I know all of this man. :lol Just saying that for me its not at the level of replacing a handheld for me. Its just lacking on alot of genres. I dont think it will ever replace a handheld either, for me my favorite stuff on the handheld is smaller type stuff. Like Eliss.

They all have their place really.

I'm someone who gets all the platforms because I don't want to be *that* guy who goes "Why is that game not coming out on my platform of choice!" in game threads.

I'm usually more annoyed at regioning since I don't like getting *two* of the same console.

Which reminds me...

...when the heck is Konami's Power Pros available in Europe?

It almost solely depends on what and where your gaming tastes lie. There is no reason for an iphone to be considered a "replacement" for the DS or PSP in terms of marketplace. As far as individual tastes I can certainly tell you it has replaced my PSP which I was never much interested in and it certainly rivals my DS in the sense of I barely play my DS anymore and wouldn't outside of certain genres. People like to make the argument that the iphone is lacking in certain genres as compared to the DS and that is an appropriate argument to make but I can quickly name about 20 to 40 games that I love on my iphone that simply aren't available on the DS either and to boot they are much much much cheaper. I have nothing against any of the handhelds. They all have a legit share of the market but I can tell you for ME the iphone is quickly passing those other handhelds as the handheld device I prefer to play. That doesn't speak to anybody else and what they want to play.
 
What I do like about the iPhone is the superlow threshold for releasing something.

Sure there's a lot of crap, but also a lot of small gems which would have had a hard time convincing a publisher for release on DS/PSP/XBLA/PSN/WiiWare.

DropSum is quite good and reminds me of Drop7 obviously in layout and even in some of the chain reactionary theory.

DownToZero is a completely different kind of game compared to those two in that it's really more of a speed quick reaction time game.

Speaking of that we should have a separate iphone game of the year vote for this thread. I just have to remember to set it up at the end of the year.
 
I guess my tastes are changing. I have a stack of DS games sitting here, some unopened, and I just can't find the time. Pulling the trigger on a $30 DS game has become really difficult when I'm this satisfied with games that are less than $10.

I still want the PSP GO for the odd game, but it's becoming more difficult in my mind to justify for the same reasons.

This but it's pretty much across the board for me. I just have little interest in buying full price games anymore whether its on a handheld or a console. Don't get me wrong I do. I will buy a good number of games this fall and I'm excited about it. But in general my buying habits have dropped off the map because I just don't really feel like spending full price on something there is a good chance I'm not going to feel is worth the value. That's why things like PSN/XBLA/iPhone interest me a lot more or GameFly.

The market for sub retail priced games is pretty much where I'm at most of the year.

The only $60 games I can justify are the big Western RPGS, since I'll play them for 40-80 hours over the course of several months.

I'll buy Dragon Age, and that might be it for me this fall. Mass Effect 2 whenever that hits. Otherwise, it's XBLA/iPhone.

I tend to buy the big shooters games because the multiplayer derives so many hours of play from me but I mostly agree. Unless it's a mammoth single player or a multiplayer game, I'll just gamefly it.
 
It's an interesting situation for me.

Last December when I was going to US for a job, I left all my consoles behind. I was even thinking of leaving my DS, but as a going away gift, a friend got me TWEWY, Advance Wars Days of Ruin, and Prof. Layton, just because these were games he always recommended, but I had left gaming fall a lot by the wayside in the time leading up to my leaving.

Obviously I had my iPhone. So with no consoles, I kind of dropped gaming nearly altogether. I did play through Layton, and kind of forced my self through Advance Wars over the course of 6 months, but the DS never rekindled my gaming desire (although I did stare longingly at all the new console games coming out). I thought the DSi may kick start it again, but until FLipnote, there wasn't much that was appealing.

To me the iPhone was the saviour. For someone becoming increasingly less interested in long titles, the pick up and play mechanic of the majority of iPhone games was fantastic. It's not so much the platform, but what the platform means to developers. Quick 99c games were kinda neat for me to toy around with, even if I didn't seriously play them.

yes, exactly. it reminds me somewhat of the indie PC gaming scene. there's a lot of stuff out there by one and two man teams that's different and fun and unique. barrier to entry is the price of a mac mini and some dedication to the final product

yes, there's problems with the App Store and approval times and communication but, as a games delivery front end, it's pretty awesome.

@BenjaminBirdie. I was also waaaay late on the Drop7 party and I had no excuse since I had an iPhone 3G since launch. but now I'm helplessly addicted to it. can't say I'm all that great but I was relatively proud of my 250,135 score the other day.

when a big chain starts off and all the grey blocks start busting and the chime keeps getting higher and higher. man, I love that. :D

Well what has essentially happened in may opinion is that you have a gaming device that can scale up to the handheld market with something like Real Racing or Civ Rev but you also have something that can go below that into flash gaming territory which was sort of completely missing from the landscape before except obviously on PC's. Some of the best casual games on the iphone are essentially games that would have been created for the flash market before. Flight Control is a great flash game that never was a flash game. There was no real credible device that did that before.

yeah... if it weren't for scribblenauts coming out soon, I'd sell my DS. the iPhone has all the portable gaming goodness I really want nowadays. It's matured so quickly in only one year.

I couldn't be without my DS and PSP, but yeah, the iphone/ipod touch has them beat because it's a truly portable system. I have a 6 hour flight in a few days, and for that I'll use my PSP or DS, but that is a lot different than an everyday situation.
 
iPhone wins cause by default it's with you more often cause it's your phone. That's not the only thing of course (hardware, SDK, app store, etc are all parts of it) but helps a lot. If I just had an iPod touch it probably wouldn't have nearly the same effect on me.

I haven't played the Flash game until now but I got the iPhone one yesterday. Main differences are that the iPhone one has a swipe to start mechanic and the markers have numbers on them instead of concentric rings indicating the number of hits needed. Touch control makes it much easier, but it's still pretty fun. It's pretty polished, more or less the same as the Flash version, but it takes a while to load on my 3G. My only complaint really is that it needs more high score stuff. Right now it only has one high score, even just a local leaderboard so I can see my other highs would be nice, obviously an online one (which the Flash one has iirc) would be the best. I have no problem with it at 99 cents.
 
I'm in the group which thinks the gameboy/ds family are super valuable as a library, some of my fave games ever and a selection of games I couldn't possibly do without.

I love my iphone but am not compelled in any way to think it has even the potential to replace the above. the interface just isn't there, and I have no desire to play those kind of games on the device.

I think I now know how threatened hardcore gamers were when the wii came along :lol I hope the iphone doesn't damage traditional portable gaming.
 
I just bought Twisty Text, a kind of anagram making word game. This after playing Dungeon Scroll, which I find addictive as hell.

It sold me because of the nice presentation, link to a dictionary (online) so you can actually learn words as you go.

It's basically Text Twist (flash game), but well done.

Features:
Move tiles around to spell words, but underline them using a swipe to submit. It actually works pretty well.
Has facebook connect, plus selection of timer, freetime, 5-7 letter words.

Since the Wii hasn't damaged "traditional console gaming" I see no reason to jump to this conclusion. There is always ridiculous fear whenever core gamers think they are somehow being damaged. As I always say the market is what the market is. And no amount of cringing about it is going to change anything.

My high is only 24 on gravity mode so far :( Hard game, but I can't stop playing it.
 
I like iPhone gaming because the games I've played have been great so far. If they were bad, I wouldn't care about price or delivery mechanism.

That I always have my phone is a plus...

Orbital is different than I had expected (didn't watch any videos before watching it, imagined you had complete control over aim), but really neat. Definitely a good "pick-up-and-play" game (I'm starting to get tired of that term), but also kind of really hard to put down. My best is 2 on gravity, and 1 on pure! Wicked!

If anything, the pricing and game styles on the iphone are making Sony reconsider what they're doing, at least. And just judging from podcasts, you can definetly hear people think things like "Civ Rev is $5 ($10) on the iphone vs $30 on the DS, wait, what?" I would be shocked if Sony or Nintendo (them or third party devs) outright quit making big games, and if it does, then shit. I'm hoping it means that it just expands and makes handheld gaming even better. The iPhone/iPod Touch is basically the ultimate for games you can pick up and play for a few minutes. But I still would like my big console-lite games that make up the majority of PSP/DS titles. A middle ground is always nice.

Orbital is pretty awesome. Immediately goes on the recommendation list. It's amazing how that Geometry Wars vector graphics aesthetic produces such pure and sharp graphics.

DDR comes with my highest recommendation. I have repeatedly recommended it. Very occasional skipping, but for the most part it plays exactly how you expect it would. You'd think it's pointless to play a dancing game using your fingers, but it just becomes an intense rhythm game that is much better than tap tap, wot, or any of the other 'pretender' rhythm games out there.

Yes, but I never bought any apps for it.

I second that. I bought it when it first came out. Even got the demo before that. It's got a great set of difficulty, songs, unlockable characters. Great great rhythm game.

when professor layton 2 and scriblenauts come out, you guys are gonna change your iphone-only tune :lol

my experience so far...some games shoot above the cellphone game stereotype, but most of the ones i've tried are simply that. i can't take it seriously as a game device right now, i guess. not that there's anything wrong with a good cellphone game.

Thirded, I played the hell out of it, probably my most played game on the phone. The stutters are just something that you have to deal with...although if you have a 2nd gen touch or 3GS they might not suffer from them (I'm on a 3G).

Not that it matters now, but they changed the lyrics on one of the songs in the last update which was weird and threw me off a bit for a while. Wonder why they did that.
 
Thanks for all the input, picking up DDR soon then!

I'm working on beating Spy Bot right now, cute platformer that does just enough to not be bland but isn't amazing or unique. A nice platformer to vary your library but not a must. I do have a lot of fun playing it though, it's charming.

I think if you restore your iphone from your touch backup, the saves will be transferred over.
When I recently got my iphone replaced (it had a bit of dust under the screen) I simply restored from my backup. All the saves were intact, so it should work the same.
