Based purely on the trial of Vanguard Storm, I thought it was quite good. Unique style of play, slightly like Plants Vs. Zombies (they couldn't possibly have copied it considering Plants Vs. Zombies was only announced, like a month ago)

It's kind of like PvsZ, except you move your troops each turn, each one has different abilities (Soldier can only hit directly in front of him with two squares to the side, mage shoots 3 squares directly in front, archer can only hit diagonally)

It's quite fun. Might buy it a little later :)

For some reason the game looks more appealing to me than Crystal Defenders. I'll try out the lite demo later today. For some reason on a person level I like it when a dev makes sure the lite version and the full version hit at the same time. Strikes me as a more professional way to conduct business. A part of me hopes the Square Enix games do well so they have a real incentive to port over their "real" back catalogue.

Also Peggle is up to #6 on the top games list. Impressive for only being out a day and it's price relative to what is generally at the top of the list. Although Myst was able to get as high as #4 at one point and currently sits at #7.

Having the demo appear at the same time as the game is the best thing for gamers, but in terms of sales it's probably better to have a demo come out later. Without a demo you can get those few people who buy it straight up, start telling people this game is great or whatever, geta bit of a movement going, and then create a second wind via releasing a free version letting sales rise once again.

Same reason why you see high priced games go back up and down all the time. You have to create demand - same reason why you see PopCap raise and lower their game costs so much :)

I want an MP3 player, and I'm thinking about getting the iPod Touch so I can play some games I wouldn't otherwise be able to play.

Will I be okay with an 8 gig, or should I spring for the 16 gig? Basically, how big are most of the games?

This is a great thread, by the way, it's helping me put some games on my radar.

Update on Car Jack Streets 1.1 update which is being submitted which means we probably get it in a week or two based on if it passes its initial time or not.

Good game that I wanted to play and like and thought was kinda cool but the driving soured me from playing it. I'll be happy if the new driving controls allow me to enjoy the title.

The update dramatically bolsters the already expansive title by adding a range of new features and fixes including:

*Fully interactive “Jack City” map available from your GPS

*All major reported bugs will be remedied once players install the update

*New ‘steering wheel’ control method for casual players and increased button responsiveness

*Increased Lives. Now players will have five chances to pay mob boss Frankie, making the game less harsh if you miss a payment

*Randal can now carry up to five weapons at a time and cycle through them at will

*Players will have the option of returning to their condo safe house to save weapons and vehicle before exiting the game

*Two new vehicles. The destructive Sports Utility Tank and the Sky Copter

*The ability to play your own iPod music in the game

*All new, soon to be announced in-game competition

Update 1.2 is already in development at Tag Games with a targeted release date for early June. It looks set to further expand the games features plus include improved menus and multiple languages.

The developer is also working on a free survival mode mini-game release for Car Jack Streets called Car Jack Streets: Survival. Inspired by games such as Smash TV and Geometry Wars Tag hope it will both appeal to those yet to purchase the game as well as existing CJS fans.

Most of the games are only a few Mo. I have an Ipod Touch 8Go and you'll be ok with it.

Most of the big premium titles fall into the 100 MB or slightly larger size range. A lot of the really great games from non big publishers are around 10MB or even less. Myst is currently the biggest game at over 700 MB.

So while a 16 gb isn't necessary, I would have bought a larger size model in my iphone if I had the chance way back when. If money is tight you will be fine with the 8gb model but if money isn't an issue I'm always of the opinion that getting the larger size option is the better choice in the long run just for the combo of music, video, and game options it allows.

I have 54 games/apps and that takes up 1.37 GB.

I think I'll be OK with my 8GB Touch for a while as I usually only keep 5-10 albums and less than half my apps on it at a time.

It depends on how much music you plan on putting on there and how many videos as well. I currently use up about 13 of the 16 gigs on mine but I have alot of music and videos. The apps actually take up the least amount of space on mine and thats including Myst.

Unison sent me a list of around 100 titles to check out when I get an iPod Touch, and assuming I buy all of them I'll have used around 4 gigs or so. Game size really isn't a huge issue at this point.

DS is a bit clunky though - very low res. Is the iphone version better in that respect?
Yes. Visually, this is on par with PC version, with some slowdown on shot being fired and the final Extreme Fever effects. it's the best looking portable version (unless you count macbook as portable :lol )

However, I still give control advantage to the DS, and, after playing Nights on DS, and having the yellow pegs, I now wish the yellow pegs are in all other versions of the game.

How big is that Square Enix game? If I can download it over 3G I'll pick it up right now (gotta hit the bathroom soon!)

The full version is 45.5 MB but there is a lite version so you should check that out before buying the full game. It's the same size although since I don't have a 3G I don't know what the size limitation is. Isn't it like 10MB?

Yeah, 10MB

Thanks for the feedback, everyone!

Good to hear. Any chance I could take a look at that list?

It's such a good game. Definitely my favourite tower defence so far, on any platform.

That one took me a while as well. Also, Sneaky Snake was a tough one for me.

I agree that this game is awesome. :D

I have a Instinct with sprint service now. I want to get a iphone but with the rumors of a new phone out June if i should just wait at this point.

Are there any RPG games out right now for it? I like the square enix defense game and i am sure i would pick up peggle. What are the top 5 best games out for it right now?

Also on a side note any better deals on getting service and unlimited texting other then what is listed on the website?

Thanks!

yeah except now with the ability to lock lasers its made it almost too easy. For Gordy and The Hat you its easy to just shock and laser while on the straights.

I liked the lite version. It's a relatively simply strategy game where you position your troops to attack the enemies and stop them from reaching the other side. Different units have different attack ranges and different attack patterns along with different health and weaknesses. You have like 15 seconds to repositions your guys after every attack to get them into optimal position to do damage. Its different than your usual TD game. The only thing stopping me from buying the game is making sure it has enough waves for there to be a little depth there and challenge there.

Vanguard Storm is another game that ignores the mute switch! It can go to hell.

That Wolfenstein RPG tease from a few days ago hurt bad. I want it so bad! I want it now. :(

I am very curious to play the Resident Evil game after such great words from the people who played it.

Does it have a story though? Does the character talk? Or is it another shooting gallery only this time you can move?

There is a big old thread on touch arcade you can look through for some of these answers and impressions.

RE is fun. It's actually the type of shooter I'd prefer on the iPhone. I didn't like Terminator and Brothers in Arms, because it was like trying to take a console game and just barely make it work on the iPhone. Games that play like Resident Evil seem to work much, much better. Controls and gameplay are great. I heard a bunch of people complain about the graphics, but to me, they're fine. The game runs at a steady enough framerate to make the game more that much more enjoyable to play, regardless of how [for example] low-res a character model might be.

Wait a month if you can, they'll likely be announcing new iPod Touch models along with the new iPhone models in June.

Grr to both of these things as well! Blasted. Vanguard Storm seems OK otherwise, though I wish S-E would put a little more effort into the animation/framerate for their iPhone efforts. They're not making great use of the hardware, and we all know they are capable of pushing hardware much harder.

On a side note, I had to exchange my iPod Touch 2G today (dust was starting to get under the screen somehow, they said there was probably a sealing problem somewhere), and I just realized I left my charge cable at my brother's place. Argh! It's sitting here taunting me with the stupid "I need iTunes before I can become a real boy" icon.

I also need to find a new case; I had a glare/screen film thingy installed on this Touch by one of the guys at my local Apple Store - who, by the way is some kind of fucking screen protector ninja who installs these things flawlessly in all of five seconds every time - and realized my iClear case actually doesn't play very nice with it. I'm pondering just skipping the case and carrying it around in my "iPod Sock" thing (don't judge me motherfucker), but I live in fear of the horror stories about the back getting scratched to hell.

new iPods aren't until the fall (usually September)

Apple pattern of updating new hardware:

January - iPod Shuffle (not this year)
March - Desktop
June - iPhone
September - iPod/iPod Nano/iPod Touch
October/November - Laptop

Not perfectly accurate, but it's about that.

Agreed... but waiting a month or so will get the guy the 3.0 software included instead of having to pay 10 bucks for it. not a huge deal but it might be worthwhile.

and, yeah, there's an outside chance of a storage bump on the Touch as well

Vanguard Storm review. Sort of echoes my impressions that's its a pretty neat little game.

I like tower defense games, and even though I was disappointed that the first Crystal Defenders (pre-update) played it so safe and did not try to make use of the iPhone's strengths, I still enjoyed it to a degree. I have no hesitations about Vanguard Storm. This is an excellent riff on tower defense. The rhythm of the battles plays out exactly like the 8-bit RPGs I grew up playing, but the extra wrinkle of moving your defenders makes them feel new again. I honestly do not know if Vanguard Storm is borrowing this mechanic from another game I just haven't heard of, but even if it is, that doesn't make Vanguard Storm any less fun.

Vanguard Storm is tough, too. After cakewalking through the first ten or so stages, Vanguard Storm turned up the heat. I found myself replaying stages multiple times, trying to get just the right defender strategy to stop the incoming waves. But I was never frustrated. I did not feel like the deck was unfairly stacked against me. I just needed to come up with the right arrangements and make smarter defender positions. That's the sign of a great game, really: you lose, but you know why you lost and you are inspired to try again because you feel like victory is not being artificially withheld.

Vanguard Storm also trumps Crystal Defenders by actually looking at home on the iPhone. The extra real estate allows for a good-sized battlefield. The touch controls make moving units around the field very easy. The defender and monster sprites are colorful and nicely drawn. The music is also quite good.

Vanguard Storm was reviewed with version 1.0.
Closing Comments
Vanguard Storm is a great fast-moving strategy game. And if you are getting a little fatigued with the whole tower defense formula (I wouldn't blame you), Vanguard Storm offers a cool take on the concept. This is like tower defense mixed with a classic Final Fantasy game. The game is priced at $4.99 right now, which I think is very fair. However, if you are on the fence, give the freebie lite version a try. I think you'll like what you see, especially if you like tower defense-style games.

STP Exclusive: Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 2 on iPhone Confirmed
53 minutes ago — by: Steve Palley Tags: News
Earlier today, we ran into a YouTube video appearing to show off an upcoming iPhone version of Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 2... but we held off posting the news, because we weren't sure it was real.
Until now.
We've just received confirmation with developer Lti Gray Matter (the shop that ported THPS2 to the PC back in 2000, incidentally) that the video is legit. And although we don't know whether it's coming to the App Store yet, it looks freaking awesome.

Might we see Mr. 900 in the App Store?
"It is completely real," Lti Gray Matter president Dan Chavez wrote to us in an e-mail.
"We developed an engine & tools to push the bleeding edge of the iPhone's limits. That's why the graphics, sound & frame rate are so good in the demo. We used THPS2 strictly as a 'test subject' and not at the request of Activision or anyone else. By the time we were through, THPS2 was fully on the iPhone and performing even better than originally anticipated.
"We have let Activision know that THPS2 is ready for QA if they want it."
And that last sentence is the major caveat here. Activision Blizzard retains the rights to the Tony Hawk IP, and that means that THPS2 doesn't get published on the App Store without its say-so.
And unfortunately for us Tony Hawk fans, Chavez isn't sure this will happen anytime soon.
"My feeling is that unless there is clearly mass desire expressed for this game, sadly, it may not make it to the Apple App Store," he said. "Truly a shame, because it was one of the most successful games in the franchise."
So, there you have it, folks. A gorgeous-looking port of THPS2 is locked down and ready to go, should Activision Blizzard decide to pull the trigger.

Yeah I just saw that story on Giant Bomb. If the game is already ready to go what harm would there be for Activision to publish it?

We had a discussion in the thread back around GDC time about why Activision was so slow to get on board with the iphone and EA by comparison was all over the platform. Especially since Activision has partnered with other companies to put out cell phone games.

Make little sense to me to not have franchises like Guitar Hero or Tony Hawk on the platform.

Activision will probably have several issues that prevent them from publishing it without larger changes such as around licenses to name/likeness of Tony Hawk and other skaters, music, and other branding.

In all likelihood, there was a 3 to 5 year limitation on original licenses, plus they may not have all covered platforms outside of PC and console.

In the scheme of things, stripping these things out and replacing them wouldn't be too much of an issue though.

You do still see games like Tony Hawk 2 in the BIG BYTES cheap PC catalog. I wonder if they've since removed the music from the disc.
I'd love to see Tony Hawk 2 on XBLA and PSN but you'd have to make several changes. Probably remove videos, remove all characters but Hawk and basically use the player creation system.

It would definitely need to keep the music though.

I think most licensing agreements allow for games to continue to be sold at retail, but restrict further manufacture or wholesale sales.
