Released this morning in NZ so should be spreading over iTunes today, I been waiting for this game since they first announced it and fingers crossed it plays nice and like a simulation since it's a gran turismo clone.

Gee... could that be a Gameloft game? :lol :lol

Have you got a 3G, I can't remember? Let us know what the performance is like.

I was going to buy AC2 as it's on sale, but everyone said it runs like shit on the 3G. I really wish I had a 3GS, but it seems pointless upgrading now.

Space Miner is great, take one part asteroids, one part rpg, and one part crazy uncle jeb and you got a bucket full of awesome. Expect to be blasting asteroids, enemies, bosses and upgrading your ship as much as possible.

Only thing I don't like is the Banjo music, it's fitting but ...it's banjo music :S

Hmm, this sounds right up my alley. I'm still waiting on Warpgate(Argh!!!), but this will hopefully tide me over. Thanks.

Any one here tried Bouncedown? I found it yesterday on the app store, it's a free game in which you try to keep this little blob guy from touching the top or bottom of the screen... pretty fun. It is made by Jagex... who I think are the creators of Runescape and FunOrb (a flash game site). Comreto think of it I believe Bouncedown is a game on that site.

What do people think are the best "premium" games ($5+) on the app store?

I'm looking at GTA and CivRev and I'm not too into racing on the platform. Any other suggestions?

I am not sure on the exact prices of these but...

Civ Rev is awesome you should buy it, other good "premium" games include Star Defense, Knights Onrush, Peggle, Rolando 2, Space Invaders Infinity Gene, Worms, Rock Band, Command & Conquer, Tiger Woods, Dungeon Hunter, Jet Car Stunts, the new Assassin's Creed game and I also liked Super Monkey Ball 2, others don't though.

GT Racing is awesome, you can feel the difference in RWD and FWD cars, turning all aids off also feels real good when you know you can lose the rear end out of a turn if greedy.

Compared to Real Racing, RR still has the best frame rates with its butter smooth gameplay but GT Racing feels like gran turismo in your pocket.

Feel free to post about it in the official GT Racing gaf thread, yeah they never do go past 100 posts but eh I like making them for good iphone games :P

Anyone who hasn't picked up Space Miner yet better do so. It's amazing. Great graphics, sound, writing, controls. It's got the lot. It's asteroids meets elite in a way. But without the trading. Just the grind to find money and upgrade your ship in an adventure world.

I'd say it's one of the best games on the app store and really sells the iPod as a legitimate games machine. This is no td or console port wannabe. It's a new and original game, and it works superbly on the iPhone.

I'm already number 1 on the leaderboards, and just started my 3rd play through :D

That's sickening.

:p Such a great game so far for me. I love iPhone gaming, but this is the first original* title that actually begs to be a full handheld title. Nothing wrong with Tower Defenses and puzzle games, but Space Miner feels like a 'proper' game, and not just a diversion.

(disclaimer, original* = non-port, non-TD, non-puzzle, non-racing, non-boardgame, non-card game)

Fine. I'll buy it.

Just downloading FK Field Goal. May I suggest Flick Kick Gaelic Football? :D
Flick Kick Aussie Rules would be somewhat close to that, but given how well Flick Kick Rugby did in Ireland a Gaelic football version has been tabled :)

We'll be doing another original IP before we return to the Flick Kick series though, well, the Dev team has started on one at least.

Flick Kick Field Goal is so frustrating yet addictive, Made every goal in arcade mode but just barely missed the very last one :(, I wish there was a close up replay or something cuz I could have swore it went through.

This is the first game more than 115 yen that I'm picking up blind on someone's recommendation so it had better be blood good!

What about NOVA? I don't see a lot of interest on gaf for it but it was pretty hyped before release.

Should be in all iTunes regions tonight, I wanted this for my brothers DS too!

I still can not believe how absolutely ugly they managed to make it look. It looks even worse in stills than it did in the trailer.

Just to say; CivRev is exceptional - got it on the console too but you cannot beat the handheld version.

Dungeon Hunter is a very good Diablo-style game and works nicely on the touchscreen (easy to control/manage loot etc)

This is something that drives me crazy way more than the ugly openfeint icon. Is there a way to change or modify the application name that way it actually fits? It's purely OCD but it annoys the hell out of me.

You cannot remove openfaint icon, cannto edit the app name, cannot change the icon -_-
Maybe you can if you jailbreak, I don't know. I know for sure that one of the developers said that he would like to let user select which icon to display on the main screen (from within the app) but it's not possible to do.

I have high hopes. Normally, I stick out of saying a game is worth just buying, because everyone has different tastes, but Space Miner really has a broad appeal, I think. There's a lot there. It's not super long, but you'll definitely be engaged.

The levels are genius in that they are easy to just jump in and you always have in mind where you want to go next, and what upgrade you want next, so it's hard to put down.

Anyway, I'd like to know your impressions, so reports when you get the chance!

I played it a lot yesterday, and my only complaint is that I wish there were millions of weapons to give you lots of choice and strategies. The upgrade path is fairly obvious.

Just out of curiosity, are there any games out there that look like an NES game with similar limited color palettes? There's a good reason why I'm asking.

Hook Champ immediately comes to mind first.

I don't know if it's what you're looking for, though. ^_^

I think Pac-Man CE ($3+4 DLC) is the only "premium" one I'm still playing. The DLC isn't that big of a deal though, I only need it for the 360 championship level. If you don't need that the $3 base is fine.

Yeah I've had a bunch like that. Another thing that's bugged me is how some come up short. The how to play says "longer the swipe the further you will kick" but that's bullshit :p. I've had better results just doing a short swipe and just holding my finger on the screen vs full screen swipes.

A GAA gme would sell like hotcakes. As well as normal free kick type shots, you could have 45's and penalties. I would certainly buy it.
You could also making a Hurling game as it's very similar, infact nearly exactly the same except for the fact you are using a hurl and sliotár. Have I outed myself as a GAA fanatic?:D
Absolutely loving FK Field Goal. It's superb and very addictive. Keep up the good work.

Nectaris! I feel ashamed to call myself a retro gamer yet have not ever played this game. Now is my chance to repent for my sin..

Our game 180 is trudging along to the finish line, wrapping up the UI and then it's off to submission. I am intending to have a fancy-looking gameplay video ready to show sometime next week, but I will likely show a gameplay camera grab in the next day or so.

For the gameplay, think Tetris Attack meets Bust-a-Move - plus flipping!

Also, my girlfriend got addicted to Bird Strike and played it for like.. 6 hours last night! Superior product :)

Space Miner is fucking amazing. SO worth the $5.

I've pimped this a little bit, but judging by the lack of enthusiasm, I'm going to post a bit more about it, in case people are just brushing this off.

So what is it? It's part Asteroids (shooting), part Elite (upgrading), wrapped up in superb 3D graphics, great sound, and hilarious dialogue - pretty much top-notch presentation all 'round.

The premise is you have a spaceship, complete with the usual stats - speed, manoeuvrability, shields, defense, weapons slots and the like. You have a grid map that expands with more exploration. You enter a section and blast asteroids 'mining' for ore, which you get cash for to upgrade your ship.

It plays and controls extremely well. The inertia of your ship feels great, and you're able to very deftly swing your ship around a target to blast it. "But it's a virtual d-pad! - it's gotta suck!" Nope. It's actually more like a virtual paddle. It's a wheel. YOu actually feel like spinning it, and feels more natural than a D-pad. It runs smoothly (iPhone 3G) with very few hiccups (although there are occasional isolated incidents). There are also a few options such as flipping the side of the controller, or having the fire button toggle (very welcome).

The trading/upgrading part has a very progressive feel, reminiscent of Elite. Because what your are blasting turns into ore (picked up by a magnetic beam that is also upgradeable), which is directly related to money, what you are shooting is translated into upgrades. It's not like a simple "Meteor Blitz" like shooter, because the upgrades are involved with all aspects of your ship, including radar, speed, shields, size of cargo hold (which lessens the number of times you have to re-enter a sector to clear it out). The upgrades are all balanced by how much battery each upgrade uses, and the size of output your reactor can give. It works really well.

Thing is, it's not just shooting and upgrading. It's laid out like an adventure, with a few NPCs with well written, genuinely funny dialogue. Laid out within the adventure are a handful of sidequest-like missions, as well as finding random gadgets and upgrades that you can't buy. Enemies also litter each sector, and there are a few boss encounters.

The game on normal is not that challenging, but it has taken me 7 hours so far, and I'm just going through to 100% all the sectors before attempting the final level. I think it has rubbed off on me such that I will probably work my way through on hard.

While it's kind of short, it's super engaging and addictive. YOu'll set your sights on a particular upgrade, farming until you have the cash to buy it. Soon you have it, so you need to test it out. And then you have your eye on another. Or just to clear that sector over there. It's very compelling and hard to put down.

I say it's an example of one of those games that fully legitimises the iPhone as a gaming platform. It's not as long as some DS or PSP games, but it's $5 and feels very much like a full game from top to bottom. Think of it this way - you probably know what to expect somewhat from a title like this. Just take out the usual padding in this kind of game, and you get this distilled awesomeness.

I'm generally very wary of games. I play a lot and may praise the odd game very highly, but I normally restrain it to "if you like it". For example, I'm a huge fan of Angry Birds, but I do know some people don't like having to trial and error levels to get them right, so I admit it's not for everyone. Space Miners, however, I think has a very broad appeal, and is simple and easy to get into - it's very obvious how things work from the very beginning. This comes with my highest recommendation.

IMPRESSIONS
I think it probably deserves its own thread with those impressions in the OP. The game is soooooooo good.

I have to agree. This game would have it's own thread if it was released on any other platform.

Space Miner = Star Control 2.5?

Edit: While we're at it, there should be SOMEONE out there who is game enough to port SC2/Ur-Quan Masters to the iPhone for release.
