Biohazard Degeneration 800 yen. Seems to be up already, but not interested personally. *paging cvxfreak*

Supposedly its a port of the mobile/NGage game. I watched a video of the NGage version a while back and it looked decent. I'm not sure if I want to drop $8 on it though...bah, who am I kidding. I'll buy it the second its up.

I just noticed that Wolf 3D Classic is on sale for $2. It inspired me to write this review on another forum.

Readers Digest version: Do not hesitate, buy this game immediately, especially for $2.

Long version:

Wolfenstein 3D for the iPhone/iPod Touch is arguably the definitive version of Wolfenstein 3D. It contains everything that made the original PC version excellent, while adding some technical and gameplay features that update the design for modern sensibilities.

The core game remains untouched. Wolf 3D is the granddaddy of FPS, and while practically every aspect is simple compared to modern games, the game remains fun. Let's not spend too much time discussing the basics, since you and I know them well. You explore Nazi fortresses floor by single level floor, doing battle with Nazi soldiers and their zombie experiments. The game is divided into 6 episodes, and each episode culminates with a boss battle against some ridiculous person. You cannot look up. You cannot look down. There are 3 weapons, and each one completely replaces the one before it. There is treasure to be collected, dog food to eat, and secrets to discover.

So what then does this version of Wolf 3D bring to the table? Oh my, so much.

First, while the graphics themselves are largely untouched, performance is impeccable. Framerate is very solid, only occassionally dropping during very heavy activity (and even then, usually something non-game critical like picking up 30 treasures in fast succession.) The game is played with the phone/touch in landscape, and it renders in widescreen. This has very little effect on gameplay, but it certainly makes the game look better than chopping off the sides (hi, DOOM XBLA.)

I want to emphasize untouched. None of the gore has been removed (and it's kind of funny how little gore there is for a game that created so much controversy with its violent content.) More importantly, none of the Nazi iconography has been changed. You are still surrounded by Swastikas, Iron Eagles and other Nazi decorations. And yes, that man still awaits you at the end of the third episode.

The controls are done via the touchscreen. Real talk: they ain't the greatest. But once you get over the initial learning curve, the game's rather pleasant to control. One very nice thing is that the open door button has gone away. Doors open when you walk into them, and the same is true for secrets. This is the kind of "dumbing down" that I can get behind.

You have the option of splitting up turning and strafing for true PC Gaming style control, but I opted for the default which has no strafing and maps forward, back and turning to the left side of the screen. With a little practice, I was exploring maps with ease and plugging Nazi's from across vast hallways.

Speaking of maps, Wolf 3D features a real time map that updates as you explore the level, and can be accessed at any time. It makes searching for secrets much easier, as you can see the overall layout of the map and get a better idea of where hidden rooms might be located. The game also informs you when you've killed every enemy on a floor, or found all the treasure, or all the secrets. A nice touch.

Finally, and this is kind of a simple thing but something I came to really enjoy, there is no quicksave. The game autosaves whenever you exit, and that's the only way to record your progress. If you are killed, it's back to the beginning of the map with full health, the basic handgun and 8 bullets. What is cool about that is how it adds a very arcade style feel to the game. Instead of quicksave jumping through hard encounters, you have to exploit the strength you've built up over the last floors, or else start over with the basics and build yourself back up again. This also encourages you to explore for secrets, since that's often the best way to re-arm after dying.

I love Wolf 3D on the iPhone/iPod Touch. After playing it for a while, I decided to fire up Wolf 3D on my PC. Get that real feeling, fingers on keyboard and what not. After a few minutes, I went back to the iPod version. It's just that good.

Many, many words, and we're back to the beginning. Wolfenstein 3D for iPod Touch/iPhone is incredible. At $2, it is inarguably the best game on the platform. I paid like $10 for MGS Touch, and that game is a complete piece of shit compared to Wolf 3D.

Don't sleep, go buy this game.

Buy Wolf 3D on the iPhone. It's the best Wolf 3D gets.

I'm waiting for Doom.

God forbid you take $2 out of your DOOM Classic fund. We are in a recession, after all.

I don't want to play Wolfenstein 3D, I want to play Doom. Is that too much to ask? I don't see why I should have to pay money for a game I don't want to play.

Nice review, though. Thanks for that.

What I'm saying is that you're wrong for not wanting to play Wolf 3D. You should fix whatever part of you is wrong.

Wait, what the hell? Get out of my party. We play Wolf3D while waiting for Doom. Also, what Draft said.

Fair enough. I might get it I never really played it much before, though - I think I played it on the SNES. Do people scream and shout "kommen sie!"?

All the voices are the same. I have no idea what they are actually saying.

When you kill the blue guys they shout, "Mein laben."

When the brown guys see you, they say something in German that I've always thought sounded like, "stop, son!"

Peggle is fucking amazing. Wait, do I even have to say that?

I just wish it was more of a complete package, like the DS version. It's got challenges and Nights and an overarching level of completeness.

Peggle iPhone is damn sexy, though.

Already mentioned but I'll go ahead and post the screens.

Resident Evil: Degeneration. I have no idea if its decent or not but the file size is pretty small for a game of this type which often isn't a good sign.

My expectations for iphone games graphically generally somewhere in between the DS and the PSP for the big budget titles. That looks roughly like a DS game (well a completely awful DS game graphically to be fair) to me so it isn't crazy outside of expectations. That being said I'd probably prefer to just see a port of RE 1 or RE 2 or RE 3 than this title.

Man, there need to be more adventure games for iPhone, akin to Famicom Detective Club and Shadows of Destiny. I need more creepy murder mystery adventure games. :(

There is a price difference you know.

Agreed, I wish Capcom would make some Ace Attorney games for it :/

Well, at least (judging by the video) it runs at a good framerate. That's what kills a lot of the enjoyment of some games for me (i.e. Chronicles of Inotia).

I've never played Peggle before. Heard so much about it though so I downloaded it to my Touch about an hour ago. Went to go take a shit and try it out. I was on the toilet for 45 fucking minutes because of that game. I was done shitting in 5 minutes but I just kept playing and didn't pay attention to anything else. Fuck I love playing games on my iTouch.

Also finished Terminator today. It was pretty good, some mindless repetitive fun. I'd probably give it a 7/10.

Ewww. Crusty.

What does the Starship Enterprise and a roll of toilet paper have in common?

They're both there to wipe out Klingons

SuperPac: The scary man boobs scare me.

This version of Peggle is definitive. The wheel + touchscreen is godly, the graphics are crisp, and I have it in my pocket at all times.

Peggle iPhone turned out as good as I hoped it would :D

agreed. I played a bit and I really like the dual aiming interfaces. And I got a totally sick Extreme fever on the 3rd level (hit 3 orange pegs including a long shot and then the final one was a bounce off the bucket back up to clear the stage) and I was hooked all over again.

I saw a video of that resident evil game and it looked teeeerrrrrrible. they were flicking around a virtual analog stick to try to aim for the heads of the zombies and missing constantly. horrible, horrible looking controls.

I'm having problems with Peggle on the iPhone. No Music in background, only SFX. Yes, I have sound on, and don't have iTunes on. Any suggestions?

Heh. I was up until close to 4am. It's a good game, and certain has an addictive quality about it, but something is not hitting me right. The addiction isn't the 'oh my god, this is so awesome!" kind of addiction. It's more like "I just have to finish this level, even if I hate it" kind. Don't get me wrong, it's a good game, you could certainly do a lot worse, but...I dunno...just something... it's like I nearly feel like buying the DS version instead - that sounds more 'definitive'.

Any version that doesn't have online internet play isn't definitive. Each version of peggle has a couple of things to recommend for it including this version.

This is a very good version on the iphone. It has a few things that keep it from being the definitive version.

No online leaderboards.
No online multiplayer.
No Nights although I'm guessing that will come as a microtransaction once 3.0 hits.
Little bit of slowdown on some of the more complex maps.
Missing music which hopefully will be added or fixed in an update.

It's still a highly enjoyable version.

Have Peggle.

God damn you Popcap.

*shakes fist*

The dial and button input is a godsend.

If this doesn't hit number one, Gremlins are at play in the App Store.

It looks pretty legit. I have no idea how you can differentiate between tricks though. When you hit the 'grab' button, how do you know which of the possible 8 grabs you are going to do?

Looks like the tilt direction determines the trick type.

It's already at #12 in Game which is pretty impressive considering it just released yesterday. I'm guessing it will be difficult for it to hit #1 though on the games chart simply because 99 cent apps always have the advantage in unit sales which apple stupidly uses as a measure to rank the top list.

I was referring to the MAc version - I don't have the iPhone version.

Oh. Sorry. I just read it quickly and assumed.

But I understand your comments - I don't imagine the iPhone version (or any version for that matter) to be different beyond features. My fault, this IS an iPhone thread.

G from Soma Games $4.99

The game "G" from Soma games has been getting really good reviews from the app sites. I've personally been seeing 8's & 9's.

What makes this game cool are not only the graphics, and the voice over, but the physics engine to shoot the rockets in space.

Check out video of the game here.

Description: “G is set in a futuristic Earth where the player builds and launches sounding rockets to explore increasingly complex fields where obstacles, power-ups and gravitational bodies interact with the rockets path. G is short for gravity, the primary functional element in the game, and this game comes in the shadow of a long line of gravity simulation games like Gravity Wars, Dome Wars or Spaced Penguin. By accounting for the pull provided by these bodies, the player can create looping rocket paths that bring a single rocket within sonar range of multiple targets in a single mission earning extra points.”

Surprise people love the RE game. It looks very dumb in the video. The zombie seems like they can dodge bullets (because the hit detection is so bad). :lol
How long is the game anyway?
