Damn. Thanks so much for the awesome responses and recommendations, there's so many games that you don't know where to start and generic internet lists aren't to reliable.

So excited! I'll let you guys know what I think next week when my day off downloading apps and games.

I would recommend:

Flight Control ($1, land all the planes, addicting and well done)
Real Racing ($10, similar to GT but with much less content and no customization)
Isotope ($3, similar to Geometry Wars but better)
Siberian Strike ($1, a shooter similar to 1942)
Cube Runner (FREE, tilt to fly and dodge the blocks)
Tap Defense (FREE, tower defense game)
Topple (FREE, balance a stack of objects)
Tap Tap Revenge 2 (FREE, music rhythm game similar to Guitar Hero)
Baseball 09 ($3, Baseball game with career mode)
21 Pro Sponsored (FREE, blackjack game teaches you basic strategy)

There's other stuff worth getting, but you absolutely cannot go wrong with anything on this list.

Any impressions on The Sims 3 for iPhone? Is it a complete game? How is the performance and do the controls work well?

Well my non-gamer GF loves it... but in the 5 minutes I played on her phone I thought the controls were very sluggish.

Blimp is out, $0.99. I wanna get it but it's >10mb and I'm at work. Anybody have any impressions?

went and preordered 3gs today, have probably $50 of games i want to buy day 1.

so, when are the rebel assault games going to be ported over? :D

I just tried Blimp - it's a very nicely made Lunar Lander type of game. Gravity pulls your Blimp down, you have to keep it in the air and do various tasks, which include transporting passengers around, and fighting various enemies. It looks really nice, not only the gameplay graphics, but the menu graphics too are really nice and detailed, in style that reminds me a bit of Cinemaware games on Amiga (which is a great thing).

Lot of Star Defense haters over on TA, but I'm convinced 90% of them don't know wtf a good game is to begin with.

I, however, know a good game when I play one and Star Defense is absolutely fantastic. The 3D spherical maps are a pretty cool twist on a oversaturated genre. It kind of has a Defense Grid vibe, if any of you grabbed it when it was on sale on Steam.

There are different styles of TD games, and I'm just not a fan of this style. It seems like it would be VERY appealing to a lot of people, but I just couldn't get into it.

What do you not like about it? The fixed path design or the spherical map?

Looks like the new Iphone 3G S is going to use new PowerVR GPU. I'm not all that familiar with the differences between their models, but if Lazy8 still lurks around, I hope he'll fill us in.

http://www.appleinsider.com/article...e_powervr_sgx_gpu_core_for_opengl_es_2_0.html

The big difference is hardware support for OpenGL ES 2.0. That allows for custom, programmable pixel and vertex shaders; basically, where the old graphics chip always rendered stuff the same way, with this new chip developers can write little programs that are run on the graphics chip that tell it how to render stuff. This makes some really nice 3D effects easy to do, some that just aren't possible without shaders. Think of the difference between Gamecube and Xbox graphics - where Gamecube had to build cell shading into the hardware, Xbox programmers could program their own cell shading, and it would be just as fast. Many Xbox games used pixel shaders for lighting and texture effects that made things look far more real than they could have without them.

The Lady Gaga version of Tap Tap Revenge was released at $5. It rocks, as you might expect.

It's also got boss tracks that have you turn the iPhone horizontally and play with four rails instead of three.

I'm really loving the music in Parachute Panic. Really clever :lol

Also loving Taxi Ball and Star Ride by fellow NeoGAFfers. Very nice work. All the best.

I'm limiting trying to limit myself to 2 paid games per day until I end up converting all my Lite versions to full versions and checking out all the games I want to. It'll be at least a month until I catch up!

I bought Star Defense yesterday as my first tower defence game. I've been keen to try out the genre for a while and I've bought a few ngmoco games, and this definitely has the expected level of polish.

It's really tough, though. Got through the first planet without too much trouble, but how I'm stuck on the second. I'm getting better each time and can now reach wave 40 before being overwhelmed, but it seems to get really hard really quickly, and it's a bit random how far I actually make it. Are there tactics that I should know that I'm maybe trying to do the hard way? Normal difficulty BTW - I'm too proud to drop down to easy :p

o: sold

I couldn't tell what it was from the screenshots. I just knew it looks good. Will buy.

Is Parachute Panic fun?
yes, though I find it gets hard too fast...anyway at .99 it's nice

Blimp looks cool, I'll definitely check it out.
Nice little game but a button for going up makes this harder to control than necessary...probaly get used to it and sure is meant to be part of the challenge......anyway, for .99 it's great

Download a free app called PandoraBox. It allows you to keep tabs on the app store. You can choose between viewing new apps, or new price changes. Within there, you can choose between free or paid apps. Within there, you can choose to toggle any category.

So every morning I've been getting up, checking "new price changes -> games only", and checking both the free and paid sections to make sure I'm not missing out on any sales or giveaways!

I would but I'm without my touch until my mac comes. :p

Total space taxi, plus exploring to find hidden items some req'd, some bonus. Also, bombing runs.

This game is GREAT! Good for pick up & play, totally worth $0.99. Get it before it goes to $2.99 as expected.

Questions about Zenonia:

1) Is it easy to play for just a few minutes, having it standby inbetween sessions? Does it take too long to load for this to be practical?
2) Is it worth playing, or significantly worse, without sound? Wondering if I can play the game while listening to podcasts, or if the game even supports that in the first place.

I know some games that disable the iPod functionality can be worked around by:

-Start iPod playback
-Load game, iPod playback stops
-Lock device
-Double-tap home to load iPod controls, start iPod playback again
-Unlock device - you're in the game listening to the iPod just fine

How will iPhone game compatibility be indicated on the App Store? The iPhone 2G/3G and iPod Touch 1G are 400MHz, the iPod Touch 2G is 512MHz, the iPhone 3GS is 600MHz and has a new GPU and OpenGL ES 2.0, and who knows what the iPod Touch 3G will have in a few months.

Either games won't be made to take advantage of the new hardware, or they have to make it very clear that it won't work on the old hardware. The App Store listings should be filtered by the device you are browsing with, and browsing through iTunes will have device compatibility listed. Any idea if they are going to implement this?

Why surprising? I thought all the EA titles were known to be pretty good.

Well, in general the "big" publishers have done a sloppy job on the iPhone, EA's casual stuff outside the iPhone tends to be pretty bad (ranging from the truly abominable Monopoly current-gen to the almost-passable Trivial Pursuit).

Also, Clue(do) iPhone is not actually related to the board game Clue. It's kinda a new and different formula.

Yes to both. You can save anytime and it's broken up into short mmo-ish quests, so you can just knock one or two out, save, and come back later. It also loads very quickly.

Ya, it's good that EA is making quality iPhone games. I still want to know more about The Sims 3 iPhone, but nobody has any info. I am hoping for a review or gameplay videos.

ngmoco has stated that they are just going to have their games' graphics scalable. I assume most other developers will as well, instead of limiting their market (since so many people own current gen iphones).

I've heard there are already games that run smoother on the iPod Touch 2G than the iPhone 3G, so graphics scaling wasn't being done when there were 2 tiers of CPU. Now that there are 3, potentially even 4 tiers, and surely more to come every year, scaling would indeed be interesting. However, eventually they'd have to drop backwards compatibility, and they have to plan a way to properly stop owners of the old devices from buying stuff that won't work.

Desktop Tower Defense (the flash-based game which first got me hooked) is coming to iPhone this summer!

exciting b/c it's still one of my favorites + it has a ton of bonus modes for lots of replayability.

Yay! I think I'll buy this then.

Is the iPod support handled in-game, or do I need to use that trick to start the iPod?

And by "yes" to the second question, did you mean it's significantly worse without sound? Or is it perfectly fine to play without missing anything while listening to something on the iPod?

Yeah, I was just reading an article on Anadtech. The difference is not only in programmable shaders, but in raw speed as well. The new GPU should have 7x more polys/sec and 3.5x more fillrate than the old one.

Has anyone played DinoSmash Online? From the pics and description it's like Small Arms (XBLA) + more dinosaurs, which in my book is an epic win.

Is there any filtering for games or apps that specifically utilize an iphone feature that isn't available on the itouch? Any specific indication on the product page?

It is going to be tough waiting out a year with brand new apps that I can't use but I'm not going to give in and just wait for next year's model.

The spherical design. I like both fixed path and open TD, but I like to be able to see the whole field. It's just frustrating to me.

I doubt that many 3gs only games will be released that soon. Doing so cuts out many millions of potential customers.

I find it to be a huge clusterfuck online... not really worth even the $1 imo. It lags, the control kinda sucks and movement is so fast that aiming is near impossible. I really just run back and forth and mash attack and eventually die.

I think most people play like I do, but there is always one guy on each server that knows how to play and has over twice the amount of kills as anyone else. I bet THAT guy on each server is having fun.
