is the one with the performance problems in the addon areas. (plus: imo because of the live-data-streaming-installation instead of a common installation there can be additional performance issues).

IIRC one of the 360 addons wasn't even playable at its release?

I mean, I can accept some minor bugs etc. in this game (in contrast to your standard linear 8h action-game with less scripts combinations active etc.), but some of the occuring stuff and especially the lockups in the addons were just too much and easily ruined the experience sometimes. I kinda wonder how something like this can pass the QA of Sony&MS but other games sometimes don't.

btw. the G.O.A.T bug was there from the start:
"Occasionally just before the G.O.A.T when Mr Brotch tells Butch to "keep his eyes to himself" and Butch laughs, the dialogue will stop here and you cannot leave your seat (confirmed PC, PS3 and 360). This glitch only occurs when you sit in the second row seat on the right side of the classroom. "

Also happened to me when I bought the game at launch, but I would think something that common (story quest) and probably easy to fix (known cause) would have fixed by now with one of the patches?

Yeah, all their releases seem to have really bad bugs but Bethesda seem particularly ambivalent to the PS3. Their "just avoid the Vampire quest" solution to the PS3 Oblivion GOTY bug is just ridiculous.

Nice I was just coming in to ask about essential mods. I'll have the GOTY by the 3rd of January.

Playing through Fallout 1 and I have a strong urge to play through this game again (would be my 3rd time). Definitely Game of the Generation for me (so far).

Asking again; how do you change the resolution? I feel like such a noob for asking this, but you can't change it in 'settings' like you can for every other PC game I've EVER played... seems rather weird.

I quite often see pristine, Japanese-wannabes walking around in a atomic wasteland.

Though, I agree some of the mods look pretty cool.

...just exactly how often do you actually walk around an atomic wasteland to begin with?

So I'm
doing the quest Take It Back! and I'm currently talking to Colonel Autumn in the Rotunda. Should I kill him or should I talk him into leaving? My Speech is high enough that I can convince him to leave, but I'm not sure if I just want to let him go after all the shit he's pulled. Does he have any good loot to pick up after you kill him? Does letting him go change the game in any way?

Edit:
Both of his bodyguards have Gatling Lasers that I can use to repair mine. Ok, I'm killing this SOB!
:lol

Sorry for the double post, but something's wrong here.

I have the GOTY edition so the Broken Steel add-on is installed; when I activate the Purifier, it shows the ending, but when I click Continue in the main menu after the credits, it takes me back to the part right before I activate the Purifier. Am I doing something wrong here? It's supposed to let me keep playing. PS3 version btw.

Okay, nvm, I just took too damn long to do it. It works now.

need to use the launcher and click options (or just put the disc out then in again so it pops up)

also here is my old mods post if you really want to get a headache...

What kind of user interface mod is that? I like the font and other additions to the hud.

Darnified

Yup, all of the DLC is on Disc 2, like Oblivion's GOTY release -- complete with a check-list to pick and choose which content you want to install.

Just finished installing PC GOTY (with most of the user mods). The schematics for Dogmeat Leather Armor is soooo cyuuuuutteeee (and omg at being able to create an item carrier for Dogmeat <3333). I think I'll be using Dogmeat more this time around.

just wondering... If I put in all these mods... will it affect me receiving achievements? I say this because I wonder if I should just finish my vanilla version of fall out 3 first

Even if it does, you can manually activate any achievement via the terminal.

I just bought the GotY (ps3 version).

I already played 1/3 of the game in pc... but now, i want to finish it all.

I think i'm going to repeat my energy weapons character. Any tips?.

Crossing fingers to avoid game ruining bugs.

EDIT: can i choose to install de DLC or not?. Wich one is best... play all the game and then install de DLC?. I read somewhere that if i install everything, the game become more glitchy, and i will find some monster that it shouldn't be found.

Just finished my 2nd playthrough of Fallout 3 GOTY on PS3 (first time was on Xbox 360).
I never played the same game twice so I was afraid it was going to be boring.
Happy to say that it was an enjoyable experience despite playing through the same quests and the many bugs.

The only problems I had with the game were technical issues that I was surprised to run into in the PS3 version.
I have to say that this is the buggiest game I ever played in my life. I had constant freezes especially with the DLC content. Luckily most of the time they were quickly fixed by pressing the ps button. Often times after exiting a place and entering the capital wasteland, a dead corpse would fall out of nowhere, or I would have tons of enemies spawn at my location (I once had 3 giant albino radscorpions spawn at the same time.) Enemies would also stand still and would not react unless I shoot them first. I also had NPC characters who were suppose to fight alongside you for certain quests(i.e. the brotherhood of steel paladins) disappear forcing me to fight the battle all by myself.

Since I played through the GOTY edition once already on the xbox which was relatively bug free, I was able to notice what was wrong or missing with the ps3 version. To those who are thinking of playing this game on PS3 I strongly advise you to avoid it and play it on xbox or PC unless you have no alternative.
