Impressively, it runs just as smooth on the 3GS. It's a well coded game for sure.
Did you have a chance to compare the game between the two devices?

I play ESP2 on my 3GS and I must say that there are times where the framerate is less than satisfactory. I play it only in "Large" screen mode, which definitely lowers the framerate though. Second level is a clear offender throughout, but not the only one affected. I wonder how Iphone 4 would fare on 2nd level with large screen mode?

I haven't made a particularly detailed comparison, but it seemed similar. I believe a lot of the slow down is simply a part of the game and is very typical of Cave shooters.

i'm having a rough time with pes. i totally take everyone's word that it's the best or near-best footie game on ipod but man is it rough to use the on-screen controller (and i rarely have problems with these) and have SUCH limited controls. surprised they didn't use the wii version as more of a base. that could be insanely fun on iphone

On their facebook Q&A, I asked about the Wii control scheme, and they said the screen size was the biggest factor in not including it. Hopefully with PES 2011 they could come up with something similar, though.

Definitely not the case here, because the framerate is much smoother if you play at the smallest screen size.

Kinda dumb if you think about it, as the large screen size is just upscaled smallest image. I have no idea why just upscaling it makes the performance drop so much.

After trying out Deadball Specialist rather quickly, I think the main distinction between that and Flick Kick Football is the pace of the game. I view DS as more of a simulation that requires careful, more deliberate controlling of the football, while FKF is more of an arcade experience. DS = hardcore, FKF = casual, if you will. DS also has a steeper learning curve.

For my tastes, FKF is more instantly accessible, more fast-paced fun. I think if I put more time into DS, I'll start to appreciate its finesse, but as it is now, I'm more drawn to FKF.

The quick play mode is rather arcadey in that its a "score as many as you can in 60 seconds" game - I don't even align my shots, I just use the default angle and kick accordingly, I like that I can just tap the screen to move to the next kick very quickly if I screw up for example. I've gotten to the stage where I can reel off lots of good scores very quickly and its a real buzz and you feel like you're demonstrating some real skill and finesse when you hit the bullseye repeatedly.

The other mode with the wall etc is more careful and is also something I enjoy.

Will give Flick Kick Rugby a try but I'm not much of a rugby fan.

(Flick Football is the one I noticed in the top 25, Flick Kick Football looks a lot nicer)

holy FUCK flick kick football is amazing. never been big on these kinda games usually, but there is nothing like a successful bend around like 6 defenders

WOAH guys Rayman: The Great Escape is on sale for $0.99!!! Good gravy!

Edit: Oops, didn't see that it was posted at the bottom of the last page. My bad!

ok Solitaire junkies... What's a good, basic form of Solitaire that allows me to play my own music library in the background?

Is the $0.99 version of Solitaire a decent go?

Been playing this sweet little side-scrolling beat-em up.

Controls are sweet, gameplay is smooth. Graphics look awesome too!

Critter Crunch says it's on sale and it's currently $1.99. Is that the sale price or did I miss a .99 sale? Always kind of assumed it was a default .99

App Shopper says it was .99 from April 14 to June 24, when it jumped up to $1.99. So I'm not sure why it says it's on sale.

Ah okay, thanks for the info. And thanks for the site! Hadn't heard of it before.

Only need two more achievements in flick kick football

This game is sooo good

Great to hear you like it.

Got the skinny on updates. The next one which has already been submitted is just an iOS4 update. The one which we will hopefully have submitted before the end of the week will have HD graphics for iPad and iPhone 4 and will come with a new mode (and presumably new achievements).

Now that iPhone 4 has a high resolution display, I hope developers will stop trying to take the piss with HD versions of their apps for iPad. I've only bought one (Flight Control), but there are a lot I am holding out on, hoping they'll just go the + route. Either that or iPad will be able to show high res iPhone apps at native res via an update.

I agree with Jonnyram, hopefully the iPhone 4 optimized games upscale to the iPad better. I'm hoping the HD same app craze was just to get the first wave of impulse buyers. I'm done doing it, hopefully others are as well and the devs notice.

This has become the most expensive thread on GAF, more than all others combined. So many awesome apps I have found from you all. Thanks <3

As long as HD graphics don't sacrifice framerate.

Currently runs like butter on the 4.

Split screen competitive speed flicking?

Sounds like some devs will be going for separate versions for all which is pretty obnoxious.

I understand devs wanting to make more money and I don't have much of a problem with that, particularly if they had to do work to make all new assets, redesign around a larger device if necessary (like completely redesigned UIs, or extra features like Flight Control's 2 player), etc. But if they already have existing iPhone and iPad versions, the iPhone 4 one should be probably combined in with one of those rather than yet another separate app (I'd prefer with the iPad version...but I'm mainly saying that as an iPad owner).

And yeah they should probably keep in mind there's a good chance the iPad will run them in high res with OS4.

Anybody tried iPhone games with iOS4 resolution (Real Racing is one of the few) on an iPad, upscaled? Presumably it looks very nice indeed?
they won't scale like that - it wouldn't be a simple case of pixel-doubling and the ipad doesn't even have OS4 yet in any case.

No, it uses the old iPhone graphics. Presumably when Apple rolls out iOS 4 for iPad, they'll put in that functionality

Those of you with iPhone 4's.. how do games look on the new screen? Any noticeable difference with the upscaling? (Games still running on the old resolution...)

And for games that have been updated for the new res, any performance loss from the increase in resolution?

Untouched games look exactly the same on the iPhone 4, imo. But games that are updated for the iPhone 4, like Real Racing, look incredible.

Mario,

a couple of things about Flick Kick Football:

- quite often the ball goes through the net
- if I hit the post and the ball barely goes in (takes a very heavy deflection), it doesn't register it as a skill zone hit. I think any ball going in after hitting a post should be a bonus-worthy shot
- sometimes if I hit the post, and the ball doesn't go in directly (for example, bounces off the crossbar and goes in off the post), there's a graphic indicating a loss of life, but I'm given a point and taken to the next shot, while still losing a life
- some shots deflect off the post in a weird way, and although I'm certain the shot will go in, it doesn't

Anyone have "The Quest" and some of its expansions?

How is it? And how do expansions work, it says you have to "enable" the expansion but how do you do it? Just buy it or? In any case I got this itch to play dungeon crawler and the Quest looks tasty :)

No, they look worse. They have that upscaled soft look and the lower quality assets stand out more. For example, NFS Shift is a very impressive looking game on 3GS that looks terrible on my i4.

If anyone's still playing Neo Nectaris for iphone or interested in playing it (or stuck?), I've finished my guide for it. Take a look here if interested.

Still have a couple more tactical iphone games to get through:
Archon Quest
Transformers G1
Rebirth of Fortune
Reign
Reign EP2
Rogue Planet
Song Summoners Encore
War3100
War Generation

Nectaris! Man I forgot I actually bought this game (and was excited for it). I still haven't launched it even once, just been too busy and overwhelmed with too many other apps.

I think iPhone is the first platform which I regularly pick up games for and quickly forget about, for a number of reasons :( Are games getting too "disposable?"

Thanks for great feedback Foob, and other nice comments in the thread. We put a lot of hard work into the app and its great to see it being well received. We just hit #2 rank on the UK Store which we are very excited about!

Tf53 - I have passed your comments onto the team and they are looking into them now. We've also noticed the ball goes through the side of the net occasionally, but its been very hard to track down the issue!

Also, if you haven't seen it, please check out our trailer - it should give you an idea of the spirit of Flick Kick Football :D

Cheap games do tend to feel disposable, but it really depends on your preference. Neo Nectaris does have quite a lot of content for your $5, seeing as it's a port of a console game.

So I got my 3g touch today and bought my first apps and games. I ended up buying the giant bomb app, zenonia 2, star defense, and tilt to live. I've got a few more bucks to burn, what else should I buy?

Carcassonne! (if you are into euro board games)

Fruit Ninja, Hook Champ (Which I still think is arguably better than Super Quickhook). There are so many good games out, check this GAF Spreadsheet out!

I was perusing the App Store last night and saw a game for the iPad called 'Vegetable Samurai'.

I mean. Really. That takes some nerve.
