Perfect. I don't want anything touching my music. I've spent a fair amount of money on it and playing it is just fine, but doing anything else is not.

It would be very easy to simply have a toggle that allows or disallows it rather than punishing everybody because you don't want it touch your music. It could be done on an application basis or just a general setting for your iphone. So your paranoid fear is unwarranted.

I see your point. But imagine all the complications that could occur. Imagine once the flood gates were open the amount of apps that would start streaming in that do 'helpful' things to your music library. Then when you plug your phone back into iTunes the database no longer recognizes half your library and wipes it all.

I think Apple are right in not allowing such access. Not only the issues that could occur with database corruption, but simply the amount of money some people have spent on their music potentially being damaged.

I've never had a problem with Audiosurf destroying my music collection on the PC. If coded properly with proper library instructions and coding for the program there is no danger to it on the iphone. Apple is free to do whatever they want but I can guarantee you they are passing up big sales on apps that we haven't even envisioned yet and a real unique selling point. There was a lot of excitement from the fanbase when it was assumed music library access would be allowed in 3.0. There was excitement for a reason because it opens the door to a lot of cool potential ideas to be explored by regular devs. It's also a fan friendly move as it doesn't make me pay for a limited track app to do a guitar hero rip in the most simplest of examples.

There are levels of access between "permission to do everything" and "nothing at all". Read-only access would be all an app like Audiosurf would require, and -- by virtue of the access being read-only -- it would be impossible to mess up your music database.

Who gives a shit? Your library exists on your computer, the iPod music is just a copy. If it deletes anything from your iPod just resync it and you're fine.

That's a bit bizarre, though honestly it's about time. It's more than it costs on the Xbox Live Arcade though.
It's overpriced relative to the market but they probably feel they can make a good bit of money at that price on the name brand alone. They are probably right.

In an unrelated note Assassin's Creed is also now $5.99

I have a question about game saving on the iPod/iPhone.
After buying so many games on iMachine I am running out of space. I don't want to carry too many unplayed games with me all the time. If I remove it from my iMachine, will I lose all the save on it? Or does the save stay on my iTunes, and if I later sync it again the save will be there intact?

Will someone answer my question please??

Reading the impressions for Sonic on TouchArcade, I think it's really disappointing that Sega can put out a port of such an old game at $6 and not even nail things like the framerate. There's no question the iPhone has the hardware to run the thing just as smoothly as the original, porting issues or not.

I'd rather see them release something on the platform that doesn't require fast and precise touch controls, like any of the Phantasy Stars. I wouldn't even be able to bitch about the framerate with a game like that, and we all know how badly the iPhone lacks decent RPGs.

No, your games are not saved if you delete the app from your phone. Since Apple is marketing the device as something that plays games, you'd think they would have made something like this more of a priority. I made a post about this a long time ago, but nothing has changed since.

Just wanted to say thanks to everyone on this site who helped with the following...

Trixel just made New and Noteworthy, and hit the Top 10 puzzle games and the Top 50 Paid Apps today!

We knocked the price to 1.99 and we're announcing new content soon!

You lot rule. Thanks again :)

Is there any reason why Apple isn't letting devs use music? Phase and song summoner were my favorite ipod classic games, and they'd both be better on touch.

Glad to hear it. I definitely bought it because of your posts in here (and uhh, it was $1, and I'm cheap). Enjoyable game though, for sure.

Congrats! I'm happy you're doing well! I want you to become rich from this so I hope it works out!

I was also looking forward to a version of song summoner for the iphone. :(

EDIT: I hadn't even heard of phase before. Now I'm even more annoyed since this is roughly exactly what I'm talking about.

I'm obsessed with Trixel at the moment. Ob-fucking-sessed. So really, thank you. It's brilliant.

I just don't want anyone knowing that I own a Toto best of, and that I rated 99 as a five star song..

I bought World of Tunes (1.99), Critter Crunch (.99), and The Creeps (.99) two days ago, they are three very different type of games and they are all very good.

I still can't believe how cheap these games are. Would have sold for $30 each had them release it on the PSP or DS.

How odd. I can't stand World of Tunes, have no opinion of Critter Crunch, and absolutely adore Creeps.

all this nonsense about not being able to Actually Use music in apps
Hm.

This is very disappointing.

If they're not going to allow "analyzing" the songs' data, what exactly are they allowing? I'm confused! ):

Guys, never do business with Armor Games. Do not support them. Do not buy Shift. I'm serious. They emailed me about making games based on my Three Hundred project. They stopped emailing and Shift shows up and their website two months later, with no credit to where the idea originally came from. They are the sleaziest, most immoral people on the internet - and that's saying something.
To be fair, from your own about page:

Q: Can I use these ideas for myself?
A: Yes, absolutely. No strings attached.

I don't see what they've done wrong.

Sounds to me like they're giving you the opportunity to make your own iPod app replacement...YAY!!!!

Sega just whore the shit out of Sonic 1, it's sad.

Also the frame rate issues in this port were not present in the ipod classic version of Sonic 1 I'm sure. It's the same damn source code surely.

Any impressions of Sway? CO-OP show made it look pretty fun.

And does the Crystal Defenders full game have enough content to make it worth it? I enjoyed the demo quite a bit.

Sonic on the iphone is just an emulator and rom, seriously, someone swapped out the rom with sonic and knuckles (using jailbroken device) and it plays, but messes up the graphics.

Not worth the value imo, but I would pay that if the emulation was better and they put a little more effort into making it iphone unique, like tilt controls to run aka like Bounce On.

i wish they could have made an Iphone Sonic than a port.
Unleashed is coming to the idevice but we don't know if it's a port, new, 2d or 3d yet.

ipod and mobile sonic 1 versions are real ports (to java code), this is just an emulator and rom package.

Sway is pretty fun, but didn't hold my attention for more than an hour. Every so often I'll fire it up, but there's something about the game I find stressful (constantly having to have a thumb or two pressed against the screen) that keeps me from flat out enjoying it.

It's sort of like how the grocery store puts out cake samples with a sign saying "Take Me, I'm Free". They don't mean that they want you to walk up, scoop 100s of samples into your pocket, leave without talking to the attendant, and sell the samples across the street at your own business. I mean, yes, technically, "Take Me, I'm Free" entitles you to do that, but I think everyone knows that there's an implied second rule that says "P.S. Please Don't Be A Dickhead!"

But, really, the companies involved know this--otherwise, why would they have initiated contact with him and had a back and forth with him?

Just went on a spending spree with my new iphone. You don't really think about it at the time but all those 59p games really start to add up :( The app store is going to kill me, As I have no self control when it comes to this stuff

Ah well, I still got some good games. Drop7 is amazing.

Think of an emulator running on a slightly underpowered pc, that's what it is like. touch arcade have a video of the game playing if you want to check how it runs.

Eek.
It's not THAT bad (at least not as bad as Sonic Anniversary), but eh. What have you done with my first video game Sega ? >:(
The sound is far from perfect.
Sonic runs perfectly on PSP Megadrive emulator, so there's no reason to have a port like this on the iPhone.

Perfect port or no buy.

I would like S-E to port most of their 16 bits RPGs to the iPhone.

Hell, portable FF1-6 (mobile phone versions for 1&2, 2D remake for 3 and SNES ports for 4-6), Secret of Mana...

Do it S-E !

Sega seem to use an old emulator base for everything they do, because sonic's rolling and jump sounds are extremely similar to other emulated titles with that high pitch whine sound. To add insult to injury someone who helped them with an emulator long ago has a much better version on the net you can just download, sega need to update their emulation shit.

Turn based stuff makes sense. Secret of Mana, though? I don't know...

I'm five stages into Vanguard Storm and I have to say, this game is excellent. Big fan.

How is the character / enemy / level variety in Vanguard Storm?

I really enjoyed the demo for that and Crystal Defenders, im' trying to decide which I would get more out of, long-term.

There has been at least one new enemy introduced each stage so far, a few of which really change the way you need to think about the level. More importantly is the attributes and attack abilities of your units. That's really where the variety comes into play, and through 5 stages I have 5 different unit types (I think). Adding some strategy to it, you have to pick which unit to add to the battle, and you only get to do so once, adding another layer of strategy.

I doubt it gets a ton deeper than it is now, but for $5 I have no complaints.

You would probably get more long term value out of any of the big 4 four when it comes to tower defense games which means: 7 cities, The creeps, Fieldrunners. or GeoDefense.

I like Vanguard Storm quite a bit but it's not a traditional defense game and it's not especially deep but it is fun and the enjoyment comes out of how quickly you have to make your choices.

I've been playing Abigail and I really enjoy it. It seems like a really standard shooter at first, but the ball n' chain mechanic is pretty cool when you understand it.

Basically, your ball can absorb bullets, and when it gets to max, you can unleash it in a swinging motion that, when it hits enemies, causes enemies to drop 10 times more crystal shards than normal. Levels end when you collect a certain amount of crystal shards.

I really like it, and it's a good looking game too.

If you like crystal Defenders, I'd suggest the WiiWare versions, they are the best and have the most content.

On the iPhone, Vanguard Storm is a better bet, IMO. I'm about halfway through it and have enjoyed it thoroughly. It's pretty tough though.

Gemmed! is a puzzle match 3 that puts more of the emphasis on the puzzle part. You have to match to clear a path to let monsters escape from the board. The game has been out since early in the year but is a good example of a dev updating their game to make it worthy and take it from average to good as it is now up to version 1.6. Good game imo with a nice price.
