The 3G can only record videos if you jailbreak it and find/download unofficial software that uses some hacks to do it. The 3GS has videorecording built-in as an official feature, and its camera system is much better suited to it.

No, the 3G can record video with an app called iVideoCamera which can be found on the app store without having to jailbreak your phone. Sure it isn't great quality and its only a minute of video, but it works.

I want to buy Sim City, what are people's opinions of this game?

It looks great, but the reports of crashing scare me off. Has it been improved any by the 3GS/firmware updates?

It's a fine port, but I never ever play it. I quickly realized that I'm not fond of bigger games ported to the phone, and now stick to hit-and-run type stuff like Scrabble and Uniwar. It's a well made version though.

Ah, so someone released a hacky one to the official app store :) Dunno if I'd really call it a "video" at only 3 fps - all it's doing is taking pictures over and over again (using the normal camera function, that's why the framerate is so bad) and then assembling them into a sort of video. But you're right. I'd still say that the 3GS officially supports taking videos while the 3G does not, and it's one of the main reasons to get a 3GS over a 3G.

Thanks Foob! We've got two major comments so far - fixing the damn screen auto dim, and online leaderboards. The first one has been swiftly dealt with, and we're looking into OpenFeint support now. We've released three apps using it so far, so it might not be far away :P

Jos is offline but the patch for fixing the screen dim has been approved so should start appearing soon.

He also mentioned that the latest version of OpenFeint is smaller than previous ones, so we should be able to squeeze in leaderboards and achievements and still stay under the 10MB "limit" (that was the key issue). The team will therefore be adding OpenFeint support straight away, and we should easily have submitted the patch for it before the end of next week.

Are you using your headphones? Some of them are really tricky to where you know you have it down but in actuality you are missing like one note.

I got a 16GB iPhone 3GS for Christmas, and I'm wondering what I should get for it.

I thought about downloading Arkanoid on it, is it worth it?
Canabalt
Hook Champ
Space Invaders Infinity Gene
Peggle
Flight Control

all amazing titles that all iPod touch owners need

On arkanoid I assume it's just a straight port, look up some YouTube footage and see how it plays.

Arkanoid is okay. It's actually a good version, but I've played it so many times over the years on so many platforms it's hard to be all that enthused about it now.

OpenFeint has a new stand alone app now that I'll check out. supposedly has a built in free app of the day.

Got Beat It!. so far enjying it... mainly the design work though.

Awesome I've been waiting for them to release it. Thanks for the heads up. And unfortunetly the free app, atleast today's, is only the "free" version by which it just means lite version.

Holy cow. Version 1.1 of Card Ace was updated in an absolutely ludicrously awesome FOUR HOURS!

http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/card-ace-hold-em/id335244742?mt=8

Adds auto-actions, player ratings, and in-game gifts! Similar updates for Word Ace have also been submitted, and should be live soon! How soon? Who knows! Looks like Apple's pulling out all the stops re: approval speed! Nice!

I just saw this and just had to come post. Awesome! Thanks so much!

Redeemed some itunes cards from christmas and picked up:

Cannabalt: Obvs a must buy, been playing the free PC version forever
Bird Strike: Very fun, love supporting fellow gaffers
Words With Friends: Used the free version a ton, figured I'd support em. Great little game.
Beat it!: Amazing little 8-bit music game. Very classy.
Hook Champ: Haven't played it yet but I'm sure I'll dig it.

Yaaaay iphone ftw.

I bought Radiant the other day and I've been enjoying it quite a bit. It's pretty much a Space Invaders clone but with some cool power ups. Definitely recommended if any of you guys are into those type of games.

Because Of your recommendation, I bought this. Just finished it on casual. It's fun enough, but not much to it. I like it, but don't think I will try on normal or hardcore (casual was difficult enough with infinite continues, let alone without).

Unfortunately, Apple only gives developers Promo Codes for the US iTunes store, so hopefully this is you. If not, I'll leave it up to you to distribute as you see fit, but enzo_gt would be my next pick :P

Maybe I'll just buy it. I'm teetering whether I should start a third page of games for my iPhone.
im trying to distill my 200 games doen to just three pages. i hope yhe next OS allows backing up of data from the app so i can just keep what im in to at that moment on thr phone.

hate to delete something like zenonia or myst just because i havent played them for a couple months and lose my progress.

Me too. I have tried to keep my games to two pages. IT would be great to be able to save save data.

Do you lose your save the minute it's off the iPhone? Like if you manage your apps in iTunes and just uncheck the app.

:\

Does anyone know if there is any way to back up saves for if you do a full restore? I don't want to lose my progress in MiniSquadron :(

Also, because it was left unanswered in the OT topic thread, I'll quote myself here to see if it helps:

Can anyone tell my why my iTunes won't update any of my apps and I have to waste some of my valuable bandwidth or search out a Wifi location elsewhere instead? Apple fail, Error 1611.

Not totaly sure but I think making a backup of your iphone/touch does indeed grab any extra save data, but uninstalling the app by deleting it on the device or unticking it in itunes will delete saves and external data.

What I find weird is that a backup grabs everything but a delete does not, I guess the device see it as a full uninstall and takes saves along with it, something apple do need to fix now that their iphone has become a rather large global gaming device.

Basically, teh backups just save what's on the phone. IF you remove an app, the save goes with it, and thus from the backup.

Yes, unfortunately you lose the save if you remove the app from your device. Unchecking or deleting from the iDevice directly.

if you make a backup and dont overwrite that backup but restore later your progress at the moment of backup will be restored.

Kinda sucks with the ges that are long.

Though some opwn fwint games retain your progress once you log in. Still Id prefer Apple just allows me yo save individual app data.

Apple can't really fix it, because the iPhone doesn't know the difference between a file with game-save data, and any other file. A game or app can create or edit any files within its folder, there is no standard place, file format, or anything for save files. When you backup a device, it just backs up the entire game folder, thus gets the saves with it. When you delete a game, it deletes that game's directory, which includes whatever save files happened to have been stored there.

Im curious how arkanoid is too any gaffers like/hate it? Is it worth 4.99?

It's a good game, but I find the Chimps Ahoy! games more addictive. I may be a bit biased, though, as I was one of the programmers on those :)
