You have rights as a consumer with physical products, you can get a refund, trade stuff in, sell them on eBay, give them as presents and so on. not to mention customer service, fit for use warranty, quality checking etc. but you said it yourself, the key thing is choice, you can shop around for rival products in rival stores.

I supported an awesome developer with £3?? No... I blind purchased a game on a whim from a developer I have no feelings for or attachment to and have yet to even decide if the game is as good as everyone says. That doesn't change anything with the point I raised and doesn't give you any right to give me the holy gamer lecture. there are plenty of people, game dev or otherwise who could use my money, but fact is I bought the game as a product, for me as a consumer and I hoped it'd prove worth the investment, having it drop to a 3rd of the price hours later is fucking annoying. Or am I supposed to be happy that I was able to give extra support to these developers I've never heard of before?

I'm not even that angry at losing £2 on a game ffs, I was raising a point about digital distribution being controlled by companies and how dangerous it was for consumers.

With digital, one channel is king, there are very low overheads on their part and you have very few rights as consumers. There is no shopping around or refunds or changing your mind and I find that a very dangerous future to be hurtling towards. It's £3 today, £10 tomorrow and £30 next month. Principles the same.

Short version, yes I'm annoyed and don't fucking tell me I can't be annoyed ffs. Hells wrong with you!?!

I'm just sick of the constant whining about what amounts to small change. Games that start out sub-$10 have to drop 50% of their value, the amounts are so small that anything less is meaningless. What are they going to do, a $.50 sale? It wouldn't even register.

As to your point about DD as a whole, it's simply irrelevant when we're talking about amounts this small. If a $40 game drops to $15, maybe you have a point. Actually, even then, probably not.

Apple have just increased the download cap over 3G to 20MB! (from 10mb)

This is great news for me because Tumbledrop is about 13mb! Lots of people couldn't get the game before because it was over the 10mb limit, and they didn't have their iPhone on any wifi.
I bought the game yesterday. Its very fun.

am i crazy for not wanting to buy Space Miner because of the virtual d-pad? i saw that and just closed the page. those things piss me off to no end, i wish games would try to work with the strengths of the touchscreen instead of using one.

It's not a d-pad. It's more like a wheel, and works perfectly.

was that directed at virtual-controls-hating me?

It does use the strengths - the directional wheel acts like a paddle, and is much better than a d-pad implementation (although a d-pad implementation is available, where it acts like an analog stick, and it's not as good).

I used to hate virtual controls as well, but having the iPhone as my primary gaming device has helped me to play well - you DO get better at using them. Of course, it's not ideal, but it can be handled well.

I wish I hadn't bought it because it doesn't let you play your own music. Nearly all my other games support this, why did the devs leave this on the table? I doubt I'll touch it again since I like listening to podcasts as I play.

Just buy it. It's $2.99 (or whatever) ffs.
$1.99 ffs, actually. Heh. And i just bought it.

I was taking a stab in the dark as to what the price was, but either way it's a hamburger or soda or whatever.

IMO, if you're worried about the cost of an app, put it in relative terms. You can get food or drink that lasts a very short time, or an awesome game that will in the very least last hours.

This. Once I beat Super Monkey Ball 1 on the iPhone, I was able to play ANYTHING that required the accelerometer. Similarly, once I beat Mega Man 2 using the virtual buttons... Yeah.

Back 3? Good god man. All you need is the last column filled with SunFlowers/SunShrooms and even that's over-kill most of the time (only up to chapter 3-5 though).

Regarding Space Miner's new low price / sale price? I feel the pain of Kaizoku. I bought Space Miner over the last weekend, and haven't even launched it yet. But whatever. If it's as good as you guys say it is, it doesn't really matter in the end; but it still stings a bit to know had I waited I could have saved that money and bought other apps with it.

I say this over and over again but I'm not buying apps anymore until they go on sale :p. With the exception of stuff like PvZ that I've wanted for months.

Still, if it's great, you can't go wrong at 2. Unless you want to wait for a buck :p. I honestly didn't expect it to go on sale so soon, especially not for this much. Like maybe a buck off. Hopefully this means they're working on Space Miner 2 that I read the dev wanted to do.

Where are all your sunflowers? I always have the back three columns completely filled with sunflowers.

Really? All 3? For me 2 seems to fit the job, at that time I'm only really held back by the refresh rate of the zombies. Later levels perhaps an extra line though.

Yeah; 2 was enough the complete the game on the PC and I suspect the same on the iphone - I just haven't played the iphone one much yet

Not a game, but I just got air video for iphone. Lets you stream video from your home computer to the iphone either on a lan or through the internet. I just streamed a 10gig MKV file from my home server to my iphone while i'm at work, it takes about 15 seconds to start the video but after that it's smooth and super awesome quality. I can't believe how good this thing works. It live-converts any video file and streams it to your iphone/pod, super sweet.

3?! Seems like overkill. The amount I have in that pic seems like the perfect amount for me. I'm obviously adding the little floating mines as well now as well.

I think my idea of having the ice pea shooters on the back row is ideal. Maximum slowing capacity and since they can kill the attacker, they provide slightly more defence than a sunflower in a worst case scenario.

Yeah I saw this on Lifehacker and was looking for reviews. Guess I'll give it a try too :)

Thanks, installed it - works great.

Man, Space Miner is GOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOD......

I am about 2 hours in. I got to my second ship upgrade, and 3 weapons. The celestial backdrops are really pretty.

I think I am going to purchase Canabalt and Unify today, what else does GAF think I'm missing?:

I still hate virtual d-pads, but this is true. Space Miner is a good implementation. Probably the only good implementation that I've tried.

I second that. I haven't found another game that does it as well/responsively. I risked Space Miner as everyone here was raving, and haven't looked back.

Anyone else having problems with the iphone version of Noby Noby Boy? 9/10 times the game crashes on the menu, i've tried rebooting the phone and deleting and re-downloading the app, but to no avail as it still crashes - only got to play it once :( I'm on a iphone 3g btw.

Sometimes, restoring resolves startup issues.

Yeah Air Video is pretty great, I've been using it for a few months now. Kinda tempted to get some other streaming thing for TV at some point, whether it be Sling or some other setup.

Only problem I've had is it taking a long time when bringing up the music player (which happens in other apps too). It's been solid for me, although performance can chug quite a bit when using the music player.

Mini Squadron taught me to love the wheel and "virtual" controls.

This is also true. Mini Squadron works the same way as Space Miner, and is also perfect.

I hope other developers are paying attention, design your games using a paddle, not a dpad.

Sigh. I'm trying a lot of them, but no matter what, I really dislike "classic" games on iPhone. I mean games with virtual buttons and d-pad/stick.

I'll stick to quick/minute games that use the touch screen efficiently.

At this point, I'd rather pay more and get them on DS/PSP.

Kingdom of Gnester is a good game though.
