The Official iPhone/iPod Touch Gaming Thread

The Noby Noby Boy iPhone app is amazing. It shows you the time to make sure you are productive. You can also listen to music, surf the web, and make BOY stretch. It has augmented reality capabilities as well as a ton of other features. It is definitely worth buying at $2. There are multiple games found in here. I believe people call this a "killer app."

Disclaimer: I do not work for Namco, but I may be a biased fan of Takahashi. The truth is that this app should be on your phone and/or touch.

No no, this is not okay. Do you want them to make these garbage pseudo-games?

Next thing you know they're gonna release a Klonoa 'game'-- one which is simply a music player that inserts "wahoo" or "dupu-rudu" into your songs every few seconds.

The WTF is the release being a non-game rather than a game. Not from it being a WTF game.
Well, you have to realize, the PS3 version is the same way - there is no real "game" behind it, all you are really doing is stretching your BOY around, trying to get him as long as possible. It's more like an interactive toy than a game. Sounds like the iPhone version actually has *more* stuff to do, since it can use the camera and GPS in its stretching.

!-!-!-!-!-!-!- ATTENTION iPHONE-GAF -!-!-!-!-!-!-!

Costanza and I have started a Google Document that will list all of GAF's recommended iPhone games, so when someone says "Hey, I just got an iPhone and I was *blah blah*," we'll be able to point them there. Currently, the document is in it's early stages and is only editable via invite. But this is only so the general public won't be able to edit our choices fuck up the document.

We want you to add the games you love to the list!

The list can be found HERE, and you can copy and paste the link (http://goo.gl/OCsi) for anyone else to view. Please reply in this thread (or PM me) with your email address so that you're able to edit the list as well.

Ideally, this will become a wiki-style list that we're able to reference whenever anyone needs a good suggestion for an iPhone title.

tl;dr: http://goo.gl/OCsi

It's a nice idea, but I don't see any reason to include less than stellar games, since there are just too damn many on the iphone, and get rid of the fractions. Heck, get rid of the scores all together, sticking with something like 'great' and 'must have' or 'fun' and 'OMFG.'

I agree, no more fractions. But the idea of a score isn't really to say how good it is, but more "how much of a must-have it is."

The whole idea of the list to have a comprehensive collection of games that are all worth owning, which so far, they all are. But since some people might not be into Civilization as much as others, it's rating is only a 3. Whereas, everyone on earth enjoys Peggle, so that's a bit higher.

Also, the only reason we have numerical scores as opposed to "OMFG YES" is because we can apply a highlight filter for a nice visual representation of how "must-have" the game is.

Edit: Nice 6,000th post, btw. =)

I don't think you should go all Game Informer on this list. Don't make assumptions on what people like and dislike, but say what sort of game it is, and say how good it is for that sort of game. I'm not a huge fan of Peggle myself. I like Civ a whole lot more, though the iphone version does have some minor issues so I wouldn't argue with the score.

I just think this list should be as easy and accessible as possible. Putting poor games and slapping on scores are two roadblocks to that.

Edit: Thought of two other metrics to use, 'demo it' and 'buy it.' If you insist on covering meh games, then add 'ignore it.'

Love it. I'll edit that in.

Edit: Actually, what if there is no demo for the game? I agree that this numbered system is flawed, because already most people are just putting 4's and 5's down.

Fuck it. I'll just make it the iTunes current score.

Now with iTunes scores, as opposed to arbitrary GAF user scores. =P

I'm dragging this out too much, but I think most of those tunes scores are bullshit. Sometimes they're complaining about a problem and give harsh scores to something that's completely fixed in the current version. I bought the Kings after reading pages of complaints that were fixed over a month ago. Also, if there's an iffy game that you feel needs a demo to justify a purchase and doesn't have one, the developer doesn't deserve the sale. This might sound harsh, but either make a demo or make a better game. There are plenty of games I'd say straight up buy that have demos.

The iTunes scores aren't the best, agreed, but at least it's something to go by that's not just one person's personal opinion. By now, most of us have learned to take those scores with a grain of salt, anyway.

Then they're worthless. People can look up those scores and reviews easily when they consider buying the game anyway. If you don't want to include someone's personal opinion, which I thought was the whole point of this list, then have no score at all. Because if I recommend something that I know is really good but got three stars due to a glut of six month old reviews for problems that don't even exist anymore, no one is going to look at it.

My most recent purchases are Space Miner and GTA. I'm almost to the 7 hour mark on Space Miner and I feel like I'm close to done, but not until i 100% the entire board. Everything is really well done. It took me probably 3 or 4 hours till I realized that the levels/backgrounds had such good variety. I'm also super pumped about my levelled up ship.

However, Ive only played about an hour of GTA. I consider myself a pretty hardcore iPhone gamer, so I was waiting for the iPhone version. Am I missing anything if I just want to skip through all the cutscene crap? When I pick it up, I have no patience to sit and watch them at all. I did finally get through the first few missions the last time I played it and I dug it though.
I dunno. I couldn't pass up the 3 dollar off sale and I knew I was getting toward the end of Space Miner and I wanted something meaty.

...so how about a wiki?

Anyway I agree with Aaron, just dump the scores. Maybe limit people to just one game to limit crap as much as possible, and if you want some form of ranking you can tally up votes or something. With Google Spreadsheets you can make a form so that might be a good way to add games/votes...if they can work like that.

This. If the point of the list is to have the best of the best iPhone games then a score should be irrelevant, everything on it is essential.

To skip GTACW's cutscenes, press and hold somewhere on the screen while the cutscene is playing.

Yea, that's exactly what it is :lol There's Takahashi for you. Note that game game is in the "Productivity" section rather than "Games"

I'd certainly be interested in impressions from anyone who's picked it up, especially on how integral the camera and GPS are since I have a touch.
Productivity at work, reading the news:

From what I can tell the GPS can be used to stretch BOY out and there's a location based marker thing, like it shows a pixelated map with different colors from people that have contributed I think. Camera can insert stuff into the playfield or just be a live feed background, you can also pull stuff from your photo library otherwise.

I know it's already been said in the Space Miner thread but some of you might not read it.

Space Miner is on sale for $1.99 for a limited time.

And if any of you have small children I can recommend the app Monkey Preschool Box which my daughters (almost 5 and 3 years old) are enjoying a lot.

I saw that Chinatown Wars had a ridiculous sale price, but I can't even find it on the store anymore.

Apple have just increased the download cap over 3G to 20MB! (from 10mb)

This is great news for me because Tumbledrop is about 13mb! Lots of people couldn't get the game before because it was over the 10mb limit, and they didn't have their iPhone on any wifi.

Where are the missing levels? The medal list shows 80 missing medals (40 levels) and the difficulty select shows 60 rainbows missing (120 medals?).

I'm open to these suggestions. In fact, it's not my call at all. I just know that at least once a week, someone new pops in and says "Hey, what should I buy?" I just thought it'd be nice to have a steady list going of games we love.

Anyway, how about this, can I add both of you to the list and you guys can shape it in a way that you like? This isn't my list, I just wanted to get the ball rolling. We could also do an actual Wiki if you think that'd be better.

The entire point of having a rating system in the first place is to highlight the games that are universally praised. I'm sure, with the list, we'll get a lot of recommendations for games, and it'd be nice to be able to highlight the ones that everyone agrees would be a must have.

So, perhaps I'll try and implement a suggestion list that tallies the number of people who suggested the game. I don't know of an efficient way of doing that without using the honor system, though.

Edit: Alright, let's try something new. First, I'm going to open it up for everyone to edit. Secondly, I'm going to add change "Submitted By" to "Recommended By," and if more than one person recommend the game, they can sign their GAF username there.

Please check it out and post your thoughts! Also, add your name under the Recommendations if you, well, recommend the game!

Oh.. those are bugs, or mistakes, I'm afraid. There are are 120 medals in the game right now. 60 heart medals, and 60 star medals. 60 rainbows refers to the ordinary completion of a level.

I'm working on new levels right now, but I'm ironing out a few bugs which are preventing me from progressing with certain level types.

good job on the spreadsheet!

I added a few. :D

EDIT: I dont have access to iTunes, so I cant get to the App Store to fill in the price & publisher. If someone can fill it in, that's cool, or I can wait until later to do that.

Should All-in-one Gamebox really be there? If it should, I'd rather know why, instead of "there's a ton of shit but it's only a dollar."

There's a lot of crap games in the store for a dollar, just getting loads together isn't really a selling point.

It just doesn't really sound like it's the cream of the crop of iPhone games. Stuff needs to be judged for its qualities, not its price.

I know what the rainbows mean, I'm just looking at the three instances of 20/40 on each difficulty button. And the two rows of "?" in the medals section.

More balloon levels.

This spreadsheet is awesome. We should make one of these for each console, too. =P

Fantastic idea. I put my own game on there let me know if that's against the rules :lol Everyone who's played it seems to like it. Now to look up the info on some of the adventure games I've been going through.

That's cool, as long as it's a good game. =D

We're getting a pretty steady flow of updates. Remember, this is the quick link to the sheet:

Typical, space miner reduces in price by over 50% mere hours after I buy it. This is why digital distribution is a very dangerous thing for consumers!

Well, you're not alone at least. I had the same happen to me with it.

Rule of the app store, unless it's from gameloft it will go on sale within a month. If it is from gameloft then lately expect £3.99, then £2.99 after a few months, then random sale on older titles.

Also if you use an iPhone the 3G download cap is raised from 10mb to 20mb on the app store, so many more games are now available on the move.

Hey man, it's not as bad as paying full price at retail and walking next door to see it 20 bucks cheaper 30 seconds later!

Oh no, you supported an awesome dev with $3. WTF is wrong with you people?

You have rights as a consumer with physical products, you can get a refund, trade stuff in, sell them on eBay, give them as presents and so on. not to mention customer service, fit for use warranty, quality checking etc. but you said it yourself, the key thing is choice, you can shop around for rival products in rival stores.

Tobor said:

I supported an awesome developer with £3?? No... I blind purchased a game on a whim from a developer I have no feelings for or attachment to and have yet to even decide if the game is as good as everyone says. That doesn't change anything with the point I raised and doesn't give you any right to give me the holy gamer lecture. there are plenty of people, game dev or otherwise who could use my money, but fact is I bought the game as a product, for me as a consumer and I hoped it'd prove worth the investment, having it drop to a 3rd of the price hours later is fucking annoying. Or am I supposed to be happy that I was able to give extra support to these developers I've never heard of before?

I'm not even that angry at losing £2 on a game ffs, I was raising a point about digital distribution being controlled by companies and how dangerous it was for consumers.

With digital, one channel is king, there are very low overheads on their part and you have very few rights as consumers. There is no shopping around or refunds or changing your mind and I find that a very dangerous future to be hurtling towards. It's £3 today, £10 tomorrow and £30 next month. Principles the same.

Short version, yes I'm annoyed and don't fucking tell me I can't be annoyed ffs. Hells wrong with you!?!
