The Official iPhone/iPod Touch Gaming Thread

Not open for further replies.
When the games like EWJ and Modern Combat came out I was at a point of not using my touch much due to coming home from uni and owning a new gaming pc, but now that I wan't to buy said games I keep thinking that because we are so close to christmas Gameloft are going to pull a fast one and stick them down in price at some point. This is the itunes app store weakness of changing prices too easily on the fly. I may just grab EWJ anyway as I love the games.

Stuff I am looking forward to are NOVA as it looks like a pocket halo with minor metroid elements, Driver if the port is done well and there seems to be a good handful of RPG's coming out. Damn if I didn't say that the iphone/touch is becoming a nice portable rpg machine.

I also feel like a fool not picking up Monopoly at £1.79 the other day, it's now £2.99 and i'm in that board game mood.

Kind of weirdly inappropriate for this thread, but the dedicated thread's fallen a ways down the list, so I figured I should post here. Physical Word Ace decks are finally available for order!

http://www.selfawaregames.com/blog/2009/12/02/cards/

We got a run of 150 decks, of which about 120 are available for purchase (the rest are gifts for our friends & families). Each deck is signed & hand-numbered by the entire team @ self aware. $24.99/deck + shipping & handling.

If you wanna discuss it, talk about it here:

I picked up LaunchBall:

(appshopper link)

99c (supposedly launch price).

Looks like a nifty take on the Electric Box school of puzzles, but with a physics/gravity twist. Comes with a level editor and access to user created levels. I've only played the 6 tutorial levels so don't know if the puzzles get as devious as Electric Box yet, however.

It has really nice aesthetics and it runs really smoothly thus far. Also gives you scientific facts between levels.

electric box is better IMO. neither are polished enough though to be definitive.

I think so too. Electric box is actually very good. The problem I have with Launchball is that it's a bit 'trial and error' - there isn't so much logic to the puzzles - just experimenting where to place things.

Hmm...are they good quality?

anyone else playing lumines touch? gotten all golds except single lap (silver so far), which is quite tough just because it's hard to get in those last second blocks to keep combos going (even though the chain requirement is mercifully lowered to 3). such a bummer about the endless mode not increasing speeds though. oh also the comic pack is nice imo.

With a small run of cards, you can't get the super fancy-schmancy printing that you might be able to get if you were making thousands upon thousands of decks. But these are offset-printed, glossy cards, and I think they're really nice looking and feel great. For a deck of 102 cards (the standard Word Ace deck, and 2 blanks in case you lose cards, or want to use them as Scrabble-style blanks), they're as tall as ... hm... about 2 1/3 dvd cases stacked on each other (the narrow dimension, of course).

If we didn't think they were good enough to sell, we wouldn't be selling 'em. :)

I was thinking the exact same thing tonight. I can't even keep track of all the RPGs slated to come out in the coming weeks and months, not to mention what's already become available. Really exciting.

has anyone purchased labyrinth 2? i never played the first one so i don't really understand the point of the game - am I just trying to roll the ball in the hole? is it...fun?

Wow, dudes.

Critter Crunch is so awesome.
I guess you don't have a ps3? Cause that version's just plum amazing. Haven't tried the iPhone version but the ps3 version is incredible.

Today's Appvent Calendar Free Game of the Day is Snorkeling(From $0.99)

EA's iPhone Deal of the Day is Boggle ($1.99 -> $0.99)

First day I might pass on the free game, but the last two were awesome. Let me know if I should stop posting these deals.

whoo just got all golds on lumines. took me four early clear-alls to do it on single lap though. too bad there's no platinum.

No, please keep posting them. I check GAF everyday. I had forgotten the appvent thing was even happening.

Eh, I tried Snorkeling, but I cant really get the grasp of the controls. Might help if I read the instructions. :lol

The company I work for just released a game called BounceDown for free... it's pretty fun and given its free I hope this doesn't count as shilling...
Cool will give it a try, but reading the reviews it sounds like all the staff chipped in their 5 stars :lol

Ha, well I wouldn't be surprised if at least some of the people who worked on it rated it highly, but I went with just letting the GAF collective know instead, because we all like free stuff

No, this showed up on my App Genius thing. I ain't never no heard of it.

If you have a PS3, get Critter Crunch from there. Capybara did an amazing job.

My company's (LeftRight Studios) new iPhone game sneaked on to the App Store recently. It's called KatchUp and it's $0.99 for a limited time. It's kind of a time management game where you work two conveyor belts and keep crazy things from making it into your ketchup.

If you pick it up my tip is to try and play with both hands -- You'll never be able to work the dispenser and the button with just one. My record is 143 bottles (I dare you to beat me, it'll take at least 30 minutes). It's simple, but damn I keep playing it long past I thought I would.

...and I am shilling a little bit here, but to make up for it, I'll give promo codes to the first two PMs I get.

Off topic I suppose, but can someone recommend me a game like SE's Hills and Rivers on the PC?

I tried the lite version and while I like it, there is too much going on for me to really enjoy it on my touch's small screen - I'm sure there are plenty of similar games on the PC

^^ Is there a listing somewhere of what you need to do to accomplish gold in each area?
I don't think so but I have a pretty good rough idea

Basic Pack
Lap 90k
60s 50
120s 100
180s 160

Comic Pack
Lap 100k
60s 60
120s 100
180s 130

Endless I really dunno just did Endless to 500k for each then bailed and that was good enough.

i miss unlocking stuff though but oh well at least i have that beautiful gold medal over each pack

how do you guys like 33rd division, those who got it free from the appvent calendar? the idea sounded great since i'm a big fan of flight control/harbor master. can't believe i missed the free day, but luckily it's only a buck if it's worth getting.

I was bummed because I thought it would be more RTS, and it really is just a line draw game. It's kinda easy, too. Well worth a buck, though.

what game is it?
sorry, lumines.
Lumines needs to let you continue where you left off if you need to close the program.
Yes, that's quite annoying. Would be more annoying if the Endless mode was actually a proper endless mode and not just a slow plod through all the levels over and over until you feel like you're done. Longest single session I play is the 180s time trial.

I wouldn't pay for 33rd Division, got it for free but not very good. Thought it would be like mercenaries or cannon fodder even. nope!

been burnt on quite a few iphone games now, feels like its dropped back to the level of mediocrity that was prevalent before the 3GS

Got Monopoly though and local multiplayer is so awesome :D

I really enjoyed 33rd Division, but I'm new to iPhone games (just got mine recently... that's why I'm so in to these deals). Since I'm new to the iPhone, I'm also new to line drawing games, so I can't really compare it to Flight Control since I don't own it. I would say it is worth $1.

33rd was also my favorite of the free games so far. Tridefense seems like an in depth TD game, but I'm really hooked on The Creeps right now to put too much time in to it.

From all the games I've bought or tried free so far, I have to say that I think iPhone games work better when they use natural controls instead of trying to fake an analog stick on the screen. However, Minisquadrons worked ok this way but that is the only one so far. TD games just seem like a natural fit for the iPhone.

I'm having fun with Beat It ($2,99):

http://itunes.apple.com/se/app/beat-it/id335583964?mt=8

It's rhythm game with an interesting idea.

Instead of following a pattern, you listen to a beat and then have to recreate it. So you listen to the drum, bass, the hihat, etc, and place the beats on the correct spot to build the tune. You get to listen to the beat three times, then you start making it (you can listen to it again anytime while recreating it).

There's a video here.

And there's a "free play" mode, where you can create your own patterns. A free update that allows you to share, play and rate each others tracks is planned.

Sounds cool, kind of reminds me of Amplitude's multiplayer. I'll have to give it a shot.

Yeah, I bought this last night. I'm enjoying the music and aesthetics. Might not appeal to everyone, but I dig it.
