Can someone tell why spider is so good? I watch same videos and game seems very simple / repeditive. Is all you do is make webs and eat bugs? Are there bugs or things that can kill you later?

It starts off rather simple, but as you reach other areas of the house, some of the bugs are much harder to catch and require you to do different things in order to catch them. Some you have to chase into the web, others you have to hunt and hurt before you can eat them. So far I love this game, and the subtle story in the background keeps you guessing as to what's going on. It takes two things that aren't really connected and makes them fit together rather well. Obviously the spider doesn't care about the house, just lots and lots of food. But the mystery in the background adds a shocking amount of depth and will have you combing over each level to make sure you didn't miss anything.

Take the plunge... do it! You know you want to.

EDIT: IIRC you do die if you run out of web, so you have to be careful how much web you use to catch said bugs.

US only? Not on sale in UK either.

Other than full fledged RPGs, pretty much every genre is now well represented at a fraction of the price on a device that is never not on me.

I know everyones spending patterns are different, but as a compulsive game buyer, the AppStore is a godsend rather than a curse.

Yeah- and while it's easier to make a backlog on the iPhone, it doesn't feel so bad because most of those are $1 titles or even free instead of $20-$35. At this point it would take something truly spectacular to get me to purchase another PSP or DS or console game. Only ones I really plan on grabbing are core Final Fantasy titles.

actually it says 59p when u search it, but in the page it shows up as free however you cannot download it as its currently being modified

this is annoying me, I checked and it was 59p, checked later and it said free, then failed to install due to updates or something, check again and its 59p again.

the hell is up with that? I want it!

Not showing for me, is it not free anymore or is it just not showing up yet?

What the hell, you're right, I just checked again and its back up to $1. That sucks, I couldn't even download it, it said it was being modified every time I tried. I wonder if the dev got cold feet about the free giveaway?

Ok, so I am getting an iphone this Saturday and need some serious suggestions on games. I haven't followed ANY games and have only heard about MGS and Peggle. What top 3 games would you suggest a noob?

geoDefense
Space Invaders Infinity Gene

I can safely say these two are the best in my opinion and can filter the list down to these two. Rarely do I do this with lists!

the last slot has to go to one of these right now:

Draw Race
The Deep Pinball
flight control

If I could only have 3, I'd probably choose The Deep

I love this game. I really like it's soundtrack and whole platforming look it has going on.

The App Store says that Civilization Revolution is "Currently being updated," so I can't download it. Are they changing the price back to $9.99 or something? I've never gotten that message before.

Of all the games I've purchased, I am sadly most disappointed in Rolando 2. The game is probably the most polished and professional of all the games I own, but it is the most derivative and the least creative. Parts of it feel extremely lazy...i can't believe how terrible the music is. I think that's the big difference for me between this and locoroco.

And for the record, I like the game a lot. iPhone gaming has been great for me. I love everything I've purchased.

I owe that to this thread! Waiting for ngmoco to really do something creative though and not just do safe games thatvare exceptionally well tuned and polished.

Wow, Space Invaders Infinity Gene is the best game I've played on this thing yet. Absolutely love the game. It's the first time I really feel attached to the game itself rather than the novelty. :P

If only they could have hit 60 fps. It's still very polished regardless and a lot of fun.

Fair opinion. I'm of the opposite opinion. I think ngmoco is about the only company (maybe EA also or Firement) that consistently does exceptionally well tuned and polished games which is a gaping hole on the platform which is generally filled with unpolished unfinished titles on initial release. I thoroughly am happy that when I buy a ngmoco title it will be at least of a certain level of quality and it will be polished. That is not something I can say for nearly any other dev on the platform consistently.

Completely subjective but I love the music in both Rolando titles also.

Review for Wolfenstein RPG.

Wolfenstein RPG
Rocket Propelled Grenade

Product: Wolfenstein RPG (iPhone) | Developer: idSoftware | Publisher: EA Mobile | Format: iPhone | Genre: Retro, RPG | Players: 1 | Version: Europe | App version: 1.0.0
by Jon Mundy

It's funny how Hollywood actors are usually praised for trying something completely different in their careers, while musicians are so often derided for the same thing.

Think of Laurence Olivier abandoning his noble thespian routine to play the sadistic dentist in Marathon Man, for which he was universally acclaimed. Then compare that with the panning Bob Dylan received when he decided to go electric.

Where do video games sit in all this? Well, gauge your own reaction to the news (whenever you heard it) that id was making an RPG out of its classic first-person shooter franchise Wolfenstein. Were you pleasantly surprised, or adamantly opposed? Right now it doesn't matter what your view is, because you'll love this new iPhone version.

You may recall our review of the Java version earlier in the year (for those who don't, we liked it to the tune of an 8 out of 10 Silver Award). What we have here is a much enhanced version, bringing with it revamped visuals, adapted controls and some quirky mini-games.

The game has you make your way through the grounds of a Nazi-infested compound (including Castle Wolfenstein itself), with the action viewed from the eyes of U.S. Special Ops agent B.J. Blazkowicz.

A few moments with the game will reveal it to be much more than a simple blaster, however. Whilst you explore the simple block-based environments in real time using a virtual D-pad, combat is of the turn-based variety.

Upon encountering an enemy you have all the time in the world to decide whether to attack (a simple tap of the screen with your chosen weapon drawn) or move to a more strategically advantageous position (a horizontal swipe on the screen activates a side-step in that direction).

You can also pause to bring up a menu, from which you can heal yourself or use one of many status-enhancing syringes to temporarily boost your stats.

Ah yes, stats. All of your actions in the game award you experience points, from combating foes to smashing up enemy artefacts. In time honoured RPG style, accruing enough XP will level you up, boosting your attacking and defensive abilities.

If talk of stats and experience points puts you off, don't let it. While you do get a fair amount of old skool RPG information thrown your way as you advance through the game, you can happily ignore it. As long as you manage your resources fairly wisely and keep one eye on your health gauge, you'll make fairly serene progress through the early parts of the game.

By that point you'll have been well and truly sucked in by the game's distinctive presentation and cheeky sense of humour.

While Wolfenstein RPG stays true to its blockily retro heritage in terms of the setting, all of the rough edges have been smoothed off. The chisel-jawed guards and ghoulish skeletons remain defiantly two-dimensional; they've been rendered in a brilliantly expressive style that feels wholly new, while never abandoning the Wolfenstein aesthetic.

There's a fair amount of humour in this latest iteration, too. Look out of a window and you might see a googly-eyed chicken plummeting to its doom, while a hilarious early encounter with a bunch of guards in a bathroom led to me using the toilets as offensive weapons.

Venture into the catacombs and the spooky atmosphere is broken with some groan-inducing tombstone engravings. "Here lies an atheist, all dressed up and no place to go," is just one example.

Wolfenstein RPG is full of such balancing acts: hardcore RPG elements rounded off by chicken-kicking mini-games. An intense tale of storming a Nazi castle set against a jokey script. And chief among them: a distinctly retro-tinged experience that feels perfectly at home on Apple's state-of-the art iPhone. Unmissable.

Rolando 2 is one of those games for me where I can't quite figure out why I don't enjoy it, I just don't. The gameplay just feels very repetitive and frustrating after a while. I finished the first 50% of the levels, but I just can't bring myself to do any more. I find all the screen tilting and finger flicking to get really tedious. I would have been a lot happier with it had it just been slightly cheaper, I think it would have at least had a psychological impact on my perception of its quality.

Exactly what I felt about the first game. The game was very tedious for me.

Yup, that's a sign of them updating the price. I guess you missed out, unfortunately.

The tilting and flicking with four rolandos rolling around can be extremely tedious. But at least you can control them independently when you need to do so.

Rolando 2 is at least more developed and fleshed out than rolando, which is such a blatant copy pasta.

Thanks, I haven't been super interested in it, but I really do hate trying to track down reviews of App Store stuff sometimes.

It'll be interesting to see how Madden is compared to 2010. Looks like 2010 is at least competent...know what to expect of Madden on console, but not on the iPhone/Touch

It's not a bad football game for a mobile title. It actually exceeded my expectations although it certainly has flaws. My major annoyance is in the passing game where when you throw the ball the receivers tend to stop instead of catching the ball in stride. On a touch screen you would think the best feature would be that you could lead your receivers or throw to spots. I would recommend waiting on Madden and seeing how that one turned out although like I said, I actually kinda like 2010 even though it admittedly has flaws.

I've always found Rolando to be like this, I don't get the hype for it. Loco Roco wannabe with shonky art direction.

I'll say it again, this thread is a curse!

I've bought Mevo, Wolfy RPG and Spider. Spider has bumped itself up to one of my favorite games on the iPhone PERIOD. Something so relaxing and smooth, peaceful but engaging...

BUY THE DAMN GAME.

Oh and Monkey Island :P

I'm enjoying Spy Bot Chronicles. I like the way it feels a lot more than Castle of Magic.
Anything else good come from the developers/what are considered the best straight up platformers for iPhone?

Sidenotes: You all are two seconds away from making me try Spider and Plushed is all but bought already. I really like the art.

Consolidating all my replies into one post...

So *phew* we FINALLY got through all the Apple hoops and submitted our first app. With that, I put our site live http://www.trickshotgames.com
I'm so excited! Being an indie developer feels so different from working in a large game company!

Now that some of you have had a day to spend with Wolf RPG, are you still happy with it? About to pull the trigger on this or Infinity Gene, leaning towards Wolf, but wanted to make sure nobody is having any issues with it.

I liek both fine. Wolf RPG reminds me kind of a cross between Wolfenstein and the old Bardstale. It's more like Wolfenstein than BT, however (more action, less text-based).

It's kind of an amusing distraction. I've always loved the old-school doom style of levels that try to construct some kind of recognisable environment out of limited block building, and Wolf RPG gives me that vibe.

I'd say go with Infinity Gene if you had to pick one. It's something you'll love to just have on your phone, where as Wolfenstein RPG is more the kind of game you just want to see what it's like as a phone game.

Bought Infinity Gene. Amazing. Whoever made this game needs a raise, there is some awesome stuff going on there. As crazy as it gets at any given time, im' amazed at how precise they still make it feel.

"Ridiculous" 1.7?

Galcon is pretty neat. It was my first major purchase on my iPod Touch. This is a very welcomed update. So what do teh colours do in the settings? I though t it would have an effect on teh player colours, but they don't seem to...
