Grabbing Pirate Wings for 99 cents. It looks like a pretty decent clone of Diddy Kong Racing. Hopefully I'll get a chance to throw some impressions up later today.

2XL Motocross is very impressive, but I'm not sure how long that feeling will last, as the feature-set is pretty shallow. Very, very impressive gameplay, though.

Edit: This game feels like MX Unleashed. It has the graphics of a PS2 game, and plays like one as well.

Yeah, I agree. It's really fluid, the game looks impressive, the graphics smooth and detailed and the controls work great (I'm currently using the virtual d-pad).

I really can't understand the lack of a career mode, but that could be coming in an update, I guess.

I've read that the 2XL team have members that worked on Motorcross Madness, back in the day.

I tried out the lite version of this a few days ago and it blew my mind. Almost certainly the most full featured, polished iPhone game I've seen.

It got me interested in the Power Pros for DS game actually...

I just picked this up but I'm finding it a bit choppy and disappointing. I wish iphone games had better frame rates.

One game that is helped a lot by restarting your ipod before playing.

I've been AFK on this forum for about eight months, but I thought I'd chime in on the games I have for my iPhone (in no particular order):

Significant lasting power: Quordy, Fieldrunners, Galcon, Drop7, iShoot, 21 Pro, wolf3D, Rogue Touch

Quordy is an exact Boggle clone which is about a zillion times better than wurdle. You can play asynchronously with friends by mailing them challenge boards -- once both have played, you get results. The latest update added badges (like achievements), and it gives you all the stats you could want in terms of high scores, percentage of words found, etc.

21 Pro is a great blackjack/card-counting simulator which has been helpful in practicing strategy in case I ever get back to Vegas. There is a free, ad-supported version which is otherwise ungimped.

I know there has been a lot of discussion about the other games, so there isn't much to add. iShoot 2.0 has a metric fuckload of replay value with the new rules editor -- you can make custom weapons all day long and try them out. (BTW -- is there any forum where people are trading particularly good formulas for weapons?) Wolf3D really is an impressive port (and great for me, since I never beat it on the PC), and I want to encourage iD with my wallet. I can't get into TD games that much, but Fieldrunners is fun for anyone. Ditto Galcon -- I suck at RTS games, but it has enough difficulties and modes to make it accessible. Drop7 is a fantastic puzzler. Rogue Touch is being actively supported by the developers, and it has honestly made Roguelikes fun for me for the first time.

Very good, but still too early to tell: Eliss, Frenzic, Slotz Racer, Edge, Rolando, Vector Tanks, Droidz

Eliss is very creative and truly something that could only be done on the iPhone, but it's very hard, and I dunno how much I will enjoy it in the long run. Frenzic is a decent fast-twitch puzzle game in the Tetris mold (sort of), but I dunno how deep it is. (Great production values, though.) Slotz Racer is a slot-car racing game that has a track editor and has been fun, but I haven't played it enough yet to have a strong feeling about it. Edge is polished and fun, but I've also barely played it. Ditto for Rolando -- I started playing it, thought it was great, but decided I should go back and beat LocoRoco before playing a game which was obviously inspired by it. Vector Tanks is so retro it hurts, but it's very well-done. If it gets expanded to include UFOs or other enemy types, it might be a keeper...otherwise, it's going to be an amusement. Droidz is a faithful remake of Paradroid, which I never played but always heard raves about. It's a very interesting game, but I'm still learning the ropes.

MY favourite games for the iPhone include:

DDR S: It really is the real deal. Occasional lag might annoy, but for the large part it works, and it works well. You might think it silly to 'dance' using your fingers. Indeed, you might think it's akin to playing DDR with a joypad - what's the point? But to my surprise, the harder levels have you in a flurry trying to complete the sequences. I recently went back to my favourite DS game, Ouendan (because I just picked up a DSi), and it's still as fun as ever, but the multitouch smoothness of DDR on iPhone is pretty damned good and I'd say gives Ouendan a run for its money.

Tetris: Again, the real deal. I had Tris, but was unsatisfied with it's lack of true Tetris rules. The controls and presentation are top notch. It's not quite as good as a d-pad, but suffices. IT won't ever replace other Tetris versions with real controls, but is a good time waster. The only problem is it doesn't have an endless mode.

GeoDefense: Probably my favourite TD on iPhone. It's cheap, simple, but technical, and pretty challenging. The graphics are enough to get the job done, but carry their own charm.

The Creeps: Another charming TD. It oozes charm, in fact. It's pretty easy, and a very simple game, but I prefer simplicity in my 'phone' games. I have 7Cities, but that seems pretty deep, something I'm not really looking for.

did you see how apple are doing a competition to celebrate the 1 billionth app store download which is coming up soon?

ONE BILLION!? in well less than a year - didn't it only launch July last year? Thats insane. And as its all 3rd party stuff, thats 30% for almost nothing. I expect the app store to make Apple more profit than the music store at this rate.

oh, the prize is pretty good. Macbook Pro, ipod touch (!?) and a $10,000 itunes card. Enter by downloading any app from the store before the 1 billionth app is downloaded

Rogue Touch is another game that deserves some pimping simply because the developer has done a heck of a job with post game support since it got released.

Ah, thank-you! This is quite nice. It's also good to hear that the developer is working on it.

I especially like that it auto-saves, it really suits the iPhone. I think more developers should allow players to resume where they left off when they start a game again.

0_o whoa I didn't know this existed. I'm buying this game and Galaxy on Fire since John recommended it on ListenUp, plus Galaxy on Fire reminds me of zero gravity and wing commander.

I keep forgetting this thread exists.

You might want to hold off on Galaxy on Fire until its gets its first update which should be relatively soon. They are going to fix a graphic bug and add some difficulty options which the game is currently lacking and a few other things. I stopped playing because I wanted to wait for this as the game is a bit frustrating on the difficulty meter without it.

THTouch = best poker game on the App Store. All actions are controlled by gestures. You hold in the middle to bring up a command wheel, then swipe in the direction of the option you want to select. You don't have to wait for the wheel to pop up either, just swipe or tap and go. It's very fluid and very useful. Swipe right to call, swipe up to raise, swipe down to fold, and swipe left to deal again once a round is over. Tap twice to check. The AI is also very believable, unlike most poker games in the App Store (especially Apple's own poker application). It's only $.99, so if you're looking for the definitive Hold'em game, look no further than THTouch. Disregard the low score on iTunes; most of them are retards who took no time to play it.

Any reviews of the (apparently) numerous comics readers? I just heard about myComics and this new .zave format :0
Comiczeal is probably superior, they create their on proprietary space-saving/battery-saving file format before you transfer to your iPhone/Touch.

But in all honesty, you really owe it to yourself to head to your local library and see what their comic/graphic novel selection is like. There's really no match to holding the physical thing in your hands and being able to pour over the artwork.

So I bought Drop7 after reading the awesome impressions here, pretty cool little game. I'm still trying to grasp the overall strategy though - mainly dealing with the '1' blocks. Every time my game ends it's because of these fricken 1's I can't get rid of.

Any tips or tricks someone wants to offer to best deal with those jackasses?

I bought a bunch of the games on sale on touch arcades site. A lot of them I'm enjoying so far.

You were late. It was up Friday and Saturday.

If you get a bunch clumped together, the best strategy is to try and eliminate the gray blocks underneath them. Depending on which blocks are eliminated, that might leave your "1" blocks standing all by themselves on more than one occasion, taking them off the grid. There's usually no way to eliminate them from dropping blocks on top. :)

My problem is that I constantly get into situations like this:
IMG_0004.png

Once you get to one layer deep of low-numbers like that, you're screwed, and I can't figure out a way to get out of it. Is there something I'm missing? Otherwise, I'm starting to think that it's simply an oversight, a bad design choice here.

Just avoid that, it's pretty easy to get rid of 1s and 2s, but if you keep stacking them, yes, you're pretty much screwed, but it's not due to bad design

Just bought Pop-a-Tronic.

It's a match 3 puzzle game from an established mobile developer.

$1.99 and you get a free PC or Mac version of the game too.

Oh, what's the best way to get iTunes links for stuff? I usually e-mail them to myself...

If you right click the icon in App Store it should say copy iTunes Store URL

Question for anyone that has used the SDK or developed an application of similar fidelity to the games on iphone:

I'm looking into jumping into iphone app development (as more of a hobby than anything) and am going to need a mac of some sort to do this with. Would a basic macbook (the new one) be substantial enough for coding and testing games or would I need something more pricy like a MB Pro to get the power needed? I don't plan on making anything with a 3-D engine any time soon.

Any info on this subject would be most appreciated.

A regular MB is more than enough even for 3d Apps, don't worry

That baseball game looks pretty... terrible.

I won't comment since I don't own it but the early impressions seem relatively decent to good on it. I'm a big sports fan so eventually I'll get around to picking it up and I'll give impressions.

Yeah, maybe the video capture was bad but it seemed choppy somehow. Nice to have some competition for baseball superstars and this one seems to be much more RBI Baseball-esque. I will give it a shot if there is a lite version, but I don't want to double dip on baseball games just yet.

After all this time, I finally found an iPhone game I actually like. Krypton Egg.

A stupid name, and initially not very appealing being 'another breakout clone'. But the game is fun as hell to play, with powerups dropping at a ridiculous stream. If you watch that video above, after about a minute you'll see what I'm talking about.

Fucking hundreds of balls flying about the place.

And the soundtrack is incredible.
