Remember before the release of Halo 3, they were saying they'll command more attention to Halo 3 (they have) and release more for it? In my view, I think there should be MORE maps on Halo 3 than Halo 2. And Halo 2 finished up with 23 (?) maps. Halo 3 has 17 (?) maps right now. Counting the next group makes it up to 20 maps. So I think there still should be 1-2 more DLC maps after this summer release...fin said:Rumor is Gearbox is doing the next Halo game. ;|
I hope Bungie doesn't stop releasing maps. I can see maps being a lucrative business till the next Halo game. 3 maps every 3-4 months for the next 2 years works for me.
I really liked Halo 3's intro too. I didn't care for Halo 2's intro all that much. Nothing really stood out, I guess.Falagard said:It was? I thought Halo 3's was much better. Especially with the Blomkamp live action stuff leading up to it.

Yeah. At the time it was a complete mind-fuck that Bungie was suddenly telling the story from the Covenant perspective. It was fascinating and, in retrospect, ballsy. A lot of Halo 2's story telling was similarly unconventional.the disgruntled gamer said:Nothing stood out about the Arbiter's trial, or seeing High Charity for the first time, or catching a glimpse of the destroyed Installation 04?
That's strange. I watched that and got so hyped for playing the game, it was insane. I was fascinated immediately by this look into the inner-workings of the Covenant.

Blueblur1 said:You're kidding, right? There's no set up, no retelling of what previously happened. Hell, its not even believable that the Chief is "dead." I could write a better opening in less than 500 words.
EDIT: Laughtrey, I know what happens in Halo 1. My point is that Halo 2's opening serves as a better introduction because touches upon what happened in Halo 1, adds to it by providing the Covenant point of view and sets up both the Arbiter's and the Chief's stories. Perfect for someone who has never played Halo before.
Halo 3's opening does not do any of this. It is inferior in terms of content. You hear ominous Cortana quotes, watch the Chief crash, get up and start walking through the jungle. Its ridiculously short and a terrible introduction. It only serves the Halo hardcore like us. If Bungie did intend to make Halo 3's story less complicated then they made a major mistake by not including a proper intro for new players.
That would be AWESOME. In that case I'd expect 2 more map packs, maybe three if we're lucky. I'm expecting Bungie's next game in 2010.Ramirez said:Once upon a time in an interview some where, Frankie (I think, maybe someone else from Bungie) said that by the time Halo 3's DLC was done you'd have a hard time remembering what the initial map selection was, I hope they stick to this plan.

It was from a Weekly Update in December.Ramirez said:Once upon a time in an interview some where, Frankie (I think, maybe someone else from Bungie) said that by the time Halo 3's DLC was done you'd have a hard time remembering what the initial map selection was, I hope they stick to this plan.
He said there was a guy with the GT "xxjuicesxx" on the other team!
We're playing the next batch of DLC. This first trio has been very well received. Eventually your Halo experience will be so swollen and engorged that you'll have a hard time even remembering what the original map selection was. In the future, we'll be bringing you more fully custom built maps and they may include one or more of the following:
Symmetrical arena maps for competitive play.
Returning classics demanded by the fans.
Crazy new stuff you never expected.
Unusual maps with lots of potential for interesting game types.
Graphically spectacular settings.
More Forge objects to use on new maps.
Surprises.

IAWTP. Why would you jump into a SEQUEL and expect the entire story to be explained to you? If you care so much, go look it up. There's lots of cool shit on the internets.Ramirez said:If people honestly cared THAT much about what happened in the previous Halo games they would have either played the first two games, or simply read a summary on the internet in any of the thousand places you could find one.
There's some kind of glitch that doesn't allow parties to look at film clips. Other than that, have no idea.Sean said:Why do film clips take ages to start?
A five second film clip, we have to wait for like 3 minutes in the black-screen "Preparing..." step. It's probably faster to just start the entire clip and fastforward through it.
If I had to guess, I'd say Monday so it goes up while people are at work. Love to be wrong though. Ranked BTB double XP. Mmmmm.Ramirez said:Do the playlist updates go up tonight?

You'll be surprised to hear I agree with this. I'm not asking them to deliver more exposition and longer cutscenes, or to sit the player down and explain backstory like the Forerunners/MB's betrayal etc. I think going the Metal Gear Solid route, as someone suggested, is a terrible idea that would annoy both the average player and someone like me, who thinks cutscenes are the laziest form of storytelling in videogames short of a wedge of text.Cocopjojo said:You guys gotta remember, this game sold (and they knew it would) a ton of copies, to all ages. They couldn't put that stuff in the game. Well, they could've but the story would have been even more confusing. Remember, most people don't even know what the Halo rings do. Imagine them trying to understand a telepathic Gravemind that can communicate with its disparate parts.
What map is undeniably linked to the Smuggler name and the clues given by Bungie? Of course if you are not a retarded baboon you will know its LOCKOUT!!!
Now to my proof. Smuggler. Just look at the name. Spelled backwards its Relggums. Starting to see the connections? Now look at Lockout spelled backwards. Toukcol. Am I the only one that thinks its weird. When you spell each of these backwards, they end in the same letter they start with when you spell them forward. Try telling me there are no connections now.
That is taken directly from the weekly update. Lets start at the top. "Containment Failure" Clearly this means they were going to remake the map Containment, but failed

I was wondering when pictures of the retarded-looking Mongoose that you were driving around Valhalla would start showing up in here.. :lol
Sorry I had bail so soon tonight guys, but I was starving. Had to get something to eat before it got too late.
Your lose man, it was good times. Whiteboy passed out ingame (may still be slouching in front of an idle blue Halo menu). Omlet tried on some flight, recognized its awesomeness, was overwhelmed and returned to that POS recon thing. Oh yeah, and we continued to have our way with Ram.Thermite said:Sorry I had bail so soon tonight guys, but I was starving. Had to get something to eat before it got too late.

When I talked about Half-Life 2 and Bioshock, I was talking about how those games -- which are both first person shooters -- manage to present information about their setting, and evoke emotion and player response, through their immediate environments. So we learn about the downtrodden of City 17 by fleeing through their apartments, hearing them whisper to one another etc. In Bioshock the average gamer can walk into a room, scour it for plasmids or ammo, and then leave, without noticing the dead couple embracing on a bed, surrounded by sleeping pills. This is story told through the gameworld, through the player's experience; they don't have to suffer through clunky exposition or cutscenes because this kind of storytelling is immediate and mise-en-scène. The closest thing Halo 3 has is a Brute holding a Marine in the air as we approach (and this is repeated several times), or the Marine who seems to have been driven mad by the Flood's arrival.
Why not have a level, or part of a level, based in a living environment, with a disturbed canteen and hastily abandoned bedrooms, and a Grunt playing with a child's toy in one of these and muttering to itself? Why not have the Chief wander (during a quiet moment, while some story exposition is being delivered over his headset) through a hangar or hall of refugees -- women and children -- who are huddled together in corners but stand up at his approach, and comfort one another as a result? It's as easy as having a mother and daughter seen through a window running hand in hand in the distance. Hell, just have an evacuation broadcast looping forever on a TV screen. Give us some sense that people live on this planet, and that the 'mankind' that is repeatedly trumpeted in cutscenes and over the headset is worth fighting for, that earth "will never be the same".
This in-game storytelling is so effective -- and doesn't impinge on the average player who just wants to shoot at all -- and yet it is almost entirely absent from Halo 3. I wanted to care about the earth I was the supposed 'saviour' of. Bungie gave me no reason to. When Hood shouts that Rtas just glassed half a continent, the game has given me no sense of what that should mean. The comic 'Second Sunrise over New Mombasa' gives me a strong sense of 26th century human life, and its appalling that the game does not. Apologists will say, "But it's in the comic, for the fans, if they go looking!" I say that whatever about details of plot and character, the emotional core of your story should be at the core of the experience.
People make so many excuses for the stories in these games, and for how they're told; I'm guilty of it too in defending them to friends. But I'm not asking for more detail: I don't want Bungie to tell the player the specifications of the Shadow of Intent, or explain how a slipspace conduit works, or where the Spartans came from. I just want better detail, and more relevant detail, and detail that invests the player -- yes, even the average player -- in the world. Give them as many reasons to shoot as you can, and make them care.
