While the PSP's screen is a lower res, it sure seems to be able to push alot nicer looking visuals than the iphone. At least the stuff I've seen on iPhone so far. There is nothing that comes close to Ridge Racers for example.

Exactly. Show me one 3D game that looks even close to a PSP game. People saying iPhone has equal/more power than PSP is utter bullshit. iPhone will never be able to push a 3D GTA like PSP could.

Fuck the premium games store.

Oh yeah, forgot about them. Amazing for a game like that on a portable device.

Is the 32g a 2g?

The first gen touches were available in 32gb I believe.

Utter BS, eh? So, you are a 3D game programmer and know the exact specifics of both game systems? Demanding someone show you a 3D game is worthless, because let's see a PSP game that cost under $10 when first released, that looks as much better than the iPhone as you are talking about. That's the whole problem with the iPhone, sure it has power to spare, but for under $10, no company can afford to make a game at full PSP quality.

So anyways, here's what looks to be the best 3D on the system so far: rumored to be a game in the rumored premium app store, Need for Speed Undercover (HD YouTube video of a game system) Oh, and this footage is a month old, so it's possible by the time the game comes out it could look even better.

People like this guy? I think his name is Mcmack or maybe Kamack or oh wait a second its Carmack. Whoever the hell that is

When you have created some of the most technologically advanced engines around I might start to listen to you. Until then Cmack's word>yours

As for NFS that thing keeps getting delayed. It might very well be due to the premium store.

I bought Fieldrunners yesterday and I'm having a blast with it. Good to hear there is a patch coming in a few days with a new map and tower. I hope there will be a few more maps yet as I've unlocked endless mode on both maps already.

Here's what my crossroads map looked like :D They never even stood a chance:

Carmack reckons it's almost on par with the PS2 and orginal Xbox? I'd like to believe it since 3d stuff on it so far has been incredibly underwhelming from a performance standpoint.

Edit: Wow that NFS movie looked impressive.

I call for a change of the thread name to "The Official App Store Thread (iPhone/iPod Touch)".

seconded.

also, I just got crayon physics and it is, indeed, awesome. I love the physics based puzzlers on this thing (Enigmo, fantastic contraption)

The 3D capabilities of the iPhone are even more amazing when you consider the fact that developers have only been working with it for 6-7 months. Developers were probably working with the PSP for at least a year or two before the system was even released.

Also most of the iphone games right now are home made, some use pre made engines like Unity but to squeeze the most out of the system a big company needs to spend some money, I guess this is why we are getting a 20 dollar section.

Brought it a few days back, fun game but the level's drag on a fair bit. I have to pause to rest my thumb or hand depending on what controls I use.

The iPod Touch 2G seems to have more power than the iPhone 3G/iPhone/iPod Touch 1G.

Part of this is that it doesn't have to devote any memory or processor timeslice to handshaking with cell towers etc. but yeah, it is. Damn it. I am kind of thinking about getting an iTouch on top of my iPhone :( I never wanted to become one of those people...

Great game, you should also check out 7 Cities, another really good TD.

Unless once the Premium games start hitting and they perform exceptionally well on the 2G Touch compared to the iPhone, the difference hasn't really been that noteworthy given the state of the current quality of the games on the App Store.

Holy crap dude. Looks like my exact tactic, except I space out lots of level 3 electric towers.

Can't wait for the update. Such a pure game.

Not to, like, be a downer or anything... But what's so special about these TD games over others? And why buy more than one (i.e., Fieldrunners and 7 Cities)?

Isn't this a case where once you've seen one you've seen 'em all?

Don't get me wrong, I love TD. Haven't bought any of these yet -- but I'm interested, is why I'm asking. :D

I'm not sure. I was mainly just looking for the best tower defense game and then leave it at that. I tried out Tap Defense which was free and it wasn't too bad. Didn't like 7 Cities much though. I bought Fieldrunners and I definitely think it is the best TD game by far, it's very polished, looks great and a lot of fun to play. I'm not interested in buying another TD game.

By round 90 or so I had 6 electric towers in a row in the middle of the map. It was my gauntlet :) They work great when placed in the same spot as they kill a target and move onto the next one quicker.

Well the 2 are rather different in their approach. Fieldrunners is your standard TD game with up to 4 entries/exits whereas 7 cities follows a defined path which changes with each stage, plus it has a lot more upgrade options than Fieldrunners. I really like Fieldrunners but it is rather limited in terms of stages, units, upgrades etc, hence why I bought 7 cities as well.

edit: here is a youtube video of 7 cities that will give you a better idea http://au.youtube.com/watch?v=m00JF5JiuSM

First PSP devkits appeared about 6-7months prior to launch. First 'sort-of-complete' SDK was released less then 1month before launch. The fact iPhone is 4 years younger then PSP makes the latter much more impressive IMO.

What about within the two different approaches to TD? i.e. the build-your-own-path and the build-along-the-path. Are most of the differences there just feature sets? Like, I have more tower types than you, nyah nyah!

Anyway, Fieldrunners looks more my style, I think. Will probably buy that soon!

I do see what you're saying but for the small amount of change they were both impulse buys, anyway, each to their own.

I believe both games have a free lite version so just download them and make your mind up that way. :D

I absolutely love that iShoot gained all this popularity instantly by releasing iShoot Lite. Since then, you've seen an explosion of Lite apps. I can constantly rely on waiting for an app to release a Lite edition now, instead of blind-buying everything at first sight.

That said, the Lite editions of both Bounce on and Chuck the Ball were a success. I just bought both. :) Very fun apps.

The updates for the X-plane games are MINDBLOWING. Now he's added multiple areas like san fransisco, chicago, new york, california, hawaii and so on for free. Plus it keeps looking better.

While the video does look great, lets look at the facts. The texture work was awful, the environments were very, very closed in and it looked like it was the same set of buildings you were going past over and over, there were 3 cars on screen at a time MAX, and when he started going fast you could see the framerate going a bit wibbly. Yes, that does look superb for an iPhone game...but I'm just saying.

I don't mean to hate on the iPhone as a gaming platform, because I adore mine, but it's much better at 2D, Gameboy style games than 3D PS2/PSP style games.

EDIT ^^^ HOLY SHIT Pinball Dreams, I loved that on the Amiga on the day. Wonder if it still holds up?

How is X-Plane is probably one of the most high price games I would buy if its worth it. Love dicking around in flight sims.

Also been playing FieldRunners on the train this morning, when did they update it with a new map. God I love the iTunes App model of releasing a app and updating it to add value for free and sales when the devs wants its great.

Also Slot cars any fun? heard that was getting a big update

The game is really promising, simple but fun. It's going to be released soon. :)

Pinball Dreams is now out on App Store! (http://tinyurl.com/bf38jc)

Made by Digital Illusions (now DICE) of later Battlefield & Mirror's Edge fame, it shows that they had talent even back then.

It's my favourite pinball game of all time, with classic Williams tables (reworked): http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pinball_Dreams

Great news. This is one of the great classics I enjoyed in my Commodore Amiga.

It's basically a flawless adaption from PC to 'Pod, and it's gotten better with each update. Obviously it's more limited in scope, but now we're starting to see over 1000 airports so it's not small at all. It's not any easier or more accessible, of course, so you have to like flight sims to enjoy this. The controls work superbly, though, as good as any joystick. Graphics really good as well, REALLY good, but I'm still waiting for buildings to pop up in cities (though the textures have gotten progressively better).

Wow I never expected Pinball Dreams, now please give me Pinball Fantasies!

I'm currently playing SlotZ which is such a grear slot car (scalextric) game. I love the track builder, and the new update coming sounds amazing. :D

I have been hoping and praying that Tower Bloxx got ported to the iPhone.

Thank you for making my dreams come true.

I don't get the love for Rolando. I got it a few days ago at the cheaper price and found myself bored of it within 20 minutes with no desire to go back to it.

Ahhh, awesome. I remember playing that game a few years ago on mobile. I think it even came pre-installed with a couple of Sony Ericsson handsets, as well, when they were pushing their 3D gaming capabilities.

Creep is the best tower defense game on the iphone in my opinion. Field runners is pretty limited and basic - no idea why it gets such overwhelmingly high praise.

Saw this earlier. Very interesting times ahead for the iPhone. Flash on this thing = unlimited possibilities.

Ya, but that's why apple didn't want it me thinks. Free flash games = less sales in the store.

Rebel Onslaughts ok for 59p (I had no sound tho?)

Gona bite the bullet with X-Plane then if its that good and supported I'll throw £6 at it. (Downloading Now)

What are?
Lights Off
Fuzzle
Enigmo

Tempted with
Pinball Dreams
SlotZ
