The Official iPhone/iPod Touch Gaming Thread

Power Pill looks interesting, even though the Youtube video needs moar gameplay.

Can't help but laugh at goldsoundz's dpad hate, it's like when you hear people hate on virtual keyboards. Some suck, maybe they're not for everyone, but to declare it as shit or a failure is stupid. Modern Combat has some of the (if not the) best FPS controls on any handheld gaming device, compared to PSP or DS. Other dpad games, like Spy Bot or Drop Ship go pretty much unaffected by onscreen controls, it works naturally and easily.

But hey, not everyone loves everything. Not too shocking.

I meant the Doom RPG that has been out for ages. Didnt know it wasnt on the iPhone.

Ill check out Wolf RPG I think.

Wolf RPG on the iPhone is great. Really did a nice job on the port. I expect Doom RPG to be similarly fantastic.

How 'bout great platformers?

Now THAT would be awesome.
Rolando 2
Sway (personal favorite)
Castle of Magic
Spy Bot Chronicles

you might like some of those. I guess Canabalt is a platformer too. It's awesome.

Yeah wolfenstein rpg is pretty awesome. problem is im stuck in a part there with like 14 of the leather chicks. but overall its fun

Dungeon Hunter is really, really good. Excellent polished Diablo clone with three character classes, randomized loot, and great depth. Awesome value for the cost of the game.

Yeah Im totally gonna get this when Im done with Wolf RPG. Screenshots look great on the info page.

I just got one today - My first apple anything since an Apple IIe!

Random Questions:

- Is Crash racing worth it? (5 dollars I think) I played it in a circuit city awhile ago and liked it and I have very fond memories of crash team racing on the PSone. I'm sure there are better racing games out there but for someone with a fondness to crash would it be good simple kart racer to play around with?

- I dislike itunes so far - any alternatives? I've been dragging and dropping for years so its quite a change. All I listen to are podcasts which I download to my desktop then delete one I put it on my mp3 player. But with itunes it deleted it off my touch once I deleted it from my desktop wtf? Is there a way to only put stuff on in sync and not take stuff off? What does everyone use at work for hooking your ipod up to a pc? Usually if a podcast I like releases during the day I'll download to listen to at work and for the way home

- My favorite game of all time is FF Tactics - anything similar? I'm already downloading civ rev since I loved 2 and 3, but are there any good grid based, turn based, unit based games out there?

- Can I buy / get free samples for the kindle app from my PC or do I need to use the wifi on the touch?

Time to buy the giantbomb app!!!!

damn.. didnt realize Tyrian had "relative" controls you can switch to so it plays like Space Invaders IG. I think I'll actually get it now since it plays better than I realized.

I wanna get Dungeon Hunter, but I still havent heard an average of how long it takes to mostly finish the game.

You need to download the free Amazon Kindle app from the store. Then go to Amazon and setup your touch there as a Kindle device. You download from Amazon, and it syncs up with your touch whenever you sync it the next time.

It's going to be difficult to get that because the game doesn't track time played. Unless someone finishes it in one sitting, it's going to be tough to estimate.

Personally, I play it in short bursts throughout the day. Depending if I finish a level or not, I may be replaying the same level multiple times (if I have to stop playing before reaching the next level). Like Diablo though, the hunt for better gear is almost never-ending. Even if I only play for 30 seconds, I have a chance for a rare drop happening, so every second is exciting. There's also a bunch of side quests that appear to be optional. Doing those will extend the gameplay experience further.

Damn it. I thought I'd exhausted the crap out of playing baseball superstars 09 and was done with that game (over 10-15 hours on commutes leveling up my guys) and now I see the 2010 game out.

Well, another one on the iphone can't be bad!!! :D

I caved in and tried to buy canabalt (its not worth $3 when I can just play it on the computer) but it says I need OS 3.1. Why would this simple game need the new OS?

My iPod touch is currently on 2.2.1 firmware. If I upgrade to 3.1, will all my app data be erased?

And to contribute: buy bloons tower defense

no.

you’re not jailbroken, I assume.

(although I think your data would still be OK if you were)

Everyone should get Flipside. It's a great puzzler which could be described as a mix of Tetris and Bejeweld. I think it's a really well executed little gem. Which is a breath of fresh air in the AppStore puzzle section. It's only €2,39. Way better than Tetris and Lumines, imo.

iSR got updated today! yay! +1 for more awesome.

Thanks for the pimp. :D
Here's a link for anyone who hasn't checked it out yet.

We have something else, something different, coming soon. Can't wait to show it to you all.

picked up tyrian and it's damn good with relative controls on though not as good of controls as Space Invaders... so far I'm having alot of nostalgia flashbacks with this game since I gew up playing the shareware version endlessly... I kinda now want a port of Raptor now...

So Puzzle Quest is one of my favorite iPhone games. Are they ever planning on releasing more chapters beyond 1 and 2?

I've given up on waiting for more episodes of 1112 but Puzzle Quest is a little more high profile so I doubt the developers just abandoned it.

Many months ago there was word of the add-on being ported but I don't know if that became chapter 2 or not. I stopped playing puzzle quest when my ipod decided to format itself randomly and I lost about 12 hours of play.

What's in your iTunes library will be what's synced to your iPhone, so if you delete a file from iTunes and then sync, it'll go off your phone.

You can search for podcasts on your phone through the iTunes store app and stream them.

Edit: noticed you said you have a touch, so the streaming won't work unless you have wifi.

Whoa, Edge just got updated…

I think it might be back up in the US store (Canada here)

the name is now "EDGE by Mobigame”. I wonder if that does it with the trademark BS?

RelentlessRolento said:
Yeah Edge is back up. Smart name change IMHO

While the name change doesn't eliminate the infringement, the clarification of origin would help I imagine. Certainly something positive from Mobigame's perspective must be happening behind the scenes to prompt such a move.

They saw EA’s legal action against Tim “Edgefucker” Langdell and figured this move a) buys them some time and b) he might not be around to try to enforce the trademark in a year anyway.

Oh man, I would do anything for a port of Raptor 3, I played the HELL out of the demo back on my old ass Pentium (miss you!). Downloading the lite version of Tyrian right now to check it out. I´ve always wanted to download it, but was weary about the controls and had never heard of the Relative method until now, so my curiosity has peaked.

yeah, the controls are initially set to your fingers position, but start a game up, and pause it, then set controls to relative.

ngmoco is really pushing plus+ hard. In addition to Topple 2, Dr. Awesome is now also free and has plus+ integration.

If you didn't play it before, it's a very awesome Qix clone, with a dash of Trauma Center and Phoenix Wright mixed in. Worth grabbing, especially for $0.

Oh My God... yes.

I'm so going to find and play the old DOS version tonight - damn I love this game.

I downloaded Backbreaker expecting to make fun of how pathetic it was. WRONG. That game is awesome--perfect iPhone implementation.

I really don't like it when games don't let you play before giving an email/signing up for some service.
