Damn, if Mass Effect has slowdown on a 3GS then I can't wait to see how it runs on a regular iPhone. What the hell were they thinking?

I sort of tried to tamper down expectations on that Mass Effect game in the past but I guess people were still sorta expecting something really worthy. It was sorta obvious to me when it was announced that it was mostly a cash in job/test app rather than a true original game sort of worthy of the Mass Effect Brand.

It probably doesn't utilize anything from the 3GS, since those specs weren't made available until after Mass Effect iPhone was basically finished.

As for being shocked that Bioware released a game with a chugging framerate... :lol

It's just that Mass Effect is so great and the iPhone is capable of having a game experience that is so great. I wasn't expecting the 360 version on iPhone but the gameplay here is really nothing to write home about. I'll still play it but if I had to make room on my iPhone it would be one of the first to go.

Oh well. I have plenty of other games to play and to wait for. No big deal.

What's with all this half-assin'? WHERE'S YOUR COMMITMENT?!

Sorry I just found it (sort of) amusing. d:

I didn't expect anything special from ME but I had hope. I'll... likely buy it anyway. I am unashamedly a Mass Effect fanboy. :D

Well of course I agree but it takes a real dedicated and committed effort to build an original game and their tone always struck me as if they were simply testing the waters. The total dev time was probably fairly short on it.

That doesn't matter - the 3GS has a much faster CPU and GPU. You would have to design your game to specifically limit the framerate to not have it be affected by that upgrade. So if a game is getting actual slowdown on the 3GS, where sometimes it's running at full speed and others it runs slower, that's shows a real problem, potentially HUGE slowdown on a 3G or original iPhone or iPod.

This is truth. Bioware is known for making awesome games...and very buggy games with many technical issues. I was actually surprised at how little the original Mass Effect crashed.

May as well ask here but does anyone have any experience with the various guitar apps? GuitarToolkit Lite seems like a good product but I'm curious if anyone has experience with anything else.

It seems like Mass Effect wasn't supposed to come out yet haha. There are no reviews even. Also it's 127mbs? What the fuck I thought it was only like 2 hours long.

There's also a trailer for Mass Effect 2 on it.

Don't know if it's been touched on in this thread, but does anybody have suggestions on good asynchronous multiplayer games? Looking for things maybe boardgame or card game based, but anything will do. The only examples I can come up with are Scrabble and Chess with Friends.

I know I'm way late to this, but Eliss is effing amazing. It didn't sound like anything special to me and not like anything I would enjoy, but damn was I wrong. Phenomenal game.

Basically just a general listing broken down into some categories with links to them on the app store. The initial listing is relatively unimportant as I won't pretend to try to hit every good or excellent game on the app store which is impossible of course anyway. The important bit is that I will update the initial post (adding or removing things perhaps) on a weekly basis (or some timeframe) based on what comes out and what the feedback in the thread is as people talk about games and consensus emerges on good games. The problem was we've had threads like this before but they get out of date rather quickly because the first few posts aren't updated so someone makes another thread a few months later and the process is repeated again which is what I'm trying to eliminate.

And we need a thread to essentially remove the on going cycle as new people buy the idevices and ask what they should buy that can dominate this thread.
Thats a great idea

Edit: will you update based on discussion here or will all noted recommendations have to be made in that thread?

Dang, so Mass Effect's not very good? Too bad, I was hoping for a cool sci-fi RPG.

Does anyone know about a Command & Conquer being made for iPhone? Did I imagine that or is EA working on it? Seems like RTS could be a big genre on the platform.

If I'm not mistaken, a Red Alert game was announced at E3. I don't really remember any other details though.

Game: The Creeps!
Level: A sticky situation
Challenge: All badges

thecreeps1b.jpg

I've tried this level so many times.
My target is to beat it with all achievement badges (so I need no monsters touch baby's bed), but I really cannot find a tactic to avoid them.

Are you? Any help?
Thanks!

I worked in this game, and it's first time we use simple physics. It's a pretty fun physics based puzzle. Please guys give me feedback.

Just finished playing the free version. Pretty fun game, nice polish, physics feel pretty good. I like the variety with how the blocks reacted; some shrank, some exploded, etc., added a nice layer of strategy. Based on the demo, I could definitely see myself buying it for $3. I think this is the first Digital Chocolate game I will buy.

Thanks! About the polishment, there are a couple or so little things that we couldn't polish / fix due to time constraints. But in overall we're proud of the game.

BTW, does the full version cost $3? Here it just cost 2.39€

Back the truck up dude, Tower Bloxx Deluxe 3d is awesome and if you haven't bought it, you really should!

BTW Tower Bloxx for iPhone version received a recent update (Tower Bloxx Live) with Facebook support, where you can see in-game the best score and the avatar of your Facebook friends.

I just finished my first game of Archon.

The presentation is awesome. Great sound effects and graphics. However the controls are pretty bad. I know there aren't many 'dpad on screen' games with what you'd call good controls. But I've played quite a few that do it a lot better than this game. It's really hard to get your shots firing in the right direction. Especially diagonal.

The AI likes to bumrush you as well, which is different to the original. But then, I only played on the default difficulty, and they could be different with the other 2 skill settings available. Strangely though, the default was 'easy' I think. But with them bumrushing you it actually makes it much harder to kill them. Melee was always hard in Archon. Close combat ranged firing with bad controls is even harder.

But with all that said. It is a fantastic port. Certainly worth the cash and I look forward to mastering this version like I did the original. I won't be happy until I can wipe out the entire dark side with a single unicorn. And with the stats tracking in the game, I can actually go for a things like fastest times and least pieces lost.

Probably already mentioned but Sallys Spa is on sale for 99 cents. Bought it for the GF but spent the last hour addicted to it. :lol Totally unexpected.

I'm assuming this is like a Supermarket Mania / Hospital Havoc time management sim?

Yea it's one of those management sims. My first time trying one. And it's apparently the number 1 paid app right now. :O

Watching the video, I couldn't help but think it looks like Boom Blox in 2D. Is this a fair interpretation?

Mass Effect' framerate is horrible on a 2g iphone. When you fire a missle the game freezes for half a sec :lol

I'm sorry, I never played Boom Blox so I don't know if they work in the same way. I'm just a programmer, so I don't know if they had this game as reference (I never saw it mentioned anywhere).

In Jungle Bloxx you should break the rocks strategicly to place the round gem in the altar. If it falls in the altar you win. If it falls in the floor you loose.

In every level you can be awarded with gold, silver or bronze medal depending the number of pieces you destroyed to clear the level (less rocks = better performance).

There are severall special types of rocks. They react in different way when you explode them: fire rock burns the colliding ones, the ice rock breaks when collides with another moving rock, the thunder rocks are linked in groups so when you break one you break all the rocks of the group, etc.

There are items, too. To stop the time, to make the gem bigger, etc.

And there are match 3 minigames.

Whoa? That sucks.

Yeah. It's not constant on a 3GS but there are times where the game comes to a major, major crawl. I don't even understand why, the AI isn't that smart, they'll be 3 enemies, and they're all small 2D sprites.

I'm going to play through it because I bought it at $6 or whatever it was, unlike 99 cent games that I'll just toss aside. But I'm not going to love it.

Anyone see this:

Kolonists

http://www.getifun.com/kolonists/index01.html

Kolonists is a game of strategy, construction and politics in the ancient Roman Empire for 3 to 4 players.

You will be able to build, gather resources, trade and even use your Clan’s senatorial connections to turn the local barbarian tribes against your opponents!

Get the influence you need in order to become Governor of Kayxo, and earn Glory for Ages!
It's a Catan ripoff without the dice. Sounds interesting for two bucks.

Just did my daily Pandora Box favorites check, and it looks like Castle of Magic has been put on sale. No mention of how long the sale is in the iTunes description, but for now it's $4.99 instead of the regular $5.99.

Also --- WTF is with Super Monkey Ball still being $7?! :P

Is Mass Effect fully voiced or something? It has a pretty big download size.

There is voiceover but not for every convo, just in cutscenes from what I saw. There's still text talk.

Apparently the size is because it has a ME2 trailer embedded.
