I haven't tried all the games but MotionX Poker supported your own music via the shortcut player (double tap the HOME button)

sadly it didnt work for Aurora Feint too

Oooh I didn't know about the double tap, Trism supports iPod.

Whats so good about Motion X Poker? I'm genuinely curious. I was considering buying it but I wasn't sure what it was... is it like a video poker type game? Because poker games like that usually don't interest me without money (like the Texas Hold'Em game, no way I'm buying that unless I can gamble with it).

It combines the gimmicks of both the Wii (waggle) and the 360 (achievements) into one deliciously addictive package.

I've been playing several games for some time now:

Labyrinth - a really good little "roll the ball through the maze" game that has some really great ball physics and movement precision. It's $7 which may seem too much for a simple game like that, but there are 500 levels available, and really, it's as close as you can get to a real game of this kind - it's just that well simulated. The game runs at 60FPS which gives it that much more realistic feel.

Zen Pinball - Framerate seems to be locked to 20FPS which is really disappointing for a pinball game. It just feels choppy and shatters the illusion of having real ball rolling there. It's that much worse considering that the actual ball physics seem really good, and the table design is interesting.

Trism - quite addictive and very nice overall. Fun to control too.

Super Monkey Ball - The best graphics and presentation of all the Iphone games so far, and to be honest I don't think the controls are as tough as some made them be, but they are not a walk in the park either. I have been able to finish all the ten easy levels without failing once on my first attempt - but I missed many bananas. Maybe all the 'training' I had with games played with Sixaxis made this easier than it is for some people, I don't know.

Still, I'm not sure how the progression in this game works exactly. I have the crown (means I collected all the bananas) on 8 levels, and some bananas still missing on two levels. What I don't get is how exactly is this crown on a level earned? It seems like as soon as you die once on any given level, you have no chance of earning the crown there, unless you start the game from the very beginning? Is it really possible that it's this dumb? I don't see any way how to jump right into a level, it always has to go from the beginning, and it sucks playing all the way up to level 9, collecting some bananas there, then dying, and then when you respawn on that level, collect the remaining bananas and finish the level - you don't get the crown. Do I even have to collect these crowns or should I just keep playing on Hard levels (which are all completely different from the easy ones)

got the crash bandicoot racer and i all i have to say is that it has serious framerate issues - the average is quite low for a racer, but the dips it takes are even worse.

Damn, Monkey Ball is impressive because it gives a glimpse of what the iPhone is capable of (great graphics/presentation) but the controls sucked ass.

Wish I had spent the 10 bucks on that Critter Crunch game.

The lack of free trial editions of these games (and most apps) is really going to make me hesitant to buy anything unless I read 3 or 4 opinions on it.

Of course, I did that with Super Monkey Ball and that did shit all for me.

And yeah most of the VG industry tweets. Just find a couple of them, and you can find the rest. B/C they're all connected to one another.

Get Twittelator, sooooooooo much better than Twitterific, and totally free with no premium version.

re monkey ball, it's an interesting experience for somebody with a strong banana bitz background. essentially, the sense of control is quite different from the wiimote-based incarnation, so if you come into it with banana blitz motor baggage prepare to spend a good deal of time un-learning that. the overall dynamics are quite different - controlling the iphone version feels somewhat like a truck compared to the wii version, but that is easy to adjust to. what is a bigger hurdle is the reverse-direction move - it's _nothing_ like on the wii version. part of it comes from the overall slower responsivness of the iphone version, and part - from the pronounced inertia & dampening effect in the iphone version. to use a simplistic comparison, the reverse maneuver on the iphone feels like an underwater version of the wii one.

all that said, once one climbes the learning curve, it's a fun little monkey in a ball.

Anyone else notice that tilting the phone in MotionX Poker makes the shadows on the dice change as if you're moving the light source. Nice little superfluous touch.

Crash Racing is so nauseating. I don't even think I can play it anymore. Super Monkey Ball is my favorite, but there really need some accelerometer adjustment setting because my iPhone almost ended up as one my broken controllers.

Word. The very first thing I downloaded was (free) Twitterific, but it's incredibly slow and is missing quite a few basic features. Twittelator though is light weight and totally awesome. Plus it has the panic button in case you're ever kidnapped or something ;o

So far I bought Cassia Chess, Sudoku, Tetris, and Motion X Poker.

The only one thats a bit disappointing is Tetris, although its not really. Its a great game, but its much harder to get into "the zone" because touch controls will never really compete with button controls at the higher level speeds. Its really well designed for touch controls though, the downwards flick to hard drop is particularly satisfying and it has really nice production values.

What I don't understand is, since the iPod/iPhone have wifi/internet, why more games dont have a multiplayer component. If the DS can do it with its much more rudimentary wifi, then so can this... I'm hoping for free updates adding this.

When's the next wave of Apps supposed to hit?

Also, does anyone know if iTunes checks automatically for updates to Apps we've purchased and downloads them?

Agreed, and I'm not paying $10 for the non ad version of Twitterific. BTW, I'm Enojado on twitter. Feel free to ad me to your list.

The app store icon on the phone will tell you if there any updates available. It uses the same flag as Mail and SMS. You can then upgrade the app right on the phone. It's brilliant.

Honestly...none of the games are doing anything for me. I'm perfectly happy using my PSP for games, and buying the OCCASIONAL, iPhone-unique game when it comes out.

Yeah, I feel like this was just the first round of rushed-out software. I'm hoping developers will take their time and make some really great games for the future.

Yeah I snagged Dizzy Bee. It was actually made by a friend of mine so I jumped on it. For $3 it is a great alternative to Monkey Ball and plays like a cross between MB and Loco Roco.

Overall I have been having a lot of fun with it. Graphics are great and the sounds are funny as hell. I hope that Igloo keeps making iPhone games if they continue to refine their programming they will be giving the big boys a run for their money.

Was this ever meant to replace the PSP? I'll use my iPhone when bringing out my PSP is not an option.

SPORE!!!

(I hope)

The best games so far have been pretty basic puzzle games. Fun, but nothing like what can be found on the dedicated gaming platforms.

The SDK has only been available for 6 months. Give studios around the same dev cycle as they would have on a PSP or DS game and more unique, interesting stuff will come out.

edit: Enigmo is pretty complex, but most of the levels were ported from the existing desktop game. On a related note: Buy Enigmo - The Incredible Machine, but with fluids.

I'm having trouble with my Apps. It's not loading them all onto my iPhone and when they are on there, it only will open then for just a moment before closing them. Any idea on why this is? I also tried getting them from the App Store, but I could not get a connection. =/

Edit: I think it was because I hadn't registered yet. I think it's working now :)

Nope. Pandora and MotionX Poker are bringing me back to the main screen after about 1 second.

As far as the Apps opening for a sec then closing, just shut the phone off (holding the top button for a few sec) then try again. I had same prob.

FYI - Scrabble is an atrocious memory hog. When I first downloaded it, it couldn't even load to its start screen menu fully without crashing. I had to completely cycle the power on my iPhone to get it to run.

Bought that...tumble bee game or whatever the hell it was called for $3, it's really great.

But how the hell do you change the volume? This is way too loud.

how's the game other than that? I'm a big fan.

MotionX was a huge disappointment.

I want a Yahtzee. Preferably with MotionX mechanics.

It's okay, i think people are making a bigger deal out of it than they should. There's no skill involved what-so-ever. Even Yahtzee and Texas Hold 'em need some type of planning, even if it's majority luck.

You have to appreciate Aurora Feint for what it is. It's essentially a demo for a purchase version down the road.

Has a puzzle quest port been announced yet? Or the sequel maybe?

Apps store needs:

Flick-CNTRL: "Assign flicking functions to directions of your phone, application specific. For instance: flick up to attack key in Warcraft III"

Logic Pro Control: "Assignable knobs and faders for synth functions and mixing." Tech is already in development for Pro Tools I see a larger use for Logic Functions considering its synthesis based and has a heavy emphasis on modulation.

Melodic Lines: Basically the PIANO app with midi functionality and storing, I can't believe this wasn't included in the original. It's the only reason I didn't buy the damn thing.

2nd Mon: Assignable area for monitor manipulation, this was an app under jailbreak why isn't it ported yet? This could be extremely helpful for people who use things like photoshop and want to lock their tool box to a certain area of the screen and manipulate it with the iPhone/Touch (for instance). Should have a 'LOCK' function so the screen doesn't move.

Stacks AKA App Hider: Why is there no way to hide useless apps like Youtube and Calc? Why? It's so easy and it was in the jailbroken apps, just port the damn thing and ask us $2 for it, I'd bite.

Dictionary Updater: Have you ever been on AIM typing...and said "fucking"...and had AIM magically rewrite your sentance to "mother ducking idiots!"...well I have...and it sucks. Just let us add to the dictionary...please?

Offline Google Maps: Area specific downloads for offline map viewing/directions. Would only work on the iTouch because the iPhone is always 'online' as long as you have signal.

That's about all I can think of. I'd pay $5 for most of those, $10-$20 for things like Logic Control or 2nd Mon.

All applications access the iPhone's dictionry, which auto-learns as you use words more. After a few uses of Fucking it will stop trying to change it to ducking, and will start making it a suggestion when you misspell it. Just make sure you tap the X when it suggests something you don't want.

Oooh, thanks :-)

to the attention of mahjong connoisseurs: http://midnightmartian.blogspot.com/

ed (after an hour spent with it):

at first i was rather skeptical, but now i can state that this is the best mahjong i've laid my hands on. regardless of platform and lineage. i won't the spoiling it for you, though - try it for yourselves : )

Well, I take most of the useless and/or very rarely accessed apps and put them on their own "desktop" screen and keep my main "desktop" clear. That's a similar option.

I keep 4 apps on my main screen, 8 on the second, and the third screen is already full.

My music icon is the only thing in the bottom dock.

I just think it'd be really easy for them to clean up the clutter with a stacks app is all, I don't even have that many programs...

Cool. I remember seeing the stacks thing in some screenshots of jailbroken phones so it seems it could be useful.

I tend to move most of the media playback into secondary or less positions of importance (iTunes Store, iPod control, etc.) simply because I hardly ever use the device to play back any media. Now, when they get a 32GB+ model out there and it can completely replace my iPod 5G then I'll use it more, but right now the actual communication icons (phone, email, etc.) get the places of prominence on my phone.

Oh, and does anyone have any recommendation on which Sudoku is the best? I'd like one to use, but there's like a million of them to choose from!
