What is going on in here?

There are T-Shirts? Where is mine?

I thought the Museum video was being aired today at noon eastern? It says the 14th on the teaser...

BlimBlim, will you be able to put the new ad up at 9AM PST? Or do you have to snag it from Yahoo!, and then put it up?

Your site isn't blocked at my school, but Yahoo Games is. I will be on the computer until 9:50PST, but then I have to go to another class. I want to know if you will have the ad on Gamersyde before 9:50PST.

Just saw the teaser ad and I must say I'm mostly impressed. The one thing that still pisses me off though is the way they've continued the trend of referring to the Master Chief as just "Master Chief"; as if in an interstellar empire of billions, he's the only person who holds that rank. Even by missing out the "the" when using his rank you put the stress of the word on "Master" making it seem like a title rather than a rank... Grr. The critic in me can't help but be annoyed by that one thing which adds a slight hint of childishness to an otherwise awesome advert.

I really think Spartan-117 or John-117 should have been used more extensively earlier on in the series.

Is he a Master or a Chief... which one is he? I've always wondered how they would handle Master Chief in a Halo 3 film. Yeah, I know that hardcore fans would love all the characters bad ass moments but that isn't enough for the general audience. I think if I was writing the film, I wouldn't necessarily tell it from Master Chief's perspective. That simply doesn't work and most of the audience wouldn't be able to identify with his character.

If I were to write a Halo film I would tell the story through Captain Keyes and if you have read "Fall of Reach" you will will understand why. I think he is the best "gateway" character there is to understanding who John-117 is. I would even include Dr. Halsley in the film. Master Chief simply isn't a compelling enough character for film.

I disagree. Might as well say John Wayne was a shitty cowboy because you couldn't identify with the characters he played.

And the Master Chief naming convention isn't really a problem for me either. From the perspective of the UNSC forces, he would only be known by rank. It's really common for military personnel to identify each other with rank alone. Corporal, Sargent, General, Private. They actually become familiar terms of endearment. One of us monikers that allow a soldier to relate.

I think they did it to help making "Master Chief" a name that is recognized in popular culture, like Mario or Robocop.
Which is a little strange, since it is probably his last apparition in a video game. Well, maybe not, he is probably too famous to disappear now.

Yet we refer to Sergeant Johnson as ... Sergeant Johnson and not just Sergeant.

Master Chief Petty Officer is a very high rank in the current US Navy, so that's the only saving grace here. There wouldn't be a lot of people holding this rank. I still think it would have sounded better if the old man in the commercial would have said "the Master Chief" instead of just Master Chief.

Btw, are they talking about the same battle as the one that appears in "Starry night"?

The veteran describes using the M-41 of an overturned warthog while the chief armed his grenade, which is kinda similar to what happens in the cg teaser.

I just saw the ad. Thanks Gamersyde. It was better than I expected. I'm starting to see the reason why they went with "Believe." (It has to be more than a GAF reference. :lol )

He's referred to as Sergeant from time to time, but yeah, he's not the mythological badass that the Master Chief is. He is the last remaining Spartan. The most elite, seasoned, and enigmatic warrior in the UNSC arsenal. Calling him "John" would be lame.

I can't believe there's a teaser for a commercial. o_O I really enjoyed it though, I like the more serious take on things.

I think this first commercial is the teaser for the whole 'believe' campaign, and that is the full spot. I think ya'll are misenterpreting teaser. I don't think this is a teaser for the full teaser commercial.

I thought the tone / severity of the commercial was spot on. I hope that marine pops up in the campaign. That would be one hell of an easter egg.

I thought the new ad would be released on Friday?
Anyway, I'm taking the plane tonight to go to Bizarre Creations tomorrow, so I won't be the one putting anything online tonight or tomorrow.

Regardless, there are those that recognize your greatness. Enjoy the trip, Li'l Blimmy!

Would've been funny in Halo 2 to hear Arbiter and company reference Master Chief as "John" instead of "Demon".

That makes me curious how the Arbiter will refer to the chief in Halo 3 now that they're BFF.

John would be lame. Spartan 117 would be fine though. Mostly all I'm asking for is a "the Master Chief" when someone is referring to him.

What sounds better?

"Corporal, Master Chief told us to lay down suppressing fire, not friendly fire!"

"Corporal, the Master Chief told us to lay down suppressing fire, not friendly fire!"

I think it is far easier to identify with John Wayne than Master Chief. First and foremost - you could see John Wayne's face. His personality in the games is bad ass, don't get me wrong, but if you were to take that same character and expect him to be a lead in a film he would fall flat.

If we put the novels into the equation it becomes a different story but even "Fall of Reach" utilized other characters to introduce us to Spartan-117 and the stories are told from several different perspectives - not just John's.

Read the leaked Alex Garland script.

From the pages I've read it did sound like an interesting concept. I'll sit down and read the whole thing but it must have been scrapped for a reason.

We need a photoshop with Chief and The Arbiter surrounded by lots of pink hearts.

I was starting to look for BFF pictures on Google images, typed in just "bff" for the search and check the image from the 2nd row, 3rd in. I won't even post the link. My photoshop attempt was stopped immediately.

The Master Chief, defend this station.

The Master Chief, mind telling me what you're doing on that ship?

Good to see you, The Master Chief.

Yeah, because they realized... oops... they paid Alex Garland $1 million dollars and he basically just copied the Halo 1's structure, dialog and characters while leaving out an iconic and important character like
Sergeant Johnson
.

The
Major Silver
character was a nice addition though.

I rewatched the first cut-scene in Halo 1 after I finished the script.
The script copies the game line for line for a period of time.

Good to see you, The Master Chief.

Don't be ridiculous.

I'm talking about when referring to him in the 3rd person, as was done in the video.

It's really simple - use it as a form of rank, instead of as a proper name. Just say a sentence with "Sergeant" replacing "Master Chief". They should both be used the same way.

Clearly "The Master Chief, mind telling me what you're doing on that ship?" is wrong.

"Sergeant, mind telling me what you're doing on that ship?" is right.

"Good to see you, Sergeant".

Etc.

However,

"When Master Chief armed his grenade, I was on the back of a Warthog..." is wrong.

You wouldn't say: "When Sergeant armed his grenade, I was on the back of a Warthog", you'd say "the Sergeant".

"We knew Master Chief was still in the fight. It gave us hope" is wrong because you wouldn't say "We knew Sergeant was still in the fight". You'd say "the Sergeant".

Plus plusity plus. That's exactly what I'm talking about. It just seems to me that the people behind the advert - as talented as they are - have resorted to the kiddish way of talking about the character by dropping "the" and making his rank out to be both his name and a title.
