meh so far on crystal defenders. It really is completely a port and not optimized very well for iphone control at all. The bottom half portion of the screen is completely wasted. It's not very well animated.

I prefer the other tower defense games. Game probably has more depth in the sense of maps and such I would guess but I'll pass based on the demo unless someone purchases the full version and gives good impressions.

playing the light version of this game, not exactly what I expected. Thought it'd be more of a final fantasy tactics, its more tower defense...I dont understand why the screen is so small, with the big circle taking half the screen for selecting. I dunno, im gonna wait on some patches, see if the price drops before I pick this up

How is the bottom half of the screen completely wasted? Looks like that's where the controls are. If something important was down there, your thumb would always be covering it up.

whos thumb is that big? they coulda used the wheel as 1/4 the screen, or took off the wheel completely and just tap your units. The units look way too small and text is hard to read

You can either do that directly on the screen by touching stuff or having a little mini-panel at the bottom of the screen. Both 7 cities and Field Runners control better than that demo and neither of them do it by wasting half of the screen. It simply doesn't feel like an iphone game. It feels like it was made for every other cell phone on the market which might be fine on those but it shouldn't be that way on the iphone.

So I finally said screw it and went ahead and bought Rolando. This is after spending money on Sim City. :(

But, just like with SimCity, I was pleasantly surprised. Rolando looks great, is very smooth in its presentation (love the fold out 'pop up' book look of the world map) and the one thing I was concerned about - controls - isn't really much of an issue at all.

You can tell this was built for the phone. Very well thought out.

I've only played through the first 'world' so far, so I haven't really dug into the features/levels yet. From what I understand there's a lot more that opens up to you as you go along (the title screen seems to hint as much).

Overall, though, definitely one of the best games on the phone. Really like how this new 'wave' of games is showing marked improvement in building for the platform.

im gonna pick up rolando this week because of everyones commentary about it, but hows sim city? Ive played sim city once or twice on pc, I like games like those, but how does it run? framerate issues? anything? worth the $10? how many hours of game play will I get?

I've only played a little bit of SimCity (I hear it gets a little bit slower as your city grows and I have had a crash or two), but so far I am very impressed. Someone said this was practically SimCity3000, and it really feels like it.

So far I found that it's pretty loaded, great presentation and graphics, and they've done a very good job of creating an interface that works on the iPhone. It's a little more barebones in terms of presentation (say, for example, I haven't yet found a way to get detailed information on a certain building you are about to build), but a lot of it hasn't changed much if you've played it before.

There are nice little touches that help with playing it on the iPhone (like, say, if you are laying down roads the buildings will go transparent and you'll just see the color-coded zones so you can put roads down with no problem) that really make it feel like it wasn't just a half-assed port.

Like I said though, I haven't had too big a city yet, so I don't know what kind of technical issues will pop up as I go along. So far so good.

Cyrstal Defenders seems like it's actually pretty decent, albeit a bit easy. Just a little tip for you guys, they give you a closer view if you hold your device sideways. It also gives you a speed option... but you can't actually control it from that view, so it's pretty pointless.

I have a rule: Everytime I work overtime, I spend the money on the AppStore. I worked OT tonight, so time to buy more Apps!

I'm getting Crystal Defenders. Anything else I should grab?

Oh man, I don't like being the guy who tells other people how to spend their money but please do not buy this game. It's truly, truly awful and ports like this should be discouraged. It's the worst port I've played on the iphone yet - the bottom half doesn't even simulate a track pad. It's more like a cell phone # pad or an ipod trackwheel. Incredibly sluggish. And there's borders on the side of the gameplay half of the screen. And rotating the phone zooms in but you can't issue any commands when you do so and it switches back to vert once the wave is over. It's embarrassing how sloppy this is.

I picked up some new games tonight as I prepare my iPhone for some upcoming trips.

Dr. Awesome - Wow, I wish I had gotten this sooner. Qix + iPhone Contacts == Brilliant. I wish it had touch controls for when you don't feel like tilting it around all silly, but it's not like that doesn't work fine as is.

Rolando - As good as everyone says it is. Wish it was a bit faster though, like Loco Roco.

Tap Tap Revenge (Updated) - Still sucks at higher levels due to excessive lag.

I Love Katamari (Updated) - Oh my god, it's actually playable now! Still a little slow, but it's a massive improvement over the first version.

ESPN Cameraman (Updated) - Still the best game on iPhone, for real! Awesome photo hunt game that just got updated with new pictures, all of which is free.

I didn't get it yet. I tried the demo and it wasn't terrible, but it does need polish.

I don't know, maybe the App Store has caused me to lower my standards for portable gaming. That would be pretty sweet, actually, because I haven't touched my DS in months. :(

Just dropped the $8 on I Love Katamari. I don't know what it was like before, but I can say that this version is very playable. It's fine. Sure, the framerate drops when changing sizes, but is it really that big of an issue? I'm happily surprised by my purchase. :)

Im wondering if theres a app that lets you store any potential apps that you may wanna buy that doesnt cost money...im just looking through a bunch of sites and yea I could save them in notes but there has to be a app for something like this...anyone?

Is this game still available? I bought it a while back, but when my g/f was looking to get it, she couldn't find it on the app store. Was it temporarily removed then re-added?

Rolando - Great
Dr. Awesome - Awesome
Dropship - Lame

hmm you dont like dropship? I thought the same initially the first few levels I played, but after you get a hang of the controls, its really quite fun shooting

So now thats its been a day, whats the word on Crystal Defenders? Worth it or not?

Most of the reviews I've seen floating about seem positive, but I can't get over the interface. Instead of going with an all touch-screen control scheme, they split the screen in half and do the whole virtual control bit on the bottom half. If you can get over that (I can't!), it seems like a good deal.

Man, Rolando sure grows on you, at the Fire area now and now that the levels are getting longer its really picking up. Really loving it at this point.

Maybe I suck but those challenge times are bullshit.

I only played two levels on the shitter and hated the controls, ill give it a second chance before I go to sleep.

I don't really like Dropship either. I think it would have worked better as a 2D game with simplified controls.

So I bought SimCity last night and this crashes like nothing I have ever played before, I haven't even been able to successfully build a coal plant without it crashing, WTF EA.

try restarting the iPhone. some apps need the memory wiped or they'll crash.

yeah, it sucks, but hopefully it'll fix your problem.

7 cities vs field runners.... which one to get?
I'd say 7 Cities, unless you hate fixed path TTDs (and prefer freeform/maze, which FieldRunners is).

7C has more depth, more variety, and the towers are more flexible (through the upgrades)

You could just get them all in iTunes on your Mac/PC and tell it not to sync them over to the phone.

Edit: Nevermind, I read your question wrong. It's too early to be Gaffing.

Side note: Has anybody picked up Brothers in Arms? I saw a video of it that looked amazing, but is it actually fun?

Puzzle Quest is exactly the same as the DS/PSP/XBLA versions, except it's only 1/3rd of the game. I'd still recommend it because it's fucking Puzzle Quest.

So I got a Touch for Christmas, and I'm slightly ovewhelmed by the amount of apps out there. I'm looking for some suggestions of what to get or try out.

I found toucharcade which is a pretty good site in terms of some reviews and info, but I'd like to hear from other users.

So far I've got:

Vay (Sega CD yay, never finished this)
Orions (neat little card game)
Tap Defense
Tap Tap Revenge (the free one)
Hangman
Aurora Feint (the free one to try it out)
