Boring, my ass! It's a first-person roguelike with guns! And Nazis! And zombies!

I guess I don't really like RPGs all that much. I thought there would be something more tactical to it, but each encounter seemed to be mostly just tapping to shoot, then tapping to heal, tapping to shoot.

There wasn't any action, there wasn't any exploration. I think it looks great and has real charm, but the gameplay was not to my tastes.

how great is real racing? those vids make it look like an amazing little sim, is it not very deep past the controls and graphics?

so awesome. It drinks your battery life in huge gulps though. It's easily one of the best racing games I've played recently. Less emphasis on (boring, tedious) simulation and more emphasis on racing.

More plays will be nice, I was hoping for multiplayer but I guess that will be another update, and I hope they fix Matt Cassels jersey number it really annoys me! (on a side note I just moved from jr member to member woo!)

Ok so I've upgraded iMech from just good to a blast to play. There are plenty of people on tonight and I'm addicted right now. I don't want to oversell it, it's not a super deep or developed mech game but it is good online mech deathmatch action worthy of 2.99 in my opinion. It's probably exactly what you'd expect when you hear "iPhone 3d online mech deathmatch" and nothing more, but it's a solid effort.

/goes back to playing iMech

gotta chime in and show some love for Mr. Aahh. brilliant game that gets your adrenaline pumping! thanks for the rec 60gb.

spent even more time with it and holy shit it gets deep! it's got that old school platforming vibe down pat but with a physics based mechanic. when the difficulty ramps up it reminds me of the later stages of super mario bros. where you'd have to jump and land on the most skinny, spread out platforms. the chain combos are sooo rewarding too.

currently ranked 11th worldwide but that will get demolished as this game picks up steam.

where the fuck is word ace??!!?!

At Apple, of course. :)

We got rejected once, and addressed their concerns. Hopefully, it'll be out soon, but when? That's a mystery, even to us.

Response on the Pre's been amazing so far. There are already people who've played for upwards of 20 hours (maybe 30 at this point?), and it's only been out since Thursday.

That's really great to hear! Considering buying a Pre just for this game... I can already tell that this is going to be like crack for me

Very interesting, but unfortunately not surprising.

Anyhoo, have you guys been playing the awesome new Checkers Challenge!? What a great game, me and some of my bros were throwin' back some EXTREME Mountain Dews the other day talking about this game, and how the hottest girls on campus are all about Checkers Challenge. One guy was all like "I've never heard of Checkers Challenge," and this krazy hot girl was all like "why don't you have a seat over there..." We all laughed like crazy, and all ten of us logged into our iPhone/iPod Touch mobile gaming device and each purchased our own Checkers Challenge so we can game any time, day or night!

whoa! I totally like to hook up with hot girls too! I had better get myself some checkers challenge if I want to be able to do that.

Seriously, that shill stuff is no surprise and it is probably a lot worse than we will ever know. They have been doing stuff like that on the internet (Yahoo Movie Reviews, etc) for years.

Equally concerning is some drama I have heard about where small-time devs go after one another in dubious fashions - there's a case where some card-game dev has been using multiple accounts to buy copies of his competitors (equally small-time) software, then giving them bad reviews on the App Store. That's just crappy business practice - between all these things, what it boils down to is his - if you want to find success on the App Store, don't count on any kind of automated promotion to get you through. You just need a rock-solid product and a good deal of luck! (that, or a deep enough pocketbook to buy your way through)

That is an interesting article. It's hard to define the line between shill and honest opinion. Reading down to the bottom, the PR firm claim that the reviews are the personal opinions of the workers (and not part of the marketing). I'm not sure I buy that. I think for the sake of objectivity workers from the company should not be allowed to post reviews on iTunes without full disclosure of their associations - I mean, that's how it is with most things concerning advertising.

edit: now I'm embarrassed that this is the first post of the next page.
Wanna know how much I'm reading into this? Q also published Rez on XBLA and Every Extend on everything else :D

I'm getting lackadaisical with the App Store. I just have no motivation to download things like I used to.

Whereas I'd be excited for "Lumines" and probably go download Mr. Aaah right now, I don't really care and won't bother with the latter.

IMO, its because we're now coming out of the summer doldrums of gaming. The last few months the iPhone has had the most interesting releases. With the fall console lineup heating up, my interest in new iPhone games is definitely taking a back seat.

I reacheD that point a few weeks ago. Fun little casual puzzle toys don't excite me anymore (Drop 7, Lumines, etc), but there are still "hardcore" iPhone games that keep me attentive.

AARRRGGHH, I hate actually knowing there are updates to games (and apps) that I'm expecting, I keep checking like every ten minutes. Keeps me busy.

Gotta say, Im kinda taking a liking to mr aaaah. It's incredibly simple, but I'm having fun with the constantly changing wind/gravity conditions. To be honest, my favorite part of the game is when he grabs the rope before jumping.

Just watched it myself, and it does look great... But I'm still sceptical on how well this will actually handle. FPSs are rarely done well on a handheld. I want to believe, but I've been burned in the past.

The camouflaged analogue nub is a nice touch...

Can't believe geoDefense Swarm still isn't released.
An update to a camera control remote app was approved 20 days after submission. Three weeks seems to be the current mean.

Geo defense was sent for review prior to the 14th, and asked not to be released before then if approved earlier (Ha!). Based on that, I'd say this weekend is likely. Who really knows though.

NaturalMotion's Backbreaker football title headed to iPhone:

NaturalMotion's internally produced Backbreaker IP hasn't even been released yet - and already it has produced a spin-off game which it says rivals the quality of games on home consoles.

The firm, famed for its animation technology, has unveiled a collaboration with London-based Ideaworks 3D which has created iPhone title Backbreaker Football: Tackle Alley.

The game is due out later this year and is billed as one of the most high-end iPhone games boasting "a quality not seen before on the iPhone and iPod Touch".

The two studios say their technology is "providing the on‐screen characters with a fluidity of motion rivalling that experienced on home consoles".

Definitely interested to see how this turns out.

Review for Dragon Portals.

Dragon Portals
Breath of fire

Product: Dragon Portals | Developer: Myth People | Format: iPhone | Genre: Puzzle | Players: 1 | Version: US | App version: 1.00
by Tracy Erickson

Dragon Portals brings innovation to an ages-old genre. This beautiful puzzler breaks through the great wall of tired match-three play to tread new territory.

Transported to a mystical archipelago off mainland China, you're tasked with sending dragons back to their otherworldly home. Only by breaking dragon orbs of various colours can the portals be opened to send them back. It naturally follows that breaking these orbs is a function of matching three or more together.

Unlike in a traditional match-three puzzler, however, you're far more limited in how you move these orbs. Four dragons soar onto the screen with a line of orbs trailing behind. You can only drop orbs down to make matches - never up.

Since movement is so restricted, tapping an orb is enough to move it. There's no need to slide it into place, as the game automatically recognises your intended move.

You only have so much time to make matches before the dragons lose altitude and crash into the ground. A gauge lining the bottom of the screen must be filled before the altitude flag on the right reaches zero. Successful matches buoy the flag, but if you fail to fill the gauge in time it's Game Over.

While you're eased into the action, later levels are about as tough as catching a fly with a pair of chopsticks. Fortunately, special powers give you the upper hand. Unlocked through the course of the main Adventure mode, these powers range from bombastic fireworks that obliterate orbs to a passive sight that highlights possible moves.

A well balanced combo mechanic also helps you keep the dragons flying. Double matches that clear two sets of orbs on two different lines from a single move and chains reward you with extra altitude, tonnes of points, and fill up the progress gauge faster than standard matches. Setting up combos is a real challenge when you're forced to work quickly against fast-falling dragons.

The only area in which Dragon Portals lacks innovation is in its small selection of modes. Survival mode, which dares you to keep the dragons soaring with matches for as long as possible, is the only alternative to the story-driven Adventure mode. An additional puzzle mode requiring careful matches to eliminate each dragon's line of orbs without any coming in to replace them would be an interesting variation.

High scores for each mode are stored exclusively on your handset, with no option for uploading them to an online leaderboard. There's more than enough gameplay between the main Adventure and Survival modes, though comparing scores online would add further competitive flair to the game.

These are but minor complaints. Dragon Portals achieves innovation where dozens of games have failed, brilliantly taking the familiar match-three formula and breathing fire into it.

Has there been any new info about an update for Duke Nukem 3D? Is there in fact going to be one to fix the controls?

Great news about Lumines coming out though. Now if only Hexic would come out as well...
