gonna play da shit out of this

Wow... I'm sorry to say, but that looks very ugly compared to the GC/PS2/Wii version... I know it's mobile, but sometimes, it seems some games are better left in the past where we can relish its beauty.

Resurrecting it like that without polishing it just makes it look like an undead. :(

While I'm personally not overly a fan of extensive 3-D on systems like the early model iphones or the DS, it seems a bit silly to complain about this. Games existed in 3-D before current gen systems. Everything will eventually look like shit when you press far enough ahead in technology.

ChinaTown wars is an ugly game on the DS. That doen't mean its not a good game.

When I'm not working, I've been spending almost all of my time playing ArmA 2 on PC.

When I'm not doing that, I'm getting back into iPhone gaming on my 3GS. Been hooked on Tyrian and got back into HotField (both awesome shmups), and been playing lots of I Dig It and Powerpros. The de facto go-to action game for me remains circuit.strike.one.

I also have a huge backlog of games on my phone that I still need to play: Zenonia, Worms, Isotope, Knights Onrush, Peggle, and the list goes on and on.

The list updates constantly throughout the day. It is highly doubtful they are manipulating it in the way you are suggesting. Apple uses a rolling average on the sales. While I don't agree with the system they have mostly because it's not using revenue and instead using total unit sales there is nothing to suggest they are gaming the list.

And Warpack Grunts has 311 reviews. The latest update version has 17 reviews. They do this for every game when it receives an update. You're seeing shadows in the dark.

I didn't realize they used rolling averages or restarted ratings when a game got updated. Makes more sense. Plus, I usually only look at the info via the iPhone interface; maybe that updates slower.

*slowly removes tinfoil hat*

Anybody playing Battle of Pirate Bay? I'm pretty bad at it, can't get higher than 177 kills.

Please tell you bought Edge before it was taken down.

That's the only thing I see missing in that list.

At the moment, my top 3.

EDGE
Isotope
Peggle

Here's my impressions on the games I've downloaded so far:

• Tic Tac Toe Free: It's Tic Tac Toe, what do you expect?
• Paper Toss: A decent time-waster.
• Labyrinth 3D: Reminds me why I hate the real-life version of those things. Also, what's with the background music?
• Unblock Me Free: Wish I could move other blocks besides the ones I'm supposed to...
• Chase The Dot: OK for a few seconds.
• Pop Lite: Relaxing. How does it compare to the WiiWare version?
• Bloons Lite: kinda tricky.
• de Blob Lite: It's weird, because it shares a lot of the same elements with the Wii game, except it's 2D. The lower power of the iPod Touch means the game loses a lot of the style that the Wii version had. Still, it makes me wish the Wii version had had an option for tilt-controls.
• Spore Origins Lite: OK; the graphics are good. I couldn't quite tell how the customization affected the gameplay...
• Rolando Lite: Pretty cool and stylish. Uses the iPod Touch features well.
• Toki Tori Lite: Puzzling. Made me think. I liked how each time I had to restart, I had learned something to do better the next time. How does it compare to the WiiWare version?
• Metal Gear Solid Touch Lite: Didn't really do much for me since I'm not that familiar with the Metal Gear Solid universe.
• Chess Free: On easy, the AI lost to Blitzkrieg. Wow.
• Dots Free: The AI is pretty stupid on easy here, too. I drew lines in the wrong places a few times.
• Checkers Free: OK. I don't play checkers that much, so I can't really comment on the AI.
• Sudoku Free: Took me a bit to figure out the interface, but I once I got it, Easy was easy.
• Pac-Man Lite: None of the control options really fit this game that well. They should have made a new Pac-Man from the ground up that's actually built around the iPod Touch's control scheme rather than porting the original.
• Solitaire Free: Why no dragging and dropping of cards?
• Blackjack Free: I don't really play Blackjack much, so I didn't get into it.
• Hangman: OK version of hangman. I like that it gives you a dictionary definition after. I clicked the wrong letter a few times.
• iBowl: The controls feel kind of different from Wii Sports. It's hard to adapt to.
• Target Practice: 10-second time waster.
• Free Minesweeper: It works better than I expected.
• Topple: I preferred the Flash version. Rotating pieces is kind of tricky.
• Assassin's Creed: Altair's Chronicles Lite: I could kind of tell it used to be a DS game in some parts. All the geometry being at right angles made me wish for a d-pad instead of a simulated analog stick so I wouldn't slip off as easily. The graphics look better than what can be done on the DS, though. Overall, which one is better?
• Castle Magic Lite: Cute and happy. I like Gameloft's engine. The platforming is good, too.
• Hero of Sparta Lite: OK. On one hand, the combat seems to be a little shallower than in Assasin's Creed, but on the other hand, the QTEs feel like a better use of the touch screen. I like the setting better than in Assassin's Creed, too.
• Zenonia Lite: The interface sucks. What's with all the scroll bars and buttons that don't work when touched? You're already using the touchscreen to simulate the d-pad and buttons, why can't I touch the part of the screen that makes sense instead? Either actually use the touchscreen, or put your game on a platform that has a d-pad and buttons. This is how I feel about games that use the touchscreen to simulate a d-pad/analog stick and buttons in general, but Zenonia is the worst offender I've come across so far. The actual RPG parts are okay though.
• Wolfenstein 3D Lite: I never played the original, so I'm wondering, did the graphics get an upgrade? They look cleaner than what I would expect for the era. In general, the game seemed to feel more like a 3D maze with the occasional enemy rather than an actual FPS. Granted, I was playing on easy, but still. I wish the DS would get a version so that the map could be displayed at the same time as the gameplay so I wouldn't have to be stopping to check it all the time.
• Heavy Mach Lite: Kinda fun. Took me a bit to figure out how to jump. I wish it had background music to break the monotony of the gunfire though.
• Brick Breaker 3D Free: The controls are hard to choose between. If I use the buttons on the side, it's not as precise, but if I touch the paddle directly, I can't see it. That's something I kind of dislike about the iPod Touch in general: having to touch with a finger instead of a stylus means a lot of the screen is often covered up, making it harder to see and less precise.
• Galaxy on Fire Lite: Kind of reminds me of EV Nova, except more linear and with 3D combat. I switched to accelerometer controls. I'm amazed by the 100-point difficulty slider. I turned it down a little (to 39).
• Isotope Lite: The accelerometer controls worked well the first time I played it, but since the latest update, they don't seem to work for me anymore.
• iFighter Lite: Hard.
• Nano Fighter Lite: Why doesn't the background move when I move? I think I kind of prefer Isotope.
• Dropship Lite: Is there a way to invert the flight controls? Also, what am I supposed to do with the thing in the first level once I pick it up?
• Zenbound Lite: Relaxing and interesting.
• Zentomino Lite: It felt kind of weird playing this after my brother had just been playing with real life Tangrams.
• Totomi Lite: I never went back to this after the tutorial.
• Archibald's Adventures Lite: Fun and puzzling.
• Tiki Towers Lite: I hadn't expected the building and the letting the monkeys loose to be separate. How does this compare to the WiiWare version?
• Eliss Lite: I didn't get this at all the first time I played it, but after coming back to it, it's kind of cool.
• Sway Lite: Pretty hard. It took me so long to beat the first level.
• Dizzy Bee Free: OMG 360º screen rotation! I love it!
• Defend Your Castle Lite: Easier than what I played of the multiplayer mode in the WiiWare version at a friend's house.

So that's what I've played so far. Also downloaded some non-game apps, which are also cool. Haven't paid any money for anything yet, which is nice. Should I pay the $9.95 for the update to system 3.0? In general for games, I prefer the accelerometer to the touchscreen. I haven't seen any games yet that use the touchscreen as well as Zelda: Phantom Hourglass uses the DS's touchscreen. Still, the iPod Touch in general makes me wonder why Nintendo didn't put an accelerometer or a GPS in the DSi or make its touchscreen multi-touch. I hope these features will make it into the next DS.

How far along in Edge are you? I think I've hit a road block :/

Level 11. I'm playing like 1 or 2 levels every other day. When I finish a level I replay it like 4 or 5 times to see how close I can get to an S Rank.

Oh. Still pretty early in.

I'll edit to include a link later but I'm on my iPhone right now. There's this cool game called A Doodle Flight. It has the hand drawn on paper graphics we've been seeing a lot of but it's a shooter. You control aiming with the accelerometer, the ship goes by itself. It makes for a really fun experience so I just thought I'd recommend the lite version to anyone who seem interested. I have the lite for now but will probably buy it, it feels fresh.

I'm going to complete the lite version before deciding but it feels like a buy.

any apps to make custom ringtones from my itunes library? (not purchased from itunes)
:lol

Jigglypuff themed ring tunes?

I doubt Apple would allow for the creation of custom ringtunes through an app. There are ways to go about it though. I just can't quite remember the process now. Do a google search.

Good games to get:

Flight Control
Real Football 2009
Fast And Furious
Ice Age 3D Skating (Full Version free so not too bad)
Paper Toss
Spin The Ball
Sk8 Half Pipe Lite
Blowfish
Terminator Salvation
MGS
Resistance
Assasins Creed

Will update later.

Does anyone remember the games on the older ipods where you would be given a list of songs on your ipod where one would be playing and you have to match it with a song on the list? Are there any similar iphone games, that match or even build upon that?

Music iQ which was free a few weeks ago. Now it's 99 cents.

Is it only me or do others feel like onscreen pads/buttons are the way of the past and should not be supported (by your wallet)?

I got Hero of Sparta pretty early and found it to be a nice game. But since then I played so many games with better, more intutitive and/or more inventive controls I just think using an onscreen dpad is lazyness on the developer's side.

I tried Zenonia, Castle of magic and RE Degenaration and while all are good games in their own right I dont feel like buying them even if there are no close alternatives for those...I rather spend my money on games more suited to the platform, which are often even much cheaper.

What do you think? Are there any games where you feel the need for an onscreen dpad?

IMO RPGs would be nice with "go very you touch" and and combat in the veign of SW:FU with e.g. swipe combos which could be pretty intuitive as well as complex.

Doom shows the way for 3D shooters. I know some of you hate rail shooters but I would rather have a port of Umbrella chronicles on my iphone than that RE4 game, that - while not looking bad - could neither capture the graphics nor the controls of the GC/Wii version.

Castle of Magic...ok, I dont even have the perfect solution for that ready, but actually I dont find it at all appealing the way it plays.

Situation with the game EDGE is that it was removed again from the US store and some other stores (I still see it in the Canadian store, but I guess it's just a matter of when it disappears at this point)

Author is trying to increase the awareness of the game by asking people to download the free demo version, and leave a review for it explaining why you can't download the real thing:

If you want to support us you can download EDGE LITE on the App store http://tinyurl.com/edgelite
if Edge Lite does it in the charts it will be easier for us to obtain more help
http://forums.toucharcade.com/showthread.php?t=19234

I did it, and will leave a review for both full and lite version.

I agree pretty much 100%. None of my favorite games uses virtual dpad, and I also agree that Doom Resurrection was executed just the way it should have been. It actually felt good playing it, and the game was much more fun than any 3D shooter with virtual dpad I tried.

Of course, I'll be willing to make an exception if/when C64 emulator comes out :P

Naturally...

But then...I didnt even care to jailbreak after 3.0. SNES emulation was nice but more of a gimmick as the games just werent made for a touchscreen...still I would love to see the C64 emu being released, a little bit of nostalgia cant hurt.

Power Pros is very good. I wish it had more options/features (only two stadiums, six teams, no My Life mode), but it plays a very good game of baseball.

I also picked up Zenonia this weekend for $2.99. It's a solid game with great visuals. It's too bad more developers don't go the 2D route with iPhone/iPod Touch games.

There are apps that can create ringtones on the fly. You have to jailbreak though.

Nah, I don't think it's that bad, as long as the developers implement it the way it should. As for the shooters I have tried so far (Doom, Terminator, Cube, Resident Evil is sort of a shooter), I think Gameloft's Terminator Salvation is the best way to control a fps/tps on the iPhone. A fairly good virtual nub, combined with good camera controls and a bit of auto-aim.

Resident Evil controls pretty good too so far, but it's slower-paced and its hit detection sucks.

Cube just sucks, but it is free

Quite unrelated, but I would love seeing Gameloft copying SOCOM :D (8 players online, voice chat, Terminator-like controls). It could easily be a hit as it would be the first shooter with a real competetive online part.
make it happen Gameloft, seriously

I grabbed Taxiball. I had no excuse to skip it at this price.

Any other interesting price drops? I already have Isotope (which you all should buy).

Defender Chronicles just got lowered to 99 cents and I find it an awesome deal. I think I like it better than Geodefense.

No kidding. Most entertainment I have ever got out of 99 cents. It feels so good to beat a guy ranked in the top thousand when you're still only a rookie. :lol

Just got Taxiball, thx for the heads up people.

Wish I had got Zenonia at discount though, I don't play it enough to justify full price.

Hold on to your hair, the game is awesome :D Take note that the music is now SHIT compared to pre-update music, they must have lost the rights to the tunes they were using and quickly threw together a few monkies in a barn with a keyboard to make replacements.

Definately a matter of taste. Just tried the lite version and can say that I hate the controls.

So none of my apps work any more. When I click on one, it will open, and then close right away. It used to be just a few, but now they all don't work. I tried syncing again, but that didn't work. Any idea what might be wrong?

Zombies vs. Sheep just appeared on the US iTunes store. Really neat little shooter. $0.99 is the price right now, says it's an intro rate but not for how long. I'll try and post some impressions after I play some more. http://tinyurl.com/m6sdc8 here is the iTunes link. I'm posting from my iPhone so I put some screenshots on my twitter: Twitter.com/bobnmullen

Zombies vs Sheep is a fun shooting gallery game. Tap to shoot and tilt to move a sheep to collect coins dropped by shot zombies. The art is really neat well animated cardboard cutouts of skeletons and bats and such. There is a kind of Day of The Dead feel to the art style. The controls feel nice and you get some nice visual feedback when you hit a target spot on. For example, headshots on the zombies are much more effective then just quickly shooting wherever. There is also a nice little upgrade system and openfeint integration is included. The openfeint includes online leaderboards, ahcievements, and a chatroom for players. Overall a well polished package. Oh, and did I mention shooting those zombies is fun? The game takes me back to a simpler time in my life where going down to the boardwalk shooting gallery with a pocket full of quarters was my idea of a real rad day. I would say at $0.99 this is an easy purchase, espesially fir fans of shooting galleries.
