Let's not turn this into a H3 vs KZ2 thread of sillyness.
Better to let it run its course than to fight it.

Personally, I'm intrigued by KZ2 and I really want to try it, but I don't have the money or desire to spend $400+ on a PS3. Somebody mail me your PS3 and copy of KZ2 and I'll get it back to you in a few weeks :P

Holy Jesus at the Killzone hate. I'd say you're doing it wrong, seriously it isn't that bad. I think the main reason why the controls are sloppy is the controller. The stick on the PS3 controller have too much travel and too little resistance. It literally makes my hands ache.
It's both, me thinks.

My Impressions of the Maps

Orbital - Good for AR and BR starts. This is probably my favorite map aesthetically, most notably the dedications to Tobias Shaw and Wallace Fujikawa: the creators of humanity's slipstream technology. I can't describe them, but the markers that glow the color of each respected team are awesome to look at, and the view of a section of Earth is absolutely lovely. The layout of this map has been the hardest to get down out of any Halo map I've ever played. That's not necessarily a bad thing, but it would influence your enjoyment out of objective games if you haven't played much of it. Speaking of objective games, I think they work really well on this map (specifically CTF and Assault). If you're playing with teammates who don't know the layout, objective games can get quite frustrating, though. I haven't had a chance to play one sided CTF or Assault, but I suspect they work well.

Assembly - My favorite Covenant-themed Halo map (this includes Halo 2). As with Orbital, the aesthetics of this map are phenomenal. On the "barges" on the walkways leading towards the middle, you can see Covenant hieroglyphs change (not in any particular order as far as I can tell). The skybox in this is among the best I've seen, certainly one of the best (if not the best) of any Halo multiplayer map. As with Orbital, AR and BR starts work well on this map. With regards to objective games: I think Mult-Flag CTF works alright on the map, but I think that one-sided (or neutral) Assault would probably work better. I wouldn't know, though, because I haven't played another type of objective other than Multi-Flag CTF.

SandBox - This maps real strength lies within the community, but I'll comment on the versions I've played so far. The lighting, as we could see from the pictures, is superb, and I love the night setting. What came as a surprise to me is that the planet in the sky had rings -- something that I couldn't tell from the pictures. The default layout is really good, but despite how much I love the AR, BR starts should be required for the default variant. The line of sights are just too long to do anything useful with the AR. With the way the default variant is laid out, the Needler can be a deadly weapon if used properly. As with Orbital, both CTF and Assault work well on this map.
I'm not sure how I feel about Tundra. I've only played SWAT on it, and I think my dislike for it is mainly stemming from that gametype. I'd be interested in trying it out in other gametypes.
I think I may like the Sandbox version of Grifball more than the Foundry version.

Oh, and Bladed: nice remake.

Hey thanks for the kind words everyone. I put a fair bit of time into it (restarted once due to a major oversight on the first attempt) but got sidetracked playing Halo Wars today(cool game). It should be finished tomorrow (with smaller bases and workable spawns) and I'll put the new version up for download then. Maybe I'll get top play a game on it too :lol

And now, to sleep...

Some reason I can't decide whether to do my Lab Work, play Halo3, or Killzone2. It's a really hard decision considering I have class in 9 hours and I haven't started on my post-lab report or my pre-lab questions. HALP

I've entered in pretty much all the giveaways I've been able to find to no avail =(
My last hope is the daily OXM one.

Awesome, congrats. How are they letting winners know, email?

David PM'd my 1up account. Also provided his gamertag and how to get in on the GameNight thing which I'll probably try to do too.

Uggggh I hate objective and sniper games in Doubles. I always lose them (with the exception of flag which comes up super rarely).

I played six games tonight and objective games came up for half of them, plus one sniper game =/

I sort of had a strange vision of a map I'd really like to forge on Sandbox... I think I'm going to start on it tomorrow. I'm very excited to finally have an interesting idea. Does anyone know of a really good guide to forge measuring and interlocking objects?

Also, I wish the terrain on the main level of Sandbox was symmetrical, the outskirts are a nice place for a turret, but it'd only work at one base.

No.

I guess you didn't play much Halo CE.
I guess you haven't played much 5v5 on Cold Storage. Even 4v4 is cramped. Spawn, grenade, die, spawn, grenade, die. Rinse and repeat till 50 kills.

Yeah, if memory serves, Chill Out was one of the "2-8" player maps. I almost always played it 1v1 or 2v2.

Just played a BR slayer match on Orbital against vhfive and some other people. At some point early on in the match I overheard one of his teammates yelling, "I thought you said these guys were bad!" :lol

Priceless

You're probably thinking of Scooter who played with my gamertag when he visited Bungie. :D Nelson's a god at Rock Band though.

Congrats on winning the 1up contest.

I don't know who at the 1up offices sucks but I know David was said to be a good player. I remember an old 1up Yours where everyone was joking about how people were hired based on how good at Halo they were. :lol Good episode.

Oh and David, are you guys done giving out the 1up codes? I'd like to know just so I don't have to go to sleep thinking about whether or not I'm going to get one before Game Night tomorrow.

edit: just read the game night story on 1up. Everyone who won should have received a code by now. : (

They've been given out. If you didn't get a PM in your 1UP box you didn't win.

If anyone has any good Sanbox levels that we should be showing tomorrow night PM the info to me.

Dumbass Chill Out was primarily a 2v2 map on Halo:CE

Yet 4v4 worked as well, if not better. I never played it 5v5, but I imagine it'd still be fun.

I should mention we only played without motion sensor, and I believe MLG is the only playlist that does that in Halo 3.

Gotta love quitters - funny to run into fellow Halo GAFfers online on the other team, and then my lousy teammates quit out for no reason too - oh well...

I wasn't saying too much because I have a sore throat as well...

You're GV David right? That was one hell of a Neutral Bomb match we had there on Sandbox - you guys almost tied it up with us at the very end too - what a battle...

Yeah, 4v4 played better if you didn't mind the whole uber frame-rate slowdown when everyone decides to spam invis room with 4 consecutive grenades and rush the teleporter. Yeah, I guess you can say it played better with 8 people.

That was a straight up battle of attrition.

My throat was so damn sore right now and I had it all day, but I couldn't stop myself from calling out your locations to my teammates from beginning to end - you guys work good together, and I was lucky that my teammates called out back to me - you guys really know how to put the pressure on a team...

Going to bed now, but when I wake up, I'm definitely going to watch that match again - my tag was DXLR8R by the way...

When you're playing system link or on XBConnect, a minor amount of slowdown was no worse than a little lag.

I briefly put up a bunch of pics of this map the other day, but then took them down because I wasn't really satisfied with it. I'm pretty happy with it now.

I've semi-jokingly called this Bifocal (Beta!) for now. (File Share) Basically, it's a two-level map set in the Sandbox basin, with the second level accessible for vehicles. I thought it might be interesting to have map where ground based vehicles are going around on two distinct planes.

Right now it's only set up for Slayer and CTF. I'd love some input before I work on the other gametypes, make sure there are no major changes needed.

The map is symmetrical across the center line (short side).

Bifocal1.jpg

Rear of the base. The vehicle assortment is the same as default Sandbox, which I thought worked well. A Chopper, Warthog and two Mongoose. The base has plasma grenades and SMGs, a power drain on one side and the regen on the other. The missile pod is on the other side of the inward facing ramps, in an outward facing nook.

Bifocal2.jpg

Heading up to the top, on the first corner there's a bubble shield, Brute Shot and Needler. Since the last (short lived) post of the map I completely redid the top level. I wanted a balance of cover, long sight lines and lanes for vehicles to drive through at high speed. It doesn't look like a lot, but I spent a crazy amount of time testing this for both cover and drivablity.

Bifocal3.jpg

Running along the outside edge is risky, but it's a straight shot across the top level.

Bifocal4.jpg

The risk of course is in getting knocked off; that's why the Brute Shot is up there. Getting to the other side at full speed is fun though.

Bifocal5.jpg

Bifocal6.jpg

On foot, the cover on the top.

Bifocal.jpg

Heading to the laser in the center.

Bifocal8.jpg

Moving to the bottom level, I wanted closer quarters combat. Three platforms, the center forward, provide cover on the approach. Leaning against the outside of the side stone platforms to either side are a rocket launcher and shotgun. The center has the active camo. Wrapping around the center are two "m" shaped tunnel sets, the exits all pointing inward.

Bifocal11.jpg

Sword in the center, right below the laser on the top level.

In addition to the two large ramps, there's a sneakier way up on either side in the center.

Bifocal9.jpg

Bifocal10.jpg

With active camo, you can head back up top and approach the base from there, or sneak through the bottom level.

That's about it. It's fun to drive around on, which is about all I can test solo. :)

One side has an overshield on it and is a bit wider, otherwise the sides are symmetrical as well.

damn, I wanna play halo right now but there's like no one on : ( I guess I can get my ass kicked in Street Fighter IV some more

I bought Killzone 2 from Amazon earlier and then I wanted to fucking smash something when I found out New Egg is selling it for cheaper. It was already in the shipping proccess no more than 15 minutes later so I couldn't cancel... Fuck. Anyway, any Halo GAF guys who haven't purchased the game yet should buy it from there since it's probably the cheapest you can get a new copy.

Damn, I feel stupid... I did see the 1up post but I did not give much thought to the line about sending the codes out before Tuesday. I figured they were going to give them out during the stream.
