They actually charge for an emulator? I thought most emulators existed only because they are in that grey area where they aren't making money and are done without offical SDKs.

I still need to jailbreak my iPhone one day, but it's too new right now so it would have to be a tethered jailbreak... something I don't want to deal with.

Cydia is what jailbroken iphones use. I think that it sits firmly in that grey area you were talking about.

I'm in the same boat as you, had enough trouble with reboots already. And even if it is in the grey area, I'm pretty sure they still can't charge for it legally, can they?

Haha an NES emulator was actually just released on the App Store today, and allows you to run any rom as long as you can link it to a URL. Expect it to be gone within a few hours. I just bought it at $6.99, but it runs pretty bad on a 3G unless you're playing a real basic game. I'll probably ask for a refund, since I won't be able to get my Mario 3 fix.

i just got a $15 itunes card and i'm wondering what to blow it on...i'm thinking of getting undercroft but i might wait until christmas to see if they pull some christmas sale shenanigans...

besides that nova game, what's something i really need to get now? i'm into elegantly designed stuff that can only be done on the iphone, if that helps...

Flight Control? Simple, yet endless fun. 99c too I believe. Play it whenever I get the chance on friend's iTouch/iPhones.

Anyone else got any free game reccomendations? Im in the mood for some app downloading.

The Deep pinball if you don't have it already. Wild West is also free, but isn't very good.

Word Ace! :D Okay, obnoxious to just pimp my own game, so I'll pair that with a legit recommendation: Card Ace!

No, seriously... uh... wow. That's depressing. I looked through all 75 of the other apps I've downloaded, and there's nothing else that was free that I'd actually recommend. MinMe is sort of an interesting concept, and will give you a few moments of entertainment, but it's incredibly short.

If you're willing to spend a buck or two, though, Dungeon Scroll = awesome, and Bejeweled 2's Blitz mode is addictive like nobody's business. Should be illegal.

There seems to be a NES-emulator up on the app-store now. with homebrew and the option to download more hombrew and other stuff.
Seems to be functioning pretty well as far as I heard. But quite "expensive".

Edit: Seems to have been taken down.
Was available for half an hour ago

This is another aspect that makes the App Store "review process" such a joke. Really, Apple? You "review" an app only to pull it the same day? How exactly does that work? I coudln't care less about this particular app, but the fact that there seems to be no consistency or S.O.P. is just insane.

speaking of roguelikes, did anyone get sword of fargoal? i read it wasn't very challenging, but was it really well done?

I am loving it. Yeah challenge is a lot less than normal rogues because you can wander around on "easy" levels leveling up until hell freezes over, but it has oodles of charm and I love the sounds ;)

The final Appvent Free game of the day is SpongeDude. Overall I think a lot of good games came out of the Appvent Calendar. I installed almost all of them, so I've still got to filter a few off my iPhone, but for only owning an iPhone for just over a month, I've got a lot of games.

I got Scrabble this morning since its on sale for $2.99, wow the Facebook integration is really good, I have been addicted so far.

I was thinking of getting Bejeweled because it's on sale but I really suck at it.

How is UNO?

I think I am going to get Ravensword and either UNO or Bejeweled.

Hmm ... I'm showing Bejeweled 2 at the usual price of $2.99. What price are you seeing? (US store, btw.)

Also, the roguelike mentioned above, Sword of Fargoal, appears to be on a "one day sale" for $1.99, for those that have been holding out.

Kind of pissed I missed out on the free Appvent games. Where are they located on the store? I couldn't find an easy link...
Appvent isn't an Apple thing so there's no special section. You just Search for them once the site announces the free game of the day. They only stay free for that day in most cases though.

You could always find a link to AppShopper or the App store for the Appvent games in this thread (from myself or someone else). There was also a main Appvent Calendar webpage that had links to the App store for each game of the day. They say there is still a surprise for tomorrow and Thursday, but no more free games as the App store is not allowing price changes after today until the 28th or something.

I plan on posting short reviews and which of the free games are worth buying sometime over the holidays.

Get Bejeweled 2! Bejeweled Blitz is very addicting. Even with all the free games, I spent $11 in the App store, usually because of GAF recommendations. 6 $1 games (The Creeps, MiniSquadron, Angry Birds, Doodle Jump, Pocket God, and Wolf RPG), geoDefense: Swarm for $2, plus Bejeweled 2 for $3. It is easily worth it... try Bltiz on Facebook first if you are unsure.

Is Scrabble online multiplayer for just random people? Or friends only? What about UNO (if you know)?

Scrabble has three modes. Quick Play (which vs. Computer, Pass n Play, or Solo Game), Wi-Fi Multiplayer (which then kicks to a "searching for opponent", so I assume that's local Wi-Fi only), and Facebook Connect that allows you to play with friends that are playing on the FB site or also have the iPhone app and a FB account.

For full disclosure, the Facebook Connect mode is giving me an error right now, "Your request did not reach the SCRABBLE server.", when I try starting it up. I have used it without problems in the past, but it's been a few months.

EDIT: I tried 4 more times, and finally got into the Facebook Connect mode. Odd, it had never given me a problem before.

I thought it was $4.99 normally for some reason.

Our game iFist is free for a few days!

This is the first title we released for iPhone, so it is pretty small and simple - we were just figuring the tech out and trying to gauge how much work it would be to create a larger project. It is still a fun little contest, though. Basically it's a sequence memorization game with a twist, and global scoreboards. Have a look - and happy holidays!

Here's how the gameplay works - the CPU will throw a sequence of moves (Rock, Paper, or Scissors). You must input back the opposing sequence to survive the round. If it throws "Rock Rock Scissors Paper Paper," you'd need to counter afterwards with "Paper Paper Rock Scissors Scissors."

Basically watch it's sequence, and then recall and execute the proper opposing sequence.

The longer you can last, the larger the sequence will become. There's 3 game modes to challenge you, it's just a very easy game to pick up and play and things will get pretty tense after about half a minute into it!

I got it just before it went down. I'm making a habit of purchasing apps that I know will be banned. :lol

Word to the wise: the Simpsons game is surprisingly awesome!

PS. What the hell is Angry Birds? The screenshots on iTunes don't tell me shit :(

It's a take on the "launch a projectile into a fortress and try to knock it down and kill the inhabitants" genre.

Sorta like this Flash game: http://armorgames.com/play/3614/crush-the-castle

And it's awesome. The point system is perfectly balanced such that 3-stars can require a bit of lateral thinking as well as luck. There is just enough LACK of precision such that you need to try the same tactic many times (normal frustrating, but works here), just maybe hoping the slight difference will give you a few more points. The ease of reset means it doesn't frustrate as much as it could.

It's one of my top twelve iPhone Games.

A long while back I mentioned I was working on an iPhone game that was something like a cross between Ouendan and Rez. Well, the game is called Entranced and the first version has been released! I missed posting about it earlier, and wanted to make sure to get the word out.

>> A NEW KIND OF MUSIC GAME <<

Entranced is a fresh, finely-tuned visual music game that will blow you away. Get lost in the eye-melting graphics, beautiful visual effects, and innovative gameplay. Entranced represents a leap beyond music games like Rock Band, Guitar Hero, Rez, and Tap Tap Revenge. We've brought the music game experience to a whole new level with a fun, engrossing game dynamic -- instead of tapping dots as they scroll straight down the screen, you activate 3D visuals as they flow and dance in mesmerizing patterns. Create beautiful scenes as you play to the beats of some of the world's hottest DJs and musicians!

>> ENGAGING, ADDICTIVE, AND VIBRANT <<

Entranced takes the experience of listening to music to an entirely new level, blending brilliant colors and intoxicating sounds into full synesthesia. Each track is perfectly matched with custom visuals, creating a dreamlike experience that takes you deep into the song. Touch the music in time and watch the notes transform into beautiful and imaginative blooms. With 5 musical worlds and many more to come, you'll enjoy hours of entertainment that will intensify your love for music.

>> A PHENOMENAL LIST OF TRACKS <<

Entranced showcases songs from some of the best DJs and musicians from around the world:

- Devadasi by Makyo
- Opal by Adham Shaikh
- Treasure by Sounds from the Ground
- Ashes by Karsh Kale
- Loaf by Sounds from the Ground

Check it out on iTunes, or visit the game site.
They even put together a trailer!

I really dig this music, and hope to work on similar projects in the future. :D

Plushed is making me want to throw my phone across the room.
This platforming is so annoyingly unforgiving. What the hell?

Yup, same here. It also doesn't look as good as I hoped. The art of the game was a great quality. Somewhere in the scaling it lost the sharpness.

I quit last night after I got to a point that I'd just keep missing a leap or not jumping at all...oh well. 2 bucks spent on a dev that helped bring us appvent.

I feel like you're misrepresenting the game even naming any of the games you did. It's more if an interactive kaleidoscope than a game like the two you mentioned or the various ones on your quoted description. Those games have a more interactive music experience where Entranced is passive. Do well or don't the song sounds the same.

And the main reason I feel that way is that many of the bubbles aren't in time with or in the same instruments as the others...so only trial and error teaches you when to hit what instead of intuition. But only about half feel in tune and on time. The rest are too early or too late and in instruments that rarely show or change which instrument the visual gem is associated with (which further confuses me when 2 seconds ago it was one sound, and then it turns into a different sound...while that first sound is still playing in the song).

And with fingers in the way and no audio cue that your doing good or bad it's difficult to know how your doing or if it matters. As well as not seeing everything due to the flourishes on the screen and finger placement.

Love the soundtrack, like the idea but it feels like an unfinished one. These are my first impressions after playing through the first three songs. I'll give it someore play and see how this impression holds up.

I agree. I have terrible timing anyway, but I loved Ouendan so damned much, maybe I just wished this were that, and am disappoint that it is not. I thought I would love the game, but not enjoy the aesthetic, but actually, I think the aesthetic is pretty neat, but I can't stand the 'game'.

The audio cues don't seem to be hitting anything for me, but more so, I need visual clues as to where to hit. The targets are constantly moving, so you kind of have to make a slight prediction as to when the ring will coincide with the object and at what place on the screen. I guess it will come as you play them over, but to me, that isn't fun. And the tracing ones - you have no idea where they are going - imagine like in Ouendan, the tracing part, but without a track to know where it's headed. Crazy.

So sorry, overall, I didn't like it.

HOLY FREAKING GOD.

and one more time for emphasis...
HOLY FREAKING GOD.

So, one or two days ago, the iPhone got an N64 emulator from Zodttd, available on Cydia for $2.50. Two days ago, it was pretty impressive to see Mario 64 run on my iPhone, but the framerate was bad, and the controls were worse.

FIXED. AWESOMELY.

First off, the update this morning fixes the crappy framerate (I'm getting around 20-25fps on Mario 64, which is ENTIRELY playable, more on that later), but the greatest part of all are the FUCKING WIIMOTE CONTROLS. Yes. Wii Remote controls on your iPhone.

Here's how it works: You have to enable "Wiimote Controls" then quit the app and boot it back up. When you do, it launches BTstack, then by pressing 1 & 2 on your iPhone and choosing your Wiimote, it's synced and ready to go. There are two methods of control; the first changes your accelerometer into the analog stick. The second makes your D-Pad an 8-directional analog stick, and your accelerometer becomes the C buttons. I much prefer the accelerometer being the analog stick. It's not at all awkward if you're used to games like Monkey Ball or Kororinpa on the Wii (or anything tilt-related on the iPhone, for that matter.)

The 1 and 2 buttons are A and B, while the "minus" button (of all things) is Z. This makes Mario 64 a little awkward when trying to do a super jump, and I hope it gets changed to the B button on the Wiimote. The D-pad ends up being the C buttons.

Anyway, the performance of this emulator is astounding. It runs completely playable, at least in Mario 64. I've already got 8 stars and I've only been playing for 15 minutes. Playing with sound enabled drops the framerate significantly, so I choose to disable it.

Regardless, this is a stellar emulator, and apparently $2.50 is a sale price, so get it as soon as you can through Cydia. If you're not jailbroken yet, you have no excuse. It's literally as easy as one click.

I'm going to test other things with this emulator, but for now, I'm just fucking stoked that one of my life goals has been accomplished: Have Mario 64 in my pocket at all times! (My hacked PSP doesn't count since that emulator blows and I never carry around my PSP.)

Edit: I just tested out hooking a Classic Controller and Nunchuck up to the Wiimote, and as expected, they don't do anything yet. Hopefully the developer will enable Nunchuk or Classic control, as that would make the controls literally perfect. Also, it should be noted that when using a Wiimote in accelerometer mode, most Wiimotes are naturally not calibrated perfectly, and this emulator goes by the true readings of the accelerometer. So most Wiimotes won't lay perfectly flat and give a reading of 0,0,0 on the x,y,z axis. This means that for your virtual analog stick to be at a position of 0, the Wiimote might have to rest a little bit tilted, as opposed to perfectly flat. I tested all 7 of the Wiimotes I own, and only one of them was perfect. That being said, I got the 8 stars with a Wiimote that wasn't perfect, and it didn't seem to matter much, unless I had to stand perfectly still.

bit overly excited there no? WE've already had this on the Nes emulator and the fact we don't have analog support makes this quite moot at this point.
