It's also in the OP. I keep that updated, and list the most recent updates at the top of the post so there's no mystery about what has been added and where to find it.

Does anyone look at that? Should I bother updating it?

I do! I do!

I knew the commercial would be coming out while I was still stuck on the 101 on my way to work this morning, so first thing I did was check the OP when I came on.

I took that to mean that arming the gernade is a teaser to a much bigger moment in the story. That's how MC dies perhaps?
I think you may be reading too much into this. Frankie has said before that the ad agency (McCann Erickson) did not know the details of the storyline, they had just created the "Believe" campaign on it's own.

Plus, the average person who views this on TV is not going to say to themselves, "Wait a minute, he said he was shooting a turret from a flipped-over Warthog. That's not physically possible!"

siamesedreamer said:
That's what I'm thinking. It may be in reference to MC doing something with a grenade that turns the tide in the Earth invasion battle. I don't think it directly relates to his death per se...

Yeah. I'm hoping it's one of those "do you remember where you were when this major event occured" type things, like where you were when you heard about 9/11 or ... for older people, the Kennedy assassination. Otherwise it doesn't make sense... it's a pretty stupid thing for an agency to write into the commercial on a whim.

Well they did say it is from a battle in the game.

Fair enough, but I wouldn't expect a mention of a single particular grenade toss to have any relevance directly related to a major point in the game.

All of the semantic arguments - about "the" versus "MC" should be thought of wth some extra context - some of which will become apparent in the (ad) campaign.

1. The Chief is being remembered by a non-native english speaker, and Master Chief is technically an adjunct to the Marines from a different branch of the armed forces - the Spartan Program - and he's the last Spartan.

2. It is just an ad.

Well, that changes things alittle bit. I may be reading into things alittle bit, but maybe the ad agency knew the general story line of Halo 3, but not specifics, perhaps they were told the ending or major events...

On second thought. Why the hell would bungie, one of the most controlling game devs out there, allow a marketing company to make an ad campaign for its biggest game ever without any input from Bungie or MS. That doesn't make a whole lot sense. I would think bungie would be closely involved in the creation of Halo 3's ad campaign.

Thank's for ending that discussion.

Not to halo fans. It's an insight to your mind.

And the ad agency STILL doesn't know any plot details beyond what's out there already. This is all atmosphere, feeling, mood.

It is designed to involve you in the feelings of these Marines, and the human cost of the events in the game.

Music after all, needs no lyrics to elicit a visceral response from the soul.

So that battle is not from a battle in the game?

Asked before. Is it the same battle as the one shown in "starry night"?

Congrats. It does the job very well. And in a very original way for a videogame, i think.

Three or four of the recent juniors may have registered just to spoil the game and get banned.

And my offer as a spoiler shield still stands *koff koff*
Maybe you should pm one of the mods?

I have to agree with this. The dialogue makes "Master Chief" sound more like a name than a title which is completely wrong.
It's not his name?

I unno, space robot warrior god decends from out of orbit and rescues your ass from aliens. Do you ask for his proper name or call him what everyone else does? It's the same deal with Sarge. Who the hell calls him Johnson?

This spoiler thing is getting scary, what if one of those new members creates a topic, with the title in CAPS saying some sort of spoiler, we're pretty much screwed then.

"MASTER CHIEF IS A TRANNY"

See, you cant unsee it :( Im thinking of bailing out here in a few days, and i'll come back when i finished campaign.

They have to be approved first, which is done in batches. Just because they've registered does not mean they are in. But yeah, time to be careful.

Any official response or source in regards to my question? I haven't seen this covered anywhere.

Are you serious? MP has 4-player splitscreen? I was afraid it was throughout because all the videos (even the Leipzig Games Convention ones) only showed two-player splitscreen.

I've eliminated the problem of thread title spoilers for myself, I just visit the Halo 3 thread. However, I was doing this anyway before spoilers were a threat, hehe.

The Inquirer has a picture of the line ALREADY IN PLACE outside the Metreon in San Francisco. Yes, there aer a bunch of people on the street, two weeks early, to ensure that they get a copy of Halo 3 as soon as they possibly can. (If I were that hardcore, I'd move to New Zealand - they'll get it before EVERYONE.) And won't those guys need to go home and take a shower before they can actually play? Defeats the purpose, doesn't it? Update: Luke Smith points out that they're NOT waiting for the game, they're waiting for a chance to play Halo 3 on an IMAX screen. My bad. (Well, The Inquirer's bad.)

CORTANA IS A TRANNY would have been much more devastating.

Of all the people that would respond, I get the best. Thanks a million, Ferrex. My Halo 3 launch LAN plan is safe. :D :D :D I love Bungie.

What kind of spoilers could there be? Master Chief dies? I mean what else would be shocking? The only spoiler-worthy thing from Halo 2 was that you play as the Arbiter and maybe the abrupt "ending." I mean it's an action game not an RPG.

I like the tone the "Museum" ad struck, and how it was executed a great deal. As an ad, designed to sell a product, I don't think it's that great but I'm not exactly in a position to judge it from that perspective. I have been and always shall be your friend an advocate for using the game to sell the game. Gears of War's tv spot was high-concept and brilliant - haunting, beautiful and just plan compelling. And it used the game to do it.

I'd still rather that be the approach here, but for what it is, it is very well done. On that note, apparently others are finding it very effective as well.

http://arstechnica.com/journals/thumbs.ars/2007/09/12/stunning-halo-3-museum-trailer-avaliable-now

Given that Halo 3 is getting the Hollywood treatment, it's no surprise that the first of two videos premiered exclusively by Yahoo Videos this week is stunning. Entitled "Museum," the simple trailer shows absolutely no gameplay but operates on a completely different level by creating an uncanny atmosphere that strives to give Halo 3 a more "real" feel.

[snip trailer description]

It's a very powerful trailer, and one that reminds me of the Gears of War commercial; both are in startling contrast to what you might expect of a game trailer. Now I'm really looking forward to the second trailer, "Believe," which will hit on Friday.

If this and the final piece garner that kind of reception more widely, I can see it being really effective.

Someone at HBO posted a simple GreaseMonkey spoiler blocker. It's not going to do much against a concentrated SPOILER ASSUALT, and would probably be annoying as hell in everyday browsing, but it will be good for avoiding someone just spamming something like spoilers in thread titles.

Believe it or not a lot of us really care about the Halo story and don't want it spoiled. YMMV, but don't assume that there are not others who wish to experience the game fresh the first time through.

It's an action game set in a fictional universe that many have come to love, with a rather strong story element that many are keen on.

Every Halo game has a had a major plot twist, from the flood to the arbiter to gravemind. From all early indications, Halo 3 has even more twists and turns.

not bad, but I think I'll take the chance.

Added the small teaser screen MS sent Gamersyde to the OP, in case anyone missed it.

Here's the the full PR on the ad campaign. A LOT of new details.

A Hero Must Rise. Believe.

Landmark “Halo 3” Marketing Campaign Debuts; Ushers in Game’s Launch on September 25

Every so often individuals are called upon to rise above themselves and act in a selfless manner – to help, to protect, to defend those in need. We call these people, who rise up in the face of great adversity, heroes. One such individual’s story is about to be told worldwide. On Sept. 25, “Halo 3’s” epic hero Master Chief will rise once again – he’ll face seemingly insurmountable odds with the entire fate of the galaxy riding on his shoulders.

In memory of this hero, and helping build to what promises to be the largest entertainment launch in history on Sept. 25, a series of dramatic and evocative communications elements, created by McCann San Francisco, T.A.G., AKQA, and Microsoft Global Marketing will offer a stirring look at the “Halo” universe and Master Chief.

The first of the films, entitled “Museum,” premieres today on http://games.yahoo.com and provides consumers everywhere with a reason to “Believe” in the amazing stories and action within the Halo experience, bringing the epic battles to life in the style of a museum “diorama.”

Certain to catch the imagination of audiences around the globe, the ads are unlike any video game advertising ever created, and offer a powerful look at the world of “Halo”. Uniquely, the campaign experience does not focus on “Halo 3’s” graphics or gameplay, but instead looks at the themes that lie at the heart of the tale that spans the entire “Halo” trilogy: duty, sacrifice, and most importantly, heroism.

Through the eyes of celebrated Hollywood creature designer Stan Winston, known for his landmark work on Aliens and Jurassic Park;, as well as New Deal Studios, model creators for Spiderman 3, 300 and Superman Returns, and acclaimed director Rupert Sanders, people will experience a dramatic and moving look at mankind’s struggle against our future enemy, the fierce warrior force known as the Covenant.

The central element that much of the integrated marketing campaign centers on is a painstakingly accurate replication of a key moment from a climactic battle set in the "Halo" universe. At over 1200 square feet, reaching a height over 12 feet above the ground and with each handcrafted human and Covenant figure standing eight to twelve inches high, the diorama was large enough to fill an entire studio.

Filming the Experience

Shooting the campaign took several days as the individual soldier's stories were told, and as the camera spanned the landscape, finally resting on the mountain top where Master Chief appears to have been conquered by the Covenant enemy…or so it would seem. Viewers quickly realize that there is much more of the story that’s yet to be told – and the game will tell all.

The story of the diorama and the battle that day has been told through films that will be shown in 27 countries around the world on television, in cinema and on the web. But the Halo 3 experience is much larger than that, with future testimonial films depicting soldiers’ third-party accounts of their experience in the battles, and with the hero that is Master Chief.

As part of the integrated campaign, an innovative web experience has been created that enables consumers to interact with and explore every part of the climactic battle in minute detail. Beyond the TV, cinema and print efforts, the site is also supported by an online advertising campaign that starts the conversation with the consumer and a branded channel on YouTube that helps to position Master Chief as the biggest hero in history. All digital components were created by AKQA San Francisco.

Viewers get a sneak peek at "Diorama" on http://games.yahoo.com Friday Sept. 14 at 9 a.m. PST / 12 p.m. EST, as well as a feature on the making of the diorama, entitled, "Ammo". The "Diorama" work will make its TV debut during NFL Football on CBS Sunday Sept. 16. This, and the full series of web films, which honor the heroism of Master Chief, will also be available on Xbox LIVE Marketplace and http:www.halo3.com/believe starting September 14.

There will be no way for me to use the game to capture saved games and then save them into a workable movie format that I can edit on my computer, correct?

Can someone recommend a cheap capture card to accomplish this?

Thanks

I don't know about "cheap" but if you have an HDMI-enabled Xbox, we've been using the Intensity card by Blackmagic on our Macs.

http://www.blackmagic-design.com/products/intensity/

Runs about $250 and works amazingly well with Final Cut Pro.
