Any word on whether Apple is going to introduce faster iPhone hardware this year?
Other than rumors and pure speculation? No.

Now if you want the rumors and speculation:
A4, perhaps 1ghz like the iPad, who knows. If it's at 600mhz it'll basically be the same as the current CPU, since it appears to be the running the same generation ARM core. I was disappointed by that since I was hoping to see the new ARM and potentially multicore.

GPU is kind of a mystery to me. It's an SGX likely, but no one has pinned down which one afaik. All the reviews just kind of pass over it as "same as the iPhone"...ignoring that it's pumping over 4x the pixels and doing it faster. The SGX also comes in multicore variants, but who knows what they're using since it seems like no one has bothered checking.

Otherwise supposedly a 4x res screen (up to 960x640 from 480x320)...which I have doubts about (any other 300+ PPI screens?) but would love to see.

And the always rumored front facing camera. The 4.0 SDK supposedly mentions front and rear cameras, flash (and torch aka flashlight), and frameworks that appear to be for audio/video chats, as well as screen sharing...which would be awesome if it's for OS X, cause VNC speed blows compared to their custom thing.

Oh and there's the always rumored Verizon but that's in the class of "I'll believe it when it happens", like it's up there with the PPC to Intel switch.

I'm hoping for a higher rez screen, equal or better than on the Nexus 1. After using that thing for 5 minutes it took me 5 hours to get used to my crap 3GS screen:p. Looked so good >_<.

Beyond that I imagine that if they just do a side grade like adding the 3G to the iphone, they'll add 4G antenna and not much else. It seems like they'd be shooting themselves in the iPad if they upgrade the iPhone too much.

Long answer - IT DEPENDS. If you buy the 8GB one, NO. That one is secretly only a second-gen (though they called it a third-gen when they first released it). Buy a larger one, then YES.
Yeah, I got an 8Gb early this year and I'm kind of annoyed that I wont have multitasking. I still think the 8Gb is best value for money, but some would disagree.

I love my 8gb 2g touch, it's middle power between the original 3G iphone and it's 3Gs version, but yes will lack some of the 4.0 extras, which is a shame.

I bought it when the 2g was first out and I have no regrets, will be using it for another year easily before moving on.

Buying one now however would be silly, if they drop the 2g touch to £99 this summer then it would become amazing value for money for this year.

Ozone is my new favourite thing. It's a beautiful, challenging and clever game that works perfectly to the iPhone's strengths. Controls like a dream, so far.

The music is so zen too. I'm playing it with my Sennheiser headphones, and I feel like I'm in a garden of flowers and clouds and babies.

Sending me to sleep a little though. Zzzzz...

£3. Might be a bit steep compared to some other games and I have no idea how much content you get for the money, but fuck - what can you get for £3? Nothing, that's what.

Edit: App Store Link

I watched some gameplay of that and he was bumping in to walls and obstacles and all sorts. How do you lose?

You expel air everytime you bump into a wall or hit an enemy, or even move for that matter.

Lose all your air and you pop. You have to make smart decisions between being speedy and being careful.

I've been playing this weird game called G.Blacksmith, which looks like its on some fucking crazy bizarro world sequel to the Gameboy if colour didn't exist.

I don't really get it yet, seems a bit too easy, but its kind of like diner dash. The learning curve is horribly slow though, and I don't look forward to going through all these early stages again if I upgrade to the full game.

Still, worth checking out from the graphics alone. I fucking love pixel art on the iPhone. 3D games generally look like utter shit, but 2D stuff looks amazing.

Edit: fuck, what is it with me and forgetting the iTunes link

Sigh.

And i just bought a 3rd Gen 8GB Touch. Hasn't even arrived. I chose the 8GB as i'm the kind of person that takes months to fill even 2GB of any device i use... Now i find out i'm getting a 2nd Gen device?!

How forked am i? Any compatibility issues with the more recent, powerful games (besides the ones that use the camera)? I know Espgaluda 2 (a game i meant to buy as soon as it arrived) already has issues. Is there any website that lists this kind of thing? Will i get slowdowns on other games, too?

If i'm not able to play the newest games at full speed, i'm not even opening the box, i'm just re-selling it.

Thanks!

It's a 2nd gen device. Looks like you're selling it.

That's not to say it won't run a lot of the games, but from here on out, it will be less able to run some of the more demanding software.

I've had a 2nd gen 8GB for ages and haven't had any problems with games. No Espgaluda, sure, but other than that it's fine.

Just saying, it's not the end of the world.

Though the 3rd gen is pretty zippy.

Most games will be fine on the 2G touch, and at least it's a good bit faster than the iPhone 3G (533 vs 400mhz). It doesn't have the RAM bump of the 3rd gen hardware, or the pixel shaders.

Not too many games are 3GS only, don't forget that the iPhone 3G (and 8GB iPod) are still being sold...and I think they're still the majority of devices out there (cause cheapness rules the day). That said, a big thing is that they won't have the new multitasking stuff in OS 4.0.

But Cave stuff is the real reason to upgrade. They're releasing another game this year! It'll be double the buyers remorse once that comes out and you don't have a 3rd gen touch.

As an 8GB touch gamer, I'd say an update to 32GB will probably make your life easier.

If your iPod runs low on memory you'll see framerates crawl and games crash. If you jailbreak you can show your current memory, and close processes or respring to get some precious memory back, but its a pain in the ass.

The only games I've had problems with, that being said, are:

Street Fighter IV is unplayable unless I've just resprung and push notifications are off.
Slowdown in PvZ is annoying, but bearable.
Some slowdown in Space Miner is a bit poo.
Gylder 2, don't even go there.

Some stuff is just better optimised. GTA CTW works fine, even though its chock full of memory hogging shit. NOVA also works great, much to my surprise.

That's just storage though surely? There's no difference in on-board memory between an 8 and a 32 is there?

I read that you're better off resetting each time you install a big game before you run any new stuff anyway.

No, the 8GB iPod Touch has 128 MB of RAM. The 32 and 64GB Touches have 256 MB of RAM.

Does anyone know a work around for the wifi dropping completely every 30 minutes to my router? from spending like 3 days trying to find a fix by trial & error and google searches it seems that the way the device uses wifi is just buggy sometimes, and can cause problems where other wifi items like laptops and computers never have a struggle.

My problem is that when playing an online game my wifi completely drops off after 30 minutes, only coming back when I revisit the touch springboard to allow it to reconnect, then it's fine again for 30 minutes.

is it a dhcp problem or something? I have tried everything under the sun, and I just can't go out and buy a new router, no spare cash and already on my 2nd router in 6 months, same problems. I also know it's NOT the touch that is broken.

Wow, the settlers is awesome! Almost exactly like the third pc iteration. Really impressive even though the art is not the best the series has to offer.
Though some kind of skirmish mode would be nice.

Which is probably the biggest reason Apple won't let it multitask. That extra 128MB makes a BIG difference. And the massive speed increase doesn't hurt :)

I want Cave Story on the iPhone, dammit.

nub question:

I bought a lot of games for my Touch - can I re-download them on my iPhone? Will they work on both, transfer the license, break?

You can transfer them. They'll re-download just fine, I believe.

You can re-download them (or just re-sync them from your pc) easily.

Try setting "ask to join networks" to off. Is your router connected directly to the ISP?

Sweet - so the central security check is just my store account right? It doesn't "care" which device? It's just that when I visit the App pages - they have no "memory" of my account having bought 'em.

Also, half of the people in this world with this problem have "LinkSys" with no security, set to join automatically. If your network is named "LinkSys" name it something else. Because as you move around the world, or even house, your iPhone will try to use the best network named "LinkSys" signal. Of which there are dozens in your neighborhood.

Think I already tried that but will take a look.

My network has always been modem to router to whatever connects to it, regular setup most places would use.

I just can't figure it out, after 30 minutes it just drops dead like someone turned off the router, but it's still on and kicking with no problem to anything else on the network, I've even tried running the iphone at 2am when all the other household computers are off and I still get a problem, I have also tried turning off many features of the rotuer and even setup a reserved IP adress for the ipod touch, I still get a drop after 30 minutes :(

It doesn't seen to be a problem, I did clear all network settings before and use a Dlink 615 using wpa2, I even get the 30 minute drop out using no passwords!

I think it's something the router does to renew the connection every period and the touch doesn't like it and drops.

I had something similar except it happened after like 5 minutes on the first connection. If I got it to reconnect it wa fine for the rest of the evening.

I solved it more or leas comletey by awitchig to wpa (previously I was just using wep). Now it connects like a champ. For the last two weeks I've only had two hiccups. One where it thought it was still connected to my work router, but a quick wifi off an on again fixed that. And this morning it did drop after I tried to use google maps, but reconnected in a few connections.

I think it definitely has to do with security and authentication, as well as reconnection, but only show it's hea with certain routers. Possibly it's to do with location services and using skyhook by looking at neighbouriNg wifi or something.

well, this is the first time i've introduced a game to this thread, and knowing how awesome it is, it's probably already been covered, but just in case it hasn't...

Sketch Nation Shooter

i'd never heard of the game, but i was watching Electric Playground yesterday and saw it got a 10/10 from Victor Lucas. the game is so cool and it's only 99 cents, so even if you're skeptical, it's just a buck.

in_battle.jpg

among other things, Sketch Nation Shooter is a top down shooter ala 1942, etc.

so what makes it so cool?

you get to draw everything in the game. the introduction screen, the fighter pilot, the enemies, the boss, the obstacles in the level.

screenshot.jpg

and you can do this multiple ways:

1) physically draw a picture on a piece of paper and take a picture of it
2) draw something in Paint/Photoshop and take a picture of it
3) choose a picture from your iPhone photo library

not only do you get to draw these things, but you get to set attributes too: how many hits it takes to kill an enemy/boss, what their pattern is, where and when they appear, etc.

the creativity you can implement in this game is where it becomes fucking fun. before i made this post, i created a level where:

you're the neogaf logo

shooting wave after wave of:

- roll-eyes smiling face
- a dick i drew
- a t-rex head
- oprah

and the level consists of dodging hands giving the middle finger. and the boss is a portrait of george w bush.

now not only can you create your own game, but you can both share it and download other people's games!

the game is totally worth a dollar, you should get it.

Since mine disconnects even without a password, must be something else.

It's so annoying, a lot of google awnsers to the problem ralate to something apple did to their wifi code, and it's nearly fixed completely by editing one line in some wifi code, amazing, but I am not jailbroken and tbh why should I just to get reliable wifi from something which cost me £164 :(

My last resort is to get the internet sent to my pc as it is currently and then use my pc to share the broadcast on another dongle, I done it with my 360 years ago but it's a pain to have the PC on just to use my touch for online gaming.

So, I just bought a 3GS two days ago and have bought a few games for it.

I bought it primarily as an MP3 player phone but figured some games to kill time with when I'm on the go would be more than welcome.

What a fun little gadget. A lot of the games I have bought remind me of early DS games back when everyone was actually incorporating touch as a central concept to the games.

I have bought

Beat it - great little concept
Canabalt - loved the flash version, fun little game
Flight Control - crack
NOVA - works surprisingly well for a FPS without any buttons or physical sticks.
NFS Shift - really fun little racer.
Squareball - interestingish.
Star Defense - pretty nice tower defense game
Words with Friends - all my coworkers have it and I love Scrabble

I just "bought" We Rule and Combra Command based on this thread as well as Soosiz.

Any recommendations on cheap games that are considered must haves?
Is there any game like the bombom slingshot mini game in all the Mario DS games? That thing is crack.

Plants vs. Zombies is an absolute must.
Dungeon Hunter is cool.
Zenonia and Zenonia 2
Doodlejump
Eliminate Pro
Underworlds
Peggle
Sketch Nation
GTA: CTW
Pocket God
Pocket Legends is an amusing MMO.

I don’t see Drop7 on that list. fix that, it’s the best puzzle on the system.

I’m also a big fan of UNIFY. it’s sideways tetris where you control two pieces at once to form groups of 4. gets batshit insane after a while and has great music, too. imo.

Space Invaders: Infinity Gene is also a really cool shooter with great style.

Yeah and it's not just a 2x thing. Once you take into account the system processes and actual usage, the difference in free memory is anywhere from 4-10x more.

Cat Shot is only somewhat like the bobomb...but hey it's free. Must Eat Birds (in the post above) is pretty awesome too.

Otherwise get Espgaluda II. You should be ashamed of yourself if you don't.

Farsight said:
I love that mini-game too, MUST.EAT.BIRDS. [iTunes link] is pretty much identical.

Ah, good. Thanks for the link.

My wish list is building far quicker than I ever could have imagined. I'm not sure if I have the patience to wait for the iPod Touch 4G...might have to spring for the 32GB soon.

If this is the wrong place to ask then just say, but I have been slowly working on a racing game app since last year and while the challenge is very tough, I have been looking for someone who can code. If anyone here is interested to help I would love to hear from you (I know how slim it is to find someone with spare time or the will to help!)

I have a thread on TA about it here, and also have my vision for the game in video form nearly complete, hoping that it will help attract some help on the coding side of things :)
