The Official iPhone/iPod Touch Gaming Thread

Leaving my $0.02 on a couple suggested/mentioned titles. I'm more willing to spend more than just $1 or $2 on the AppStore these days. Picked up Dark Void Zero & Warpgate.

Warpgate is awesome. It's like a minimized, faster paced Freelancer. (by faster paced I mean it ramps up really quickly to choosing sides and combat is quick...great for a phone game). Combat's fast and fun, controls are tight (tap/slide), haven't been frustrated in an hour. Always a big plus. Definitely one of the best space games on the iPhone.

Dark Void is great for it's psuedo-old school vibe. The music and visuals represent NES well, though there's more animation and definitely more (analog) input than any NES game I remember playing. But it's just as quick to wrap your mind around as any NES title. Fairly challenging too, though that may have more to do with the touchscreen and needing to be very precise around some electrical walls and enemy bullets. I think this says how much I like it: if I buy a DSi I may get it on there too. Although it's short (or appears to be) I think it's worth the money just for the oddly reminiscent feeling it gives.

I'm sure I missed the discussion on this, but what do you think becomes of open feint integration in games when apple's new game service opens up? Peaceful/competitive coexistence? I know a lot of games will maintain the old system but does that kind of spell the end for OF's future (and plus+ too)?

Ideally, I'd like them both to dissapear and have all games convert over.

Realistically, both services will hang around in some capacity and only some games will be converted. Any new major release had better use Game Center, though.

The OF guy hopes that they can dovetail into Game Center along with offering some unique services which Apple's service won't. I imagine it's the same for Plus+/Crystal.

Unfortunately, iPhone OS 4.0, which is required for Game Center, will not be released for first-gen iPod Touch or iPhone. So a developer would be throwing away sales by using Game Center.

I don't understand why GameCenter wouldn't work on Gen 1 iPhone & iTouch.
Isn't it just something in-game that ties to software, and not hardware?

Because Game Center is part of iPhone OS 4.0, just like in-app-purchasing is part of iPhone OS 3.0. But Apple will not release iPhone OS 4.0 to the first-gen iPhone and iPod Touch, ever, so they will not get any of the OS 4 features at all.

I don't see how that's "throwing away sales." Nowhere does it say that if a game is supported by Game Center it won't work on an original model. My guess is that Game Center just won't be supported on that device.

I doubt that'll really affect sales.

I'll only be buying games that are 4.0 compliant, then.

I'd say it's more tied to Steve Jobs wanting people to upgrade their old phones.

Thinking about it some more, this doesn't even make any sense. Apple won't approve any apps past 4.0's release unless they're 4.0 compliant, right?

I can see there being an issue for 1st gen owners that are playing OpenFeint / Plus+ / Crystal games that make the swap to Game Center, but the games themselves should still maintain backwards compatibility for the large part. For example, take Flight Control - it uses GPS on an iPhone, but not on an iPod Touch. The same would ring true for Game Center, multitasking (3GS only), and anything else that is added in OS 4.0.

Ey Jonny, what are your recs for good iPhone games? Galuda II has piqued my interest in the platform.

Is it possible to move saves from one device to another?
(Let say I have an old iTouch and will get the next iPhone, how do I migrate my saves?)

Short Answer: no.

Don't want to begin to divert the topic, so I'm only saying the following to explain it and hopefully be done with the topic in this thread.

Only a jailbreak can help you with backing up and restoring individual saves from one device to another or after removing it on one device. Requires a lot of searching using the Unix find command via ssh. Games are never in the same folder on two devices, so you have to hope the games subfolder has it's name for the search to work. Most do, a few don't. I haven't looked in a while but the equivalent to the app store for unsigned apps may have some app that can backup app data automatically.

Some games do copy your progress with open feint, but out of the games I have with open lfeint only one I know does that for sure.

Really sucks. I hope with OS4.0 or iTunes 10 games can copy their saves to your PC when synced and the device is backed up. Fat chance of that though.

Long answer: yes? When you connect a new device don't you have the option of restoring from another iDevice backup? (which would also restore file based saves). Some apps tie themselves to the device (screw you Baseball Slugger!) and reset save data on a new device.

Just thought I'd drop by to pimp a few titles:

Above - A randomly generated platformer that's sort of similar to Doodlejump in concept, however that's where the similarities end. It features amazing anime style art for its three locations (metropolis, Tea Garden, Space) and a great electronic soundtrack. A young business man wielding a briefcase runs back and forth and you control his jumps by holding your finger down on the screen and releasing as a bar charges. The longer you charge, the higher the jump. A series of platforms appear in the sky as you make your way up, including moving platforms, super jump platforms, ultra jump platforms, and platforms that fall when you jump on them.

Kings of Fishing - A fishing game from Gameloft that features excellent production values, with a number of different fishing spots including the Bahamas, Lake Eerie, and the Amazon. There are 29 or so different fish and a number of lures to earn as you receive emails on your PDA to take on fishing challenges. The graphics are seriously good, from the foliage in the locales, to the ripples in the waves, to the fish themselves, overall I'd say it's easily on a par with a dreamcast game. The fishing is solid too, featuring extensive use of the tilt features to keep your line tension from rising to casting.

Ozone - I just got this one but I can tell it's gonna be awesome as the production values are outstanding and the mechanics seem very interesting. It's got a high level of polish to the graphics and the soundtrack is very nice. I'll just link the review here as I've just played through the tutorial. Evidently, this game features members who have worked on Motor Storm Pacific Storm and Heavy Rain as well!

I haven't been able to from 3G to 3GS. It restores your notes, mail, settings, sms etc... but not the apps themselves. Those have to be re-added after the restore (when you press sync again). But it didn't restore my app data. Another guy at work has a 3GS too, I'll ask him tomorrow if it restored everything or just his Apple embedded apps.

I know it will restore your saved app data if you buy a 2nd device of the same model. A guy at work has gone through 3 3G's, but his stuff restores completely.

I went from a 1st gen iPhone to a 3GS and iTunes restored all my data including app data. The first sync restored sms's etc and the second restored apps and appdata.

"IMO" is, or will be out tonight at midnight as it's already on the NZ store, I decided to make a 2nd itunes account and grab it early and all I can say is that it's truely a korean F2P mmo just on your phone, rather good effort.

The cash shop doesn't seem to work right now but it could be because it's not out in the UK officially yet, frame rates are a but chunky (if you thought zenonia's 15 fps was bad...) but for a MMO it's enough, not made a mistake because of it yet. Leveling is also 4 times slower then Pocket Legends and the cap right now is 50, will be a while before anyone hits it.

With this and pocket legends on my touch I don't think any other games will get a looking into for a while lol.

TouchArcade thread with info.

NZ iTunes link.

Well if two people say it's possible, it must be. My friend at work with a 3GS didn't bother restoring at all. So I can't find out if it worked for him or not.

Now I wonder why the restore only restored my iPone information and embeded App data and not stuff for the various games I had. But that's when I began to search and found that I could do it all manually because I was JB, some of the most tedious crap I've ever done. Ended up just getting the saves for the games I liked the most, I had 7 pages dedicated to games at that time. More now >_<. Puzzle Quest was worth it though.

Thanks for the heads-up. I bought this earlier and am just over half way through the Earth stages. It looks and sounds great, and it plays super well.

It reminds me of Soul Bubbles.

I feel spoiled. So many great games for the iPhone without having to break my budget.

That said, I'm playing Undercroft right now. It's Wizardry style first-person dungeon crawler with automapping. I made a party of a warrior, a bow assassin, a mage and a healing priest, and I would be much further into the game right now if not for my thesis work (curses).

Anyone else played this game?

I played about 9 hours of it, and loved it.

Then I had to reformat my PC's drive, and foolishly synched my phone to a fresh install of iTunes. It erased every single savegame for every game on my phone.

Never went back to it.

Is Apple ever going to address this?

The only solution right now is to have a proper back up of iTunes before you format, which honestly, you should have anyway.

It's a large korean grind mmo, but I am impressed, level 8 has taken a good 5 hours so far :lol but like most mmo's once you learn locations and tricks to upgrading gear you could power level in half that time, I think.

Unlike pocket legends this mmo is actually a large world where hundreds can run around, PL is dungeon party based. Both games are worthy of being installed and played.

Short answer - YES.

Uniwar or Rogue Planet by far.

Also, just got WARPGATE - amazing game. Best game I've played on the iPhone yet. It's like a simplified single-player Eve Online. Very good.

Warpgate is indeed excellent. It will be the first game I buy when I finally get my iPad as well.

That's the really hard way to find the game folder you need. Search for AppLinks in Cydia for a shortcut.

Ah fuck, why did I brave this thread? I'm looking for an rts/rpg for the iPad and discover FOotball Mangar is out instead. My life is over

How do you do a "proper" back-up of iTunes?

Also, is there any GAF games of Uniwar going on? If so, I want in on that!

An external HDD or cloud backup of the entire iTunes folder, not just the music.

So interested in this, but I only have a 3G - any reports on how it performs on the slightly older devices?

Long answer - IT DEPENDS. If you buy the 8GB one, NO. That one is secretly only a second-gen (though they called it a third-gen when they first released it). Buy a larger one, then YES.
