thats hot, why do they call em skull mods though? doesnt matter i guess. cool feature, one i'll likely never use since i wont play campaign, but cool feature nontheless.

they were in halo 2 as well but in a very useless form

the easiest one to find was the no hud in outskirts near the beginning on the rooftop
(it's an oddball skull)
thing is... once you got it you couldn't deactivate it and there was many littered around the game

and once you turned off your console it wouldn't be there when you restarted

so they were neat but a pretty big pain in the ass

Just saw the museum ad.

Clever, but pretty offensive to actual veterans, I think.

David Jaffe is that you?

I thought it wasn't anymore offensive than any other war movie (based on real events or not) that tries to evoke the same sentiments. I mean if the HALO Museum commercial is offensive, than John Wayne needs to be dug up and crucified for offensively simplistic protrayals of war.

I don't understand how people can find the ad offensive??? I thought it showed a point of view that not many of us here have thought about. It was a great atmosphere builder, and I look forward to the next video.

Jaffe was the one who defended the game.

luke... would having a fun skull effect your points (negatively?) because if there's skulls like the one in halo 2 where headshots make a plasma explosion... wouldn't that essentially make the game easier? or do you just not allow fun ones and difficulty ones to be activated at the same time?

Added the some of the 1up screens to the OP, and the link to the gallery.

I would add Luke's textbook-like descrption of Skulls, but I'm running out of space for delicious text. But thanks for the detailed description (and hints!) of them. Unlike Halo 2's, I'll be searching for these guys.

I dunno, I just felt uncomfortable. This isn't a film after all. It's a television commercial for a videogame.

It just seemed to hit too close to the mark on appearing like some sort of veteran's rights/appreciation campaign ad.

I don't post on here often (been reading for years), but I would like to say THANKS GhaleonEB for all the work you are putting in to this thread.

More cracking the whip behind Tieno's back then.

No, the "fun skulls" do not affect your points negatively. Only the Campaign scoring enhancing skulls have positive and negative affects on your Campaign score. And yes, both kinds of skulls can be activated at the same time, once found.

I asked this in the other thread, but what the hell.

On one hand, there's the ad, which is a fictional imagining of survivors of the war in Halo 3. On the other, there's the fictional soldiers who die in Halo 3. How is the former offensive to actual veterans, while the latter is not offensive to actual soldiers in, say, Iraq? In both cases soldiers are being used fictionally, but some die and some live. Some are in a game, the other is in a commercial for the game. And in the commercial, it's made clear that this soldier fought bravely and has been honored all his life for doing so.

In a commercial. About a guy who is in a video game, set in a made-up science fiction universe 500 years in the future.

Needless to say, I don't understand how it's offensive.

The wait got bad when GhaleonEB made this thread.
I caved in to pressure. Were it up to me, the OP would say "yay boobies" and we'd be off and running.

.....or ones that are more easter egg fun times skulls -- like the Grunt skull that makes you pee with laughter.........

How can you tease us so. I so can't wait to find out which skull that is and use it. Sounds pee inducingly fun.:D

The skull system reminds me a lot of GoldenEye's modifiers; however, in GoldenEye you unlocked them by doing various speed runs and completing a level on certain difficulties. It took me forever to unlock everything in GoldenEye.

i'm glad halo 3 has unlockables ... halo 2 had only one true unlockable and it didn't work for a lot of people (doh!)

Any idea how huge the battles will be in H3? Seems like a couple of brutes every encounter judging from the screenshots.

In Sierra 117, a couple of Brutes every encounter is reasonable, since its a training mission. You've yet to see a Brute Pack, though. 13 days.

Half a brute pack is 10 brutes.

Packs aren't quantifiable just by numbers, actually. It's a set of Brutes working together, usually helmed by a particular class of Brute. The numbers can vary situationally and the size of the encounter space absolutely plays a part in the size of the Pack.

Movies have fictional ceremonies with fictional veterans morning friends lost in fictional battles. Do you think those films are offensive?

For me, it's the tone of the ad. It was obviously their intention to match the mood of a veteran's appreciation campaign ad, or something close to it. While that in itself isn't offensive, I think the ad takes too long to reveal itself as an ad for a videogame set in a fictional universe, especially if you're only half paying attention or aren't familiar with the Halo franchise.

I'm just relaying my first gut reaction here. My Halo loving, headshotting self is saying "awesome!" but the rest of me feels kind of uncomfortable seeing what appears to be a WW2 aged veteran realistically and emotionally recounting a fictional battle in order to sell a videogame.

Movies aren't commercials.

http://www.bungie.net/images/Games/Halo3/Screenshots/11583-3_out-3rd-tc_018.jpg

That screen is labeled "Chief vs Half a Brute Pack" on Bungie.net. I count nine of them and some Grunts.

And before we know it, we’re back in the familiar instinctive, free-flowing combat that makes the Halo series so distinct among first person shooters. But though it feels familiar, it’s not the same. The environments are more expansive than ever before, and they’re spanned by fighting enemies and allied forces. Tens of Brutes and Grunts bearing varieties of armor and weaponry are visible and active at any one time, attacking both you and your fellow marines. The scale is immediately evident, and remarkable.

This thread is great and it came at the right time. Basically, seeing this thread made me realize Halo 3's release is almost upon us.

Thanks for the delicious insight, Luke.

As for GameStop, I'm still puzzled by the Halo 3 tournaments several of the Miami stores plan to hold on the 23rd. And the morons at store I pre-ordered don't have a clue how things are gonna go down. I don't even think that store has a General Manager. Anyway, I will be hassling the boneheads this weekend when I get my Halo 3 console.

Wow. New screens look amazing. =O

Not really. I thought he said Microsoft bought Halo's fervor. As if we all enjoy Halo because we are brain dead consumers. Frankly, as a fan of this series, he offended me.

I posted waaaaaay back about it. It's not street dated, don't know what their problem is (bestbuy.com shows an estimated arrival date of 9/12-9/18, and amazon says it's shipping tommorrow). I picked it up Sunday at Gamestop. I never head the original wireless headset so I can't directly compare, but supposedly they're better quality than the regular wireless headsets, at least according to someone at bungie according to someone in this thread :P. Also it only comes with a USB charger, not an a/c adapter like the regular one (apparently) does.
Eh, they probably want to sell it as a package deal to some poor misguided customers that think they can only play online with that exact headset.

I'll keep looking around, I'm sure there's some smaller chains that wont mind selling it to me.

And thanks for the impressions by the way, I heard the exact same thing regarding the quality of it which is why I've chosen to wait to get this one instead of rushing out to get the older (less kick ass) model.

He said he thought the games were good, but he didn't understand the fuss over the story. The "bought" comment was a throwaway comment. Regardless of that, however, he defended the game in the following segment. You shouldn't be any more offended by his comments than veterans should be offended by the ad.

someone who went to the imax showing yesterday on MLG forums said when they were looking around for the saved film that went missing... they accidently flipped to the MP map screen... roughly 13-15 maps were on the list

also saw 10 slots for spartan / elite variants

Ok. I just thought it was shitty for a Sony employee to try to downplay Halo 3 two weeks before release.

I've long speculated in my head that perhaps the number of MP maps was going to be about 4-5 more than what Halo 2 shipped with. This is just based off how the game has more of everything in every other department...
