Unify update is out:

Code:
- no more crashing
- initial open feint screen less of a problem
- high-scores you get when you're offline submit when you get back online
- latest version of openFeint
- preferences to force music or sounds on and off separately
- clearer distinction between pieces in the middle row and the background

Still $1! If you don't own this, you are part of the problem!

My friends at Last Legion Games recently released their new app Polyghost ($2.99)

It's a cool little app, featuring vinyl toys from many artists (Tim Biskup, friendswithyou, devilrobots, etc) and you can buy more to fill up a virtual collection.

The catch here is that you use the poseable figures, which you can than position in-app over a photo you've snapped with your iPhone camera, use the lighting controls and make it look like the different characters are interacting in a real-world scene!

It's something fun and different to do with your iPhone, check it out!

I work for friendswithyou right now, mainly doing malfi design stuff.

Based off people's interest here, would people here highly like a game based around the friendswithyou universe?

I've been meaning to focus on this possibility but have been so busy with other work that I havent had time to ask.

so, does something like this seem worth buying (hopefully for .99)? What type of game would fit perfect?

I'm looking for:

1) Any game that's like SMAC?

2) Any good RPG.

3) Any good 4X Space Empire game.

Anybody have a lead on anything like these games? The app-store overfloweth -- hard to find what I'm looking for.

That art style is great and I'd buy something that looks like that, for 0.99 or 1.99. I have no game design suggestions, though.

noted. If I can get enough people to back up this becoming a game I can have better pull on something happening.

I'd love to play a 2.5D platformer (like Klonoa) with art like that.

Again thanks man :) I shall play this word adventure :)

Dooooo it, and report back here. You can't NOT like this game - it's really good. Good practice for Word Ace too!

It's sad that the iPhone can't even handle a simple puzzle game like Lumines or even Tetris properly because it only has a touch screen.

What? Tetris works really well, and has many solid updates to improve performance and add requested features.

Everyone likes to claim that Tris is better, but it is not.

So far I'm really liking it but one thing that's keeping me from dully enjoying it is that there's no real progression other than getting better at words. wish it had a level up system similar to puzzle quest.

so far it's great though.

again, people, a huge help would to know if a friendswithyou game is something you'd like to see. the more people I can get to back it up the more of a chance I can make it happen.

True. It's pretty much just a high scores game.

Funnest ipod ever?! Funnest?! What kind of word is that? dictionary.com and Chambers don't recognise it at all.

Meh, this was complained about like last year.

It's no worse than "Think Different."

Some good iPhone stuff came out of the Tokyo Game Show this weekend.

What could this be? (Hint: Capcom) :D

Meh. Either they keep the difficulty really low, either it won't work.

I saw someone playing the original GnG (NES, on an emulator) on iPhone a few days ago. I thought "This guy is absolutely crazy. Playing this game with a pad is already hard, but on an iPhone :lol"

So, can anybody point me towards:

1) A TBS game like Sid Meir's Alpha Centauri.

2) A good 4X Space Empire sim.

3) A good loot-whore game.

1) Civilization Revolution
2) ?
3) Dungeon Hunter

Both games are great, highly recommended.

Yes, I've got Civ IV here on the mac, so I'm covered there. I'm really looking more for a sci-fi TBS. (Really miss SMAC).

I'll try Dungeon Hunter - Thanks!

I would kill for something like SMAC, on any platform.

But don't pass up on Civ Rev just because you have Civ IV. It's amazing as a portable version of Civilization, great to crack open for a few minutes.

I'm thinking about going with the 8GB Ipod Touch 3rd Generation ($199) over the PSP-Go. Any suggestions why I should or shouldn't? I know the ultimate decision is mine but I like hearing from you guys.

Word of caution: the 8GB lacks the updated hardware, so it may not be able to play all games that come out in the future. However the 8GB's mere existence kind of limits the number of games that will make use of the extra power in the near future.

Whether you go iPod Touch over PSPGo is something you should decide yourself (I don't like the PSPGo personally) but you should really go for the 32gig version instead of the 8gig. Besides extra storage for music/movies/apps/games it has the new CPU which makes it run a lot better than an 8gig.

I could be wrong, but I think that the 8GB now is not actually 3rd gen, they are simply stock from the 2nd gen. The real 3rd gen with new tech boost are the 32 and 64GB.

Get the 32gb model. Now only do you get a ton more storage, but as others said it has faster internal components so it runs games better.

This is true. Gonna sell my 1st gen 32GB and get a 64GB as my memory is at CAPACITY!

I am in love with Dungeon Hunter, in my eyes, it is the most polished game I have seen on the platform.
Ditto. It's hard to say anything is the most, but it's pretty damned polished.

Visually, if Underworld is Diablo on your phone, then Dungeon Hunter is Titan Quest. There's a few minor niggles, but there's few pieces of software that don't have them. It's just a fun, well designed, great looking game.

Add long to that list. There is a lot of game here!

Well after playing it for a while. Im not really digining it. Love the presentation and the idea. But in practice it just doesnt control very well, and its pretty unintutive. You have a bunch of bottons on screen and motion control. It is a little bit like Pilot Wings or Nights. Just not as good.

I also tried the Lite version of gangstar. Ugh. Not very good. Maybe a 99 cent purchase just for the novelty factor but ugh.

Dungeon Hunter is awesome though. Well worth the 7 bucks. Playing that now. Also Robocopalyse is 2.99 for a limited time. Dling that now.

I can't wait for this, it looks great.

Also, having put some time in, I concur on Dungeon Hunter, it's the real deal. Awesome game.

Hey all, I am giving 2 more copies of dungeon scroll away at TheCurrentGamer.com. Picking winners on Friday.

On a seperate not: ELVEN CHRONICLES so far I am pretty dissapointed but am not very far along. Just feels to much like a port, and not a very good one at that. I know Zenonia was a port but I liked that game leaps and bounds over Elven so far. Even early on I was already having a blast. If you are considering buying I would get zenonia or Hybrid first.

Tossing up between Zenonia, Hybrid or Dungeon Hunter. I tend to prefer simple/clean 2D art to 3D stuff on the iPhone but they all seem to be decent titles. Hard decision to make and normally I would just buy all of them but I'm trying to be more frugal with my small purchases lately. Maybe I should just play and finish Rolando or Puzzle Quest instead :lol .

I love Hybrid. Just thought I'd share that.

Only game I played while in Japan for a week. Prob put 15-20 hours into it.

So good, it reminds me of Treasure's efforts on the GBA.

I disagree with the notion that the iPhone is inky playe because if it's convenience. Sure it IS convenient, but it not the only reason.

I only have a ds and iPhone and I play m iPhone more. This is probably just me, as I'm simply not playing more hardcore gams all that much any more. There's just so much content in the AppStore and for cheap that so that there's always something to do on your iPhone.

On the ds I'm waiting for interesting titles on a monthly or weekly basis. On the iPhone you can just grab something new nearly everyday or revisit something with an update. Sure it encourages kind of ADD attention span in gaming, but when that's. All you feel like doing, it's perfect.

You got it right, MrKgoo!

It reminds me a bit of something like the Xbox Live Arcade only that the interesting titles pop out daily at a fraction of the cost. Also, and yes maybe it is some sort of ADD issue, I love how you can play a little of one game and, in just a couple of taps, be playing something totally different without having to find the appropriate cartridge/disc.

3) A good loot-whore game.

While not the deepest game in town, Loot Master is a pretty cute tap to kill beasties with THOUSANDS of different dropped loot items ala Diablo. Also cooly is that a lot of the weapons and or armor are not super clear cut on better/best since they have some many variables. Like there is a robe that might offer only moderate armor but greatly enhance your intelligence and damage vs. a piece of chain mail that offers much better protection but no great side bonuses.

I am having so much fun with Backbreaker Football. The graphics are pretty awesome and the gameplay, while pretty simple, is addicting, especially once you get to Challenge 2 with out of bounds red zones. I'll probably have to remove the Facebook link as I'm sure I'm one score update away from people deleting me, I've been playing it so much.

I'm still rocking hard with unify. Man, I love this game so much.

whenever there's a sudden color shift my brain has that split second to adjust and rework all the matches again in my head. it's jarring, but in a good way. it's a cool sensation. and then the music picks up and the bass gets heavier when the speed picks up in later levels. such a funky sensation.

plus it can be played in quick sessions and is immediately satisfying.

it's everything I love about portable gaming.

hmm... and now Che's recommendation of Hybrid has me seriously considering picking that up this weekend. I had originally dismissed it as an action title due to the virtual d-pad. I'll have to look into it a bit more.

'Eliminate' Hands-On Preview - Touch Arcade

We first played Eliminate back at WWDC, and while there wasn't much to the game at that time, it was clear there was potential for something remarkable. This week we played what was one of the final builds of the game before its submission to Apple, and after my limited time with the game it's extremely difficult to find anything negative at all to say about the entire experience.

First off, in case you've managed to miss out on previous Eliminate (also previously known as LiveFire and KillTest) coverage, here's the basic premise of the game– You are an employee of Arsenal Megacorp, a weapons manufacturer whose secret to success is that all their weaponry is tested on live humans.

As an employee in the company you compete in four player deathmatches with other employees either via 3G or WiFi. The premise of the game is extremely clever, and I really recommend reading the memos and watching the videos on the Eliminate web site.

The controls work very similar to other first person shooters on the platform, with two virtual joysticks (though you can "touch anywhere") that handle your movement and aiming. Firing your weapon can either be done by tapping your left thumb on the screen, or enabling auto-fire in the game's options. With that turned on, any time there is an enemy in your crosshairs you will automatically fire. Flicking the left side of the screen causes your view to quickly spin around, allowing you to quickly and easily target things all around you.

Tapping the bottom of the screen jumps and tapping the top brings up the menu displaying the scoreboard. The controls took a little getting used to, and after I fiddled with the sensitivity options I felt right at home and was slaughtering other Arsenal Megacorp employees in no time.

Since Eliminate is an online multiplayer game, its bread and butter is in the matchmaking system. When I was playing, there were only 10 or so players online, so I wasn't able to see it in its full glory, but when the game goes live the matchmaking algorithm should make sure everyone is playing against players of equal skill. If you come across a match where you have one person who is destroying everyone, that person will rank up and play with a higher player pool in the next game.

In-game credits serve as an experience point system as well as a monetary system to buy upgrades. While you're energized, each person you kill will drop credits. Credits can then be spent on different armor types that give your character small bonuses such as higher defenses, the ability to jump higher, swim faster, and other effects. Guns are also purchased using credits, and following that everything that you've purchased can also be individually upgraded.

Say you really like the plasma cannon, but can't handle its slow reload times. You can spend credits to make your gun reload faster, along with several other upgrades. This allows for nearly infinite customization between players, as while you may value reload speed on your guns with armor that allows you to move quickly, someone else might opt for armor that provides a higher defense at the cost of speed and they might focus on upgrading the raw damage output of their guns.

The energy system has caused quite a stir on our forums as users all speculated how it was going to work. The build I played was approaching the final version of the game that is set to be submitted to Apple for approval, but everything I saw and discussed came with the caveat of the fact that the whole system was still under development and none of it had been completely finalized yet.

In the current system, your energy bar consists of 20 power cells which is said to be enough for 3-4 games in which you can earn credits. When your energy is gone, you can continue to play but you won't be able to earn credits during those games. Energy is recharged once every 90 minutes for free, but if you want it sooner there are two options: The first of which is to simply buy more energy via an in-app microtransaction (pricing to be announced). Different energy packs will be available at different rates depending on the quantity you buy.

If, however, you're not interested in paying for energy (or waiting the 90 minutes), you can alternatively complete marketing offers in-game to earn additional energy. This method of payment system has seen great success in Facebook games, and I will be very interested to see how it does in Eliminate. The various offers you can complete range from completing a simple survey to signing up for a Discover card, and will change over time.

Bam! Yep, that ngneil7.
The rationale for these systems of "payment" are to support the server infrastructure to host all the games into the future. So in order to keep everything online, players can optionally chip in to keep everything running. Of course, if you don't care about earning credits, there is nothing stopping you from playing all day long. Every 90 minutes you will be recharged and can earn more credits, but in the meantime you can keep joining online games and playing without receiving any benefit to your character level or arsenal.

I wasn't able to test Eliminate over the 3G network, however I've been assured that they've done in-depth testing to offer a great gameplay experience both over WiFi and 3G. Game servers are also being distributed geographically, which should help keep ping times low regardless of where you're playing from.

There has also been some discussion about the fact that Eliminate only feature four player deathmatches. As ngmoco explained, this was a conscience design decision that was made after weighing many factors such as what would work best between the screen real estate, hardware performance limitations, and still achieve a very fun experience. The maps are all designed for four players, and none of the games I played ever felt like something was lacking by only playing with four people. As a veteran of games like Goldeneye on the Nintendo 64, four players felt right at home for this kind of game.

ngmoco plans on listening to player feedback and has intentions to continue to support Eliminate through content updates. I also asked about additional game modes, which is also being discussed between the Eliminate development team. The initial decision to launch with only one deathmatch game mode was made so everyone would be playing in the same player pool. While they already have other game modes working internally, and are open to adding them to the game, they wanted to properly seed the initial launch to avoid fragmenting the community across deathmatch, team deathmatch, and other modes.

Even without the extra game modes, Eliminate is a ton of fun. I played through the five different maps both locally with bots and online — including soundly defeating Ngmoco CEO Neil Young (see screenshot above). The maps are all small, but most have gimmicks to them like elevators, different water elements, and even walls that slide back and forth to squish you. All of the maps have a futuristic look to them, fitting in perfectly with the art style of the already released trailers.

Whenever you kill someone (or someone else kills someone) and you're energized, credits explode from their corpse. This is actually one of the elements to the game I enjoyed the most, as it is very easy to steal other people's credits from their kills. (Note: these are "bonus" kill credits and not actually deducted from the victim's personal stash.) When someone dies, all the nearby players run to grab the credits, and I actually found you can set up traps for other players by leaving uncollected credits around and hiding behind a corner waiting for them to come collect the seemingly unguarded credits.

In my time with the game, I was only able to buy one suit upgrade to increase my defenses along with one additional weapon, the plasma cannon, which is the Eliminate equivalent of a shotgun. The other items both were more expensive than I could afford, and also required you to be a higher player level to purchase. (Players rank up from levels 1 to 50 based on lifetime earnings.) I see tons of potential for customizing my weapon and armor load out, and I really can't wait to get the full version of the game to give this a try.

Playing multiplayer Eliminate is one of the most impressive gaming experiences I've had so far on the iPhone. I walked away from the experience amazed by how far the game had exceeded my expectations, and I look forward to sitting on a train playing in a four player deathmatch with people from all over the world using my phone.

Sounds good... Can't wait!

I've been so busy lately I haven't even had time for iphone gaming! :(

Gonna try and catch up on what I've missed. What are the really stand out games since unify has come out?
