Hi Guys.

Of course Im a huge gaffer and fellow musician/guitarist/teacher/recording engineer and producer. I would love to know your influences as you have progressed through your guitar playing life and how they have changed your playing?

Here is my influence story. Whats yours?

I started as a result of my father letting me use his acoustic guitar at the age of 17. I am completely self taught.

I was first influenced by Chet Atkins style guitar playing at first. Which is completely odd. I was not really into music at all so I had no idea that I could even play it. I was fascinated with the idea of playing multiple parts at the same time. So I started with fingerstyle acoustic guitar playing.

I then was introduced to Al DiMeola and became obsessed with proper picking technique and right hand ability. I took extra care to properly hold the pick and use solid scale and chord technique after being introduced to DiMeola.

During this time I also became a huge Neal Schon fan which turned my guitar playing focus to melody, and soloing with feeling. I am now a Schon guitar owner and I still think Neal is one of the best most heart felt soloists in rock history.

Its odd that right after that I would return to my origins and get into Michael Hedges, Don Ross and Billy Mclaughlin. All of these guys guitar playing changed the way I looked at an acoustic guitar. I got into a lot of 2 hand tapping and of course hammer on and pull off rhythm and lead layers.

My father introduced me thereafter to Steve Vai and Joe Satriani. I would say these guys influenced me to get better in my pyro technics so to speak. Tremelo, slides and all the cool sound effects you could do with guitar.

There after I got into metal. My guitar buddies showed me Meshuggah, Fear Factory, and some others. Dino Cazeres and Fredrik Thorendthal I became obsessed with complex rhythm and ultra fast triplet, quad sections of course. My rhythm technique drastically improved at this point. Finally I found Threat Signal's Kyle Mcknight as my last big influence. Love his feel and creativity and melody.

Since then I would say that these above have influenced my playing the most.

Im now into Threat Signal, Meshuggah, Blessed by A Broken Heart, Fear Factory, Divine Heresy, Living Sacrifice, Breach the Void, Chronicles of Israfel, Paul Wardingham, Tony Macalpine, Cog, Karnivool, Disarmonia Mundi, and so many more.

I would say finally that after I have studied guitar and played for over 13 years of my life. Its amazing as it is evolving in the music world. Yet its still the same as it was so long ago. I will play till I die. Its my life and love. I love to teach it to others and share it with anyone who will listen.

What about you ?

All in all I try to maintain a sort of chaotic, idiosyncratic style of playing that I balance with some more structured improvisation, hence the Jazz influences. Whether it actually works is another story, but at least I try
