I went ahead and bought Tiki Towers...

Totally worth a fuckin' dollar, goddam!

I wouldn't mind buying Rolando, either. Pretty sure I'd like it. I just need to stop spending money is all, and it's $10. ):

Hey GAF!

Are you disappointed with the Puzzle Quest port? Do you really want some awesome match-3 hybrid game?

Try Samurai Puzzle Battle - it mixes Match-3 with Risk.

Samurai Puzzle Battle is both a strategy game and a traditional Match-3 color game. The game places you in medieval Japan as one of several Shoguns looking to dominate the country. As a turn-based strategy game, you buy and deploy armies to take over adjacent territories. Each army can move one space per turn and is reminiscent of the game of Risk. Army selection, however, is a bit more detailed with a choice of a variety of creatures (see right), each with their own advantages and disadvantages.

In addition, each territory you take over may already be inhabited by native creatures which must be fought or others resources that must be won. Each time these battles or tests are settled by a Match-3 gaming session. Different symbols must be matched in rows or columns of 3 or more (like Bejeweled). Some symbols (fist) will cause damage to your enemy, while others will replenish your own resources (strength, mana, ki). Your match-3 skills are really put to the test as picking which colors/symbols to eliminate in response to your enemies will greatly affect the outcome of the battles.

Your goal is to overtake all of Japan, one puzzle battle at a time. The battles themselves are also intermingled with other Match-3 based challenges to increase your gold (match as many gems within a time period) or win over allies (remove all of one color from the board). These variants serve to break up battles and keep the action coming.

It's $1.99 for now, which I consider a steal.

Full version ($1.99)
Lite version (free, missing some modes and units)
Arcade Version ($0.99, doesn't have the neat campaign mode stuff)

Anybody here own that Line Rider game? From the reviews it sounds pretty good but I never see it mentioned here. :l

Yes, it's awesome. But it's exactly the same as the free flash version, but imo worth it. Great fun :)

For some reason it annoys the hell out of me that the #1 paid application for the last two days has been iFart Mobile - Fart Machine for all ages. :(

In the Canadian Store, Simcity is number one.

Stay Classy, Canadians!

How do the controls work?

Impressions. NOW.
Well, you move with your thumb at the bottom left of the screen. You can move forward, backward, and strafe in both directions. The bottom right of the screen is to fire. The top right and top left are used for aiming (iron sights) and reloading. The aiming is done by tilting all around, but it works really well because it's a fixed view. Your viewpoint doesn't move, the gun moves. This was really disorienting in other FPS games on the App Store (Cube).

Anyways, the whole idea of the game is that you you escort a flock of robotic sheep to home base (a shack with a green field around it) after fighting off waves upon waves of aliens. The graphics are great for an App Store game - the alien zombies turn into green mush after you kill them, there's a flashlight on the end of your gun that looks great, and the overall models and textures are very impressive. There's an arrow at the bottom of your screen always pointing you in the right direction, so you never get lost. You get money for reaching the shack and even more if all your sheep get there with you. You can then use this money to buy better weapons.

TouchArcade has a review/impressions here: http://toucharcade.com/2008/12/29/alien-mangle-a-simple-and-fun-first-person-shooter/

The video isn't that great.. it's like he doesn't know how to play. But it gives you a simple idea of how it plays.

AlienMangle is also getting a big update in a couple days:

- Bigger movement area to touch.
- Change the way the touch area works so that once you touch, that determines the centre, then the direction you move your thumb from there is the direction you move.
- Feint movement area indicator so you know where you have to touch.
- More zombies that didn't make the first release
- option to switch reload and zoom
- classic mode zombies that spawn in front and move slow
- Fix the point blank shooting bug
- I also need to change it so that you can walk forwards faster, some people are having trouble working out where forward is.

How's that? ;)

Woah, this looks awesome, plus with MP coming? I might just bite. What are some other good RTS's that aren't Tower Defense games?

Just got a Touch! So awesome!

Anyway, I'm not sure if this is the right place to ask but can you guys recommend some apps? Also, is the Brothers in Arm game on the app store any good?

How is Hero of Sparta?

Decent.

Fake edit: It's alright. Controls aren't too bad, the graphics are pretty nice, but there's not a lot of meat to the game. It got boring for me after a few sessions.

And what about Katamari? Is it cool now?
Thanks!

Samurai Puzzle Battle restores the faith that the shoddy port of Puzzle Quest tore down a bit. One of the few iPhone games that's really got me itching to turn the iPhone on just to play it.

It seems a little easy though - I picked a medium difficulty shogun, but there's not been much challenge in the campaign I've been playing so far. I lost a couple of battles but have won the vast majority. I'm still trying to fully understand the way all the game pieces work on the puzzle grid and every once in a while you get blindsided by a hero character that manages to zap all your unit's energy in one match.

But it's got the right balance of conquest and looting which always makes for an addictive game. Nice 16-bit visuals, good responsiveness, very easy to get sucked into a long game session.

Game needs to have vibration turned off by default (every iPhone game should). There are some events that just have the iPhone practically buzzing out of your hands and it doesn't take more than a few seconds of that to drain the battery pretty significantly.

I'm part of the problem then because I purchased it over the holidays. I have the woopie-cushion widget for my Powerbook, I needed something for the iPhone.

Also I am suprised, I am reading that not many of you have the game Fuzzle (http://appshopper.com/games/fuzzle) on your lists. You should give this game a try, I think there may be a lite version of it. Not much to describe it except that it is simple and addictive as hell. Well worth $1.

Don't buy Brothers in Arms. The controls are a mess.

I know that a lot of sites don't have a dedicated iPhone section yet, and this was something that myself and the good folks at thegamereviews.com wanted to fix, so they're opening up a new iPhone-only channel. I'm currently directing the channel and I'm in charge of what games and apps will be reviewed, and as always, I want to put GAF first in helping me pick. Since this is a brand new section, we're currently busy reviewing older (but awesome) games, but when this initial chunk of work dies down, I'll be taking personal requests from GAF exclusively as to what games you'd like to see critiqued.

So at any time, if you'd like to see a game reviewed in a traditional fashion on the site, post here or shoot me a PM. We're trying to fill the wants and needs of the hardcore audience, so I've turned to GAF to let them decide what kind of content they'd like to see.

When the channel launches with its new content (at the start of the new year), I'll make another post in here. I probably won't create a new topic, because I'm not all about advertising anything. I will, however, try and throw updates in the other iPhone review thread.

So anyway, if you guys have wants or suggestions, shoot them here or (preferably) in a PM. Or both. =P

I really like it. The update made it a lot easier to control. There's still framerate problems, but only when the katamari is changing in sizes.. and it lasts for like three seconds total.

So far i've downloaded

Alien Mangel
Warfare Inc
Tiki Towers
Samurai Puzzel Battle
Space Deadbeef
Jelly Car
Snail Mail
Topple
Tap Tap Revenge

This thing is so cool. :D

Crayon Physics Deluxe is coming out for iPhone in the next couple of days and it will cost $4.99, Hudson is publishing it.

They have updated their site with info and a video which you can find here.

What I got so far:

App Store:

Aurora Feint beginning (puzzle rpg)
+ Very polished interface
+ Smart use of tilt
+ Different feel from lotr/jrpg crowd
- Pauses to fetch info on worldmap/transisting, framerate not perfect

Fieldrunners (tower defense)
+ Runs very well
+ Looks very clean
+ Great controls/interface
- Art is cookie cutter, no interesting themes, lack of story

Hero of Sparta (god of war clone)
+ Controls well, gameplay ideas straight from gow and done well
+ Good animation
+ Great music
+ High production values by iPhone standards (cg intro, fully 3D world with eye candy)
- low framerate
- no voices in otherwise cinematic package

Warfare Inc (rts)
+ Great controls
+ Represents the rts genre pretty genuinly
+ Plenty of content, also user made maps
- Art is so so (char avatars in dialog terrible), framerate is semi-slow (though not choppy)

Lightsaber (gimmick)
+ Everyone needs this one

Cydia (hacked iPhone):

Quake 1 shareware: (fps)
+ Best possible interface (overlay)
+ Runs well considering it's a hack job (22-30fps)
+ It's Quake 1 so it's awesome
- Crashes a lot

I'm trying to buy Bomboozle for my iPod Touch, but it says the "item is being modified. Please try again later."

Any one have any ideas when it might be back up?

Know what'd be awesome? If SEGA made a SeaMan game for the iPhone. There's really no good virtual pets for it, the graphics are possible, it has a mike and a touch screen.... I think it'd be perfect.

*dreams*

Anyone get Guitar Rock Tour, or whatever it's called, from gameloft yet? Mixed reviews on the app store so far, but it looks decent and I love the tap tap games.

I have it. The tracklist kind of sucks outside of a few songs. Loading takes too long.

It's only $5.99 now, right? Eh I guess it's worth that much if you absolutely want another music game.

What's everyone's opinion on the best kart/racing game for the iPhone. I've stayed away from this category up until now.

The best pure racing game is hands down Fastlane Street Racing. It recently got a huge update, overhauling features and functionality. It gets hard pretty quick, but it's awesome. Reminds me of Ridge Racer a lot of times (there's a bunch of drifting involved).

As for kart games, the only one I've played is Crash, and it's pretty darn fun.

I haven't played them all exhaustively, but I think Snail Mail is a good time. Has pretty tight controls.

Also I've been liking Crazy Tanks.

for 1st gen touch/phone - raging thunder (rumor has it the developer is working on an online versus mode)
for 2nd gen touch/phone (3G) - fastlane street racing.

actually both games run on the older hardware but fastlane has performance issues on the slower hw.

all that may soon change with the release of low grav racer.
